The 2021 Chevrolet Trailblazer is an all-new subcompact SUV from Chevrolet and is available for sale at a base MSRP of $19,000 and goes all the way to $27,000. Available in five trim configurations, the 2021 Trailblazer gets a 1.2L turbocharged inline-3 motor producing 137 hp, which is capable of putting out a 0-60 MPH time of 9.4 seconds and offers a gas mileage of 31 MPG. The 2021 Trailblazer can also be had with the 1.3L turbocharged motor putting out 155 hp, offering a towing capacity of 1,000 lbs.

Overview

The all-new 2021 Chevrolet Trailblazer is an inexpensive subcompact SUV starting at an MSRP of just $19,000, and offers Camaro-like exterior styling cues. The Chevy has sporty good looks with a spacious cabin loaded with plenty of tech features. The new Trailblazer is smaller and slots between the Trax and compact Equinox.  Available for sale in five trim levels, Chevy offers diverse configurations - two turbocharged 3-cylinder engines with two transmissions and FWD or AWD drivetrain. The Trailblazer's turbocharged engine is similar to the 2021 Buick Encore GX. Also of note are its two unique trim levels: the off-road-oriented Activ and sporty RS.

The 2021 Chevy Trailblazer is not the rugged 4x4 crossover it once was while its driving dynamics leave things to be desired. However, the starting price of under $20,000 makes the 2021 Trailblazer a compelling choice. The Chevy competes with the likes of the 2021 Mazda CX-30, 2021 Hyundai Kona, and 2021 Kia Seltos. Let's find out how well the all-new 2021 Chevrolet Trailblazer turns out in comparison to the rivals.

Pricing and Features
9.0/10

The 2021 Trailblazer starts at less than $20,000, making it cheaper than the Trax, but that low base price doesn't buy a very desirable SUV. - Caranddriver

How Much Does the Chevrolet Trailblazer Cost?

The Chevy Trailblazer has a starting price of $19,000 MSRP and goes all the way up to $27,000 for the off-road-oriented Activ AWD trim. The 2021 Trailblazer is one of the least-expensive vehicles in the subcompact SUV class. Chevy offers the 2021 Trailblazer in diverse configurations - you can choose from two turbocharged engines, CVT or 9-speed automatic transmission, and FWD or AWD drivetrain.

Both 2021 Trailblazer Activ and RS (reviewed separately) start at the same $25,500 MSRP, but they are aimed at different customers. The ACTIV trim is an off-road-oriented trim differentiated by a larger grille, Hankook Sport Terrain tires, and tuned dampers. The Trailblazer RS is the sportiest trim in the lineup, though in appearance only. Both trims have a 1.3-liter standard with AWD being a $1,500 option.

Buying Advice

The all-new 2021 Chevrolet Trailblazer is offered in five different trim configurations, we'd recommend to go for the most valued mid-tier LT trim priced at $23,700 for the FWD variant and $25,700 for the AWD variant. The Trailblazer LT offers an impressive list of features like heated and electrically adjustable seats, 17-inch alloy wheels, a 6-speaker audio system, and many more. Furthermore, we'd also suggest you spend an extra $2,000 to get the optional 1.3L turbocharged motor.

Engine and Performance
6.2/10

While the Trailblazer doesn't offer a particularly athletic chassis, it handles curves ably enough. - CarBuzz

The 2021 Chevy Trailblazer is offered with two different turbocharged three-cylinder engine options: a 137-horsepower 1.2-liter and a 155-horsepower 1.3-liter. Neither engine move the Trailblazer with much oomph but the turbo feels peppy enough. The 1.3-liter Trailblazer with AWD delivers a decent 9.4 seconds 0 to 60 mph time. With Trailblazer, you will also get a 1000-lbs towing capacity apart from the choice of two dynamic engines.

If you want a front-wheel-drive Trailblazer, an efficient continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT) is the only choice and is available on both engines. On the other hand, All-wheel-drive Trailblazers come with a 1.3-liter engine only and smooth-shifting nine-speed automatic transmission. The CVT does not have much of that rubber-band effect and works better than expected with both the drivetrains.

