About 2020 Mercedes-Benz G-Class

2.8

Overall Rating

The 2020 Mercedes-Benz G-Class is one of the best cars in the segment and offers not only supreme levels of capabilities but also pioneers in delivering G-Class-leading comfort, luxury, and fit and finish levels inside the cabin.

The 2020 Mercedes-Benz G-Class is one of the best cars in the segment and offers not only supreme levels of capabilities but also pioneers in delivering G-Class-leading comfort, luxury, and fit and finish levels inside the cabin. In addition to this, the G-Class is also available with a powerful powertrain and reliable mechanical parts. The car gets an old school boxy design which gives this SUV a strong road presence. Moreover, the 2020 G Wagon is also known to offer stellar off-road capabilities. The car boasts a powerful engine, a rugged look, and a strong character, which makes it better than most of the rivals.

As there is only a single trim in the G Wagon, we suggest you go for the same as it is geared up with cutting-edge technology and features and a powerful rumbling V8 engine that is sufficient enough to take down some of its rivals with ease. Some of the exceptional features include distance pacing control, remote engine start, memory settings, and THERMOTRONIC automatic dual-zone front air conditioning.

Pricing and Features
7.0/10

While there is only a single trim option on offer, the 2020 Mercedes-Benz G-Class does offer a number of optional upgrades for the buyers. The car gets a number of features and other modern safety features and equipment, which make it a practical family car with bucket loads of technologies. In addition to this, the cabin boasts a spacious cabin and class-leading comfort levels. As standard, it includes features like the Navigation System, steering wheel memory, heated steering wheel, and residual heat recirculation. Some of the important features are listed in the table below.

Some of the exceptional features include distance pacing control, remote engine start, memory settings, and THERMOTRONIC automatic dual-zone front air conditioning.

Engine and Performance
4.8/10

Powering the 2020 Mercedes-Benz G-Class is a 4.0L V8 engine that delivers 416 hp and 450 lb-ft of peak torque. This engine comes mated to a 9-speed G-Tronic automatic gearbox. This engine feels refined and has a strong power output, which gives it impressive performance levels. In addition to this, the gearbox is smooth and seamless with its shifts. The gear ratios of the gearbox complement the power delivery from the engine and offer an effortless driving experience to the drivers. On the driving dynamics front, the G-Class doesn’t have much going its way. It looks like a breadbox and goes without saying, there is not much aerodynamics in the bodywork.

All this said, the steering response is impressive, and the overall feedback from the steering is better than most other rivals. However, the ‘overall’ dynamics are surely not the best, and rivals like the Range Rover are far more superior in terms of overall driving dynamics. The brakes are good and offer decent stopping power to the vehicle. It is capable of hitting 60 mph from a standstill in just 5.8 seconds and can reach a top speed of 155 mph, which are mind-bending numbers for an SUV of its size and stature.

While comparing the competition, the 2020 Mercedes-Benz G-Class may not be the most powerful car in the segment but does offer impressive performance and supreme off-roading capabilities that are capable of giving a hard battle to its competition. The Toyota Land cruiser has the largest engine of the lot, a 5.7L V8 engine. The Land Rover Range Rover cranks out 550 hp, which is the highest in the segment. When it comes to acceleration, Lincoln Navigator takes down its rivals by a considerable margin, with a 0-60 mph time of 5.3 seconds, which is one second faster than some of its rivals. By car standards, it is a year. The Toyota Land cruiser reaches a quarter-mile run in 15.1 seconds, which is the slowest in the segment, while the Mercedes-Benz G Wagon manages to do a 14.3 seconds quarter-mile run. On the other hand, both the G Wagon and Range Rover have a top speed of 155 mph.

Fuel Economy
2.8/10

Hugely proportioned cars with huge engines are not made for delivering impeccable fuel efficiency. If fuel economy is taken into consideration, the 2020 Mercedes-Benz G-Class is not the best in the segment. The car gets a claimed fuel economy of 13 MPG for city usage and 14 MPG for highway usage. The rivals, on the other hand, offer better fuel economy levels than the G Wagon. The G Wagon is more of a performance-oriented SUV, certainly not made for fuel efficiency.

Based on the comparison, we do infer that the 2020 Mercedes-Benz G-Class is not the most fuel-efficient car in the segment. While the performance is great, the G-Class does miss out on some important points in the fuel economy department. The Range Rover finds its position on the top of the table with 16 MPG in the city, 21 MPG on the highway, and 21 MPG when combined. The Lincoln Navigator also performs pretty impressively in spite of having the smallest tank of the bunch. Next in line is the 2020 Toyota Land Cruiser, with its moderate tank size, it is capable of covering 319.8 miles in the city and 418.2 miles on the highway. The Mercedes-Benz G Wagon with its below-average fuel efficiency stays in the last position.
