Overall Rating
The 2020 Kia Sorento has been launched for a base MSRP of $26,990 and comes with minor changes to the exterior styling and features list. The 2020 Sorento retains the same 2.4L inline-4 motor producing 185 hp and a bigger 3.3L naturally aspirated V6 motor producing 290 hp. Both of them come mated to a 6-speed and 8-speed automatic transmission and comes in FWD and AWD layout. The 0-60 MPH and the quarter-mile time of 9.6 seconds and 17 seconds also remain identical to the outgoing 2019 Sorento.
Favorite of the masses, the Kia Sorento has an identity of its own in the crowded SUV market. The same ethos of this mid-size SUV is carried forward to the 2020 Kia Sorento as well. The car comes with five different trim levels, which start from a base MSRP of $26,990. The 2020 Sorento still retains the same 2.4L naturally aspirated inline-4 motor producing 185 hp and 178 lb-ft of torque mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission.
The S, EX, and SX trims get a 3.3L V6 motor producing a respectable 290 hp. Its comfortable ride, premium interiors, and unmatched versatility still manage to make the 2020 Kia Sorento one of the best choices for the family mid-size SUV buyers. Competing with the likes of 2020 Hyundai Santa Fe, 2020 Chevrolet Blazer, and the 2020 Nissan Rogue, we will find out how the 2020 Kia Sorento stacks up against the rivals in this in-depth review.
The 2020 Kia Sorento SX turned out to be the most value for money trim of the lot mainly due to the excellent V6 motor under the hood coupled with all the safety features like surround-view camera, front parking sensors, and many more coming in as standard. Interior features such as a 14-way powered driver's seat with memory support, an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system with navigation, and a 10-speaker Harmon Kardon audio system are also offered as standard.

"The ritzy SX Limited and its lofty price are gone, but the one-step-down SXtrim of the Sorento provides most of the important content."-Caranddriver.com
The 2020 Kia Sorento comes in five different trims, namely L, LX, S, EX, and SX trims. The lower trims like L and LX come with the 2.4L naturally aspirated inline-4 motor producing 185 hp and 178 lb-ft of torque. Apart from that, all the other trims get a bigger 3.3L naturally aspirated V6 motor punching out 290 hp. Both the motors are mated to the same 6-speed and 8-speed automatic transmissions. Apart from that, the 2020 Kia Sorento also gets 19-inch alloy wheels, mildly redesigned front and rear, and navigation support on the top-of-the-line SX trim.
The 2020 Sorento also comes with a big optional extras and packages list which includes a washer heater, puddle lights, side step bars, crossbars, and paint protection packages. Safety and driver-assistance features like emergency braking assist, blind-spot detection, lane departure warning, post and pre-collision safety system, etc are also offered as standard with the highest SX trim.

The 2020 Kia Sorento SX turned out to be the most value for money trim of the lot mainly due to the excellent V6 motor under the hood coupled with all the safety features like surround-view camera, front parking sensors, and many more coming in as standard. "The Sorento's V-6 acquits itself well against competitors in both the two- and three-row classes."-Caranddriver.com
Like its outgoing model, the 2020 Kia Sorento still retains its two-powerplants. The lower two trims come with the 2.4-liter inline-4 motor that pumps out 185 hp and 178 lb-ft of torque and the power is transferred to both front wheels and all wheels, with an optional AWD system. However, if you want more thrilling performance, you can go directly for the 3.3-liter naturally aspirated V6 engine found in the S trim and above, and that makes 290 hp and 255 lb-ft of torque.
The base 2.4L inline-4 motor of the 2020 Kia Sorento comes mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission with selectable drive modes on offer. However, the 3.3L naturally aspirated V6 motor comes with an 8-speed Sportmatic torque converter automatic transmission. Both the AWD and FWD drivetrain layout are also offered with both motors.
Trying some rapid sprints with the inline-4 powered Sorento is not a very noble idea, however, the V6 model does promise stronger propelling power. With the 2.4L Inline-4, the 2020 Sorento takes 9.6 seconds to complete the 0-60 MPH run and 17 seconds for reaching the quarter-mile. However, 2020 Sorento's with the 3.3L V6 does the same in 7.6 seconds. The 2020 Hyundai Santa Fe and 2020 Chevy Blazer are quicker than the 2020 Sorento in the 0-60 MPH test, coming in at 8.9 seconds and 7.9 seconds, respectively. The 2020 Nissan Rogue gave out the worst 0-60 MPH time of 10.1 seconds.

Though we were impressed with the excellent performance on offer from the V6 motor of the 2020 Sorento, we were not very happy with the vague and imprecise steering on offer. Barring that, the 2020 Kia Sorento was able to take the corners without posing too many problems to the driver. However, it is still not as dynamically excellent as the 2020 Mazda CX-9, which is the benchmark for the segment. Nevertheless, the ride quality and braking performance of the 2020 Sorento were top-notch.
An aspect where the 2020 Kia Sorento surprises the most is its acceptable fuel economy, despite its diverse character. Offering an MPG figure of 22 MPG in the city, 29 MPG on the highway, the 2020 Sorento came out with a respectable 25 MPG of combined gas mileage.