"The ride quality suits just fine in the comfort arena." - Kbb.com

At slower speeds, there's an initial punch and the Trailblazer feels more powerful than its size. But the three-cylinder engines quickly lose breath at highway speeds. You need careful planning while merging onto the highway, climbing hills, or executing high-speed maneuvers. Talking of the ride quality, the 2021 Trailblazer offers a comfortable ride over smooth surfaces which gets a bit harsh over right terrains. The SUV may not have a very athletic chassis but it handles well around the curves.

Drive modes include Normal, Sport, and Snow. Though driving Trailblazer in sports mode didn't make much difference against the claims of modifying shifting and steering for quicker response. Among the competitors, the Chevy Trailblazer 1.2-liter engine turned out to be the least powerful offering, but the $19,000 starting price justifies the choice. This is followed closely by the 146 hp 2021 Seltos and the 147 hp 2021 Hyundai Kona. The 2021 CX-30 was the most powerful offering, putting out 186 hp and 186 lb-ft of torque.

Fuel Economy
7.0/10

The most efficient Trailblazer, according to the EPA, is the front-wheel drive model with the larger 1.3-liter three-cylinder - Car And Driver

The 2021 Chevrolet Trailblazer gets an EPA estimated fuel economy of 28 MPG in the city and 31 MPG on the highway with its 1.2-liter engine. The more powerful 1.3L engine improves the gas mileage ratings to 29/33 mpg city/highway. The AWD Trailblazer drops the fuel economy to 26/30 MPG city/highway.

When the 13.2-gallon fuel tank is full, you can expect just over 400 miles from the lightest Trailblazer configuration and around 370 miles from the heaviest. In the subcompact class, the 2021 Trailblazer will be the most fuel-efficient choice in any configuration. Competitors like the Kona and Seltos get more horses thus deliver a slightly lower gas mileage of 28 MPG and 27 MPG respectively.

Interior
7.6/10

Unlike rivals such as the Toyota C-HR, the Trailblazer doesn't sacrifice utility in the name of style. - Edmunds

The Chevrolet Trailblazer is a subcompact SUV with 5 seats and a cabin that is spacious, functional, and loaded with ample interior features in the upper trims. Since the youthful Trailblazer is an inexpensive SUV, material quality feels on the bargain side. You will find plenty of black plastic switchgear, but they don’t feel cheap considering the price. The front seats are comfortable and roomy enough for taller passengers while those in the rear will also appreciate the 39.4 inches of legroom.

The first two trims offer six-way manually-adjustable driver's seats while the Heated front seats with ten-way power-adjustable seats are standard from the LT upwards. The Activ trim has some nice and upscale touches like a neat cloth pattern on the front doors and brown-painted dash trim. The interior offers jet black/almond butter and jet black with Arizona accent colors, both of which are also available with all the trims of the 2021 Chevrolet Trailblazer.

"Spacious and with clever storage solutions, the 2021 Trailblazer is one of the roomiest small crossovers." - TheCarConnection.com

The cargo capacity of 25.3 cu ft on offer from the 2021 Trailblazer is also one of the best. The spacious cargo expands to 54.4 cubic feet of total cargo with the second-row folded flat. The rear seats split 60/40 for cargo storage. The Trailblazer can accommodate large objects up to 8.5 feet long as its driver seats also fold flat.

The Chevrolet Trailblazer comes with a 7.0-inch touchscreen display powered by Chevrolet Infotainment 3 system. An optional 8.0-inch touchscreen display is available. Justifying the cost of under $20,000, the 2021 Trailblazer has standard Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, a four-speaker stereo, Bluetooth, two USB ports, and a Wi-Fi hot spot.

