Overall Rating
Fast forward to 2020, and this compact car still adheres to the core ideas. The silhouette of the latest iteration of the Mini Cooper still resembles the original one.he interior is one of the best, if not the best in the segment. However, driving dynamics still remain the USP of this car.
The year was 1957. The Suez canal crisis had sent the fuel prices soaring all across the world. That’s when Sir Leonard Lord of the Morris Company issued his top engineer, Alec Issigonis a seemingly impossible challenge. He was to design a compact car that could fit in 4 adults, was fuel-efficient and affordable. After a lot of R&D, in 1959 the first generation Mini rolled out of the factory and was a runaway success.
We suggest you opt for the new Signature trim as it adds various features like heated front row seats, bigger wheels and LED lamps. These features will enhance the overall experience of this car over the course of time.

2020 sees the addition of the all-new Signature trim to the Mini Cooper lineup. All trims are powered by the same 1.5L Twin-Turbo Inline 3 unit that comes mated to a new 7-speed automated manual gearbox. However, with the top of the line Iconic trim, there is an option for an 8-Speed gearbox.

The standard features list of 2020 Mini Cooper is pretty impressive. However, it does miss out on a few staples such as dual-zone auto climate control, LED headlamps and a few others. Although, as you climb up the trim ladder, a host of new features get added.
Which trim do we recommend?
We suggest you opt for the new Signature trim as it adds various features like heated front row seats, bigger wheels and LED lamps. These features will enhance the overall experience of this car over the course of time.
The sideways mounted engine has been a core characteristic of the Cooper. For the year 2020, it is the same Twin-Turbo Inline 3 unit that powered its last iteration. The 1.5L motor is good for 134 horses and 162 lb-ft of pulling force.
Mated to a 7-Speed automatic gearbox with manual mode, the shifts are quick and efficient. However, if you are an enthusiast, you will miss the manual gearbox of the yesteryears. Yes, the current gearbox has the option for a manual mode, but it is nothing like the slick transmission. In day to day usage, you would have no complaints whatsoever.

The sideways mounted engine makes for excellent handling, especially in the city. The peak torque is also available at just 1250 rpm, much lower than any of its rivals. Thus, overtaking other cars in the city will never be an issue with the Mini Cooper. However, this car is not meant for the highways. You’ll be left asking for more power. If you spend more time on the highway, we suggest you go for the Cooper JCW that has 228 hp.
The Copper is made for comfortable daily driving. Therefore, Mini did not put in a lot of effort in ensuring that the Cooper accelerates like its pricier siblings. However, when compared to its rivals, it does perform well. The Cooper, despite having the least powerful engine, manages to outperform all the competitors. This is large because of its low center of gravity and small stature.

To give you an idea about the acceleration of this car, Sarah, a cheetah residing at the Cincinnati zoo ran 100m in 5.95 seconds with a top speed of 61 mph on 20 June 2012. The Mini Cooper takes almost 2 seconds more to reach the 60 mph mark from naught.
The Mini Cooper comes to halt from 60 mph within 111 ft. The figure is not very impressive for a car of this size. However, the Mini has an ace up its hole when it comes to driving around the corners. The Mini uses a Dynamic Stability Control (DSC). This system monitors steering input and acceleration to determine the direction you want to go to. In the case your Mini starts to stray, then the system applies correct brake pressure to individual brakes and adjusts engine torque to maintain the correct line.

Talking about the braking setup, the 2020 Mini Cooper ships with ventilated disc brakes on all four wheels assisted by ABS. The front wheels get 11.6-inch rotors while the rear ones have to do with 10.2 inchers.
Moving on to the handling of the 2020 Cooper 2 door, it’s just like all other Mini cars. Owing to its smaller stance and side-mounted engine, this car delivers an athletic and engaging drive. The engine is mounted as low as possible and the floor is close to the ground. Thus, the Cooper keeps itself planted on the ground, even when cornering at high speeds. The tweaked suspension and anti-roll bars help attack corners with more speed and confidence.
The steering feedback is also one of the best in the segment. The car drives exactly the way you want it too. However, the athleticism comes at the cost of the ride quality. The suspension cannot put out bumps as well as some other cars in the segment. But then again, it’s a Mini.
Fuel economy is not the strongest suit of the Mini Cooper, for that matter, none of the Mini cars. The exhilarating driving dynamics takes its toll on efficiency. As they say “ you win some, you lose some”.

