2021 Acura NSX Review

Pros

  • Impeccable Handling
  • Breathtaking Acceleration
  • Amazing High-Speed Stability
  • Loaded with Tech on the Inside
  • Decent Gas Mileage compared to rivals

Cons

  • Interiors feel claustrophobic
  • Infotainment System lacks Intuitiveness
  • Impractical trunk space

If you are looking for a sports car that can set a lap record on the track while also carry you comfortably to and fro from your office daily, well your choices are quite limited. Honda seems to have an answer for this problem with the Acura NSX Coupe which is known for offering blistering performance and advanced tech that too at a lucrative price. Today, the NXS faces stiff competition from the best-sellers in the segment like the Nissan GT-R and the Porsche 911 Turbo.

Overview

The 2021 Acura NSX remains unchanged from the model year 2020. However, in order to keep staleness at bay, Acura has introduced a new Long Blue Beach color for the 2021 NSX, which happens to be inspired by the original 1991 NSX. Apart from this, absolutely no changes are being made to the NSX for the model year 2021. Though there was a high probability regarding the arrival of the Acura NSX Roadster in 2021, Acura has shelved those plans for the good as it says goodbye to this Supercar next year.

The prices for the 2021 Acura NSX start from $157,500. This is excluding the destination fee of $1,995 which the NSX invites. For leasing, consider the 2021 Acura NSX to cost you $1449 per month for 39 months, with $7499 rounded off at signing. Of course, these figures might vary depending on the region you live in, they should, however, lie in the same bandwidth as mentioned.

Pricing and Features
7.0/10

Acura does not break the NSX into trims, as the 2021 Acura NSX is offered as a stand-alone trim with prices starting from $159,495. NSX prices are on the higher side for a luxury sports coupe but in comparison to premium European rivals, NSX holds immense value. The NSX base model is well-equipped but Acura provides piles of options to fully load your supercar that can cost more than $200,000.

Acura has equipped the NSX with the latest tech and its one trim is capable of offering almost all the gizmos the segment to offer. It comes loaded with tech and most of the features cater to enhance its performance.  Apart from the standard features, Acura also offers a ton of additional packages for the 2021 NSX.

Buying Advice

We will recommend getting the carbon fiber package with the Acura NSX to enhance the appearance as well as performance. Apart from that, we do not recommend investing in any other package that Acura offers as they do not lead to any improvement in the user experience. Its features pack include dual-zone automatic climate control, proximity keyless entry, ambient lighting, semi-aniline leather upholstery, heated seats, and a genuine leather-wrapped steering wheel.

Engine and Performance
8.5/10

"Stop-and-go traffic can be handled largely under electric power, cities can be traversed smoothly and quickly, and back roads and racetracks can be tamed with unbelievable efficiency." - Edmunds

The 2021 Acura NSX will get the same engine as the current model which means that it will be a V6 motor. The 3.5-liter twin-turbo V6 engine of the 2021 Acura NSX is capable of producing a whopping 572 hp and 476 lb-ft of torque. The engine comes mated to a buttery smooth 9-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission which feels quite sporty and hassle-free.

All the power gets sent to the rear wheel but there is an electric motor as well which manages the front wheels. Hence it is the dual electric motor and its battery pack which turns the NSX into an all-wheel-drive performance car. The engine is powerful enough for anything you throw at it and overtaking any car over the highway is easy and even delightful. Over on to the tracks, the gearbox, and the engine combination make sure you have adequate power at all times. The car feels the most lively while revving through the top range of the rev counter and it is quite capable of pinning you back into the seats.

The Acura NSX leads the charts in terms of output but it costs $278 per horsepower while the Porsche 911 Turbo with its 540 hp costs $299 per HP which is quite high in this comparison. However, it's the 2021 Nissan GT-R with its 565 hp 3.8L V6 engine that offers the best in class horsepower per dollar.

All the fancy gizmos and technology enable the 2021 Acura NSX to sprint from 0-60 mph in just 2.7 seconds. Its superior gearbox helps the Acura gain a solid start and offers an aggressive downshift. At 3,878 pounds, the NSX is not a light machine but the 573 horsepower makes sure that all the mass can be lugged at a lightning speed. Keep the pedal pinned and the 2021 Acura NSX clocks the quarter of a mile lap in 11.2 seconds, while the top speed of 191 mph does not take long to flash over the diver’s information display.

Fuel Economy
8.0/10

The Acura NSX manages to balances power and efficiency quite well and offers the second-best fuel economy figures. With its 3.5L hybrid V6 engine it offers one of the best-in-class fuel efficiency. The 2021 Acura NSX can roll for 21 miles in the city or can gush through 22 miles on the highway for every gallon of gasoline. Sum up these figures, and the 2021 Acura NSX is good for a combined 21 MPG.

However, it offers the smallest fuel tank capacity of 15.6-gallon with its rivals offering a bigger unit. What stands out is the fact that the NSX provides unbeatable fuel efficiency within the city which is due to the hybrid setup it provides. Acura has tuned its motor quite well to offer frugality as well as performance which keeps its overall running cost on the lower side.

Looking at the rivals, it’s just the 2021 Porsche 911 Turbo's mpg that manages to rival the Acura NSX in terms of fuel efficiency and range on offer. The Nissan GT-R is the least fuel-efficient in this class with returning 18 mpg combined and is aimed more towards the performance side.

Interior
8.0/10

"Touted as the everyday supercar, the NSX is certainly comfortable and intuitive enough for just about anyone to use as a daily driver." - Car and Driver

Unlike some other supercars, the interior of the 2021 Acura NSX is quite a silent and comfortable place to be in. Acura has carried over many elements and parts from the mainstream Honda and Acura car which leads to the cabin feeling a bit generic. However, in order to increase the premium quotient, Acura has wrapped almost everything on the inside in leather and top-notch materials. The fit and finish are also quite desirable but the overall appeal of the cabin still remains a bit generic.

