Overall Rating
For 2020 Lincoln Navigator starts at $75,825 and power figures remain the same with a robust 3.5L twin-turbo V6 powering either 2 or all 4 wheels with 510 ft-lbs of torque and 450hp. As far as competition goes, the Navigator is pitted against its sibling the Ford Expedition, the ever-popular Cadillac Escalade, and the recently introduced BMW X7.
The Germans have earned a name for themselves in the "Grand" SUVs segment with their amazing drivability and build quality, sure, but where they lack is where the Lincoln Navigator comes in. It is one of the very few SUVs in the market with a practical third row and a massive presence that outclasses most of its contenders. Some of its bones may have been borrowed from The Ford Expedition, but Lincoln has done a fair job in hiding those elements pretty well.
Wearing the flag for the manufacturer, the Navigator brings the best of American luxury wrapped in extravagant dimensions and unmatched opulence. It may have never set a record in terms of ride quality, but hey, you wouldn't get a 24-way adjustable seating couch even in a Rolls Royce. Yes, the 2020 Navigator can bear the tantrums of each muscle in your body. Loaded with creature comforts up to its gills, should you short-list the Navigator before arriving at a decision? Let's find out!
Stay away from the Standard trim, even though it's optioned with some decent kit, it misses out on some essentials. Going with the Reserve trim would be the ideal choice. Optioning it with the trailer tow package would be advisable if you’re an avid camper. However, if you want to go all berserk on luxury, you always got the Black Label sitting atop the lineup for you.

Standard, Reserve, Black label, and the latter two’s respective extended-wheelbase versions would be the trims available for 2020 Navigator. All, but the Black Label, can be had either in 4x4 or 4x2 variants. The Black Label marks the highest spec variant in the lineup and sticks to 4x4 only. The extended versions (L) offer additional cargo storage and a larger fuel tank. The Standard trim misses out on the compatibility with various optional features though. The 2020 Lincoln Navigator price begins from $75,825 and reaches the $100k mark for the top-of-the-line Black Label trim with 4WD.

There is only one engine option available across all trim levels of the Navigator - a relatively small but potent 3.5L, V6 that squeezes out 450 hp with assistance from two turbochargers. Its class-leading 510 ft-lbs of torque is, in fact, the talking point amongst these big brawny SUVs. The V6 motor comes mated to a 10-speed automatic, which evidently is focussed towards fuel economy (spoiler, It ain’t great). Numbers are healthy but given its size, the Navigator is a wafter than a tarmac shredder.
Though the Navigator's motor has earned a lot of reliability points for its long-lasting traits, it isn't very engaging to drive. The massive weight of the SUV is immediately reflected in its driving traits as it takes a while to get off its feet. Some of the credit goes to considerable turbo-lag as well. This laziness is sure covered up for, as you climb up the rev counter. The Ford-sourced gearbox tends to hold on to gears longer than usual and the shifts aren't exactly seamless. That said, the Navigator won't really appeal to the purist in you.

The Navigator and its sister- the Expedition share the same motor, however, the Expedition's has been de-tuned a bit, inclining a bit more towards fuel economy. The Escalade carries the biggest motor of the lot and still tails the rankings with the least figures here. The BMW X7, on the other hand, leads the segment with its 456HP of power. Furthermore, its peak torque kicking in at almost idling-RPMs should surely impress the performance-hungry purists.
Being a car weighing in well over 5000 lbs, you might presumably think its a slouch off the line. Well, the Navigator dashes from 0-60 in 5.9 seconds - almost a second quicker than its lighter sibling from Ford. The quarter-mile figures too stand proud by marginally tipping above the Cadillac. It does need a push to get off the line - courtesy of the turbo-lag up till 2000RPM, but once it gains some momentum, triple-digit speeds don't seem too far.
On flat-footing the accelerator, the steering encounters some twisting force from the mechanicals beneath. Though not scary, it surely won't inspire you to punch the accelerator very often. That said, we really appreciate the way this SUV behaves even with a small motor under the hood.