  • Available infotainment features: an 8-inch touch screen, HD Radio, satellite radio, two additional USB ports, a six- or seven-speaker stereo, and wireless device charging
  • Additional standard interior features: remote keyless entry
  • Available Interior features: automatic climate control, proximity keyless entry, push-button start, remote start, cruise control, a panoramic sunroof, and a power liftgate

Slotting between the Chevy Trax and Chevy Equinox, the 2021 Trailblazer sheds those dull skins to stand out like the Blazer. - The Car Connection

The 2021 Chevrolet Trailblazer's front view offers modern-day styling with sharp LED lighting, massive 18-inch alloy wheels, and a sleeker bumper and air dam design. However, most of these features are only offered with the higher trims like the Activ priced at an MSRP of $25,500. Along with that, many other optional exterior features and packages like the panoramic sunroof, keyless entry keypad for $165, nine exterior colors including the $645 iridescent pearl tri-coat, Blackout Package for $495, and Sun and Liftgate Package for an additional $1,770 are also offered with the 2021 Chevrolet Trailblazer. "The Activ trim puts on a more rugged mien with a more open grille, some body cladding, 17-inch wheels and what the automaker calls “simulated skidplates.” " - Kbb.com

Safety
8.0/10

The NHTSA gave the 2021 Chevrolet Trailblazer an overall safety rating of four out of five stars. According to NHTSA, the 2021 Trailblazer failed to impress in the agency's front passenger-side crash test and hence received a mediocre 3-star rating, which is the lowest of all the subcompact crossover SUVs. IIHS has not crash-tested the chevy yet.

Chevrolet equips the 2021 Trailblazer with Chevrolet Safety Assist that is standard and includes automatic emergency braking, front pedestrian braking, forward collision alert, and a few more. The advanced driver-assist features such as adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, and lane-departure warning as optional extras.

2021 Chevrolet Trailblazer vs 2021 Mazda CX-30

Performance-wise, the 2021 Mazda CX-30 delivers more power and is better in terms of 0-60 MPH and quarter-mile times. It houses a 2.5 Liter Inline-4 engine against the smaller 1.2 Liter Turbo three-cylinder powerhouse in the 2021 Trailblazer. However, the exterior look of the 2021 Trailblazer is more compelling with loads of sporty accents and modern features. The interior space of both cars is quite similar for both cars but the Trailblazer slightly edges out here too. The premium material selection, plush seating, and tech-savvy cabin also are USPs of the Chevrolet Trailblazer. With a base MSRP of $22,050, the 2021 CX-30 is also more expensive than the 2021 Trailblazer.

2021 Chevrolet Trailblazer vs 2021 Kia Seltos

Coming in at a base MSRP of $21,990, the 2021 Kia Seltos comes with a 2L naturally aspirated inline-4 motor, putting out the lowest torque on offer in the subcompact crossover segment, making it the worst performer of the segment in terms of the 0-60 MPH and quarter-mile numbers. The gas mileage of Seltos is also not as impressive as the 2021 Trailblazer. However, the 2021 Seltos offers more safety and interior features. With close to $3,000 price difference between the 2021 Trailblazer, we feel that the 2021 Chevy Trailblazer is the more value-for-money offering.

2021 Chevrolet Trailblazer vs 2021 Hyundai Kona

The lightest crossover in the segment is the new 2021 Hyundai Kona which decent performance stats and a modern design. With a more 2L naturally aspirated motor under the hood of the 2021 Kona, which comes at a base MSRP of $20,400, managed to deliver a marginally better 0-60 MPH time and quarter-mile times in comparison to the 2021 Chevrolet Trailblazer. However, the 2021 Trailblazer is more spacious on the inside and offers more cargo capacity as well. It also gets a more feature-rich infotainment system even for the lower trims. With a base MSRP of $19,000, the 2021 Chevrolet Trailblazer undercuts the 2021 Kona by close to $1,400.

Final Verdict

The 2021 Chevrolet Trailblazer has a lot of things going for it. This subcompact crossover SUV offers a plush and spacious interior with excellent cargo capacity, many interior features, and an impressive infotainment system. The gas mileage is the best in the segment too. If you could live with the mediocre acceleration from the turbocharged motor on offer with the 2021 Trailblazer, it is quite an impressive proposition in the subcompact SUV segment and hence should be on the shortlist if you are in search of an SUV from the same segment.
