The 2020 Mercedes-Benz Maybach is similar to its previous model which is based on the W222 platform from the first-generation Maybach. It is available in two engine options that provide high performance along with ultimate comfort to the passengers. It won’t be an understatement if we say that the Maybach glides over the roads it travels on
There are only a handful of rides that provide you with the ultimate comfort that one could possibly wish for their travel needs. While most of them would cost you a fortune, Mercedes-Benz Maybach proves to be an entry point of the ultra-luxury segment. That doesn’t make it any less ostentatious in terms of the design or performance numbers. Starting at a base price of $173,000 the all-new 2020 Mercedes-Benz Maybach Sedan finds itself in competition with the Rolls-Royce Ghost and Bentley Flying Spur.
The Maybach though based on the same platform as its counterpart, the Mercedes-Benz S-Class, comes with a touch of conspicuous hand-crafted interiors along with a powerful engine that makes it a perfect combination of style, comfort, and performance. It is one of those few vehicles where you wish to be in the rear passenger seat rather than behind the wheels. Currently being a part of the first-generation Maybach sedan launched in 2015, we see no changes for the 2020 model. But we expect a generation change with a facelift on the 2021 Mercedes-Maybach expected to launch by the end of 2020.
The 2020 Mercedes-Benz Mayback is available in two variants, the Maybach S560 which is the base variant, and the Maybach S650 which is the more powerful one. The base S560 is available at the starting price of $173,000 while the S650 is much more expensive at a starting price of $203,000. There is not much difference between the two vehicles when it comes to the exterior and interior features of the vehicle where both these variants proved to be highly comfortable with all the standard safety features along with the driver assistance technologies for ease of driving.

The major difference between the two trims is the engine that is housed by these models. The base S560 is equipped with a smaller 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 engine that produces 463 horsepower while the S650 is equipped with a bigger 6.0-liter engine that produces 621 horsepower. The S560 proves to be economical when it comes to the mileage for all the obvious reasons. One of the additional performance features that come with the S650 is the magic body control with curve function that is a camera-based system that scans the road ahead and adjusts the suspension to counteract the forces of the bumps. This improves the ride quality of the Maybach. Whereas the Curve function helps the car lean into the corner just like a motorcycle to reduce the lateral forces on the occupants inside the cabin.
The 2020 Mercedes-Benz Mayback provides great value for your money spent. Being an ultra-luxury sedan, the Maybach is expected to be highly reliable with fewer issues and breakdowns. It stands true to its Maybach tag and provides high reliability at the condition that you maintain it well. This also adds to the cost of ownership which could be taxing on your pocket. But if you can afford this vehicle in the first place, the cost of ownership would be the least of your concerns.
J.D. Power is an organization that conducts surveys with the actual owners of a vehicle and collects feedback. This helps them understand the overall experience of the customer with the vehicle right from the build quality, reliability, driving, and dealership experience. We prefer to opt for their reviews for understanding the reliability factor of the vehicle due to their 100 point scoring system which takes into account the above-mentioned parameters. The 2020 Mercedes-Benz Maybach has received an overall score of 79 out of 100. This proves to be a really great score in this segment with the Maybach scoring 79 out of 100 on the quality and reliability segment along with 81 out of 100 on the driving experience. Thus the 2020 Mercedes-Benz Maybach proves to be a highly reliable vehicle in this segment.

