About 2021 Ford Expedition

3.8

Overall Rating

The 2021 Ford Expedition, out for sale now, receives minor changes over the 2020 model. The 2021 model range starts at an MSRP of $51,690. This gets you 3.5-liter V-6 that pairs with rear- or all-wheel drive. There are 5 variants - XL/XLT/Limited/King Ranch/Platinum. Today the Expedition faces tough competition from GMC Yukon, Chevrolet Tahoe, and the Nissan Armada.

The 2021 Ford Expedition comes in from last year with little to no notable changes. Going by the 2022 Ford Expedition's spy shots, the SUV will bring along an all-new and advanced 15.5-inch infotainment system sourced from the Mustang Mach-E. Coming back to the 2021 Ford Expedition, the SUV does get some revamps for the new model year that included new wheel options and designs, and  Ford Co-Pilot 360 being offered as standard on all trims and optional on the XLT trim. Also, there is a new 5-seater Expedition in town, going by the name 2021 Ford Expedition STX.

Coming to the prices, the 2021 Ford Expedition is offered in a total of 5 trims - XL, XLT, Limited, King Ranch, and Platinum. There is also an extended wheelbase Expedition Max variant on offer, which is reviewed separately. The prices of the 2021 Ford Expedition starts from $49,995 for the base XL trim and range up to $76,825 for the range-topping Platinum AWD trim. For leasing, consider the 2021 Ford Expedition to cost you around $450 per month for 36 months with a 10% payment rounded off at signing.

The base model XLT comes with a good number of standard features and the Limited trim includes all the features of the XLT and adds features like wireless charging, Bang, and Olufsen Speakers. However, a few features are also available to upgrade in the XLT trim. Going for the XLT and upgrading it to your taste and style and the features you would like is a good option. It is also one of the top-selling Large SUVs in the market.

Pricing and Features
7.0/10

The 2021 Ford Expedition offers four trim levels XLT, Limited, King Ranch, and Platinum. Prices for the Ford Expedition start at $54,205 for the XLT and end at $75,330 for the Platinum trim. The Platinum trim adds luxury and is comparable to the premium models like the Lincoln Navigator and the Cadillac Escalade. The XLT trim, priced at $54,205 comes with plenty of features as standard with the highlights being Auto High-Beam Headlamp, Rear View Camera with Backup Assist Grid Lines and Washer and Pre-Collision Assist with Automatic Emergency Braking. The Limited trim comes next at $64,740. It gets B&O Sound System by Bang & Olufsen, Voice-Activated Touchscreen Navigation System with Pinch-to-Zoom Capability, SiriusXM Traffic, and Travel Link, Blind Spot Information System with Cross-Traffic Alert with Trailer Tow Monitoring and Stability Control.

The King Ranch trim sounds like a sauce at Subway but is priced at $74,290. It adds luxury to the existing trim line and gets features like Enhanced Active Park Assist System with Parallel Parking, Park Out Assist, and Reverse Perpendicular Parking, Lane-Keeping System (Includes Lane-Keeping Assist, Lane-Keeping Alert and Driver Alert) and 360-Degree Camera with Split-View and Front/Rear Washer. The Platinum trim completes the Expedition lineup at $75,330 and adds to the King Ranch trim’s features. It adds Enhanced Active Noise Control, Center Console-Real Wood Accents, Multicontour Seats with Active Motion. The Platinum trim doesn’t differ much from the King Ranch trim. It just adds a little more luxury to the Expedition Lineup.

Buying Advice

All the trims come standard with a turbocharged V6 engine and a 10-speed automatic transmission and RWD configuration. AWD is available at an additional $3,000 and each trim is also available with an extended wheelbase MAX model for an additional $3,000. The base model XLT comes with a good number of standard features. Going for the XLT and upgrading it to your taste and style and the features you would like is a good option. It is also one of the top-selling Large SUVs in the market.

Engine and Performance
7.5/10

If the only solution to surviving the end of the world was a road trip, you could fit two of every animal in the Ford Expedition with enough room left over for a suitcase or two.  - Car Buzz

The 2021 Ford Expedition carries over its engine from the outgoing 2020 model. The Ford Expedition equips a 3.5L Twin Turbo V6 engine that is paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission. This is the standard configuration across all the trims and the RWD and AWD can be upgraded for extra dollars. The engine is capable of producing 375hp at 5,000 rpm and 470 lb-ft of torque at 3,500 rpm.

As standard, the power is fed to the rear wheels but one can always opt for the AWD version. The engine is mated to a 10-speed automatic gearbox developed in-house by Ford. It provides seamless shifts and is ultra-responsive. In the AWD trims, the transmission is coupled with Ford’s clever terrain management system.Ford’s V6 engine coupled with the 10-speed automatic transmission can propel the Expedition from 0-60 MPH in a mere 6.7 seconds and provide a quarter-mile timing of 15.5 seconds. The top speed of the Ford Expedition is 120 MPH and it brings the vehicle to a halt from 60-0 MPH in 129ft.

