Overall Rating
The 2020 Mercedes Benz Sprinter is powered by two different power plants, one is a V6 diesel torque monster and the other one is a small turbocharged inline-four gasoline engine.
The cargo van with a three-pointed star is considered as the OG of the segment by many van enthusiasts. This mighty Mercedes is offered in 21 different iterations in its cargo form and 10 trims of its passenger hauler.

For better all-weather capability, the Sprinter is the only van in its segment to be offered with a four-wheel-drive powertrain.
With such a huge line-up, it all boils down to your budget. That being said, do save your hard-earned cash for Mercedes’s new advanced safety package. A parking assist package which brings a 360 degree camera to the table is a must which will set you back just shy of $800. A premium package which costs $1,250 adds brake assist and lane-keep assist is also available as an option. A drivers convenience package worth $1,250 can be optioned as well which adds blind-spot monitoring into the equation.

Mercedes Sprinter is a well packaged ferry machine. It can haul tonnes of cargo, literally, and is powered with two different engine and transmission configurations. The one we have here is the 1.9L turbocharged inline four engine which is mated to a new 9-speed automatic transmission developed in-house by Mercedes Benz themselves. This engine and transmission configuration was first offered in 2019 in to compete with its biggest competition, the Ford Transit van. The new gasoline engine helped in controlling the cost of this behemoth.

In terms of performance, the engine feels peppy in the way it revs but don’t expect a head-pinning performance. This engine has plenty of power but lacks that meaty torque band which the diesel engine is famous for. Some of that lack of outright pulling power is taken care of by the new transmission which shifts flawlessly and keeps the engine in its sweet spot. Hauling is never a concern for this engine and it feels just adequate for the job, nothing more than that.
The Mercedes Benz Sprinter suddenly feels underpowered and feels like its missing some of the engine. Almost all of its competitors are powered by big V6 gasoline engines and produce more power and more grunt. The Sprinter’s 1.9L four-cylinder unit is dwarfed in front of the GMC Savanna and the Nissan NV 1500S.
The Mercedes Sprinter with a gasoline engine is surely not suited for outright acceleration runs. This beast feels underpowered especially when faced with such situations. Performance might just be better with the V6 diesel under the hood of the three-pointed star van.

Not much can be said about how fast these vans are because as for one, that’s not why people by enormous cargo vans.
Sprinter turns out a fine van for both city and highway. The ride remains calm and composed without any chassis rattles or squeaks and boy roll was brought down to the minimum. The 2020 Sprinter dropped the hydraulic steering for an electrically assisted system. To say it's an improvement would be a shot in the dark, as the wheel is lifeless and deprived of any road communication.

Out on the highway, the cabin feels a bit noisy due to the metal on the inside and also since our Sprinter was running light and it was a wide open space back there. The suspension is a bit on the stiffer side to handle all of the excess weight at the back. But when its rolling light, it bounces around which can get a bit nerve wracking for the driver at high speeds on a bumpy road.
The payload capacity for the 2.0L gasoline engine ranges from 3854 pounds for the smallest 1500 model to 6735 pounds for the 4500 model which is the biggest of the Mercedes Benz vans on offer. The numbers are truly impressive and are surely the best of the segment. The towing capacity, however, gets stuck at just 5000 pounds.

In terms of outright hauling, it's the GMC Savana that rules the segment. Thanks to the traditional ladder-on-frame chassis and a much powerful engine, the 2020 GMC Savana can tow double the capacity of the Mercedes Benz Sprinter.
Mercedes Benz does not provide official EPA ratings for the van as the Environmental Protection Agency don't really test big commercial vehicles weighing more than 8500 pounds. That being said, the 2020 Mercedes Benz Sprinter we tested was powered by a 2.0L turbocharged four-cylinder engine compared to big and bulky V6 motors under the hood of its competitors. On paper, the Mercedes Benz van should be a tad bit more fuel-economical in this comparison.

Although the Sprinter has a smaller fuel-tank capacity, it shouldn't pose a problem out on the road as it is a bit lighter on its feet when compared to the likes of the GMC Savana and the Nissan NV. in addition to that, the downsized engine is assisted by turbocharging which should return more miles to the gallon.
Although this van is sparsely equipped when it comes to interior features and exquisite German-build soft touch panels everywhere, this van is still a Mercedes Benz afterall. The build-quality is absolutely top-notch and it feels like it is screwed tightly and it will last a long time.Â
Inside, it’s not the most exciting place to be. The steering is a three-spoke unit covered in plush-feeling leather. There is no digital display for the driver, proper old-school dials with a central MID display is what you get for your money. The dashboard design is nice and simple, feels tough and long-lasting, which is a good thing. In the middle of the dashboard sits a nice 10.3-inch infotainment touchscreen which houses Mercedes’s latest software, the MBUX which works flawlessly.Â
The seats are big and supportive and there’s no shortage of room to move around. The steering wheel gets adjustment settings along with the seats so landing on your favoured driving position is quite easy.Â

In terms of dimensions, it sits right in the middle of the competition but it still somehow feels more practical and accommodating and that’s down to the way Mercedes designers have made use of the space available to them. In addition to that, the Sprinter makes use of a modern chassis and not the old-school ladder-on-frame chassis design.
For the 2020 model, 2020 Mercedes Benz Sprinter sits inline with the rest of the Mercedes clan in terms of active safety aids. Features like active brake assist and blind-spot monitoring are a part of the package which makes this behemoth a safe place to be in-
The Nissan NV is an old product. It’s been on sale since 2013 and needs a heavy update. The NV packs in a punch motor under the hood but is much heavier than the modern Mercedes van. The chassis is an old ladder-on-frame style, which although is a bit more rugged than a monocoque and cheaper as well. The Mercedes is a bit more expensive but is a well rounded and a well-put-together product overall.
The Ford Transit is an industry favorite. It is cheaper and offers a ton of value for the money. For the 2020 model, Ford continues to offer the same recipe but it might just not be enough to stop the Mercedes Sprinter from sprinting past the Ford. With a new four-cylinder gasoline engine under the hood, Mercedes promises a much cheaper package which can certainly go head to head with the Ford.
Although the Mercedes Benz Sprinter is a new offering in this comparison, the GMC Savana has some trick up its sleeves. It might be an old van but its hauling capacity is almost double than the Mercedes Benz Sprinter as it is powered by a big lump of a V6 gasoline engine which is a torque monster, to say the least. It might lose to the Sprinter in terms of build quality and the safety features but it is good at doing Van stuff.
After nearly 12 years of service, the old Sprinter was put to rest and has been updated with this new one which promises to take back its throne. The new and modern Sprinter houses a new set of engine and transmission combo which is much more refined and efficient than its rivals. In terms of connectivity, it hits the ball right out of the stadium with its new MBUX system. Coupled with that, it has a well defined, new age active safety net which makes sure that the driver and the co-driver and their cargo are safe and sound at all times. It comes in all shapes and sizes and is cheaper than before as well.
