2020 Lexus ES 350 Review

Pros

  • Uptown interior
  • Great driving dynamics
  • Comfortable ride quality

Cons

  • Complex infotainment arrangement
  • No option of folding down the rear seats

The Lexus ES 350 faces competition mainly from the homeland brands such as Nissan and Honda. The major contenders that the ES 350 goes against are the Nissan Maxima, Infiniti Q50, and the Acura TLX.

Overview

The Japanese perspective of luxury and performance wrapped together in a bundle of joy. This is how we’d like to explain the Lexus ES 350. The 2020 Lexus ES 350 is a part of the seventh-generation ES generation that was launched in 2019 and marks the completion of three-decades of a glorious run.

Pricing and Features
8.5/10

The Lexus ES 350 is offered in 3 trim options- the base ES 350 Sedan, the Lexus ES 350 Luxury, and the ES 350 Ultra Luxury. Prices for the base sedan start from $39,900 and go up to $43,750 for the Ultra Luxury variant. Though there is no powertrain alteration for any of the trim and the main prospects which differentiate the three trims from each other, it is the comfort features they have on offer.

The base Lexus ES350 comes equipped with all the bells and whistles that one can expect from a car of this segment. However, just in case you can stretch your budget, the Lexus ES 350 Luxury has features that are totally worth the additional price. Features such as the leather seating, heated and ventilated front seats, wood interior trim, and ambient interior lighting, enhances the luxury quotient for the Lexus ES 350.

Engine and Performance
7.5/10

Under the hood, the Lexus ES 350 gets a rev-happy 3.5-liter V6 engine that accelerates authoritatively and remains solid throughout its rev-range. The V6 fitted inside of that spindle grille of the Lexus ES 350 can fabricate 302 hp along with 267 lb.-ft. Of torque. Though the torque figure seems fine, the rpm range it kicks at seems a bit too far for a car of this segment.

The Lexus ES 350 employs an 8-speed shiftable automatic transmission that delivers the power to the ride’s rear wheels pretty effortlessly. The transmission arrangement is responsive and delivers power as and when you hit that pedal.

The Lexus ES 350 is the priciest option of the list with a sticker price of $39,900 for the base trim. For this price what you get is class-leading horsepower figures. The Nissan Maxima and the Infiniti Q50 make a close chase with 302 ponies, followed up by the Acura TLX with 290 ponies.

How fast is the Lexus ES 350?

The 3.5-liter V6 fitted inside the Lexus ES 350 is capable enough of making the ride sprint from 0-60 in just 6.1 seconds. The ride does a quarter-mile dash in 14.6 seconds, which again happens to be a respectable figure.

The 8-speed transmission of the ES 350 with a wider ratio spread for both better acceleration and improved efficiency. The V6 engine feels smooth and refined even when cruising at high speeds, emitting a pretty good sound when you pin the throttle pedal.

The Lexus ES 350’s 0-60 figure seems decent but is only able to manage 3rd position in the comparison charts, followed up by the Infiniti Q50 which takes 6.4 seconds to go from 0 to 60 mph.

The Nissan Maxima and the Acura TLX lead the way with a 0-60 sprint time of 5.7 seconds. The rides lead in the quarter-mile comparison as well, covering the distance in 14.3 and 14.5 seconds respectively.

What about the braking performance of the Lexus ES 350?

The brake pedal of the Lexus ES 350 travels long and feels somewhat squishy and dazy in the beginning, but provides its full brake force after some time. The 12.5 and 13.0-inch rotors fitted towards the front and the back make the car depreciate from a speed of 60 to 0 mph in 110 feet but witnesses a mild nosedive.

The 110 feet stopping distance is a great improvement over the previous model’s 136 feet, owing to the increased size of the brake rotors in the front and back. The brake pedal altogether has a mediocre feel to it.

The Lexus ES 350 is one of the heaviest vehicles in this segment and gets the biggest rear brake rotors as compared to other rivals. The ride pulls off the best stopping distance, followed up by the Acura TLX and the Infiniti Q50, with both the rides coming from 60-0 in 113 and 114 feet respectively. The Nissan Maxima obtains the last spot wit a stopping distance of 120 feet.

What about its driving dynamics?

The Lexus ES 350 is a mid-level luxury sedan, and you can surely feel the luxury quotient in its ride quality. The Lexus ES 350 is a ride that wraps great driving dynamics along with plush comfort in a silent cruiser bundle.

Coast it over knocks and potholes, the car charmingly shocks with such readiness and agile suspension; its treatment of corners, be that as it may, feels poor and dreary. However, on the off chance that you need to get away from the sentiment of a mundane, rich tranquil ride, simply engage the Sport mode and get ready to witness the athletic capabilities of the ES 350. The sport mode stiffens the drivetrain with a sturdy wheel joined by a sportier ride. The 2020 ES 350 is one of those vehicles that figures out how to shrivel around you as you hustle it along, feeling a lot littler than its full-size car measurements would show.