When it comes to the cost of ownership, it changes from state to state due to the difference in the individual state tax and the discount that the dealership offers. In this ultra-luxury segment, there are no major changes in the pricing of the vehicles unless there is a generation change of the model. Thus the cost of ownership remains almost constant over the years. To understand the actual cost of ownership we have to take a look at the cost of insurance, taxes, depreciation maintenance, and repairs to name a few. Thus when we talk about the cost of ownership, it is not just the buying cost of the vehicles but an amalgamation of these additional costs over the years.
If we look at how much it would cost for you to own the 2020 Mercedes-Benz Maybach over the term of 5-years, as per our calculations it would lie anywhere between $200,000 to $220,000. This figure is derived considering the depreciation, maintenance, insurance as well as fuel costs over the period of 5-years. Thus owning the Maybach would cost more than the actual base price of the car.
Mercedes makes sure to help you buy this vehicle without the concerns related to the warranty provided with the vehicle. The 2020 Mercedes-Benz Maybach comes with a compelling package of warranty which covers most of the basic necessities for maintaining this vehicle. It includes the Basic warranty along with the powertrain warranty which is covered for the first 4-years or 50,000 miles whichever comes earlier. It also takes care of roadside assistance along with the emission parts warranty for the first 2-years or 24,000 miles which covers the repairs or replacement of any necessary parts on your Maybach to meet the emission standards.

Roadside Assistance |

You can opt for the extended limited warranty which would increase the years of coverage along with increased miles. Mercedes have provided a much better package than what is available with the Bentley. The only thing missing is the complimentary scheduled maintenance.
Even with its bigger engine, the Mercedes-Benz provides a better value for money when it comes to the miles covered with each dollar spent on the fuel and maintenance costs. If we consider the average distance covered by the Maybach each year to be 12,000 miles and the average cost of fuel to cover these 12,000 miles to be $1,800, then the miles covered per dollar spent would be around 6.6 miles. If you want to find out the dollar spent per mile covered, we simply reverse the division and get 0.15 cents for each mile.
As we saw earlier, the major difference between the two models is the engines that they are equipped with. We would suggest going for the S650 variant with a bigger engine producing higher power. With a price difference of almost $33,000 dollars, the S650 is definitely on the higher side but that money spent bumps us the engine output with nearly 158 horsepower which can be put to good use. Along with that, the S650 comes with few additional features which enhance the experience inside the cabin.
The ultra-luxury segment vehicles quickly lose their value to depreciation in the first few years while still maintaining their quality and reliability if maintained properly. Thus buying a used Mercedes-Benz Maybach would be a good idea considering that the vehicle is in good condition. You would be paying a lot less as compared to the new vehicle which is in the same generation does not offer a whole lot of new features.
The 2020 Mercedes-Benz Maybach is equipped with two different engines for the two different variants available. The S650 is equipped with a 6.0-liter twin-turbo V12 engine that produces a staggering 621 horsepower along with a massive 738 pound-feet of pull.
This engine is mated with a 7-speed automatic transmission that delivers the power to rear wheels. The S560 variant houses a smaller 4.0-liter bi-turbo V8 engine that gives a power output of 463 horsepower along with 516 pound-feet of torque. This engine is mated with a 9-speed automatic transmission which delivers the power to all four wheels. This fully integrated 4matic transmission is controlled electronically which provides smooth gear shifts for a comfortable ride.

The 2020 Mercedes-Benz is not the most powerful vehicle in this segment and the Bentley Flying Spur takes the lead with 5 more horses under the hood. But no other vehicle under consideration can beat the mighty torque figures that the Maybach provides. Even if the Rolls-Royce Ghost houses a bigger 6.6-liter engine it falls short on power with just 563 hp and 605 pound-feet of torque. The Rolls-Royce Ghost costs almost 50-percent more than the Maybach yet proves to be underpowered.
The 2020 Mercedes-Benz Maybach proves to be pretty quick on the road while still maintaining the calm and composed stature to indicate its dominance. With utmost control, the Maybach launches to 60 miles per hour from a standstill in just 4.7-seconds which is pretty impressive. It is not as quick as the Bentley Flying Spur which takes mere 3.5-seconds to reach 60 miles per hour. The Rolls-Royce Ghost takes a similar time as the Maybach to accelerate from 0-60 mph but then proves to be quickly in the latter half with a quarter-mile acceleration of 12.7-seconds. The Bentley Flying Spur is undoubtedly the quickest in the quarter-mile performance as well with just 11.7-seconds. T

