The 2020 Lexus GX is a mid-size luxury SUV defined by versatility. The three-row GX is not only engineered for all kinds of terrain but it also displays exceptional craftsmanship. For 2020, Lexus updates the GX’s styling and interior, equip it with more standard features, and adds a new off-roading package to the optional equipment menu.
The current-gen Lexus GX 460, last redesigned for 2010 model year remains largely the same vehicle with frequent styling updates year after year. For 2020, Lexus updates the GX’s styling and interior, equip it with more standard features, and adds a new off-roading package to the optional equipment menu. Starting from $53,000 for the base, GX offers three trim models with a single powertrain option.
The base-model 2020 Lexus GX460 is equipped with more than sufficient standard features to please most buyers in the segment. The 2020 Lexus GX 460 comes in three trims: base, Premium, and Luxury. The key differentiators are the plush luxury and additional features for added comfort. All models come with a naturally-aspirated V-8 engine mated with a six-speed automatic transmission, and four-wheel drive.
Heated and ventilated front seats are available as a standalone option for the base model and standard on Premium and Luxury models. In the Sport Design Package for Premium and Luxury trims, captain’s chairs comprise the second-row seating along with added details to the grille surround, side mirrors, and 19-inch wheels. New for 2020, Premium and Luxury grades are equipped with an elegant Gray Sapele wood with aluminum trim.
A new off-road package that’s available on Luxury grade offers proven off-road technologies such as Multi-Terrain Monitor and Panoramic View Monitors with driver and passenger cameras, transmission cooler, fuel tank protector, Crawl Control, and Multi-Terrain Select. The multi-terrain select lets the driver choose different modes depending on the driving conditions (mud, sand, rocks, and moguls). The system regulates wheel spin by adjusting the brakes and throttle output. Crawl control was available in the 2019 model year, but it's now part of the off-road package.

What do we recommend?
The base-model 2020 Lexus GX460 is equipped with more than sufficient standard features to please most buyers in the segment. For MSRP of $53,000 the base model comes with standard Lexus Safety System+, exterior amenities like automatic LED headlights, DRLs, heated power-adjustable side mirrors and much more. The cabin is also home to a lot of standard features such as keyless entry, dual-zone automatic climate control, faux-leather upholstery, etc.
Under the hood, the 2020 GX receives no change. It still uses the 4.6-liter V-8 engine that produces 301 hp and 329 lb-ft of torque. The shifting duties are handled by the 6-speed automatic transmission to drive four-wheels. When we put the shifter in the drive, the body moves forward even on pushing the brakes, that’s a transmission problem. However, on the cruising speeds transmission shifts smoothly and the cabin remains quiet.
Going uphill or stepping the throttle, V-8 growls with a vibrant roar. A full-time 4-wheel drive system with Torsen limited-slip center differential and electronic differential lock makes this Lexus formidable than ever and suggests anything is possible.

The Lexus lives up to its standards with the GX 460 but the power is enough for the daily commute. The German rivals offer either inline-6 or the V-6 which perform better both in terms of power as well as efficiency. Also, the Lexus GX 460 is the heaviest of the lot with the least productive powerhouse.
The 329 lb-ft of torque peaks relatively low at 3,500 RPM. The V-8 is smooth and delivers plenty of oomph. With the automatic transmission shifting unobtrusively at all times to distribute power to all four wheels.

During stop-start acceleration, throttle response seems to be eagerly waiting to take you forward. But at higher speeds, the GX is slow to accelerate. This hefty Lexus takes under 8 seconds to dash to 60 mph and can tow up to 6,500 lbs.
The Lexus GX uses Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System (KDSS) which keeps it in level irrespective of the terrain. Further, adaptive variable suspension with Comfort, Normal, and Sport driving settings, GX showcases exceptional ride and handling characteristics.
The Normal drive mode blends the traits for an ideal ride and handling while the comfort mode is too soft and feels disconnected. Also, the Sport mode stiffens the things up for a hard and jittery ride, better for off-roading. In the urban landscape, the GX is a stablemate. The body-roll remains imminent considering the tall stature and high-center of gravity.
The off-roading poweress is what differentiates this SUV from the rest in the segment. The dual-purpose luxury vehicle, GX 460 supplies 8.1 inches of ground clearance and features downhill and hill assist control. Light-offroading is no problem for the base. Add the new off-road package this SUV will match the likes of Land Rover and Jeep.
Although versatile driving dynamics of the GX 460 assigns a unique character to the SUV. However, to spoil the sun a bit, brake pedal remains the weakest dynamic trait. The brakes engage suddenly at times which becomes hard to modulate for smooth stops.

Otherwise, the brakes are obedient and bring the car to a prompt stop as and when required, in any condition. The feedback is sufficient and the large ventilated brakes don’t fade. Further, the standard is the Four-wheel power-assisted discs, with four-sensor, four-channel Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) complemented by Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist.
The Lexus GX is not a fuel-efficient vehicle for its class. The EPA ratings are nothing to show-off and highlight the greedy nature of the powertrain. The GX uses 23.0 gallons of a fuel-tank which can take you 368 miles between stops at the gas station.

