About 2020 Nissan NV Passenger

3.7

Overall Rating

The Nissan NV Passenger gets the same choice of powertrain, transmission and drivetrain options. Its less costly variants get a 4.0-liter V6 under its hood which is coupled with a smooth-shifting 5-speed automatic transmission.

Nissan came up with their NV Cargo for taking care of all your needs of hauling cargo. In order to carry passengers there’s the Nissan NV Passenger. Not there are a lot of differences between them just that the NV Passenger can seat up to 12 people. All else remains pretty much the same.

The SL trim of the Nissan NV Passenger is the variant to opt for. For about $6,000 over the price of the base S, the SL adds a lot more features that are definitely worth having. Otherwise, the Nissan NV is a very basic looking van but the SL trim makes significant upgrades to its appearance as well as capability.

2020 Nissan NV Passenger Review

Pros

  • All trims are well fitted with features
  • Multiple mechanical options
  • Decent practicality
  • Smart pricing

Cons

  • Variants lack AWD unit
  • Lackluster exterior and interior

The Nissan NV Passenger gets the same choice of powertrain, transmission and drivetrain options. Its less costly variants get a 4.0-liter V6 under its hood which is coupled with a smooth-shifting 5-speed automatic transmission.

Overview

Nissan came up with their NV Cargo for taking care of all your needs of hauling cargo. In order to carry passengers there’s the Nissan NV Passenger. Not there are a lot of differences between them just that the NV Passenger can seat up to 12 people. All else remains pretty much the same.

Pricing and Features
6.0/10

The Nissan NV Passenger 3500 HD for the year 2020 is available in three different variants. At the base of the lineup lies the S variant which is followed by the mid-level SV. Both trims get a 4.0-liter V6 and five-speed automatic gearbox as standard besides other features like 12-passenger seating and 8 airbags.

The top-tier SL variant on the other hand is equipped with a 5.6-liter V6 and gets a seven-speed automatic unit. This variant also includes premium features like beige leather-trimmed seats and dual-zone air conditioning up front. A rear-wheel drivetrain is common on all variants as a stand-alone choice.

Engine and Performance
9.0/10

The Nissan NV passenger is quite a versatile van. It lets you choose from two different engine and transmission choices. On the base S and mediocre SV variant a 4.0-liter V6 powers the rear wheels with the help of a five-speed automatic transmission. This V6 is capable of giving away 261 hp and 281 lb.-ft. torque.

While all that output is enough to make this Nissan van plenty able, a 5.6-liter V8 makes the SL trim of the Nissan NV Passenger uber competent. A seven-speed automatic gearbox complements this bigger, more powerful V8. However, power from that V8 is also sent only to the rear wheels of this Nissan.

Even with the base 4.0-liter V6 the Nissan NV Passenger manages to do well in this lineup of passenger vans. When paired with the other 5.6-liter V8 it simply outshines the rest. Nonetheless, all vans in this segment put out impressive figures on paper.

How fast is the Nissan NV Passenger?

The Nissan NV Passenger’s 4.0-liter V6 makes the exact same amount of power and torque as that of the Nissan NV Cargo. Only the NV Passenger gets 10 extra seats than the NV Cargo. So the already sluggish V6 seems even less entertaining on this Nissan van.

For enhanced enthusiasm then, it is best advised to opt for the 5.6-liter V8. It pushes out 375 hp and 387 lb.-ft. torque which makes for a significant improvement in the Nissan NV Passenger’s acceleration.

But at over 6700 pounds the Nissan NV Passenger is heavier than some of the full-size pickups. Also there’s hardly any aerodynamic enhancement. So it is highly recommended that anyone driving this van respects its sheer size and weight.

What about the braking performance of the Nissan NV Passenger?

The Nissan NV Passenger is a big van and also quite heavy. So braking abruptly can cause discomfort. Hence, all four corners of the 2020 Nissan NV Passenger have been fitted with high capacity vented disc brakes.

They also feature anti-lock and electronic brake-force distribution function for a more controlled feedback. These features make those emergency braking scenarios seem like a comparatively easier task.

No other passenger van in this segment is quite as bulky as the Nissan NV Passenger. Accordingly, its brakes are also the biggest in this segment. Other vans get more or similarly sized brakes but none are quite as small as the brakes on the Ram Promaster Window van.

What about its driving dynamics?

The only time the Nissan NV Passenger will excite is when you will try to figure out if the wheels are pointing in the direction you want them to. Oh, sorry. Did someone say excite you? What they actually meant was scare you. But the feelings are similar, aren’t they? Probably not for everyone.

Its steering isn’t adequately weighted for such a big vehicle. They meagerly communicate what the wheels up front are doing. Furthermore, the overall squared design leaves no room for agility. A wide, unwinding road is this Nissan NV’s only natural habitat. Anything more or less and the NV Passenger’s ride quality takes a hit.

Fuel Economy
6.0/10

Commercial vehicles like the Nissan NV Passenger don’t get tested by authorities for their MPG ratings. So any factual information about the NIssan NV Passenger’s MPG ratings isn’t actually available. What is known though from real world experiences is that this Nissan van is most efficient when paired to the V6 as the V8 makes more power so it also drinks relatively more.