The 2020 Mercedes-Benz Maybach tops out at 205 mph which is just 2 mph slower than the Bentley Flying Spur. The Rolls-Royce Ghost tops out way too early at just 155 mph. But again, the Ghost prioritizes comfort over performance any day. The Rolls-Royce Ghost houses the biggest brakes in the segment which provides it with an astonishing stopping power where it decelerates from 60-0 mph in just 107 feet. The Maybach comes nowhere near to the Rolls-Royce in terms of braking performance and takes 163 feet to come to a standstill with its smaller braking disc.
Cars in this segment have three major things that are imbibed in them like Newton's three laws are in a Physics book, namely, luxury, interior space, and comfort. So there is no doubt that the Maybach feels like a magic carpet that just floats over everything like Aladdin would in the famous fable Arabian Nights. Mercedes' secret behind this overly plush and comfortable ride is Mercedes-Benz's adaptive, self-leveling four-wheel multilink with AIRMATIC suspension system. The electronically controlled air springs in the AIRMATIC system adjust to changing driving conditions, multiple times every second, to offer best in class ride and comfort.
It also adjusts according to the number of occupants in the car or the amount of luggage inside the trunk, making it one of the best suspension setups out there. If you happen to get behind the wheel of a Maybach, which is not a bad place, to begin with, the steering requires little inputs and is pretty light at low speeds but also weighs up pretty well as speeds rise. In fact, it is surprising to see the Maybach handle so well with great control over the body roll if you happen to push one in a set of twisties. The land yacht is obviously a little nose heavy and one should not expect to slide through the corners, but the overall handling is pretty impressive for a car this size.
It is obvious that one who is out to shop for a Maybach would not have fuel efficiency in his mind at all, in fact, it would be one of the last things that would pop in their head before buying the car. But it doesn’t mean that Mercedes has overlooked this fact altogether. The Maybach does fairly well in this department as the EPA rates the S650 at 13 mpg in the city and 21 mpg on the highways with the combined fuel efficiency of 16 mpg. The 21.1 gallons of fuel tank might seem large but is adequate to return a range of over 300 miles of combined city and highway driving.

The British engineered cars are no match to the German precision engineering as the Maybach has the best fuel efficiency in this comparison. The Flying Spur has the largest gas tank but the low fuel efficiency of its engine means the Bentley manages to just match the range of the Mercedes. The Rolls-Royce being known for supreme luxury has to make do with high fuel consumption and has the lowest fuel efficiency and needs frequent gas station stops as compared to the other two.
The Marriott hotels, Grand Hyatt, Four Seasons, all of these hotels have one thing in common. None of them can match the supremacy in the sheer attention to detail and the amount of luxury that the Maybach has on the inside of its cabin. The list of standard features would give complex even a luxury yacht and everything is so well planned and engineered that one can just sit and admire the cabin in awe of the people who built it.
It is a known fact that the rich need more legroom than any ordinary civilian, maybe that’s why Mercedes offers the Maybach with an extended wheelbase over the regular S-class. It seats 5 adults royally even on long distances but the rich don’t seem to like a crowd and hence the cabin of the Maybach is best enjoyed with a maximum of four occupants in the car.

