Overall Rating
The 2020 Mazda CX-30 is based on the familiar SkyActiv that also underpins the Mazda 3. The compact SUV was showcased at 2019 Geneva Motor Show and the U.S arrival is likely to happen early 2020.
The 2020 Mazda CX-30 is an all-new crossover from Mazda which slots in effortlessly between the larger CX-5 and smaller CX-3. With its mid-tier proposition and a starting MSRP of around $20,000, the CX-30 carries all the attributes which its Japanese manufacturer is known for. On its challenging endurance though, the CX-30 clearly has the likes of Honda-HR-V and Jeep Renegade in its sights.
We recommend picking up the mid-tier “Select” trim and hooking it with the optional AWD. For the price, buyers would get all the essential goodies like Dual-Zone air-conditioning alongside Blind-Spot monitoring. The optional AWD only adds up to the fun and flavor of driving a Mazda.

On the trim part, the 2020 Mazda CX-30 is available in four different trim options. The trim level starts from the Base model priced at $21,900 and goes all the way up to $29,600 for the fully-loaded Premium model.
While the Base trim is aptly loaded with features for its asking price, moving above the trim-ladder adds up more and more premium features. Also, all the trims are essentially available as FWD, but you can hook an optional AWD to any of the trims.

On the powertrain front, the 2020 Mazda CX-30 doesn’t have much to offer. The sole powertrain is a 2.5-liter inline-4 motor that comes paired to a 5-speed automatic transmission. This tried and tested engine also serves in the likes of a Mazda CX-5 and Mazda 6 sedan.
For its size and proportions though, the engine does feel refined and smooth with ample amount of power in the mid-range. Initial torque delivery does come up with a bit of small lag, but it gets building up quite linearly. Also, the 6-speed automatic transmission shifts smoothly at certain occasions it does fumble up while downshifts.

Among its heated segment here, things appear favorable for the all-new Mazda here. On the power front, the CX-30 is the most powerful among the lot and it also shows in the way it drives. However, the 9-speed automatic transmission in the Jeep here does feel a bit more refined and disciplined than the Mazda.
Acceleration has never been a forte for cars in the compact-SUV segment but that's where Mazda brings in its unique USP here. While inside the cabin, you won't be able to spot the difference instantly but the 2020 Mazda CX-30 equipped with the AWD can race from 0-60 in just around 8.0-seconds. Pretty impressive for a compact SUV with a naturally-aspirated inline-4 motor.

Among the rivals here, the Mazda CX-30 clearly aces ahead of all. However, the Honda HR-V with its remarkable CVT transmission does try to catch-up with a 0-60 time of just 8.6-seconds.
Probably, ride and handling is what you buy a Mazda for and the 2020 CX-30 doesn’t disappoint at all. The suspension is neither soft nor hard and it glides over potholes with ease. The cabin on the move is relatively mum and the road-vibrations are taken care of pretty well either.
The steering wheel is crisp and precise and lets you know exactly what's happening underneath the wheels. Tight maneuvering comes in with ease and even fast-corners feel very confident to tackle with the CX-30. The available AWD system only adds up to the driving gist with elevated levels of frip and fun.
For secure braking, the 2020 Mazda CX-30 comes loaded with 4-wheel ABS at all four corners. While braking in harder circumstances, the CX-30 feels poised and planted with no signs of fade and nose-dive at all. Even the 60-0 braking comes in under 119 feet which is pretty impressive for its class.

As impressive the CX-30 may be in braking, it's surely not the best v here. While the Honda and Jeep are behind the Mazda, the Nissan Rogue sport surprises with its 115 feet braking distance from 60-0 mph. Thanks to Nissan's larger pair of discs though.
From a compact-SUV, what one would ideally look for is a decent economy. If that's your primary need, the 2020 Mazda CX-30 may disappoint you with its mediocre 28 combined mpg. Well, that could be a reason because of the slightly sluggish transmission of the nimble Mazda here.

Among its rivals here, the Mazda CX-30 may seem to be on par with the likes of Nissan Rogue Sport and even surpass the Jeep here. However, with its efficient CVT transmission, the Honda HR-V leads the pack with its 27 combined mpg.
Even on the interior side of the 2020 Mazda CX-30, things remain a bit-familiar but with a sense of exquisitivity for sure. The front doors open wide but the same cannot be said of the rear doors. However, once you are inside, the CX-30 greets you with a premium and spacious cabin. The design layout is similar to other Mazda’s out there with minimalism at its core and a generous splash of soft-touch materials with an available two-tone color scheme. The dashboard is clean with an infotainment screen atop followed by knobs for various controls.Â
On the seating front, the Base model does get along with cloth upholstery but even that has a softness in it. As you move up the trim-ladder, you unfold a premium leatherette/ leather upholstery which feels smooth and perhaps one of the best in class. The front seats are wide and supportive with good lumbar and under-thigh support. You can also have the front seats with power-adjustable as well as heated functionality. Although the rear bench has a comfortable recline angle, its high positioning and lowered roof-line might be a bit cramped for tall passengers.Â

