Overall Rating
The 2021 Hyundai Ioniq Electric is a fully electric compact hatchback that is available for a base MSRP of $33,245. Coming in with just 2 trims, this hatchback retains the same 100 kW electric motor producing 134 hp. This motor comes mated to a 1-speed automatic transmission and offers 170 miles of estimated range. It is only offered with the FWD drivetrain and the car can do 0-60 mph in 8.3 seconds and offers a quarter-mile time of 16.5 seconds.
Hyundai Ioniq Electric is a compact fully-electric compact hatchback that was launched in 2016. Being a well-built hatchback with an excellent list of standard features and equipment coupled with the best in class warranty on offer, the Hyundai Ioniq Electric turned out to be an instant success. With the arrival of the 2021 iteration of the Hyundai Ioniq Electric, which is now available for sale at a base MSRP of $33,245, turned out to be quite similar to the outgoing 2020 model, as it only sees an update to the exterior color on offer. The 100Â kW 134 hp electric motor mated to the 1-speed automatic and FWD drivetrain is retained too.
Coming in with 5 exterior colors and 2 interior colors, along with the same 2 trim configurations, the 2021 Hyundai Ioniq Electric also turned out to be a spacious and feature-rich moniker of the segment, which comes with a 10.3" touchscreen infotainment system, 8-speaker Harman Kardon audio system, heated and powered seats, leather upholstery, and many more as standard. Available for a base lease price of $195/month, can this electric hatchback compete with the likes of the 2021 Nissan Leaf Electric, 2021 Chevrolet Bolt EV, and the 2021 Kia Niro EV? We will find out in this in-depth review.
Even though the base SE trim is a decent value for money proposition, we would spend the extra money and go with the top-of-the-line 2021 Ioniq Electric Limited, which is available for a base MSRP of $38,815. This trim comes with all the bells and whistles like 10.3" touchscreen infotainment, 8-speaker audio system, leather upholstery, sunroof, autonomous driving assist, blind-spot monitor, and many more interior and safety features, all of which are not available in the base SE trim.

The 2021 Ioniq Electric is equipped with a 38.3-kWh battery pack, but that's less than rivals such as the Nissan Leaf and Chevrolet Bolt EV offer. - Carbuzz
The 2021 Hyundai Ioniq Electric is a compact hatchback that is offered in the same 2 trim configurations, similar to the outgoing 2020 model. The trims are SE and Limited. The 2021 Ioniq Electric comes with the same 100 kW electric motor mated to the 1-speed automatic and FWD drivetrain, putting out 134 hp and 218 lb-ft of torque. When it comes to the exterior, the car sees no changes, apart from the addition of the amazon gray color and removal of the summit gray color. All the exterior features like LED headlights with LED DRLs, powered side mirrors, 16" alloy wheels, etc are standard too.
The interior of the 2021 Ioniq Electric also sees no changes from the outgoing model, retaining the same 2 interior colors and all the features like 10.3" touchscreen infotainment system, 8-speaker Harmon Kardon audio system, leather upholstery, sunroof, etc, all of which are offered as standard with the Limited trim. The safety and driver-assistance features like semi-autonomous driving assist, blind-spot monitoring, rear-collision warning, and many more on offer make it an impressive proposition when it comes to safety. However, the 2021 Ioniq Electric doesn't get any customization and personalization options.

Hyundai conceived of the Ioniq as a high-efficiency hatchback, not a hot one. - Thecarconnection
The Hyundai's 100kW magnetic synchronous motor and 319.4-volt electrical system produce peak outputs of 134 hp and 218 lb-ft of torque. The motor is paired with a 38.3 kWh lithium-ion battery pack and the power is put out through a 1-speed automatic transmission and the FWD drivetrain. This powertrain also comes with paddle shifters and a regenerative braking system. A push-button drive selector is offered too. The performance on offer from this powertrain turned out to decent for the segment.
Available for a base MSRP of $33,245, the 2021 Hyundai Ioniq Electric retains the same ride and handling of the outgoing 2020 model, as it sees no changes to the mechanicals and other suspension components. This compact fully electric hatchback offered decent ride quality, during slow city driving as well as highway driving. The undulations on the roads are absorbed with ease and only the sharpest of the potholes get in. Even the handling was sure-footed, with minimal low body roll and a precise steering setup.
The 2020 Hyundai Ioniq Electric managed to do the 0-60 mph in 8.3 seconds and can complete the quarter-mile run in 16.5 seconds, both of which are quite decent for the segment. This electric hatchback managed to attain a top speed of 108 MPH, which is the best of the segment. However, when it comes to the braking performance, it was quite unimpressive, as it gave out a mediocre 60-0 mph braking distance of 152 feet, even with a decently large 11" front rotors and 11.2" rear rotors.

