2020 Lexus UX 250h hybrid Review

a 2.0-liter inline four-cylinder engine. This engine borrows a hand from integrated dual electric motor-generators and a nickel-metal hydride battery pack to simultaneously churn 181 hp. Also integrated into the rear differential is an additional 7hp electric motor-generator to further aid the all-wheel drive unit.

The 2020 Lexus UX 250h is more than just another crossover hybrid SUV. It is the one hybrid looking to find a sweet spot between performance and practicality, while trying to be as conservative as possible too. At the same time it looks to offer unmatched luxury to cater to those who ask for it. With a nicely setup interior, extremely efficient powertrain and all-round drivability, the Lexus UX 250h has what it takes to easily be all that and more.

Pricing and Features
7.5/10

The 2020 Lexus UX 250h will be available in as many as three variants. The lineup begins with Base, followed by F Sport, and lastly, Luxury. The price for the Base variant begins at $34,350, while the top-level Luxury costs $39,550. All trims come with a long list of features from the factory. Only, the F Sport and Luxury variants get certain trim specific features to match.

Common across the range is a 181 hp 2.0-liter inline four-cylinder engine that works alongside a dual electric motor and a nickel-metal hydride battery pack. They together regulate a continuously variable automatic transmission that sends power to all the wheels of this Lexus hybrid.

The Luxury variant makes most sense in the lineup of the 2020 Lexus UX 250h. It adds a lot of noteworthy upgrades and raises the elegance of the standard UX 250h to another level. For an additional $5,000 over the Base, the Luxury trim offers a lot more car.

Engine and Performance
6.5/10

Powering the 2020 Lexus UX 250h is a rather humble setup. A 2.0-liter inline four-cylinder motor that makes 181 hp works in coordination with integrated dual electric motor-generators and a nickel-metal hydride battery pack to simultaneously supply power to all the wheels of this hybrid. All that power reaches the four corners of this Lexus with the help of a 2-speed continuously variable automatic transmission.

Also integrated into the rear differential is an additional 7hp electric motor-generator to further aid the all-wheel-drive unit. This motor engages at times of acceleration, cornering or in situations where extra traction is needed.

The Lexus UX 250h’s 2.0-liter inline-four is the second most powerful in this lineup. At the top is its low maintenance cousin that gets a 2.5-liter inline-four engine churning 219 hp.

How fast is the Lexus UX 250h?

The 2020 Lexus UX 250h uses an additional 7hp motor integrated into the rear differential to further aid its all-wheel-drive unit in times of acceleration. Consequently, as soon you step on the gas, this Lexus jolts forward.

However, acceleration is not an instant. The UX 250h takes its time to get all charged up. Though once in the zone, the surge of power is plenty and consistent throughout. Thereby, the driver’s input is met with much better acceleration.

Off the line, the Lexus LX 250h is fast but not as much as the Toyota RAV4 Hybrid. However, as the road gets longer, the UX 250h starts to pull and pull is all it does.

What about the braking performance of the Lexus UX 250h?

The four wheels of the Lexus UX 250h all come equipped with power-assisted discs with anti-braking features. As you go down hard on the pedal, the input translates directly to the brakes, which respond in direct proportionality. So there’s no denying the fact that this Lexus brakes much more instantly than it can accelerate.

Also, brake-fade does not seem to creep in on this hybrid crossover. The additional motor-generator at the back also ensures that the UX250h does not steer sideways as you stomp on the brake pedal.

When compared against its adversaries, the UX250h seems to be on par with all others. The Outlander PHEV manages to outsmart all of its rivals in this comparison. However, the most shocking performance comes from the ultra-popular RAV4 that takes a massive 143ft to stop from 60MPH.

What about its driving dynamics?

All Lexus’s are known for their comfortable ride quality and precise handling. The 2020 UX 250h is no different. This Lexus UX 250h features 3 different driving modes, which are: Sport, Normal, and Eco-Drive. The different modes alter throttle response for varying scenarios that lie ahead. Of all those modes, the Eco-Drive is the least enthusiastic, and also the most efficient.

In the city, in Normal mode, the standard suspension handles most surfaces with elegance. The only downside being the UX 250h’s compact dimensions that enhances some of those larger undulations. Otherwise, the charming composure of this hybrid crossover is very well suited for those rides around the town. Further enhancing this Lexus’s maneuverability in the city traffic is its adequately weighted steering, which feels reassuringly direct.

On the track, this crossover hybrid SUV from Lexus behaves more like a standard car. Switching to Sport mode stiffens things up only marginally. The response from the throttle sharpens to enhance performance. Further helping this Lexus hybrid with cornering is the additional motor integrated into the rear differential. The motor engages while getting in and out of corners to ensure that additional traction is maintained in such scenarios.

Fuel Economy
9.0/10

Hybrid vehicles are known for their eco-friendly motors and extensive range. Amongst those hybrids, the Lexus UX 250h is one of the most fuel-efficient crossover SUVs available in America. Lexus greatly benefits from Toyota’s proficiency with hybrid technology in this case.

Both RAV4 and UX 250h offer similar MPG efficiencies. However, the RAV4 gets a much bigger fuel tank. Hence, it offers more range.

