About 2020 Lexus LC 500

3.9

Overall Rating

Unlike its predecessor, the LC is a true Grand Tourer and boy are we happy to say that Lexus has nailed it with the LC 500

The LC was introduced as the spiritual successor to Lexus’s halo car, the LFA. But unlike the LFA which aimed to take on some of the biggest names in the supercar industry, the LC took a different approach. Unlike its predecessor, the LC is a true blue Grand Tourer and boy, are we happy to say that Lexus has nailed it with the LC 500. It might not be the world's best GT car and it does not pretend to be one either. Instead, it brings its own character into the game which is what works in favor of this Japenese masterpiece.

The creases and curves of the LC look like a finely crafted piece of Japanese origami piece. That's just one part of the story, the amount of tech that's been packed into this car makes it just as powerful as one of the systems that NASA used to operate the Apollo mission.

There LC 500 is only offered in a single trim level but we would definitely suggest you to tick a few optional extras such as the optional 21 inch wheels and the carbon fiber roof to take the looks of the LC up a notch.

2020 Lexus LC 500 Review

Pros

  • Sharp design language
  • Tech laden interior
  • Punchy naturally aspirated V8 power plant
  • Symphonic exhaust note

Cons

  • Average MPG Figures
  • Handling not as sharp as competitors

Pricing and Features
8.0/10

The 2020 LC 500 is offered in a single feature-packed trim. Lexus, however, offers quite a few optional extras out of which we would highly recommend such as the Mark & Levinstein audio system and a few other optional extras for the exterior which includes the carbon fiber roof and the 21-inch alloy wheels.

Trim

MSRP (RWD)

Which trim do we recommend?

There LC 500 is only offered in a single trim level but we would definitely suggest you tick a few optional extras such as the optional 21-inch wheels and the carbon fiber roof to take the looks of the LC up a notch.

Engine and Performance
7.5/10

Lexus has married it's symphonic naturally aspirated V8 to a state of the art 10-speed transmission which effectively combines a conventional 4-speed torque converter unit to a CVT transmission in a sequence which is then made to simulate a 10-speed transmission which delivers seamless shifts and helps in unleashing the full potential of this V8 powertrain.

A 10-speed transmission might seem like a gear too much for any car but somehow the Lexus engineers made it work flawlessly with the 5.0L V8. This car is extremely bipolar and in this context its a compliment.

*2019 Figures used for reference purposes only

The reason being this Lexus has impeccable street manner as it ponders down streets in complete silence and that 10-speed transmission delivers butter smooth shifts which are barely noticeable but put your food down and some sort of wizardry transforms the engine and the transmission to deliver brutal shifts and an exhaust note that's simply intoxicating.

How fast is it?

A great big natural aspirated V8 dressed up in a futuristic body shell might fool you into thinking that the LC 500 is a throw bread supercar. But if that's the image that’s stuck in your head then the LC might disappoint you. In Spite of that angular body and that glorious exhaust note, the LC 500 is a GT car and expecting anything more out of it would be criminal.

The revised gear ratios from the 2019 update do help it shift better and a wee bit faster than before but the LC is best enjoyed cruising down a winding stretch of tarmac while soaking in the scenery along with that glorious V8 rumble.

How well does it stop?

The LC’s breaks aren’t as sharp as its body lines. The breaks might have the numbers going in its favor when 15.7 ich and 14.1-inch rotors for the front and rear respectively, but the size does not help with the feedback department as the brakes feel wooden at most points which could do with some TLC.

Braking performance overall doesn't leave much to be desired and overall, most customers will be happy with what the Lexus has to offer, in terms of the braking. The car maintains a linear path under heavy braking as well.

The ride of the LC is sublime, to say the least, with its electronic wizardry which includes a limited-slip differential and low center of gravity, the LC 500 does manage to hold its ground quite well. The suspension setup onboard the LC 500 is clearly tuned towards comfort but it does a pretty commendable job and cornering as the body roll is very well contained.

The use of active dampers and various drive modes ensure that the LC 500 is also capable of taking up some high spirited driving. The three-spoke steering wheel translates a good amount of feedback to the driver even though it isn’t the best when it comes to agility. Hence the LC 500 proves to be an easy car to live with on a daily basis thanks to its light steering but that might be the reason why the LC isn’t the perfect track tool.

Fuel Economy
7.5/10

In a day and age where most of its European and German rivals are ditching big engines and going with turbos to extract more power out of their downsized power plants, Lexus has gone old school in an attempt to revive the sheer joy that a naturally aspirated engine is capable of generating. But the LC by no means is an eco-warrior with its 5.0L V8 and it will not be saving any polar bears either with its 16 mpg average fuel economy.