All cars in this comparison are large extra-long luxury saloons and hence there is no shortage of space in any of them, but if you were to nitpick, it would be the Rolls-Royce Ghost that would have the best legroom while the Mercedes has the smallest space. On the other hand, the Bentley Flying Spur has the widest set of seats while Mercedes has the maximum amount of headroom inside its cabin. The trunk size is similar on all cars with very little to separate between them. The list of standard and optional accessories would put even the best chain of hotels to shame and here is a glimpse of what you can get with the latest Mercedes Maybach.
When looking for a used car on any website, sometimes we find the owners stating that there are just too many features to be mentioned, and more often than not it would be a Volkswagen or a Toyota. But that’s not the case here, we really are short of words for the exhaustive and literally tiring list of features that Mercedes offers to their esteemed customers. There are basically two types of Maybach owners in this side of the world, one who would listen to Debussy and drink their Moët & Chandon from the optional champagne flutes, or the others who would blast DMX as if its a concert and spray their Hennessy Cognac out the sunroof. And this Mercedes will take good care of both these types of owners.
To start with the dual 12.3-inch displays that dominate the dashboard with customizable displays offer smooth and crisp graphics and are pretty intuitive and can be easily controlled via the Command system with a touchpad controller and gets pretty much everything that you could think of and then some more. Have a look at the features list and you'll know we aren’t kidding or exaggerating.
The average everyday Joe won’t be able to differentiate between the regular S-class and the Maybach at first glance, but one who has an eye for cars will definitely spot the distinctive Maybach grille that features two sets of twelve fine vertical chrome vanes and the extra-long body style. The Maybach grille is flanked by multi-element LED headlights that feature Maybach's signature Stardust effect and also get the triple-band LED daytime running lamps.
The front apron also features chrome inserts along with a panoramic roof with tilt and slide functionality with an option for the Magic Sky Control roof, which lightens and darkens the glass roof at the flip of a switch. Mercedes also offers a wide range of wheel sizes and styles to choose from, to match the style and tastes of the individual. Apart from that, you get an electronic trunk with foot motion detection, as well as hands-free access and an illuminated entry system and soft-close doors on all sides to make the experience top-notch.

Thanks to the extended wheelbase of the Maybach, it is the longest car in this comparison alongside being the widest one here. The Rolls-Royce is a close second but still manages to have a longer wheelbase than the Mercedes, while the Bentley is smallest here in pretty much all the dimensions. One thing that goes somewhat against the Maybach is the low ride height, being an extra-long saloon, it is very easy to scrape the bottom and that is where the British cars excel substantially.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) would never crash test a triple-digit sum car just for the sake of making a crash test report and rating them accordingly. The fact of the matter is, if the ultra-rich can afford to risk their lives in a car that has not been tested by any of these testing agencies, then any other ordinary individual can. Apart from that, the sheer amount of active safety features and driver assistance features that are bundled into this machine, its safety can only be bettered by the Humvee of the US military.
Even the basics of safety are so well covered by Mercedes that it is awe-inspiring. To start with, the Maybach features nine airbags, including a driver's knee airbag, rear side-impact airbags, pelvic/thorax airbags for the driver and front passenger, and side curtain airbags. If you just consider the brakes, the features include adaptive braking technology with standard anti-lock brakes and brake assist, as well as active brake assist with cross-traffic function, congestion emergency braking, and active emergency stop assist. Other fancy features that separate the Maybach from the rest of the ordinary classless cars are listed below.
Rolls-Royce is the pioneer of the uber-luxury segment and has dominated the market for ages. It is the brand that people wish to buy into just for the sheer quality and attention to detail and also the image that comes along with it.
The Maybach on the other hand is more of a practical choice, as it does almost everything that a Rolls can and at almost half the price. So if you are a first-time buyer in this segment, the Maybach would be a smarter choice, else one can never go wrong with a Rolls-Royce.
The Flying Spur has the road presence and dominance that the Maybach lacks. Its long bonnet attracts maximum attention and marks your arrival or departure every time to visit someplace. The Maybach is more of a low-key car that might be mistaken for an S-class by many.
Feature-wise and the utmost luxury is to be considered, they both aren’t too far apart, but their prices are. We would recommend going forward with Mercedes Maybach as it is a lot more practical and has more value in the long run.
When somebody sets their eyes on a car like this, the practicality and common sense go for a toss, and what you are left with is a lot less money in your bank account and a car that will be the crown jewel of your already prized possessions in your garage. We all know, thinking practically, one can make do with an S-class for a lot less amount of money and have kind of similar experience, then why spend those extra thousand of dollars. What those thousands of dollars buy is the status and limelight that nothing else can. Yes, the Maybach is basically a dolled up S-Class, but when you are at the top of the pyramid, status symbols are more important than a few thousand dollar bills.