Yes, it's evident from the stats that the bigger Bimmer takes the win here. Its classic combo of more power (6hp more than the Lincoln) and less weight worked as it should, but, is the difference a deal-breaker? We believe the chances of you setting up a drag race with your 5000 lbs family SUV would be slim to none. The Escalade's Naturally-aspirated motor is pretty impressive in getting it to gather pace. Some credit also goes to the Escalade's gearbox, as it is slick and offers lightning-fast shifts.
Alright, the Navigator is a family SUV designed to carry 7 and tow a trailer. It’s neither engaging to drive nor will it indulge you to drive spiritedly. However, it will get you from point A to point B wrapped in utmost luxury. If you so wish to mash the throttle and unleash all that Lincoln can offer, you may feel disappointed to know that the steering is numb, the ride is bouncy and anything about lateral G’s is best left undiscussed.
Nevertheless, the Navigator offers what is known as a "nautical" experience on the road, like a yacht on wheels. Lincoln even offers an optional interior theme called the ‘yacht club’ with the Navigator. It doesn't just improve the interior but also brings some mechanical enhancements to improve the ride quality. This is not an exaggeration since it truly feels like a wafter than a sprinter, staying true to the intent. Thanks to its slow steering, better maneuverability, plus the softer springs together help in making the ride more pampering and cushier.
You’ll be pleased to know, although the Navigator is a big brawny SUV, the heft is well-managed by the brakes that come with it. Yes, nose-dive is there, and it gets scary under panic braking too, but the wheels manage to cling on to the tarmac competently.
Stomp onto the brakes and Navigator's safety systems react immediately even before you get hold of a good bite. The ABS, though, interrupts frequently which could get on your nerve at times. Not by German standards, the Lincoln Navigator still manages to impress us better than its primary native rivals.

It can’t be left unnoticed that the BMW X7 just smashes the ball out of the park here by posting figures that are enough to overpower many sedans, let alone SUVs. German ingenuity perhaps? The Navigator doesn't stand a chance against the lighter rivals here. Escalade, on the other hand, just tips the scales slightly against its favor in comparison with the Navigator.
A maximum of 8700 lbs can be towed by the 4x2 variants and the 4x4 trims can tow up to 8300 lbs, cementing the Navigator's presence with credible numbers. The Lincoln Navigator with its torque advantage wins here by a healthy margin. Even when compared with all three rival SUVs from GMC, the Navigator emerges as the most capable of the lot.
That said, all the trims come equipped with a dedicated trailer-mode as standard. The safety systems assisting this feat come in pretty handy in tight maneuvers. Moreover, all those safety assists are offered as standard in all trims. Now that's a plus!

The Bimmer and the Ford Expedition get dwarfed here in this "Grand" SUV segment where the Navigator and the Escalade eat them up for breakfast. Both the latter SUVs, owing to their hefty underpinnings, manage to tow a lot more than the X7 and the Expedition. While that was pretty much intuitive, what surprises us is that the Navigator can pull significantly more than the bigger Escalade. Despite being equipped with a powertrain almost half the Escalade's size, the Navigator can tow 400 lbs more than the Caddie.

Well, if you are looking for an SUV in this segment, chances are that the term "Gas Mileage," will be one of the last thoughts that will come to your mind. And rightfully so. The Lincoln Navigator isn't the most fuel-efficient car in the segment and neither is it trying to be. Even with the 10- Speed auto, the Navigator manages only 18 MPG which seems okay when pitted against its rivals. Given its sister, the Ford seems marginally better than the Lincoln on the efficiency front, it should be noted that the Expedition is 75hp down, and weighs 230lbs less than the Navigator. Therefore, if we factor that in, Lincoln's flagship deserves credit for managing its quench for fuel a bit more efficiently.