Fuel economy of the 2020 Cooper is not that bad as we might have led you to believe though. Yes, it falls behind its competitors, yet it delivers 28 mpg in the city and 36 mpg on the highway. This is just marginally lower than the Corolla hatch.
The interiors of the Mini Cooper is one of the best in the segment. Period. It is much more upscale and stylish than any of its class rivals. A leather-wrapped steering wheel and heated front seats come standard on the Mini Cooper, and a leather interior is optional. Soft-touch surfaces, rubberized knobs, quality of door seal that locks solidly and clicking of the switches, all of these reflect on the attention paid to small details and make you admire the car even more.

Mini Cooper can comfortably accommodate up to 4 passengers. Talking about the space on offer, the rear space is a little cramped, especially for adults. However, front-seat occupants will have no such complaints. The seats are extremely comfortable and supportive. It even offers dedicated thigh support, which is generally unseen in the segment. Cooper takes the concept of customization to the next level. You will be able to customize the upholstery, front-seat type, the interior surface and interior accent color.
The circular illuminated infotainment screen is unlike any screen found on other cars. The 6.5-inch screen is crisp and bright. The display can be accessed with the help of a knob although the screen is touch-enabled. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are also standard from the current model year.
Upgrading to the premium package will get you an 8.8-inch screen with Harman Kardon audio system and Sirius XM radio.
Being a compact hatch, the cargo space of the Mini Cooper is very limited. With just 8.7 cubic feet, it falls well behind the rivals. If you opt to go with the convertible Cooper. The cargo further goes down as it has to accommodate the sliding roof.

The 2020 Mini Cooper carries on the retro charm Minis are known for. You can either love it or hate it, but never ignore it. Whether parked on the roadside or cruising through a street, the Mini Cooper is sure to turn heads. Round LED headlamps with the signature Mini grille makes the front fascia.

The side profile remains ever so similar to the original Mini. Every inch of the car is used to maximize utility. There are no body lines to accentuate its aggressive look. On the contrary, it’s minimal and simplistic. The Union Jack styled LED taillamps reflects on its British heritage. Talking about Britishness, a quick fact, the Mini was voted the most British car brand ever according to a 2012 Autocar poll, ahead of giants such as Aston Martin, Jaguar, and McLaren.
The Mini has quite a few distinctive styling elements on its exterior shell. Some of them are
The Mini Cooper 2 door comes with an Ultra-Rigid Body which reduces body torque and provides super-tight handling. The Mini is loaded with 8 airbags that adjust their inflation rate by monitoring the severity of the impact. Features like Active Brakes, mitigate the severity of crashes. In wet conditions, when wipers are on, this system dries the brakes to provide an optimum braking response.
Some of the available safety features are mentioned below:
2020 Mini Cooper has not been rated by the NHTSA. However, in the IIHS crash tests, it received a good rating in most of the categories barring two, which are headlamps and ease of LATCH use.
The Civic hatch is one of the best cars in the segment. It is elegant, practical and extremely efficient. You also get the reliability of Honda. However, it does not have the charm and road presence of the Mini. The handling of the Mini Cooper also earns it some extra points over the Civic. Thus, if you want a car for composed daily driving, Civic is your car. If you want a car for enthusiastic daily driving, Cooper is the car for you.
Dubbed as the ‘new’ people’s car, the Golf is an excellent overall car. It is stylish, decently powerful and spacious. The fuel economy is also good. It also handles better than the Civic or the Corolla, but not quite like the Mini. Thus, jot down your priorities and choose a car among the two, as both of them are excellent cars in their own right.
The story here is quite similar to the one with the Civic hatch. With the Corolla, you get a practical and dependable hatch. Mini Cooper is more of a statement car than a practical car. However, the Mini can be a great daily driver, given you do not have a growing family!
You know what to expect from a Mini. Distinctive styling, premium interiors, comfortable seats and exhilarating performance, the 2020 Mini Cooper 2 door has got it all. However, the rear seats are little cramped and the cargo space is extremely small. Barring these, the Mini Cooper is one of the best cars in the segment. Thus, if you can do without the aforementioned drawbacks, the Mini Cooper will make you an extremely happy and satisfied driver.