The steering wheel of the Lexus ES 350 feels nicely weighted in proportion to the car’s dimensions. Though we won’t say that the steering is great at feedbacks, cause it’s not, yet feels convincing enough. However, the one thing that the steering column of the Lexus ES 350 is great at is the feedback part.

Fuel Economy
8.5/10

The Lexus ES 350 can go a distance of 22 city miles or 32 expressway miles on a single gallon, thus summing the combined mpg to somewhere around 26 miles per gallon. The figures seem great for a ride that comes fitted with a V6 engine. However, in case these 26 miles per gallon do not bring a smile upon your face, you can always go for the Lexus ES 300 hybrid, that nets around 44 miles per gallon without compromising on power or performance.

The Acura TLX comes out as the most fuel-efficient car of the segment, with a combined mpg of 27, followed up closely by the Lexus. The Nissan Maxima and the Infiniti Q 50 offer a combined mpg of 24 and 23 respectively. However, despite a great set of mpg figures, the Lexus ES 350 offers a range that is comparatively pretty low in comparison to the competitors, owing to the small fuel tank.

Interior
8.0/10

Lexus ES 350 adorns the luxury sedan tag in a well-mannered way, and the ride’s interior stands firm on the expectations one keeps from a car that carries such a character. The interior is very roomy and will not feel congested to the front or the rear seat passengers. There’s ample space in all the directions making the occupants feel at ease at all times. The seats are comfortable, firm, and supportive and the absence of excessive side bolsters makes getting in and out of the car a cakewalk. The rear seats too are very bit comfortable and have a wide, flat, and deep orientation which makes it a comfortable spot to be in, even for long hours.

The noise insulation in the Lexus ES 350 is not compromised for the sake of performance. The ES 350 absorbs most of the bumps and breaks without transmitting them to the cabin. The engine and road noise are as good as nill. However, there’s some level of wind noise at high speeds, but that is mainly because of the absolutely muffled engine and road noise that makes the wind part a bit more evitable.

The car’s high center console provides good overall visibility and the 10-way adjustable seats ensure that the drivers of all sizes and types are able to find their sweet-spot. The surfaces inside the Lexus ES 350 depict the detailing found inside a typical Lexus with tight panel gaps and detailed stitching.

Does it come loaded with tech inside?

The Lexus ES 350 employs the Lexus multimedia system to fulfill the infotainment duties which beams all the information on an 8.0-inch display which is standard across all ES 350 models. The screen size can be increased for some extra bucks though. The screen presents you with crisp graphics that have clear visibility under bright conditions.

However, it’s not the screen of the ES 350 that needs updates. The primary method of interacting with the infotainment panel is via a touchpad controller, which requires you to divert all of your attention towards it to perform even the smallest of functions.

What about utility?

The Lexus ES 350 offers a generous amount of cargo volume with 16.7 cubic feet of space beneath its trunk. The trunk can fit in most of the luggage for your family weekend getaway while at the same time hold the golf clubs for you.

However, the one side that the Lexus ES 350 has is that the rear seats are just too resolute to fold down. The seats cannot be folded down thus stowing longer items becomes a problem.

Competition
7.0/10

Lexus ES 350 vs. Nissan Maxima

Priced at $34,240, the Nissan Maxima is one of the most reasonable offerings of the segment. The ride houses a 3,5L V6 which can generate a punchy 300 hp along with 261 lb.-ft. Of torque. The Nissan Maxima is equitably faster than the Lexus ES 350 and can complete the 0-60 dash in 5.7 seconds as compared to the ES 350s 6.1 seconds. However, what the Maxima lacks is the luxury and the drama associated with the Lexus.

Lexus ES 350 vs. Acura TLX

Seems like the Japanese roots have been making a desperate effort of reviving the luxury-sedan market in the States. The Acura TLX, which is the cheapest offering of the segment and presents a tough fight to the ES 350. though, the Acura TLX falls short in some places as compared to the Lexus ES 350. Triumphing in terms of performance, interior space, overall opulence, and quality, the ES 350 takes the top spot here.

Final Verdict
8.2/10

ES 350 has consistently stood as a recognized contender in the passage level extravagance car market. The all-new 2020 Lexus ES has an aggressive new look, improved execution and a new attitude altogether. However, the vehicle proceeds with its notoriety of being muffled, pleasurable and reliable. The intrigue of the seventh-age ES reaches out past its looks and the luxury that this car possesses. There are more than enough positive credits to make it worth considering over the contenders.