The German precision and efficiency undoubtedly are more than efficient to keep the expenses under control. The BMW X5 for its rear-wheel-drive gets 23 mpg combined. The Audi Q7 and Mercedes-Benz GLS class shares 21 mpg combined for the AWD system. Notable is that all rivals have better power and acceleration at the same time
Lexus GX has been plush throughout its lifetime. Although the GX recieves new premium materials, the technology, and interior design are pretty old, If you can ignore the old tech, though, the rest of the interior might please you.
For 2020, Lexus introduces two major interior changes for the GX 460. The first is the new Rioja Red interior, with red leather and a black headliner. Second is the replacement of Mahagony wood trim in the Premium and Luxury trim with a new gray Sapele wood, which looks polished and complements the red interior nicely.
The rest remains the same in the GX’s interior. flaut=nting analog cabin in a digital age reveals the age more than anything else. But fans of buttons and Knobs will be delighted since the GX’s controls are easy to use and clearly labeled.

Getting in/out of Lexus GX might ask you to hop but once inside the journey will be more than comfortable. The GX has standard seating for seven people in three rows. The first and second row is spacious and has ample room for all adults. Unhappy will be the third-row adults, best left for children. The optional second-row captain’s chair reduces the seating to six.
For you to identify the inception of GX 460, the outdated infotainment system will accurately signify the age. From its small touchscreen display to the design of center console signify reminiscent of last decade’s car. Lack of Apple Carplay and Android Auto compatibility and unpolished voice recognition system leaves Lexus behind the many competing models.
Standard features include Navigation, Amazon Alexa, an 8-inch touchscreen, HD radio, nine-speaker audio system, Bluetooth and four USB ports which include two rear ports. Optional you get a 17-speaker premium audio system, a dual-screen rear-seat entertainment system, and Lexus Enform App Suite.
However, thanks to Lexus Enform Remote service which is an app-based technology compatible with smartphones and smartwatch. It enables us to start the engine and climate control, check the fuel level and more with the help of Siri, Google Assistant, and Amazon Alexa.
The Lexus GX 460 has less cargo space than many of its rivals. The question of practicality looms over GX but remains unanswered for almost a decade. Given the versatility of GX, lack of cargo utility is a concern.
Behind the third-row you can line up grocery bags, that’s all. The figure of 11.6 cu-ft is just relevant when you are stacking items. Even the maximum cargo capacity of 64.7 cu-ft isn’t good for the class. Further, interior space is not generous either. Note, loading heavy items becomes further difficult because of tall stature and high load floor.

The three-row configuration is still standard, but the third row is easy to fold for a flat cargo floor. The second row can also be folded, but that won't provide a fully flat layout, as the seatbacks don't go all the way down.
It is hard to miss the bold and enlightened presence of the Lexus GX. With no more than a glace, the 2020 GX has a high head-turning quotient. The most obvious of the exterior style updates that 2020 GX gets is a bigger spindle grille, which looks good. It aligns well with the redesigned triple-beam LED headlights, standard for 2020.
The available Sport Design Package puts an extra touch on the luxury SUV with attention to details, such as an exclusive lower grille surround, rear valence, side mirrors, matte black exhaust tip, scarlet taillamps and 19-inch alloy wheels which help to fill the wildly flared fenders.

The Lexus GX 460 turns the page to a brighter side, making several driver assistance and collision avoidance features standard for 2020. The GX 460 is equipped to handle today’s modern dynamics and help a family arrive in style, comfort and safety wherever their adventures lead.
The standard Lexus Safety System+ suite of technology includes the Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection, Lane Departure Alert, Intelligent High Beams, and High-Speed Dynamic Radar Cruise Control. Lexus Enform Safety Connect also comes standard and is free for the first 10 years. It provides automatic collision notification, SOS emergency assistance, and quick access to roadside assistance.
However, none of the federal safety rating agencies have rated the Lexus GX 460. IIHS has just revealed the “LATCH ease of use“ rating to be acceptable in 2020 Lexus GX 460.
The BMW X5 offers unmatchable German precision and performance which now combines practicality as well. X5 is somewhat more expensive than the GX 460. The bigger dimensions of BMW X5 translates well in a roomier cabin than the Lexus GX. For some people, bigger is better. If that’s the case, you will be happier with X5. But mind the bigger dimensions lead to the challenge of finding a wide enough spot in a parking lot and also a large turning radius of X5 restricts the maneuverability. However, both share the towing ability and basic warranty. So the purpose will be the key metric while picking the best from the two.
With its lower torque engine, the Audi Q7 doesn’t do as good a job transmitting power to its wheel as the Lexus GX 460. The pricier Audi Q7 offers modern tech at your hand with spacious interiors. Efficiency is another positive trait that comes for the additional cost you pay for Q7 than GX 460. But the Lexus GX offers more than sufficient towing capacity along with off-roading capability. However, Audi Q7 faces a similar problem as the BMW X5 that is a large turning radius. Overall, in terms of utility and practicality, Audi Q7 suffice the purpose better than Lexus GX 460.
Among the lot, Mercedes-Benz GLE 450 top the pricing as well as the performance table. With mighty power and torque, GLE 450 surpasses the excitement on offer by the Lexus GX 460. Further, the fuel-efficient Merc allows for more interior space and an ergonomically designed modern-day interior for utmost comfort and luxury. The GLE 460 benefits from a longer wheelbase, enhances comfort. That said, Lexus GX 460 is a dual-purpose SUV, offers luxurious city ride and off-roading adventure at will.
The undaunted Lexus GX 460, apart from its award-winning dependability may be purchased because of its versatility and off-roading capability. No other premium luxury SUV is capable of the same. Thirsty with fuel, lacking utility, and technologically well behind the competition, the Lexus GX awaits a complete redesign.
