Overall Rating
In 2020, the most valuable automaker of the U.S. is giving a full-electric SUV crossover to the world, with the Tesla Model Y. The car was already unveiled in March 2019 and is slated to go on floors this year with sales starting in late March 2020.
Imagine yourself in the year 2050, when the cars will not be gasoline but electric. An age of technical advancement when cars will not just be good for the environment but also add value to it. Based on that idea, the so-called “king of the Millenials”, Elon Musk is taking charge in the electric mobility space, with his brainchild, Tesla Motors.
The 2020 Tesla Model Y is quite a complete vehicle in itself and is being offered at an acceptable price. We would recommend picking up the Long Range trim with 20-inch wheels in Midnight Metallic Silver color and the Black and White interior color combination which will add a total of $5,000 to the price tag. Although it comes with many features of autopilot, it is not fully autonomous and requires driver’s supervision. For a fully autonomous experience, you can add the Full Self Driving Computer for $7,000.

The 2020 Tesla Model Y is the latest in the lineup of the electric mobility company’s cars. The car is offered in 3 trims, base, long-range and performance. While the standard range trim is currently not on offer, the Long-Range and Performance trim are the ones you get to choose from.
The range remains more or less the same in all trims, at 315 miles, it is the power of the car that changes as per your choice.

Our Recommendation
The 2020 Tesla Model Y is quite a complete vehicle in itself and is being offered at an acceptable price. We would recommend picking up the Long Range trim with 20-inch wheels in Midnight Metallic Silver color and the Black and White interior color combination which will add a total of $5,000 to the price tag. Although it comes with many features of autopilot, it is not fully autonomous and requires driver’s supervision. For a fully autonomous experience, you can add the Full Self Driving Computer for $7,000.
The 2020 Model Y is available in a rear-wheel driven motor setup or an “all-wheel-drive” setup where it has separate motors for the front and the rear. This independent front-rear setup ensures that, under any circumstances, the car can be driven by the user.

Since the car is a remodel of the Tesla Model 3 Platform, It would not be wrong to call it a Model 3 in an SUV silhouette, as the driving dynamics are remarkably similar. The car is agile and nimble and also packs the punch to thrill you as well. The independent motors have the provision to electronically control the torque output to the wheels.
Handling, stability and traction control are also improved due to independent torque delivery, which adds to the experience of driving the electric crossover.
Considering it is powered by independent motors for the front and the rear, you get almost and instant delivery of power from the time you step on the pedal. Once you get used to such a high amount of power that can be accessed with just the press of a pedal, driving a gas-powered vehicle will never be the same.
Tesla cars are also one of the fastest cars in the world with the 2020 Tesla Roadster claiming a 0-60 time of 1.9s. To put it into perspective, if you blink, you might just miss the Roadster.

Even with the extra power and torque, the 2020 Jaguar I-Pace is just marginally faster than the Model Y. This goes on to show how optimized the 2020 Model Y is. The Tesla has a very low center of gravity as compared to the Jag and that allows it to excel to such high speeds at ease.
Although with the Performance upgrade, the car can easily sprint from a stop to 60mph in 3.5 secs. So it depends on your preference which do you want to opt for.
Tesla has equipped the Model Y with 19-inch wheels with corresponding all-season tires. This can also be upgraded to 20-inch wheels in the Long Range trim. Although if you opt for the Performance Trim with the performance upgrade, you will get 21-inch Überturbine Wheels.

By default, disc brakes are standard on the Model Y with the Performance trim getting Performance Brakes as part of the package. Brake assist, ABS with EBD and emergency braking are standard with the Model Y.
To put it into perspective, the old Tesla Model 3 stopped within 133 feet, so the Model Y will definitely improve upon this performance.
Based on the Tesla Model 3, the Model Y is the ghost of the sedan in an SUV Crossover body. The driving dynamics are quite similar and the car can certainly hold its own as its other brothers. The battery pack is floor mounted in the typical Tesla fashion. Since its an electric, there is no noise of the engine and this leads to clearly audible sounds of the road irregularities.
Quick and nimble is the name of the game when it comes to electric vehicles and Tesla is certainly no stranger to this methodology. A strong love for the road with an intuitive steering wheel that is also highly responsive, the Model Y is superbly vibrant. Equipped with different steering modes to suit your comfort, the car carries itself with remarkable elegance in all corners.
Snow, rain, and mud are no challenge either as the car comes fully equipped with all-season tires and motors with season change resistance. So, if you have your mind on the Model Y, expect it to change your mind about driving vehicles forever.
As opposed to gasoline cars, electric cars are not about fuel economy but rather about the mileage range it can offer from a full charge. The Model Y claims an EPA range of 315 miles in the Long Range trim and 280 miles in the Performance Trim with performance upgrade.

Tesla has a full-blown Supercharger network in place in over 14,000 locations across the world. And also, these can be charged at general charging stations. The car also comes with the capability to charge for 15mins at a Supercharger station and offer a range of 158 miles.
While the Model Y battery pack capacity is not confirmed yet, it is touted to be a 75kWh battery pack. The Tesla Model 3 also had not lived up to its claimed mileage, so we hope the Model Y range will not be the same story either.
Tesla cars are luxury vehicles. And the Model Y is also part of the same breed. It is an electric luxury crossover SUV, and the interiors emulate that feeling especially. The car comes with a full glass roof that offers an almost panoramic view. It is also tinted heavily so that the people inside remain comfortable on sunny days.
To make sure that the driver also has great visibility, the dashboard is mounted lower and the seats are also raised. The eyeline remains unobstructed and makes sure that the driver can comfortably drive under all conditions.

