About 2020 Toyota GR Supra

3.7

Overall Rating

Toyota has finally unveiled its new Supra, and anyone who is even a little enthusiastic about cars has an opinion.

Toyota has finally given us the much-awaited and needed next-generation Supra. After 22 long years of wait, we have with us, Toyota’s flagship performance sports coupe. The 2020 Toyota GR Supra is the cumulative effort of two dominant automakers-Toyota and BMW. The FT-1 concept has been a major part of this development where FT stands for Future Toyota. Most of the design cues of this concept were carried forward into the production car.

We would vouch for the mid Premium trim as it will add a host of features for a small bump in price. It would also be the go-to trim for many as the top Launch Edition trim would be sold out soon. The small price bump gives you a larger 8.8-inch display coupled to a 12-speaker JBL setup. It has Apple CarPlay support and even gets a head-up display. Heated leather seats keep you comfortable and warm while you hoon the Supra.

Toyota has finally unveiled its new Supra, and anyone who is even a little enthusiastic about cars has an opinion.

Overview

Toyota has finally given us the much-awaited and needed next-generation Supra. After 22 long years of wait, we have with us, Toyota’s flagship performance sports coupe. The 2020 Toyota GR Supra is the cumulative effort of two dominant automakers-Toyota and BMW. The FT-1 concept has been a major part of this development where FT stands for Future Toyota. Most of the design cues of this concept were carried forward into the production car.

Pricing and Features
8.0/10

Toyota offers the 2020 GR Supra in three vibrant trims which are high on features. All trims are powered by the same 3.0L turbocharged inline-six engine sourced from BMW. It produces a potent 335 horses and 365-pound feet of torque. The power is transferred to the rear wheels via an 8-Speed Automatic transmission.

Toyota has not been choosy with the features on the trims. All trims get top-notch safety features with a host of driver-assist features. The last two trims a few additional creature comfort features which adds to the drama in the interior. The base 3.0 trim is priced at $49,990 and goes all the way up to $55,250. The Launch edition is limited to just 1500 units.

Engine and Performance
8.5/10

The 2020 Toyota GR Supra is powered by a potent 3.0L inline-six engine which produces a healthy 335 horses and 365-pound feet of torque. It is only offered in an 8-Speed Automatic transmission which is a big letdown. A manual transmission would have been a very good addition as the driving dynamics highly complement it. The BMW sourced 3.0L engine has a twin-scroll turbocharger which helps feed the engine with more air.

The power is linear and it responds actively to the slightest tap on the pedal. Oh! And the exhaust note is something to drool over. You even get a controller to tune the exhaust note as per your wish.

There are rumors that Toyota will pitch in a manual transmission option and that gives us hope. There are also rumors that a smaller 4-cylinder engine is in the works. We would have to wait and watch. The smaller Nissan 370Z overpowers the Supra in sheer power with its lighter body and more powerful engine. The bimmer and Audi produce less power than the Supra.

How quickly will you be pushed back into the seat?

Toyota impresses with a 0-60 MPH time of 3.8 seconds. This level of acceleration puts it a slab above locking its horns with the much more powerful Chevy Corvette, BMW M2 Competition and Porsche Cayman GTS. This is because of the cleverly engineered 8-speed automatic transmission which has split-second shift timing.

As much as we love the thrill of driving it with paddle shifters, a manual gearbox would have elevated the experience to a completely different level. The power is transferred to the rear wheels which makes it a hoon to drive which loves going sideways. The electronic rear differential makes sure that you get to punch hard on the accelerator without a hiccup.

*Used for MY 2019 for reference purposes

In spite of having the maximum power, 370Z shockingly is the slowest of the lot. The bimmer and Audi have similar times in spite of having completely different engines.

How well does it hold it's grip?

Supra demands a more committed driving style and we completely love that about it. Toyota was kind enough to not make a lame car. It is nimble and snaps at any given time with the tiniest of input. It motivates you to push harder and provides loads of grip while maintaining its limits. The steering is super responsive which even lets you know when the front wheel loses traction.

The driving character drastically changes with the change in mode from Normal to Sport. You will instantly feel the suspension getting stiffer and the steering more responsive when in Sports mode. The suspension is pretty firm but even taken rough roads smoothly, without making you feel the jerks.

How good are the brakes?

The brake provides ample bite to help control and maneuver the Supra even in the sketchiest of the situation. It has the largest brake discs of the lot which also translates to better braking power due to the exceptional abrasive properties of Brembo sourced brakes.

The brake pedal is ergonomic and provides proper feedback for the pressure you apply. There is no lag in the response time and so helps in precise judgment in times of need. There is minimal nosedive due to the well-contained structure of the car.

There is no data available to showcase braking power on any of the competitors but we are sure-footed of the fact that the Supra would undercut the rest with its low curb weight and grippy brakes. Nissan has the smallest brakes of the lot.

Fuel Economy
8.5/10

2020 Supra gives above-average fuel efficiency numbers. This is impressive because it gives this number without compromising on performance. The competitors with four-cylinder engines also fail to give this type of efficiency.

Toyota Supra gives the highest figure of the lot. A spirited driving might shave a bit off the numbers but it will still be efficient enough then most of its competitors. Kudos to Toyota for that.

Audi TTS is the one that manages to close the gap with the Supra, that too because it has a smaller, less frugal powerhouse. The other six-cylinders in the set only give a combined 22 miles to the gallon.

