The 2020 Subaru Forester comes in five different trims - Base, Premium, Sport, Limited, and Touring. The 2020 Forester receives minor upgrades like a standard adaptive cruise control system for all the trims along with lane centering, LED license plate illuminator, tire pressure monitoring system, rear-seat reminder alert system, and All-Weather package with the Premium trim. However, the car doesn't get any mechanical changes in comparison to the 2019 Forester.

Along with the standard list of features, the 2020 Subaru Forester also gets a decent list of optional features and packages. The Base trim gets an Alloy wheel package, which offers the same 17-inch wheels that is offered with the higher trims. The 2020 Subaru Forester comes with a 2.5L naturally aspirated flat-four motor producing 182 hp at 5,800 RPM and 176 lb-ft of torque at 4,400 RPM. This motor feels quite lethargic due to its poor low-end performance on offer. The mid-range performance is also nothing remarkable and hence merging the freeway and overtaking fast-moving traffic will not be very easy.

The 2020 Subaru forester comes with the same Lineartronic CVT transmission and is mated to the full-time AWD system for all five trims. As a result, the 2020 Forester is capable of towing 1,500 lbs. This CVT automatic transmission gets many features like 7-speed manual shift mode, hill descent control, and X-Mode dual-mode system. Paddle shifters are also on offer with all the trims.

The 2.5L naturally aspirated flat-four motor under the hood of the 2020 Subaru Forester propels it from 0-60 MPH in 8.5 seconds. It also manages to do the quarter-mile run in 16.7 seconds. When pitched against the competition, the 2020 Forester clearly overpowers the segment as far as 0-60 MPH is concerned. The 2020 CR-V comes close with a 0-60 MPH time of 8.8 seconds, followed by the 2020 Rogue with 8.9 seconds. The 2020 Volkswagen Tiguan comes to the last position with 9.4 seconds of 0-60 MPH time.

Though the 2020 Subaru Forester turned out to be the fastest accelerating car, the motor on offer is not as refined and punchy as that of the 2020 Honda CR-V. However, the 2020 Forester came out with impressive handling, ride quality, and braking performance, making it more fun to drive and dynamically superior to the competitors. The 2020 Forester did a 60-0 MPH braking test in 118 feet, which is one of the highest in the segment.

The 2020 Subaru Forester offers a gas mileage of 26 MPG within the city limits. Take it out on the highway and this figure will escalate to 33 MPG, equating to a combined mileage of 29 MPG. In comparison to the rivals of the compact crossover SUV segment, this combined gas mileage of 29 MPG is one of the best.

Since the 2020 Forester comes with a single engine and gearbox combination, it returns the same 432 miles of tank range inside the city and 548 miles of tank range on the freeways. A combined range of 481 miles is also class-leading. However, a major reason for the impeccable fuel efficiency on offer is the 16.6-gallon fuel tank and the low curb weight of 3,449 lbs.

In comparison, the 2020 Tiguan emerges out to be the least fuel-efficient contender here, despite having the smallest engine in the segment. The 2020 Honda CR-V grabs the first position in terms of gas mileage on offer, returning a respectable 30 MPG combined. Both the 2020 Nissan Rogue and the 2020 Subaru Forester gave out an identical 29 MPG of combined gas mileage.

The 2020 Subaru Forester series comes with caramel and black-colored interior for all the trims. The seats of the 2020 Forester come wrapped in leather on the top of the line Limited and Touring trims while the lower Base, Premium, and Sport trims feature premium cloth upholstery. Along with that, the 2020 Forester also gets many other standard features like a panoramic sunroof, electrically adjustable front seats, Harmon Kardon audio system, dual-zone automatic climate control air conditioning system, and many more as standard. However, the Base trim misses out on some of these features.

The 2020 Subaru Forester offers the best in class headroom, legroom, and shoulder room for the rear seat passengers. Even the front seat space is impressive for the 2020 Forester and is second to none. The 2020 Honda CR-V comes to a close second position, followed by the 2020 Nissan Rogue. However, the 2020 Tiguan gave a lower front and middle row space since it is the only offering with a third row. The cargo capacity of 35.4 cubic feet present in the 2020 Forester is quite decent too. However, both the 2020 Nissan Rogue and the 2020 Honda CR-V offers a better space of 39.3 cubic feet and 39.2 cubic feet, respectively.

The lower three trims of the 2020 Subaru Forester come with a 6.5-inch touchscreen unit that is mated to a 6-speaker setup. However, the Base trim offers only a 4-speaker audio system. The Limited trim features an 8.0-inch touchscreen multimedia display that is vivid and fluid in nature. The interface is user-friendly and intuitive. The Sport trim can also be upgraded with this system for some extra money. The top of the line Touring trim also features the same unit. However, it is equipped with complimentary navigation services. It comes mated to a more premium 9-speaker audio setup from Harman Kardon which gave out an excellent audio experience.

Last refreshed in 2019 and carried over exactly to 2020, the Subaru Forester has let go of its curvy and sleek appearance altogether and is now accentuated with bold creases especially around the headlamps that impart an “eye-brow” effect to them. Even then, the 2020 Subaru Forester retains all the exterior features of the outgoing 2019 Forester like the LED headlights with integrated LED DRL, 17-inch alloy wheels for all the trims except the Base trim, All-Weather package including heated exterior mirrors and windshield de-icer, and chrome accents on the front and side silhouette, giving it an upmarket appeal.

The 2020 Forester is not the best in terms of dimensions here. It just barely manages to defeat the 2020 Honda CR-V in terms of wheelbase and is overpowered by the 2020 Nissan Rogue and the 2020 Volkswagen Tiguan offering 106.5-inch and 109.8-inch, respectively.
