Overall Rating
The 2020 Mazda 3 continues without major changes over the previous versions. However, the driver assistance features which were made optional for the previous model years are now offered as standard for specific trims. The price of the 2020 Mazda 3 starts from an MSRP of $22,445 for the base version and is available for sale in 4 trims. Apart from the Mazda 3 hatchback, one also has an option to choose for an AWD drivetrain.
The 2020 Mazda 3 is offered with a starting price of $22,445 and the MSRP goes up to $27,445 for the top-of-the-line Premium Package. This year sees standardization of the active driver aids being made standard which was previously optional. The Mazda 3 is available for sale in a total of 4 different trim configurations and the entire line-up gets a 2.5L 4-cylinder SKYACTIV powertrain as standard.
You can also choose between an FWD or an AWD configuration. Mazda's design language for the new Mazda 3 is inspiring of sorts. The interior remains unchanged and the 2020 Mazda 3 offers MAZDA CONNECTED SERVICE, however, features like Android Auto & Apple CarPlay enter the features list from 'Select Package' onwards.
The Mazda 3 goes head to head with the likes of Honda Civic, Kia Forte, Hyundai Elantra, and Toyota Corolla.Â
The Mazda trims do not carry any engine or performance differences, considering this we’d recommend you go for the Select variant. The Select variant feels a lot more premium from the inside, courtesy to its leather-finished interiors. This trim also offers 18-inch alloys, as compared to the Base trim’s 16-inch, thus enhancing the ride quality.

The 2020 Mazda 3 is offered in 4 trim levels, namely- Base, Select, Preferred, and Premium. The base comes at an MSRP of $22,445, step up to the Select variant, and the MSRP leaps to $23,645. The Premium is the top variant and comes at a sticker price of $27,445.
All Mazda 3 trims now get the i-Activesense Driver Assist feature as standard now. Moreover, a lot of active safety assist features have also been added as a standard to make your M-wheels safer. All other trims, except for the base trim, offer AWD for an additional $1400 on top of the MSRP.

With all the driver aids like automated emergency braking, automatic high-beams, lane-departure warning, and lane-keep assist being made standard with Mazda's iActivsense, the 3 now offers an even better value. The higher trims add more creature comforts and technology to make life even more luxurious.
The 2020 Mazda 3 Select trim is the one to go for with an MSRP of $23,645.
Although the base trim now offers all the driver safety aids as standard, it is better to spend a bit more for the added benefits. The higher cost gets you blind-spot monitor, dual-zone climate control, leatherette upholstery and larger 18-inch wheels. While there is AWD also on offer, unless you need the additional traction, it is best to avoid it to keep the price in check.
"You also get uncommonly sporty and engaging handling, which makes the 3 fun to drive" - edmunds.com
The 2020 Mazda 3 engine remains unchanged with a 2.5L naturally aspirated I4 engine, which is capable enough to generate an imposing 186 hp along with 186 lb-ft of torque. Mazda has not opted for a turbocharged engine for the 3, and hence the power delivery feels linear, hence you'll have to lean in the throttle for better performance.
Coming to the transmission, the ride appoints a 6-speed automatic transmission panel in order to rush these ponies to the front or all wheels. The top trim comes with paddle shifters. Although for manual transmission fanatics, Mazda offers an option for a 6-speed manual gearbox too, for Miata-like precision.
Mazda also offers AWD drivetrain for an added price of $1,400 for better traction in adverse weather conditions. Mazda 3 takes about 7.5 seconds to dash from 0-60 MPH, all the while crossing the quarter-mile mark in about 16 seconds. The top speed is rated for 122 MPH with both manual and automatic transmissions.

Mazda overpowers its competition with the most amount of punch under its hood, with the Civic, not far behind. Hyundai Elantra's CVT lets it down big time with it being efficient and all but at the price of smooth shifting. The more powerful Civic with the turbocharged engine is almost as quick as the Mazda but is considerably pricier as well. Both the Forte and Elantra are far slower off the mark but are quite affordable as well.
With great power (greatest in the segment at least) comes great fuel-burning tendencies, and such is the case with the 2020 Mazda 3. It is most definitely not the greenest compact car around. With a 2.5L I-4, fabricating 186 hp the ride does not really maintain the greatest of relationship with fossil fuels. The 2020 Mazda 3 posts a combined MPG figure of 30, which when compared with the competitors comes out as the lowest of the lot.