Among this tightly contested segment here, the Mazda surely seems to offer one of the most stylish, premium and comfortable cabins in its class. However, the same is not true for its overall cabin space. The likes of Nissan Rogue and Honda CR-V offer better space around the front seats whereas the Jeep Renegade is far more generous at both the first and second row of seats.Â
Across its lineup, the 2020 Mazda CX-30 comes with an 8.8-inch infotainment screen that sits proudly above the dashboard. The screen is sharp and crisp and it is placed within for reach and visibility of the driver. The screen comes grouped with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay and is also pretty responsive in its operations.
Even music-lovers out there wouldn’t have much to complaint with the available 12-speaker Bose premium audio which sounds phenomenal. An optional charging pad and inbuilt-Mazda Navigation system should also be handy to most buyers. The only grouse which drivers might feel is the infotainment’s rotary-dial operation which might get tricky at times while driving and surely needs getting used to. Some of the infotainment highlights of the 2020 Mazda CX-30 are listed below for reference.

Interior Features
Cargo Space has to be one of the key practicality factors in today’s heavily competitive SUV world which we live in. In that regard, the 2020 Mazda CX-30 does score a good point with its 20.2 cu-fts of cargo space. The cargo compartment is large enough for sure to pack your weekend shopping carts and the split-folding rear seat adds to the practicality quotient. However, with a slightly higher loading height, packing some of your heavy bags in a CX-30 may not be very easy.Â

Placing value and practicality, all the crossovers in the lot here, do try their best to offer utmost generosity. However, owing to its curvy and sloping design, the Mazda CX-30 happens to be on the lower-end of the battle here. The Nissan Rogue and Honda HR-V offer better cargo space than the CX-30 with their 22.9 and 23.1 cu-fts of space behind the second-row, respectively.
The overall form and shape of the 2020 Mazda CX-30 remains the same as its siblings like the CX-3 and CX-5. You get the same sleek silhouette and front fascias and the CX-30 is instantly remarkable as a Mazda. Though the rear and tail sections are very familiar yet striking, it does get some healthy distinction to make it stand apart.
Try looking up close and you will notice the slightly longer wheelbase on which it sits upon along with the outward-protruding or curvy rear window. The front bumper gets a redesign too and because of its wider front nose than the CX-3, its chrome-grille appears to be wider than most of its siblings. At the rear, an extensive black-cladding is what distinguishes the CX-30.

Among the class here, all the rivals here boast of catchy yet very trendy exterior design languages. Let alone the Jeep Renegade which tries to bring along a healthy blend of timeless Jeep design along with a stint of modern youthful taste. However, when it comes to “trend” and youthful design, the CX-30’s chrome-laden profile is surely an instant eye-grabber.
Exterior features
As we all are familiar with now, Japanese manufacturers including Mazda enjoy quite a good fame when it comes to occupant safety. The 2020 Mazda CX-30 is no exception either. Even the Base Mada CX-30 is equipped with some of the latest and inclusive safety features like 4-wheel ABS, Pre and POst-Collision safety system, Emergency braking assist and Lane-departure warning system. No wonder, the 2020 Mazda CX-30 earned a “5-Star” safety rating from the NHTSA. Some of the highlighted safety features of the 2020 Mazda CX-30 are listed below for reference:
Safety Features
The Nissan Rogue Sport perhaps seems like the closest competitor to the Mazda CX-30 here. Thanks to Nissan's better braking apparatus, more front row space and a leather cargo space as well. However, the Mazda is way ahead than the Rogue in terms of design and presentation, premiumness and comfort and tech and safety suite. Most importantly, the CX-30 is not only the quicker among the two but is also far more engaging to drive.
The Honda HR-V is undoubtedly one of the best-sellers in the segment here and for good reasons. The HR-V has a smooth and efficient transmission, is almost as quick as the Mazda and is also more practical here. However, in terms of road presence, interior comfort and layout, feature suite and ride and handling, the Mazda CX-30 is surely the better among the two.
Among the herd of stylish crossovers here, the Jeep Renegade is the only one which considers its SUV aspirations very very seriously. When compared with the CX-30, the Renegade is almost as powerful, more capable and spacious and has a better transmission than the Mazda. However, in terms of efficiency, premiumness, handling and comfort, the 2020 Mazda CX-30 aces ahead of the Jeep Renegade quite easily.
The all-new 2020 Mazda CX-30 is surely a remarkable presentation in the compact-SUV league. Sitting above the Mazda CX-3, the CX-30 broings in added space and practicality in a gorgeous yet fun-to drive package. It is squicker, comfortable and loaded with all the goodies than one would need in a daily-driver. Even on the power front, it has plenty of power and offers good if not the best efficiency in its class. All of that at a competitive price makes it one of the most well-rounded packages in its class for sure.