Interior
6.5/10

So far the Lexus UX 250h has been able to impress us greatly with its driving demeanor and efficient powertrain. However, this Lexus is not without flaw and a major one at that. Stepping inside this hybrid SUV reveals this Lexus’s biggest drawback which is its second-row seats.

Despite plenty of available headroom, legroom in the second row is less than adequate. Also, the rear pillars make it feel a bit too claustrophobic. Ergonomically, the seats are plenty comfortable though. Especially in the front row, the seats are eight-way power-adjustable. The driver’s seat gets special treatment with two-way lumbar support.

The steering wheel and shift knobs are all wrapped in leather. A NULUXE trim covers the interior of this hybrid crossover. So other than the cramped second row, the cabin of this Lexus is otherwise fairly upscale and comfortable.

When it comes to passenger comfort, the Outlander tops the ranks with best-in-class cabin space.

Does it come loaded with tech inside?

The Base Lexus UX 250h gets a 7-inch touchscreen. Moving up to the top of the ladder Luxury trim replaces the 7-inch display with a bigger 10.3-inch split screen infotainment unit. Regardless of the size of screen, the list of standard tech aboard this crossover hybrid SUV includes:

  • Apple CarPlay
  • Amazon Alexa
  • Android Auto
  • Lexus ENFORM
  • Smart access
  • HD radio
  • SiriusXM satellite radio

What about utility?

As a practical hybrid SUV, the 2020 Lexus UX 250h provides plenty of space to store your stuff. However, its compact design and not-so-long wheelbase can only free up so much space. The lack of legroom in the second row results very much from expanding the cargo area.

What are the different creature comforts on offer in the Lexus UX 250h?

The 2020 Lexus UX 250h gets several bells and whistles under its belt that make it as comfortable for occupants as any other Lexus in the market. This Lexus ensures that its occupants are treated with the following comfort features:

  • 8-way power-adjustable front seats
  • Two-way lumbar driver seat support
  • Head-up display
  • Remote touchpad
  • Dynamic voice command
  • Four USB ports
  • Illuminated entry system
  • Dual-zone climate control with interior air filter
  • Heated/ventilated front seats

Exterior
6.0/10

The UX is the smallest crossover that Lexus manufactures. Accordingly, the UX 250h follows in its footsteps. The only difference being the UX 250h’s hybrid and model name badging. Other than that, at the front are Twin-LED headlamps complete with integrated daytime running lights. The massive, blacked-out trademark Lexus spindle grille houses the brand's logo. From up-front the UX 250h looks a lot more aggressive for a hybrid.

Things at the sides take a rather sedate turn as is typical with all Lexuses. The slightly sculpted doors make the UX 250h look even more compact. The straight shoulder line flows all the way to the back to meet the arching roofline. Also the square wheel arches are wrapped in black claddings to add some ruggedness. Things take a sharp turn as we move towards the back.

Sharp lines come in from all sides to merge at the tailgate which gets a light band that connects the brake lights on either sides. The LED taillamps add to the overall aesthetics of this Lexus. The rear design is complete with a Lexus logo in the center and black and silver claddings on the bumper.

What are the most eye-catching features?

The most enticing exterior features of the 2020 Lexus UX 250h are:

  • Spindle grille with mesh pattern
  • LED DRLs
  • LED headlamps
  • Dual tone wing mirrors
  • Body claddings
  • 18-inch split-five-spoke alloy wheels
  • LED taillights

Safety
9.5/10

Authorities are yet to test the 2020 Lexus UX 250h for its safety. Nevertheless, Lexus ensures the utmost safety for the driver and other people driving around in this UX 250h. The list of safety features include

  • Back-up camera with dynamic gridlines
  • 10-airbag system
  • Blind spot monitoring
  • Cross-traffic alert
  • Stability control
  • Rain-sensing windshield wipers
  • Rigid body structure with crumple zones

Competition
6.0/10

Lexus UX 250h vs. MINI SE Countryman

The Lexus UX 250h is very competent for a subcompact hybrid SUV. It outperforms the MINI SE Countryman in almost all considerable aspects. The MINI’s only suit is its more spacious cabin. Other than that the Lexus UX 250h is a much better SUV. it is also a lot cheaper than the SE Countryman.

Lexus UX 250h vs. Toyota RAV4 Hybrid

The Toyota RAV4 hybrid simply dominates. Not only is it cheaper than the Lexus UX 250h, it has a much more powerful engine, bigger fuel tank, and best-in-class cargo space. The Lexus definitely offers a more premium feel. But when it comes to practicality, which is what most SUVs are all about, the Lexus UX 250h is no match for the Toyota RAV4 hybrid.

Final Verdict
6.3/10

Not many hybrid crossover SUVs out there satisfy as much as the Lexus UX 250h. It is fairly priced and offers a lot more premium features than some of the more expensive hybrid crossover SUVs. If it were not for its cramped second row and boot, this Lexus clearly has what it takes to be a segment leader. However, in order to get an even higher value for even less expensive, do consider the UX 250h’s low-maintenance cousin, the Toyota RAV4 hybrid.