The X7, despite being a luxury offering from the Bavarian manufacturer, seems to be interested in more performance than just a good ride. As a result, the BMW X7 offers a low fuel economy despite the lighter curb weight than the competitors. The Expedition, for pretty obvious reasons, offers a better fuel economy than its Lincoln twin. The Escalade's largest fuel tank of the lot ensures lesser fuel stops during long drives, despite the massive gas-guzzler under the hood.
The 2020 Navigator's interior is one of the nicest places to be in, leaps and bounds ahead of the Cadillac Escalade, and certainly feels on par, if not better, in certain aspects with its German rivals. Quality is uncompromised and the choice of materials seems spot on. Easily, the best interior in the segment. There is no shortage of technology inside, and the moment you enter, you are greeted with Lincoln graphics and animations on the display screens which further adds to the opulence of the cabin.
Moving on to the highlight of the Navigator- its seats. Redefining royalty in more than just one way, the 30-way power adjustability of the seats can out shame a Bentley! The cushioning is just perfect, however, they could get a bit bouncy on undulated roads. Acres of space are offered just so all the third-row passengers feel less discriminated. Ample headroom and legroom are available on any seat you pick inside the Navigator. To put it simply, no more "shotgun" for the front seat with the Lincoln Navigator.

While the Escalade might feel a bit more spacious in the front, the rear two rows seem to have been neglected a bit. This is where the Navigator outshines the Caddie Escalade with the most practical third row here, in fact, in the whole segment. Surprisingly, the smaller Lincoln's sibling - the Expedition manages to offer pretty decent space as opposed to the BMW X7. Looks like the "Grandest" SUV, by German standards, gets dwarfed when pitted against the Americans!Â
The older-gen Navigator, though plush inside, wasn't really rich in terms of technology. Thankfully, Lincoln tweaked it for the 2020 production year and this time the Navigator brings a whole new dimension of technology to the feature-list. The infotainment system on offer is Ford’s latest SYNC 3 wrapped around with Lincoln’s skin on top. Never did it show it came from a Ford, providing a seamless transition from one page to another with good feedback from the 10-inch touchscreen display. This unit mimics a proper smartphone, giving you command over most features of the Navigator.
That said, various features associated with the Navigator's infotainment that come as standard are:
As mentioned earlier, the 2020 Lincoln Navigator flaunts one of the best setups inside the cabin in the business. Anything that comes even close to the kind of hospitality on offer in the Navigator costs almost twice. There are a few hiccups in the form of hard plastics here and there, but some cost-cutting was expected considering the minimal price tag.
Having said that, the key features that highlight the essence of the Navigator's cabin are as follows:
The Navigator, with 19.3 cu.-ft of space behind the third row, is the best in the segment. Even with the third row folded the cargo space is still unrivaled with 57.5 cu.-ft.  More than plenty for a weekend trip with the family. However, if you feel this is not enough you can go for the L version which just takes the game up a notch but falls short to the massive Cadillac Escalade's hauling capabilities.
In terms of the loading experience, the Navigator's high stance might require you to lift the load above your hip level before you can push it into the back. Thanks to the adjustable air suspension setup though, the courtesy of which enables you to lower the lift height up to a couple of inches. Also, the power-operated tail-gate certainly eases out things quite a bit, however, it is nothing extraordinary for the Navigator's segment.

There's no challenging the mighty Navigator in this regard. Lincoln has squeezed in a lot of volume in the Navigator, setting it atop the segment. The extended wheelbase version of the Escalade, however, overpowers the "L" trim of the Navigator. The rest of the two SUVs - The BMW X7 and the Ford Expedition stay out of the competition owing to their smaller sizes.
Is the Lincoln Navigator a reliable SUV?
Can you bet on the build quality of the Lincoln Navigator?
There's no doubt that when it comes to handling and performance, the world should take a few lessons from the Germans. And when you need a proper SUV that casts the biggest shadows on the road, you come to the Americans. The BMW X7 might be a large SUV according to German standards, however, this "Large" SUV quickly feels dwarfed once the Lincoln Navigator comes in the picture. This is one of the strong fortes of the 2020 Lincoln Navigator - exceptional styling that unmistakably marks its presence on the road, with no swoopy curves to spoil the mood.
The 2020 Navigator's brawny built tells itself apart from the crowd with just one glimpse. The Lincoln-specific chrome-mesh grille gets the major credit for this. Believe us, this grille isn't as small as it looks in the pictures. You've got to take a look at this SUV in person. At the front, the hood swoops slightly downwards merging fluently into the grille. The all-LED headlamps wrap up the front design neatly with the embossed Lincoln badge sitting proudly in the center.
Move over to the sides and the Navigator sports a typical SUV silhouette with straight bold creases hugging the architecture properly. There are a few chrome inserts here as well, however, you can always opt it out with the "Monochrome" package. The blackened B and C pillars further add to the personality of the car. Not to mention, the 22-inch 21-spoke wheels should appeal to the young masses more. The 9.6 inches of ground clearance can affect the ingress/egress factor, especially for short people. Thankfully, Lincoln had already thought of that and added a small step as a solution for such a dilemma.
The rear of the SUV further accentuates the overall boxy structure of the car. The tailgate stands firm and upright with a large chrome strip seeking immediate attention here. This strip is further underlined by an LED strip that connects both the taillamps. Though the Navigator's structure gets full marks for its massive presence, we think the rear could have done slightly better.