None of the vans in this segment have been rated by the EPA for their MPG figures. What is known though is the size of their fuel tanks. That way, the Nissan NV Passenger manges to offer above average practicality for its class.

Interior
9.0/10

The Nissan NV Passenger carries over the same purpose-built cabin of the Nissan NV Cargo and adds 10 extra seats to it. While the base trim features price-appropriate equipment, the SV and SL variants further elevate usability. There are hardly any changes other than that. Its dash is just as driver-centric and as logically designed as that of the NV Cargo.

Even the use of hard-plastics throughout the cabin remains unchanged. The seats are cloth fabric-trimmed on the S and mid-level SV variants. The top-trim SL model enhances overall feel by wrapping them in beige leather trim. All variants, however, feature heating and cooling vents for each row besides as many as 324 seating configurations.

Other features include air conditioning and manual or power-adjustable seats depending on the choice of variant. In all, the Nissan NV Passenger is quite aptly equipped with features to ensure sufficient comfort for carrying passengers. It is not as high on space as its competitors though. This results from the fact that it is not as big as the rest in comparison. So for its dimensions it offers decent roominess.

Does it come loaded with tech inside?

As a utility van that is built for the purpose of carrying passengers, the NV Passenger has been strategically loaded with infotainment features. It gets a seven-inch touchscreen as standard and includes steering-wheel mounted controls for further ease of access. That infotainment unit includes features like:

  • Nissan navigation system
  • NissanConnect Mobile Apps
  • Nissan voice recognition
  • SiriusXM traffic and travel link
  • Hands-free text message assistant
  • Bluetooth
  • AM/FM

What about utility?

The cabin of the Nissan NV Passenger is quite versatile. It comes strapped with 12 seats from the factory which can be flipped to maximize utility. As standard the Nissan NV Passenger frees up enough space behind the three of row seats to comfortably carry necessities. Dump all the seats and this NV Passenger offers 218.9 cubic feet of space.

In comparison to the Ram Promaster’s cabin that isn’t enough but is well above average overall. The Ram Promaster comes only with two seats as standard and offers 463.0 cubic feet of cargo space which can be modified according to use.

Creature comforts on offer in the Nissan NV Passenger

All seats on the 2020 Nissan NV Passenger feature 324 seating configurations for added levels of personalization. Other than that, the cabin includes comfort features like:

  • Multi-functional trip computer
  • Dual-zone front air conditioning
  • 12 rear passenger heating and cooling vents
  • Power windows with driver’s onte-touch auto-down
  • Tilt steering column
  • Three 12-volt DC power outlets
  • Two 120-volt DC power outlets
  • Dual sun visors w/storage clips
  • Dual overhead front passenger map lights
  • six/eight cup holders
  • 8-way power adjustable driver’s seat
  • 4-way manual front passenger seat
  • USB port
  • 4/6 speaker system

Exterior
7.0/10

It is not just the NV Passenger’s cabin that bears resemblance to the NV Cargo but its exterior is also exactly the same. So basically it is just as functional and lacks form. On the base variants the grille is made up of black plastic and the rest of the boxy design is underscored by split rear cargo doors and sliding passenger-side door.

Moving up the trim-ladder covers the grille and front and rear bumpers in chrome. This makes the NV Passenger look a bit more appealing than it does in its simplest avatar. At the same time, dual power side mirrors, also in chrome, besides improving practicality also elevate premiumness.

All other vans are about as equally boxy as the NV Passenger but they pay a little better attention to detail. The NV Passenger is the least attractive of the lot. It is big on built but not so much on styling.

What are those eye catching features?

The not-so-alluring exterior features of the Nissan NV Passenger that make it resemble the Nissan NV Cargo are:

  • Halogen headlights
  • DRLS
  • Chrome grille and door handles
  • Chrome outside mirrors
  • UV-reducing front windshield glass

Safety
8.0/10

Like the NV Cargo, the NV Passenger too has not been tested by authorities for its safety ratings. Nonetheless, the NV Passenger has been fortified with safety features to ensure safety of passengers. They include:

  • Eight airbags
  • 3-point ALR/ELR passenger seat belt
  • LATCH
  • Zone body construction w/crumple zones
  • Energy-absorbing steering column
  • Tire pressure monitor

Competition
6.0/10

Nissan NV Passenger vs. Ford Transit Passenger Van

Not that the NV Passenger isn’t a logical choice but clearly not over the Ford Transit Passenger Van. Yes, the latter is the more expensive of the two but for that price the Ford Transit Van offers significant upgrades. It looks better, can seat more people and is also more practical. Not only does it manage to do things the NV Passenger can but also does them better.

Nissan NV Passenger vs. Ram Promaster

The Ram Promaster is not exactly made for hauling passengers but the NV Passenger is purpose-built for it. That way the Nissan NV Passenger is more practical as you’d have to get aftermarket seats installed on the Promaster which can be hectic. But the Promaster is more accommodating which adds to its value.

Final Verdict
7.5/10

The Nissan NV Passenger does what a passenger van should do. It has seats that are comfortable and accommodating and a cabin that favors the driver. That way this Nissan fulfils its purpose. Also it offers enough variety for the price it charges. But the other vans in this segment pay a lot more attention to the little details that make them a more attractive proposition.