Interior

The LC 500’s interiors can be best described as fine-crafted automotive origami. Each panel looks meticulously put together and touches to make it stand out from other Lexus products are very evident.

Everything from the door handle to the layered panel on the door cards looks like the work of a futuristic visionary. It might not be the most practical or ergonomic but it surely is one of the prettiest interiors we have come across in anything with wheels.

The rear bench onboard the LC 500 is best left alone or at best left for child seats or toddlers as anyone with projections resembling legs might have an issue sticking to the back seats. The front seats, however, are quite comfortable and feature seat heating and ventilation apart from the standard electronic adjustment, but what might come as a surprise to some is the fact that the LC misses out on massaging seats which is a shame considering the LC’s GT credentials and its price tag.

The LC might be packed with tech but getting the hang of it might take some expert guidance from the folks dressed in white lab coats from NASA. The infotainment features a high res widescreen display as expected from a high-end luxury Grand Tourer such as the LC, but that where the good news ends for this infotainment as the touchpad setup is redundant and takes ages to get used to, even after that it is not at all intuitive to use. The only saving grace for this infotainment setup has to be the fabulous Mark and Levenson surround sound system which sounds almost as good as the V8 rumble.

What's there to entertain you?

Lexus has upped the ante with the new LC 500. Owing to feedback from customers, the new LC 500 comes loaded with all the bells and whistles that you'd expect from a car in the 21st century. The touchscreen system feels slick in response. Sunlight legibility is great as well.

  • LCD Instrument Cluster with MID
  • Apple Car Play and Android Auto connectivity
  • SiriusXM Satellite/HD Radio with Homelink
  • Scout GPS with Subscription-Free Traffic and Weather
  • Steering Wheel-mounted Audio, Cruise, MID and Voice control
  • Lexus Enform App Suite 2.0
  • 4G LTE with Wi-Fi support

How much cargo can it store?

A Grand Tourer is only expected to perform a certain set of tasks which usually involves taking its rich owners on cross-continental journeys with enough space to carry their Louis Vitton duffle bags along with space for a set of Golf Clubs depending on the occasion. The LC 500, however, fails to tick this box with its poor cargo capacity courtesy a lousy 5.4 cubic feet cargo bay and a tailgate opening which is too narrow for anything bigger than a basketball.

All in all the LC 500 is not the best choice if you plan to pack for a long trip as a couple of duffel bags is all that the LC 500 can afford to carry in its boot. However, the rear seats do make for good cargo bay as it's not really suitable for seating people over long journeys.

The Design of the LC 500 looks like it will feel right at home in the sequel to Back to the future. The LC 500 is one of those rarities of the auto industry that managed to get from concept to production stage without sacrificing any of its radical design elements, giving us an exact version of the concept vehicle in production spec.

Starting with the LC’s front facia, the spindle shape grill placed in the middle of the wide-body gives the LC 500 tonnes of presence. The Lights on the LC 500 are probably the best representation of headlights in the automotive business. The triple projector setup with the LED DLRs merging into the body is modern automotive art at its best. The side profile is simple and uncluttered but the bold creases make an everlasting impression on whoever lays eyes on this magnificent machine.

The rear profile of the LC is straight out of 2120 and that is largely due to the use of the 3D hologram style tail lamps which is nothing close to what we have seen from the automotive industry. The quad exhaust tips are blended seamlessly into the two squared out exhaust tips which look like an aesthetic extension to the vertically slatted scoops in the bumper which also happen to house the LED turn indicators.

Lexus LC 500 vs Jaguar F Type R-Dynamic

The F-Type is undeniably the sportier car off the lot and if top down, wind in the hair motoring is what you are into then it's definitely the one for you. The F-Type range also offers a wide range of engine options which range from the base 2.0 four-cylinder unit all the way up to the top of the line supercharged V8 and the F-Type is no less of a looker but the LC 500 is the better GT car of the two and the Lexus offers unconventional looks in a sensible package.

Lexus LC 500 vs Nissan GT-R

The Godzilla needs no introduction to the world of supercars and if its outright performance then you can pick the GT-R with your eyes closed as its a tool designed to tackle racetracks and shatter lap records but if elegance is the name of your game then the Lexus is the one for you, in spite of the fact that the GT-R offers more usable interior and definitely a more usable infotainment but it still lacks the character that the LC 500 manages to bring to the game.

Final Verdict

Should you buy the LC 500?

The LC 500 is Lexus’s answer to what the future of automobiles would look like. The LC is more of a statement than an automobile with its cutting edge design language and the unadulterated V8 engine note, the LC is something to be savored and not just driven around. Even with almost 500 horsepower and a manic 10-speed transmission, the thrust is delivered in an elegant fashion which is simply soul-satisfying. This car truly is a brutal samurai dressed up in a fancy tux.