The Ford Expedition and the BMW X7 stay out of the conversation as the Lincoln and Cadillac flagships just eat up these "puny" SUVs with their extravagant dimensions. Now with the youngsters sitting out of the wrestling ring, it all boils down between the Escalade and the Navigator. The Navigator, yet again, surpasses the Cadillac Escalade with the longest wheelbase in the segment.
Now when it comes to the large SUV segment, each contender here brings along a certain flair with its personality that sets it apart from the crowd. The 2020 Lincoln Navigator is no different. It has been studded with various design elements that not only add to the personality of the SUV, but a few of them also come in handy at times. Some of these key highlights that enhance the exterior of the Navigator are:
This being 2020, cars are getting smarter and safer. Lincoln is no short of magnificent when it comes to safeguarding its occupants. With Lincoln Co-pilot 360 package, a lot of driver safety aids like forward collision mitigation, blind-spot detection, and lane-keeping assist are offered as standard. According to NHTSA, the Lincoln Navigator is safe enough to be awarded full marks. Child safety is also given priority in the Lincoln's flagship. Having said that, some of the notable safety features include:
The Escalade in its Luxury trim is, in fact, the direct rival to the Lincoln Navigator. To be fair the Navigator is the better buy amongst them both since the Cadillac Escalade has an outdated interior and imparts much less of a refined experience than the Navigator. However, note that the Cadillac has a rumbling V8 which could tempt you to look at it again.
Being a bit late to the frenzy, the BMW X7 sure came with all there is out there. A serious contender to be pitted against the Navigator, the X7 is a good $8,000 more expensive than the Navigator. Sticking true to their brand's tagline, the BMW is definitely the better driving machine, if not the "Ultimate", amongst both. However, on the luxury front, the Bavarian loses out to the Lincoln Navigator. The latter's sheer size and spacious interiors are a few other things that you will compromise in case you choose the BMW X7.
The sibling to the Navigator, the Ford Expedition is more of a poor man's Navigator. However, if you wish to drop the Lincoln for the Ford, bear in mind that you’re sacrificing the extravagance that the Navigator offers. Mechanically, though, the Expedition uses the same powertrain found under the Navigator's hood, only the former's motor has been de-tuned significantly as opposed to the Navigator.
Long has it been the sole reign of the Cadillac Escalade in the big size SUV segment. Now Lincoln has come up with a stunner which definitely gives the Caddy a run for its money. Since the 2020 Lincoln Navigator gets a lot more standard kit than the outgoing one, indeed this is our pick for the best full-size luxury SUV out there.
The major difference between Select and Reserve is that the former has 4WD as an option whereas the latter gets the 4X4 system as standard and is the only drive available. Moreover, the Reserve trim carries forward all the features from lower trims and adds a Panoramic sunroof and upgraded front seats.
The top trim offered in the 2020 Navigator Lineup is the Black Label which retails for about $96,000. With options, the price can go beyond the 100 grand marks easily. Lincoln markets the Navigator Black Label as a nautical experience.