The 2021 Hyundai Ioniq Electric turned out to be the least powerful offering of the segment, which is followed by the 2021 Nissan Leaf, which gave out 147 hp and 236 lb-ft of torque. Both the 2021 Chevrolet Bolt EV and the 2021 Kia Niro EV gave out the best in class 200 hp and 201 hp, respectively. When it comes to the 0-60 mph time offered by the monikers, the 2021 Ioniq Electric surprisingly came out with a decent time of 8.3 seconds, surpassing the more powerful Nissan Leaf. However, both the Bolt EV and the Niro EV gave out a better 6.5 seconds and 6.7 seconds of 0-60 mph time.
The 2021 Ioniq Electric is equipped with a 38.3-kWh battery pack, but that's less than rivals such as the Nissan Leaf and Chevrolet Bolt EV offer. - Caranddriver
Retaining the same powertrain of the outgoing 2020 model, the 2021 Hyundai Ioniq Electric comes unchanged in terms of battery capacity and range on offer. This compact fully electric hatchback offers a city MPGe of 145 miles and a highway MPGe of 121 miles. A combined MPGe of 136 miles is also offered, making it a decent daily driver.
The car also offers a total range of 170 miles. Coming in with many range enhancing features like heat pump (available only with the Limited trim), which helps the car to give out the excellent range and MPGe figures in the cold, and regenerative braking system, the 2021 Ioniq Electric turned out to be a decent offering in terms of range and efficiency.

The 2021 Hyundai Ioniq Electric offered better MPGe figures and range, especially in comparison to the 2021 Nissan Leaf. The MPGe combined of 136 miles offered by the 2021 Ioniq Electric was also better than the 2021 Niro EV which offered 112 miles of MPGe combined. However, the 2021 Chevrolet Bolt EV turned out to be the best of the lot in terms of range, offering an impressive 259 miles of range.
In staying true to the EV's eco-friendly ethos, Hyundai made a point to utilize mostly sustainable materials in the construction of the Ioniq Electric's cabin. - Carbuzz
The 2021 Hyundai Ioniq Electric's interior materials used are somewhat derived from nature. The cabin is made using soft plastic, which comes from sugarcane fibers and the recycling of old plastic. The use of sustainable materials doesn't detract from the overall feel and look of the interior, which is comfortable regardless of the trim you choose. Available for sale at a base MSRPÂ of $33,245, the 2021 Ioniq Electric comes with the same 2 interior colors of the outgoing 2020 model, which are black and gray. The features like leather upholstery, heated and powered seats, automatic climate control, etc are offered too.
Being a 5-seater compact hatchback, the 2021 Ioniq Electric turned out to be quite comfortable for both the front and rear-seat passengers. Coming with excellent shoulder room and legroom for the front seat passengers, the 2021 Ioniq Electric doesn't feel claustrophobic. The headroom of 39.1" is also decent for the segment. The rear seat is also on par with the rest of the rivals, with adequate headroom, legroom, and shoulder room. The cargo capacity of 23 cu ft turned out to be one of the best of the segment, making it an excellent choice for those long weekend drives with 5-passengers and their luggage on board.Â