The interiors also remind of the Model 3, which seems more and more like its soul cousin having shared so much of its essence in the Model Y. Tesla’s floor is immensely flat and grants it a spacious appearance since it also functions as a protective casing for the lithium battery pack mounted in the floor.
The interior is simplistic yet stylishly elegant. No gimmicky buttons are present with the 15-inch infotainment system taking center stage in controlling all in-vehicular functions. The clean luxurious look is something that a lot of brands can take from Tesla.
The other features it comes equipped with are:
The seating is provided for 5 people by default but can be converted to a 7 seater setup with third-row seats for an extra $3,000. And if you opt for that, then expect delivery of your car in 2021. The second-row seats are fully floor-folding in standard configuration, but it can also be converted to independently folding with a different interior color combination of Black and White. Besides that, there is only a change in the ambiance of the vehicle. The change will cost you $1,000.
Tesla’s infotainment systems are responsible for controlling all in-vehicular functions. The screen has been placed elegantly in the middle of the dash but still in the comfortable reach of the driver. If the system is going to be similar to the Tesla Model 3, then expect Netflix, Hulu, and YouTube embedded in the system itself.
Othe features that are stated to be in the infotainment setup are:
The car also is partly autonomous like other Tesla cars but needs driver supervision during normal conditions. For the full autopilot autonomous driving experience, you will need to opt for the Full Auto Driving Computer for $7,000. The features that it will add are:
Additional functionality that is expected to arrive later this year are:
So, with the 2020 Tesla Model Y, you won’t have to worry about having been left behind technology-wise as it will keep receiving updates OTA and add additional functionality to the already robust system.
The Model Y has an easy access trunk which is quite low and gives you the ease of loading and unloading stuff from the cargo. Since there are no buttons in the central console, there is ample storage space with 4 USB ports, and docking for 2 smartphones.

Cupholders in the center console and bottle holders in the door pockets are also quite usable. Door pockets also have ample space to carry daily travel supplies. If this is not enough, the Model Y has fully-flat folding rear seats in the rear that can increase the storage space to 66 cubic feet capacity.
In the Black and White interior trim, the rear seats are also independently foldable so you can fold either only if you need it.
When it comes to looks, the ghost of the Tesla Model 3 is just looming around the corner to come out and surprise you. The Model Y carries heavily from Model 3 and it is pretty evident when viewed from the front. The car rides higher than the Model 3 but is still quite low. The design is quite fluidic and aerodynamic that gives the car a feel that it will just glide through.
The door handles are quite sleek and become almost unnoticeable when viewed from the front or in three-quarters view. Headlamps seem like a cheaper version of an Aston Martin and are reminiscent of the Model 3 design yet again.
If there is any car that we could point to, in terms of the bodylines, that would be the BMW GT series vehicles which have a higher stance but a more crossover style roof. In the SUV silhouette, the Model Y looks cute rather than dominating and aggressive.

The car rides on 19-inch wheels as standard which can be bumped up to 20-inch wheels. There is only a single wheel design available for both. The wheels have the Tesla logo in the wheel hub cap and are accompanied by the corresponding tire size depending on the size you choose. If you do choose the Performance trim with the performance upgrade, the wheels will not be standard 19-inch but rather the 21-inch Überturbine Wheels, which also feature in just a single design.
Tesla cars are one of the safest cars out there thanks to their special adherence to safety norms. The Model 3, Model S and Model X have all received perfect ratings almost every time from the IIHS and NHTSA. So, we would expect the Model Y to carry forward this legacy. Besides that, the car comes equipped with the following features:
Though the car has autopilot included, it needs to be supervised. The capability can be increased to full autonomous mode with the full Self Drive Capability. That will add the following safety features:
Additional functionality that is expected to arrive later via OTA updates are:
At the price it is being offered, the Tesla Model Y is certainly equipped to keep you safe under all conditions.
When it comes to making luxury vehicles, Jaguar certainly knows its art. The 2020 Jaguar I-Pace was one of the pioneers of the segment by being a luxury electric crossover and has withstood many tests of time. More powerful, tried and tested and still very nascent, the I-Pace has grabbed many awards. But all of that comes at a much more premium price as compared to the Tesla since the top of the line Model Y still costs less than the base variant of the I-Pace. So if you want something that can be easy on your pocket and be practical as well, then the Model Y is the one to opt for.
Luxurious, Simplistic, Sleek and electric are the terms that pop to mind when the 2020 Tesla Model Y takes the stage. The car is equipped with all of the features that you would ever need from it and adds a layer of safety over that. With being a pioneer like Elon Musk at the helm, Tesla is going strong and achieving great things. So, if electric mobility has piqued your interest, and you want a car that is future proof technology-wise, the Model Y with its elongated warranty of 8 years makes a very strong case for itself.