AWD versions being heavier than the FWD cars give about 25/33/28 MPG in the sedan form. In this regard, the Honda Civic surely impresses us a lot, even though it's on the heavier side of the spectrum. The Kia Forte is also almost as efficient as the Civic while the Elantra is right behind them. The smaller 13.2-gallon fuel tank capacity of the Mazda 3 does not do justice to its lower fuel efficiency, limiting its driving range.
"The interior is very nicely executed. It definitely has an Audi vibe—upscale, upmarket—but executed with a lot of black plastic." - motortrend.com
Getting inside the 2020 Mazda 3, you will come to notice the premium interior quality of the upscale cabin, which has not changed much since its last refresh in the year 2019. The cabin is extremely silent and filters most of the road and wind noise, coming to the engine noise. The interior of the 2020 Mazda 3, has an intriguing charm to it, with the quality knobs and buttons, creating sync with leatherette packaging all around, that further enhances the upscale feeling of the car. The 2020 Mazda 3 can easily accommodate 5 people and the seats offer unmatchable comfort.
The swooping roof-line, however, takes its toll on the rear headspace of the 2020 Mazda 3 but overall, the ride feels comfortable even for long hours. The front seats also come with an 8-way power adjustment option for the Preferred trim and up. Ingress and egress won't be much of a hassle, because of the wide-opening doors. The Premium package also gets an option for heated seats, providing maximum comfort and Mazda offers 2 upholstery color options for the buyers.Â

Space and utmost comfort is Hyundai's territory, and the Elantra delivers it in spades, overpowering the likes of most of the rivals. It may feel like an underperforming car when one sees its cargo volume with rear seats up, as it offers a below-par 13.2 cu-ft of cargo space. The Honda Civic impresses the most here with an impressive cabin and trunk space that is far better than all the sedans here.Â
All the trims of the Mazda 3 Sedan come fitted with an 8.8-inch focal touchscreen infotainment screen.Â
The panel features crisp graphics and an easy-to-use interface along with redundant knobs and button controls. This makes it easy to use for the driver while on the move. While the lower trims get a decent 8-speaker audio system, the higher trim gets you a more premium Bose surround sound system. "The Mazda 3 punches above its weight class with an upmarket interior, good handling, and optional all-wheel drive." - thecarconnection.com
Mazda cannot go wrong with its design language, and the 2020 Mazda 3 sedan achieving the award for 2020's World Car Design of the Year is a true testament to that fact. Kicking things off on the outside, this new generation Mazda 3 is one hell of a looker, and being a budget-friendly car, boasts the ultimate power to make heads turn. Mazda's new design language, known as KODO follows the less is better ideology. and this has done wonders for them.
One of the best things about the car is that no matter which trims, they'd all get LED lights. The design of the 2020 Mazda 3 is well-thought-out and carries a smooth flowing side body design with each panel infusing just right into the next one. The twin-outlet exhaust looks fantastic as well as sounds incredibly good. Mazda offers alloy wheels as standard and there are 5 different paint color options to choose from.

Overall, Mazda has set a new benchmark for premium design language in this segment and is clearly the looker in this comparison. The Honda Civic looks quirky and grabs some attention as well, while the Forte is the least impressive to look at. Though Mazda 3 is the longest and has the longest wheelbase, it is the Civic that offers the most spacious cabin.
Some of the prominent exterior features of the 2020 Mazda 3 Sedan are:
What other Mazda cars could you go for?
Arguably one of the most important advancements for the year 2020, were made in the field of safety. The 2020 Mazda 3 offers a loaded suite of active safety features, including the i-safety sense package, which earlier was optional but now has been made a standard across all the trims, even for the base model.
But that's not all, to further prove the safety prowess of Mazda 3, the IIHS has awarded the car with its most prestigious ranking to date, i.e the 2020 Top Safety Pick+. This is truly commendable on Mazda's part, and this goes on to instill a sense of confidence in the automaker by the consumers. Some of these features are:
The Honda Civic might be the best but definitely the priciest option of the segment. However, the Civic emerges as the undisputed king of the fuel economy arena, with a combined MPG figure of 36. It is a great driving car and can account for equally good amounts of practicality as well. Although with a much more refined engine in the Mazda backed with the minimalistic yet great-looking interior, our choice would be the 3.
Not only is the Forte far more affordable than the 3, it is also far more fuel-efficient. Though there is no competition for the Kia to come even close to the Mazda 3 in terms of performance and handling. Both also offer an equally spacious cabin but the Forte has a larger trunk capacity. While Kia isn't particularly a looker, it is reliable, has high resale value and with an impressive 10-year warranty, we would pick it over the 3.
Priced at $20,295, the Hyundai Elantra is the most reasonable offering in the class. The ride gets a 2.0L I4 under its hood, which can generate 128 hp along with 156 lb.-ft. of torque, which is the lowest among all its rivals. It also is the only one in terms of looks that gives any competition to Mazda 3. It also matches the driving dynamics of 3 to an extent. the Hyundai also has a great-looking interior packed with enough bells and whistles, so much so that the Mazda falls short in this department to the Elantra.
The 2020 Mazda 3 is an extraordinary deal in the budget vehicle section. Offered in two body styles and four trims with discretionary bundles of creature comforts, Mazda gives a ton of varieties to browse. However, it falls behind in certain regions, for example, cargo volume and fuel efficiency, however, these drawbacks can be overlooked thinking about its benefits. For the price tag of $22,445, the Mazda 3 is value for money in all its sense.