The Expedition’s 3.5L Twin Turbo V6 engine has an impressive performance in contrast to its V8 rivals. The horsepower and torque figures are only matched by the Nissan Armada with 390hp and 394 lb-ft of torque. Both the GMC Yukon and Chevrolet Tahoe equip identical engines and have identical output, which is much expected as they belong to the same parent company.

Fuel Economy
6.0/10

The Ford Expedition is one of the most fuel-efficient large SUVs available in the market. It equips a decent-sized 25-gallon fuel tank. It provides 17 mpg in the city 24 mpg on the highway and 19 mpg combined. The Ford Expedition offers a range of 510/690/570 miles on city/highway/combined respectively. The all-wheel-drive version further drops its figures to 22 mpg on the highway. There seems to be no difference in the MPG figures between the regular and long-wheelbase versions despite the extra length.

Interior
8.0/10

While it is otherwise splendid inside, the cabin's cheap-looking plastics are flagrant fouls and unacceptable for a vehicle that costs this much. -Car and Driver

The 2021 Ford Expedition boasts an extravagant modern-looking cabin with plenty of premium materials. The upper trims have upgraded leather upholstery, aluminum and wood trim pieces, and lots of leather-wrapped pieces. This, however, fails to provide the cabin of the Expedition a nice feel. The Platinum model which is top of its trim gets the most number of interior features, although some of the features do sound fancy for a 7 seater. The Platinum gets such features that will blow your mind such as multi-contour front seats with a massage function.

The Expedition seats 8 people but if you choose captain-seats for the second row, the number of passengers drops to 7. Regardless of the configuration you go for, there is ample space for passengers of all the rows to seat comfortably. The seats are humongous and high on comfort.

They are snug and long distances should not be a problem at all. For absolute comfort, while grand touring, the Expedition gets a truly massive and one of the biggest armrests in the history of armrests, and underneath gets cubby storage which might be able to fit even an i-pad.

It’s intuitive to use and gets Apple Carplay and Android Auto connectivity as standard. The touchscreen works as a display for the reversing camera and comes with dynamic guidelines.

Exterior
8.8/10

It has rugged body-on-frame construction, plenty of ground clearance, and a four-wheel-drive system to get you where you're going even if the path ahead is a little rocky.  -Edmunds

The 2021 Ford Expedition is a bulky-looking vehicle that can be expected out of a large SUV. It equips a Bright Chrome grille with Magnetic-painted accents, Black Roof-Rack Side Rails, Halogen Fog Lamps, Quad-beam reflector headlamps, Center High-Mounted Stop Lamp (CHMSL), Configurable Daytime Running Lamps (DRL), and an Available Panoramic Vista Roof.

The front end is boxy and has a lot of chrome which makes it look premium. Especially on the top-spec trims, the Expedition gets super blingy and in-your-face. The side profile is flanked by rather giant 22-inch wheels with continuously controlled damping which set the mood of the SUV. The 2021 Ford Expedition is expected to maintain this look of the SUV because it has been one of its selling points.

2021 Ford Expedition Vs 2021 GMC Yukon

The GMC Yukon is also available in two body styles namely the Yukon and Yukon XL, which can be paralleled to the Expedition and Expedition Max. However, the Yukon lags in terms of cargo space, engine performance, passenger space, ride quality, and towing capacity. It holds a price lower than the Ford Expedition. The Yukon also employs cheaper interior materials than the Ford Expedition Overall, the Ford Expedition beats the GMC Yukon in all aspects but is also an expensive option.

2021 Ford Expedition Vs 2021 Chevrolet Tahoe

The Chevy Tahoe is mechanically the sister of the GMC Yukon, both belonging to General Motors. There is little to no difference between the Tahoe and the Yukon. The Tahoe is underwhelming in front of the Expedition, but it is available at a lower price than the Ford Expedition. Only go for the Tahoe if you have a really stringent budget and you cannot deviate from it.

2021 Ford Expedition Vs 2021 Nissan Armada

The Nissan Armada provides an upscale cabin, good towing capacity but features an underwhelming fuel economy. The Ford Expedition lacks the Armada cabins fine-styling and equips an engine less powerful than the Nissan Armada. Price-wise, the Nissan Armada can prove to be much more valuable with a mighty powertrain. Expedition does offer great interiors but the luxe models are priced exorbitantly. Overall, the Nissan Armada offers a better package than the Ford Expedition.

Final Verdict

The Ford Expedition has been one of the top-selling large SUVs in the US market. It is a competent vehicle with lots of potentials, good performance, and a huge cabin. It also has an edge in terms of the cargo space offered. If you are on a tight budget then the Nissan Armada is truly valuable and an intelligent option. Otherwise, the Ford Expedition is a well-balanced option that packs performance, space, fuel economy, and quality in one.