Interior
7.5/10

The seats in Supra are well-bolstered bucket seats laden with lush leather and Alcantara. The plastic bits are of high quality and feel well built. The interior is snug with a clean dashboard setup. It retains the driver-centric design in which all the functioning buttons an areas on the dash are angled toward the driver. This alone is very intuitive with all controls within the vicinity of the driver. Most of the interior bits are shared with the BMW Z4 as the German marque was a crucial part of the 2020 GR Supra.

Both the driver and passenger seats are 14-way power-adjustable with power lumbar support with an added memory setting for the driver's seat. The infotainment screen is the window into all the various audio and navigation features. It also gets Apple CarPlay Support, thanks to BMW’s intervention. The 8.8-inch screen is through which you also tune the exhaust note and fiddle with the suspension settings. The shared usage of bimmer’s switches and shift knob gives it a more upmarket feel.

The seats are comfortable but not recommended for long-distance travel as the aggressive position makes you fatigued. As Toyota doesn’t try to squeeze in rear seats like few other automakers, they can use the whole space for the perfection of the front seats. The bubble design helps in added headroom but taller drivers will feel the pinch. The bimmer and Audi provide us with two rows of seats with decent room to move about. But again this is done at the loss of the front row comfort. The rear available seats are cramped and we wonder if anyone would use it in a coupe.

What are the infotainment features available?

The combined effort of BMW and Toyota is visible on the inside. The infotainment is BMW’s iDrive System which has a revised skin and an intuitive interface. You can get a 12-speaker JBL surround system at an added premium which is well worth it. Apple CarPlay is available. A 6.5-inch screen is available as standard with the option of an 8.8-inch display. But these do come as standard on the top two trims.

Infotainment Features

  • 12-Speaker JBL HiFi Surround Sound System
  • 8.8-inch touch screen with supra command
  • Touchpad control for infotainment system
  • Toyota Supra Connect
  • SiriusXM

How much cargo can it take?

The cargo volume in 2020 Supra is impressive at 10.2 cubic feet. This is because of the liftback design with the front-engine setup. This leaves a fair bit of space to be used at the rear. The cargo space is differentiated from the cabin with a cargo cover.

Ironically, it offers more cargo space than its twin, the BMW Z4. It is at most, useful to stuff in grocery shopping for a week.

Exterior
5.0/10

The 2020 Toyota Supra is nothing like its predecessor. Its sleek angular design language contradicts the image which was etched in our minds for 22 years. The Supra is 2020 flaunts an all-LED headlamps which can be adjusted using 6-lens. The design is heavily derived from the FT-1 Concept with a tinge of the mighty Fourth Generation Supra and Toyota 2000 GT. It has a very small wheelbase, shorter than that of the Toyota 86 coupe. This also paves the way for exceptional handling and fun to drive character.

The distinctive 19-inch aluminum wheels along with the red brake calipers give it a catchy look. We won’t be so sure of the fake vents present on the car and some functional bits would have been graceful. Decklid spoiler is a very sweet touch that instantly takes us on a nostalgic ride and reminds of the early 90’s Supra Turbo.

The front and rear overhangs look a bit out of place due to the short wheelbase but Toyota has done well to hide it. The new Supra will be a tough one for many but it kind of grows on you once you get the hang of it. It’s not the shortest in the competition as that title goes to the 370Z. Both Japs have impressive handling and driving dynamics which makes it fun to drive track cars. The bimmer weighs in the most with the longest wheelbase and is not that good a track weapon.

Competition

Toyota GR Supra vs. BMW 440i coupe

The Bimmer is more like the elephant in the house. It’s comparatively bigger and heavier than the rest. It feels more like BMW was forced to make a coupe out of the 4-Series. It doesn’t have the driving enthusiasm found in Supra. It is the least efficient as well. Toyota has managed to make a better car in terms of power and efficiency, which is a lot of fun to drive. We would take the Toyota Supra over the bimmer any day for the much better and well-rounded package it provides.

Toyota GR Supra vs. Nissan 370Z Nismo

The other Jap in the set is impressive in terms of handling and comes close to the power figures of Supra. It handles well, thanks to the shorter wheelbase and precise steering. But then again the Supra gives a better experience in terms of features and welcomes you to a much plushier and upmarket interior. It is less efficient by a huge margin and that coupled to a small fuel tank means-more pitstops which is rather irritating. In spite of producing more horses, it ironically is the slowest in the whole set. So, here also, Toyota has provided with more of everything thus the go-to car.

Toyota GR Supra vs. Audi TTS Coupe

The priciest and least powerful makes for a very bad combination. Audi TTS manages to impress in the build quality and classy interiors laden with features. But the lackluster engine and unresponsive gearbox takes the charm away. The Audi would have stood a chance only if they focused more on the powerhouse. Until then, the Supra triumphs over it by a long margin.

Final Verdict

The successor of a legend did not let us down. The 2020 Toyota Supra is a well-built car that has a balanced character. It provides us with a punchy engine, feature-rich interior, and a fun to drive driving experience. Toyota has managed to do all this in a desirable package which looks the part as well. Yes, it will not have the charm that the Mk-4 Supra had. Frankly speaking, only time will decide on that. But the respectable thing is that the new Supra didn’t let us down either. For $49990, it provides an insane value for money proposition which none of its competitors has. It can even compete to take on some of the big boys. So, the 2020 Toyota Supra is a perfect sports coupe for you and you will enjoy it every bit with the exceptional driving dynamics it provides.