The cabin space is quite useable and the NSX offers a roomy cabin with ample legroom and headroom even for taller passengers. Even while being from the Honda stable you would not find any loose fit and finish or wide panel gaps. However, the trunk capacity on offer in the 2021 Acura NSX is 4.4 cubic feet of luggage space which is quite less for any car standards.

On the inside, the car offers leather upholstery, 4-way seats, a big digital driver’s display, and a speedo along with a 7.0-inch touchscreen for the infotainment system. Overall, the cabin of the Acura does no make you feel special but also does not disappoint when it comes to usability or an upmarket feel. Speaking of practicality, the 2021 Acura NSX offers a cargo capacity of 4.4 cubic feet.

The 2021 Acura NSX Coupe offers a 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system which might sound a tad bit small for this segment. The 2021 Acura NSX gets Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, as well as navigation, Bluetooth, HD radio, and standard FM. It also offers an ELS audio system that offers quality sound and bass.

The screen is not the sharpest though but has a clean interface and good graphics that make it quite easy to use. However, even with all its perks, the system has aged quite a lot as per the current industry standard and Acura could do well if it swaps the unit with the one that has been introduced in the Acura MDX or the Acura TLX. That said, standard interior and infotainment features offered in the 2021 Acura NSX are:

  • Automatic air-con system with air filtration system
  • Active Sound Control (ASC)
  • Tilt and telescopic steering column
  • 12V power outlet
  • Aluminum Footrest and Sport Pedals
  • Illuminated Steering Wheel-Mounted Controls
  • HomeLink Remote System
  • Leather-Wrapped Steering Wheel
  • 7-inch infotainment touchscreen system
  • 9-speaker ELS Studio audio system
  • In-built navigation
  • Bluetooth audio support
  • Android Auto and Apple CarPlay

Exterior
9.0/10

"The roof sits low; the front end’s even lower, with its blacked-out grille framed by a strip of LEDs wide enough to attract stray 737s" - TheCarConnection

The 2021 Acura NSX remains unchanged on the exterior part, and that's for goof as the current-gen NSX looks nothing short of drop-dead gorgeous. However, in order to keep staleness at bay, Acura has introduced a new Long Blue Beach color option for the 2021 NSX, which is inspired by the original 1991 NSX. The NSX strikes a superb balance between the looks of a sports car and a supercar. From its looks, it is not hard to perceive that the car is all about speed, handling, and high performance.

It looks rather distinct with its sleek headlights as well as a sharp-looking bumper at the front. From the rear, the rectangular taillights give the imposing look while the spoiler looks quite sporty. When viewed from the side, the sleek rearview mirrors and the air ducts assure the onlooker that it is a car focused on razor-sharp handling and performance. All the exterior elements come together to offer great aerodynamics as well as a sharp look.

Compared to the rivals, Acura NSX's dimensions are nicely proportioned and lend it a wide and low stance. However, the 103.5 inches wheelbase is one of the shortest in its segment. Some of the most notable exterior features of the 2021 Acura NSX are:

  • Auto On/Off LED Headlights
  • Composite Material made Body Panels
  • Body-Colored Power Heated ORVM’s with LED Turn Signals and Memory Function
  • Remote Keyless Smart Entry System

Safety
7.0/10

The Acura NSX has not yet been tested by NHTSA and IIHS yet and it is likely that the car will never get tested. The NSX comes with a defined chassis that is capable of protecting its occupants in case of multiple rollovers.

The Acura NSX offers a decent array of safety features and driver-assistance features. You get the usual suspects like traction control, brake assist, ABS, EBD, and others. The safety and driver-assistance tech is adequate in absolute terms but relatively the safety features list seems quite limited. Some of the most prominent safety features on offer in the 2021 Acura NSX are:

  • Multi-Angle Rearview Camera with Dynamic Guidelines
  • TPMS with location and pressure indicators
  • Front, Side, Driver’s Knee, Side Curtain Airbags
  • Tether for Child on passenger seats
  • Corner and Backup sensors
  • Driver and Passenger Side Seatbelt Reminder
  • Seat Belt Pre-Tensioners

Competition
6.0/10

2021 Acura NSX Coupe vs. Nissan GT-R

Acura’s take on the hybrid supercar has enabled it to finally beat the GT-R in terms of performance. Its less powerful gas engine is supplemented by a 73 hp electric setup that gives the combination a total output of 573 hp, 8 more than the GT-R Premium. The drivetrain also improves hugely on the fuel economy, making it go 5 miles further per gallon of fuel than the GT-R. The GT-R doesn’t lag behind it much, and we would happily take the $44,000 along with a more sporty interior.

2021 Acura NSX Coupe vs. Porsche 911 Turbo

The Porsche 911 Turbo is quite a popular car in the sports car category and it is not difficult to see why. It offers a level of sophistication that no other car in this comparison can rival. It’s built and quality of material cannot be rivaled and the 911 Turbo also offers a host of advanced gadgets. However, when it comes to space on the inside, it lacks behind its rivals, and also the additional packages make it quite an expensive car. In comparison, the Acura NSX offers better performance and value for money.

Final Verdict

The Acura NSX is quite a focused performance car, but while being a sports car it does not come with the bunch of problems that most sports cars do. It is a car you can take to the track as well as your office every day. Not just that, the NSX offers great value for your money. Couple that along with the brand reliability of Honda behind it, the NSX is a bang for the buck proposition if you want a value for the money sports car. However, speaking of the downsides, the NSX lacks in terms of the special feeling inside the cabin and does not offer a practical trunk space.
