Overall Rating
Most of the Sedan buyers these days focus on opting for a good looking German model but there are still some cars that are meant to rule the segment. The Volvo S90 is one such car that is not only impressive in design but also less costly.
The Chinese auto market will soon be larger than that of Europe and the United States, as they are becoming increasingly aggressive with their strategies and plans of taking the worldwide market by storm. That will have a drastic impact on the kinds of cars Western consumers can buy, as automakers accommodate their designs and components to the taste of the world's largest customer base. If you don't know, Volvo is now owned by Geely(Chinese auto giant) which wants to sell 125,000 cars a year in America. If the predictions become true, it will soon outsell major American automobile manufacturers. When you imagine of a luxury vehicle, probably a German name(BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and Audi) will come yo your mind. But think again as there are few jewels in the Vanity that are less expensive but just as exciting. Take the 2020 Volvo S90, for instance.
If the price differential were tighter, we'd probably recommend the Momentum because it comes loaded with so many features. But the R-Design and the Inscription carry the same MSRP- are only a few thousand dollars more and add an array of luxury upgrades. Which one is better is mostly a matter of personal choice. The R-Design also adds black exterior trim and a few sporty equipments, while the Inscription adds chrome trim and extra amenities.

The 2020 Volvo S90 is a luxury midsize sedan offered in Momentum, R-Design and Inscription trim levels. The Momentum is well-equipped for a base-level sedan, with features that include LED lights, keyless entry, leather upholstery, and a slew of driving aids. The trim structure then branches to the sporty R-Design and the luxurious Inscription, both of which offer more features than the Momentum.
The R-Design looks a little sportier, while the Inscription has a few trim and styling details to make it seem more luxurious. With these two versions you also get four-zone climate control, upgraded front seats, upgraded leather upholstery, and a 13-speaker Harman Kardon audio system.
A few other optional features are available for the S90, including a head-up display, a 360-degree parking camera, massaging front seats, heated and ventilated rear seats, an adaptive air suspension, and a Bowers & Wilkins premium audio system (R-Design and Inscription only).

We Recommend
Taking effective pricing into consideration, we'd recommend the Momentum because it comes loaded with value-added features. But the R-Design and the Inscription come with similar MSRP- are only few thousand dollars more and add an array of luxury upgrades. It depends on your personal choice. Meanwhile, the R-Design also adds black exterior trim and a few sporty types of equipment, while the Inscription adds chrome trim and extra amenities.
All three trims come standard with the T6 powertrain, which features a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that is both supercharged and turbocharged. It produces a healthy 316 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque; power is routed to all four wheels via an eight-speed automatic transmission. The R-Design and the Inscription are also available with the plug-in hybrid T8, which adds an 87-hp electric motor to the T6 engine for a combined output of 400 hp and 472 lb-ft.

The S60 Sedan comes with two engine options, both of them are adequate on power but the T6 is much thrilling. The S 60 Hybrid is the fastest among all with 400 hp power output and instantaneous acceleration. The suspension is tuned for a compliant ride and precise handling. Double wishbone front suspension and integral axle rear suspension soaks up road bumps in the best possible way. The optional rear air suspension with active chassis offers different settings to maximize traction levels on the road.
The steering is well-weighted and offers a good response but it isn’t sporty in any sense. The majority of drivers will be satisfied with the ride and steering response. The standard drive modes include Comfort, Dynamic, and Individual.

A host of engine options and forced induction helps to keep the Volvo relatively fuel-efficient than most of the rivals. The standard 250 hp variant of the S90 T5 puts out 23 mpg city, 35 highway and 27 combined with front-wheel drive. Adding an all-wheel-drive doesn’t affect the fuel economy much and it delivers 22/31/26 mpg for the T5 AWD. The T6 is only available with all-wheel drive and it delivers 21 mpg city, 31 mpg on the highway and 25 mpg combined. To maximize the efficiency there’s an Eco Mode, which adjusts the gearbox and throttle response for the lowest possible fuel consumption.

The S90's cabin is by far its most impressive feature. A mixture of high-end materials includes open-pore wood, genuine leather, brushed metal, and finely grained plastics. The 14-way power-adjustable front seats are comfortable and should fit all body shapes.

The S90 sedan is a classic expression of timeless minimalistic design with bold lines and tastefully creased metal. The concave grille is upright, shaped between sweptback headlights that are shaped like Thor’s hammer. The long-hood, low-slung body, with the classic Volvo hallmark of a wide and muscular shoulder line makes the car look lower than it actually is. The standard panoramic moon roof lets you get fresh air and create endless space.
Around the back, The S90 looks ultra-modern with C shaped taillights and trunk lid spoiler. A body-colored rear diffuser with integrated tailpipes adds to the sporty aspect with a classic “Volvo” badge.

Volvo is synonymous with road safety. Your Volvo S90 comes with comprehensive IntelliSafe technologies as standard, including all the safety you’d expect from a Volvo and more. These technologies can see what the driver cannot.
The BMW 5 Series Sedan comes with standard front and rear gas-charged shocks that offer better control over choppy roads. On the other hand, the S90’s suspension doesn’t offer gas-charged shocks.
Ensuring better ride quality, the front and rear suspension of the 5 Series Sedan uses coil springs, while the S90 uses transverse leaf springs in the rear. The 5 Series Sedan is 5.5 inches shorter than the S90, making the 5 Series Sedan easy to maneuver and park in tight places.
In terms of power transmission, the Jaguar XF turns out to be better than the Volvo S90. The rear-seat passengers get enough space in the Volvo S90 than the Jaguar XF, due to its greater head- and legroom. Offering more front head- and legroom than the Jaguar XF, drivers may find S90’s cabin roomier and comfy.
With the Jaguar XF, you will make fewer stops at the gas station than with the Volvo S90, due to its bigger fuel tank and better fuel economy. In terms of seating, you'll be able to fit the same number of passengers in both the Jaguar XF and the Volvo S90. Jaguar XF allows more equipment or luggage compared to the Volvo S90.
The S90 sedan may appeal to everyone who has a BMW or an Audi or a Jaguar in their shopping list. In terms of quality and comfort, the S90 surpasses the German Rivals but falls short when it comes to aggressive driving. You can throw it in corners or enjoy around town, everything comes into balance on the Swedish super sedan. The S90 is about on-point as it gets when you strip away sillier expectations.