The 2020 Kia Sorento equipped with the bigger 3.3L V6 motor managed to give out 19 MPG in the city and 26 MPG on the highway, with a combined rating of 22 MPG. Both the moniker also comes with an 18.8-gallon fuel tank capacity, which helps the Sorento with the inline-4 motor to give out an excellent 414 miles of range in the city and 545 miles of range on the highways.
Even though the 25 MPG of combined gas mileage offered by the 2020 Kia Sorento is similar to that of the 2020 Hyundai Santa Fe, the 2020 Nissan Rogue takes the crown for being the most fuel-efficient offering of the segment, giving out the best in class combined gas mileage of 29 MPG. The 2020 Chevrolet Blazer turned out to be the gas guzzler of the lot with combined gas mileage of 23 MPG.
"The cabin is thoughtfully designed for the most part, faltering mainly in third-row access — inevitable perhaps given the Sorento's tweener class size."-Edmunds.com
On the inside, the 2020 Sorento keeps things pretty clean and simple. The 2020 Kia Sorento comes in three different interior color schemes, namely light gray, full-black, and mahogany leather. The 2020 Sorento also gets a whole host of interior features like a reclining rear seat, panoramic sunroof, a 7-inch or 8-inch infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, dual-zone automatic climate control system, and heated and cooled front seats.
Since the 2020 Kia Sorento has tried to carve out maximum utility from a smaller wheelbase, it does struggle with its rearmost passenger room. Even in the first two rows, the 2020 Hyundai Santa Fe offers more space. However, in comparison to the 2020 Blazer and the 2020 Rogue, the 2020 Sorento turned out to be slightly more spacious. The cargo capacity of 11.3 cubic feet is also the lowest of the lot in comparison to 39.3 cubic feet offered by the 2020 Rogue.

Infotainment needs in the 2020 Kia Sorento are taken care of by a 7.0-inch touch screen in all trims except the top-of-the-line SX, which gets an 8.0-inch unit. This infotainment system comes standard with Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and USB connectivity. For audiophiles, there is an available 10-speaker Harman Kardon audio system that offers a brilliant audio experience. The 7.0-inch infotainment screen feels a bit dated now and is also not as large as its modern rivals. However, the system responds actively to driver inputs and has clear graphics along with a clutter-free menu, making it pretty intuitive to use.
Some of the key interior and infotainment features on offer from the 2020 Kia Sorento are mentioned below:
"There are modest styling updates front and rear, and the Sorento has a more consolidated trim levels."-Caranddriver.com
Take a look at the 2020 Kia Sorento and you are very likely to think of it as a two-row mid-size crossover. The 2020 Sorento gets an updated front and rear fascia in comparison to the outgoing 2019 model and also retains the striking LED fully automatic projector headlights with LED DRLs. Along with that, the 2020 Sorento also gets massive 19-inch alloy wheels wrapped in P235/55 R19 all-season tires, making it grip and look impeccable. The side mirrors are electrically adjustable and offer heated functionality too.
The 2020 Kia Sorento also gets subtle exterior details like a lip spoiler, a blacked-out grille with chrome surround, and an integrated roof spoiler. The 2020 Kia Sorento comes with nine exterior color schemes and many optional extras like a dual-pane panoramic sunroof, smart key system, puddle lights, and sidestep bars. Along with that, a paint protection package is on offer too.

The 2020 Kia Sorento looks well proportioned with its decently large length of 189" and width of 74.4". The height of 66.3" is also in line with the rest of the competitors from the segment. However, in comparison, the 2020 Chevrolet Blazer turned out to be the largest of the lot with the best in class width, height, and length. Along with that, the curb weight of 3,782 lbs of the 2020 Blazer is also lower than the 2020 Sorento, which comes at 3,810 lbs.
Some of the exterior features on offer with the 2020 Kia Sorento has been mentioned below:
The 2020 Kia Sorento received a 'Good’ rating in all the subsections of the IIHS crash test. It was also selected as the top safety pick by the organization. When it comes to the NHTSA crash test, the 2020 Sorento received an overall crash safety rating of 5-stars, with a 4-star rating in the front crash test, a 5-star rating in the side crash test, and a 4-star rating in the rollover crash test.
The 2020 Kia Sorento also comes with many advanced safety and driver assistance features to make the ride even safer. Some of the features like lane-keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control, and the automated emergency braking are on offer. Apart from that, all the regular safety features like ABS, airbags, traction control, electronic stability control, etc are present on board as well.
The 2020 Santa Fe and 2020 Sorento are basically twins and they share a lot of components. Just like the 2020 Sorento, the Santa Fe offers high-quality interiors, a comfortable ride, and a long list of tech and safety features. Surprisingly though, the 2020 Santa Fe offers a better passenger room than the Sorento despite its shorter length. However, it lacks the composure and handling of Kia. It doesn't offer the third row as well. Nevertheless, the 2020 Sante Fe turned out to be slightly faster in the 0-60 MPH and the quarter-mile time.
The 2020 Chevrolet Blazer looks very modern and stylish, offers an impressive cabin with nice materials, and is quite spacious as well. The 2020 Blazer also gets a more responsive steering and a refined powertrain, making it a fun-to-drive car. However, the 2020 Sorento races ahead of the stylish Chevy with its practicality, composed ride quality, and features on offer as standard.
The 2020 Nissan Rogue offers a comfortable drive, is roomy on the inside, has a well-proportioned design, and offers the best gas mileage of 29 MPG combined. However, the 2020 Sorento pushes the Japanese hard with its sense of practicality, value for money proposition, and a more powerful motor. The 2020 Sorento also offers a much better infotainment system and comes loaded with many driver-assistance features on the higher trims too.
The 2020 Kia Sorento has a lot of things going for it. The car scored high on versatility offering a third-row seat, which all of the rivals miss out on. The cabin space and interior fit and finish are also quite impressive. Along with that, the performance on offer from the larger 3.3L V6 motor and the impeccable list of safety and infotainment features on offer makes the 2020 Sorento a preferable choice for large families who want a mid-size SUV with enough grunt to do all the chores. Hence, if you are on the lookout for a family SUV, the 2020 Kia Sorento should be on top of your list.