The 2021 Ioniq Electric turned out to be the most spacious offering of the segment, for the front seat passenger. However, both the 2021 Leaf and the 2021 Niro EV offered a better headroom for the front seat. When it comes to the rear seat, the 2021 Bolt EV gave slightly better headroom and legroom. The cargo capacity of 23.6 cu ft offered by the 2021 Leaf was the best in class, which is followed by the 2021 Ioniq Electric. Both the Bolt EV and the Niro EV gave out much lower cargo space. The entertainment duties are handled by a 10.3" touchscreen infotainment system and an 8-speaker Harman Kardon audio system.
However, the base SE trim of the 2021 Ioniq Electric offers an 8" touchscreen infotainment system and comes mated to a 6-speaker audio system. Both the infotainment systems turned out to be very intuitive to use, with easy to use layout and a low learning curve. The connectivity features like Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, Wi-Fi hotspot, Bluetooth, AUX, USB, etc are standard too. The audio through the 6-speaker audio system was decent for the price. However, we would recommend the 8-speaker audio system of the Limited trim if you are an audiophile. Some of the interior and infotainment features on offer are:
It looks simpler, handsomer, and more organic than a Prius. - Thecarconnection
Coming with no updates to the exterior design, in comparison to the outgoing 2020 model, the 2021 Hyundai Ioniq Electric, which is available for a base MSRP of $33,245, does still manage to look quirky, especially in the front view. This compact hatchback's front view does look quite handsome due to the lack of any grille, LED headlights with LED DRLs on the bumpers, and an air dam neatly integrated into the lower portion of the bumper. The imposing hood line and the low height of 57.1" also add to the sportiness of this hatchback. It can be had in 5 exterior colors too, with the new addition being Amazon Gray.
The 2021 Hyundai Ioniq Electrics side view also looks cool and quirky, similar to the front view. The main highlights are the 16" alloy wheels wrapped in P205/55R16 all-season tires, heated and powered side mirrors, neat character lines with subtle fender flares, and the coupe-like roofline. However, the rearview has to be the best looking angle of the 2021 Ioniq Electric, as it comes with the LED taillights, a futuristic-looking trunk liftgate with multiple rear windows, and black cladding neatly integrated into the bumpers. The length and wheelbase are one of the highest too.

The 2021 Hyundai Ioniq Electric and the 2021 Nissan Leaf turned out to be the biggest hatchbacks in terms of exterior dimensions. However, the 2021 Ioniq Electric managed to be the lightest offering too, coming in with a curb weight of just 3,164 lbs. The 2021 Kia Niro EV was the heaviest of the segment. Both the 2021 Bolt EV and the 2021 Leaf also came out to be heavier than the 2021 Ioniq Electric by about 400 lbs. Some of the exterior features on offer with the 2021 Hyundai Kona Electric are:
The Hyundai Ioniq sports standard automatic high beams, active lane control, and automatic emergency braking. - Edmunds
The 2021 Hyundai Ioniq Electric has not been crash-tested by the NHTSA yet. Even the outgoing 2020 model has not been crash-tested yet. The IIHS has also not crash-tested both the model years of the 2021 Ioniq Electric. However, the 2021 Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid received a good rating in most of the subsections of the IIHS crash test. But it wasn't selected as the top safety pick by the organization.
The 2021 Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid also managed to be quite impressive in terms of overall build quality, as the car is entirely constructed with high tensile steel. Many safety and driver-assistance features like forward-collision warning, automated emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, rear cross-traffic alert, etc are offered. Some of the important safety and driver-assistance features on offer are:
Available for a base selling price of $37,495, the 2021 Bolt EV offers superior performance, better acceleration figures, range, and a decent list of standard features. Along with that, it is also a fairly comfortable daily driver. However, the 2021 Bolt EV feels quite overpriced in comparison to the 2021 Ioniq Electric. The 2021 Ioniq Electric's Limited trim is also filled to the brim with all the interior, infotainment, and safety features, making it a more value for money proposition of the segment.
The 2021 Nissan Leaf is one of the best-selling electric hatchbacks of the segment. It is also the cheapest of the lot, coming in at a base selling price of $31,670. Even though it is cheaper than the 2021 Ioniq Electric, it is by no means a mediocre car, as it turned out to be better in terms of performance, interior space, and trunk capacity on offer. However, we would recommend you to go with the 2021 Ioniq Electric as it offers a better range, more equipment and features, and a sorted ride and handling.
Based on the same platform as the 2021 Hyundai Ioniq Electric, the 2021 Kia Niro EV is available for sale at a base MSRP of $39,090 and comes with a more spacious interior, superior acceleration and performance numbers, and the versatility of an SUV. It also offers more customization and personalization options, which are sorely missed out on the 2021 Ioniq Electric. However, the 2021 Niro EV is quite expensive in comparison, making it a less value for money offering of the segment. The interior features and driver-assistance tech list are not as long as the 2021 Ioniq Electric too.
The 2021 Hyundai Ioniq Electric is an impressive fully-electric compact hatchback on sale in the United States. Available for a base MSRP of $33,245, the 2021 Ioniq Electric turned out to be one of the best of the lot, mainly due to the excellent interior space and refinement, long list of features on offer, and many standard driver-assistance techs on board. The range is also quite decent for the segment. Hence, if you are alright with the mediocre acceleration and performance on offer, the 2021 Ioniq Electric ticks most of the boxes of a comfortable daily driver.
