With major changes from the outgoing 2020 model, especially to the features and design on offer, the Discovery is also one of the best luxurious off-roaders of the segment. this SUV comes with the 2L turbocharged inline-4 motor putting out 296 hp and gets a 4WD drivetrain as well. This helps the car to tow 6,613 lbs. It can do the 0-60 mph in 6.7 secs too.

Available for sale at a base MSRP of $53,900, the 2021 Discovery comes with a single trim configuration, which is powered by the 2L turbocharged inline-4 motor mated to the 8-speed automatic transmission, putting out 296 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque. Along with the regular 2021 Discovery, Land Rover has also offered the R-Dynamic variant, which gets the more powerful 3L turbocharged inline-6 motor putting out 355 hp. Many more features are also offered as standard with the R-Dynamic variant.
Coming for a base lease price of $716/month, the 2021 discovery also gets many more updates, especially to the interior. It now comes with the 11.4" PIVI Pro infotainment system. A head-up display and 12.3" digital gauge cluster are also on board, along with the updated rear seat, all of which add to the comfort and convenience of the passengers. Coming with some major changes from the outgoing 2020 model, can this mid-size luxury SUV come out as the best of the lot, in comparison to the likes of the 2021 Mercedes Benz GLE, 2021 BMW X5, and the 2021 Audi Q7? We will find the answer in this in-depth review.
The 2021 Land Rover Discovery, which is offered for a base MSRP of $53,900, comes in a single trim configuration only. Even though this offering turned out to be decently value-for-money, we would opt for the more expensive Discovery R-Dynamic variant, as it gets many exterior features like LED taillights, aluminum interior accents, updated front & rear bumpers, and many more. You could also opt for the more powerful 3L inline-6 motor for an additional MSRP of $5,500.

Land Rover has given the Discovery a fairly thorough refresh for 2021 that includes two new turbocharged engines - Caranddriver
The 2021 Land Rover Discovery comes in a single trim configuration and is offered for sale at a base MSRP of $53,900. Coming with some major changes from the outgoing 2020 model, the base 2L turbocharged inline-4 motor producing 296 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque is a new addition to the lineup. However, the 8-speed automatic transmission and the full-time 4WD drivetrain remain unchanged. When it comes to the exterior design, the 2021 Discovery received minor tweaks to the front fascia. However, the LED headlights with LED DRLs, 20" alloy wheels wrapped in P255/55WR20 tires, powered tailgate, and 12 exterior colors are taken from the outgoing 2020 model.
The interior is where the 2021 Land Rover Discovery sees the most changes. It now comes with the 11.4" touchscreen PIVI Pro infotainment system along with a new 12.3" digital gauge cluster. The rear seat is also updated by adding more cushioning, making it more comfortable. The updated gear lever and minor changes to the dashboard also add to the luxury and opulence on offer. However, safety is one section that hasn't seen an update, as it carries forward all the safety and driver-assistance features like lane departure warning, lane-keeping assist, blindspot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert system, etc. However, most of these features are optional extras.

The engine makes a respectable amount of power, but the standard D driving mode is slow to downshift when you want more power. - Edmunds
The 2021 Land Rover Discovery comes with a single powertrain, which is a 2L turbocharged inline-4 motor mated to the ZF sourced 8-speed automatic transmission. This powertrain manages to give out 296 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque. The 2021 Discovery also gets the coveted full-time 4WD drivetrain, making it an excellent proposition in the off-roads. Multiple transmission modes and manual shifting with paddle shifter are on board as well. All of this helps the car to give out a maximum towing capacity of 6,613 lbs.
The 2021 Land Rover Discovery, which is available for a base MSRP of $53,900, also gets the adaptive air suspension, which was not available in the outgoing 2020 model. This helps the car to give out flat ride quality, absorbing all the bumps and potholes irrespective of the speed you travel. As a result, the 2021 Discovery turned out to be supremely comfortable at city speeds as well as during hardcore off-roading. However, the handling is not its forte. The vague and light steering setup coupled with a high body roll and understeer makes it not as impressive as the rivals like the 2021 BMW X5 and the 2021 Audi Q7.
The 2021 Land Rover Discovery with the 2L turbocharged motor under the hood managed to give out a 0-60 mph time of 6.7 seconds. It can also do the quarter-mile run in 16.1 seconds. The top speed of 130 MPH is on par with the rivals as well. With 13.8" front and rear rotors coupled with many braking features like ABS with EBD, brake assist, automated emergency braking system, etc as standard, the car manages to give out a 60-0 mph time of 120 feet. However, the more powerful 3L turbocharged inline-6 motor present in the 2021 Discovery R-Dynamic does punch out even better 0-60 mph time and quarter-mile time.

The 2021 Land Rover Discovery turned out to be the cheapest offering of the segment. However, it still managed to punch out superior performance numbers in comparison to the 2021 Audi Q7 and the 2021 Mercedes Benz GLE. The 3L turbocharged inline-6 motor in the 2021 X5 gave out the best in class 335 hp and 330 lb-ft of torque. It also gave out the best in class 0-60 mph time of 5.3 seconds. Both the 2021 Discovery and the 2021 2021 GLE gave out a similar 0-60 mph time of 6.7 seconds and 6.6 seconds, respectively. However, the 2021 Q7 turned out to be the worst of the lot, with a 0-60 mph time of 7.2 seconds.
The EPA estimates that the turbocharged four-cylinder model will deliver 19 mpg city and 22 mpg highway. - Carbuzz
Fuel economy is not the forte of the 2021 Land Rover Discovery. Even though the car comes with a smaller 2L turbocharged inline-4 motor, it still turned out to be a disappointment in terms of fuel economy, as it returned just 19 MPG in the city and 22 MPG on the highway. The combined gas mileage of 21 MPG is not the best of the segment.
However, the saving grace of the 2021 Land Rover Discovery, which is offered for sale at a base MSRP of $53,900, is the large 23.5-gallon fuel tank capacity. This helps the car to give out a city range of 446.5 miles, a highway range of 517 miles, and a combined range of 493.5 miles. In comparison, the more expensive and powerful Discovery R-Dynamic variant managed to give out a similar 21 MPG combined.

The 2021 Mercedes Benz GLE managed to churn out a slightly superior combined gas mileage of 22 MPG. However, the most powerful 2021 BMW X5 turned out to be the best of the lot in the fuel efficiency front as well, as it gave out a combined 23 MPG of gas mileage.
The interior has plenty of leather, shiny black trim and some very nice open-pore wood. - Cnet
Offered in 3 interior colors, namely acorn, ebony, and light oyster, the 2021 Land Rover Discovery sees the most changes here. This interior comes wrapped in premium leather with aluminum trims and wooden inlays and all this helps the cabin of the 2021 Discovery to be quite opulent and classy. The ergonomic design of the interior was excellent, as everything falls into place quite well, especially for the driver. Many features like an automatic climate control system, heated and powered seats, leather upholstery, panoramic sunroof, etc are offered as standard too. Being a 7-seater mid-size SUV, the 2021 Discovery is also quite a versatile offering of the segment.
The front row of the 2021 Discovery turned out to be the most spacious of the segment, due to the excellent shoulder room and legroom. The SUV also offered an impressive second-row comfort, as the great headroom and shoulder room makes it a comfortable place to be in. The soft cushioning coupled with excellent under-thigh and lower back support are also a boon. However, the third row was the best fit for kids, as the poor under-thigh support coupled with mediocre shoulder room and legroom makes it difficult for adults to be comfortable. The 9.1 cu ft of cargo capacity offered by the  Discovery is the worst of the lot too.

The 2021 Land Rover Discovery and the 2021 Audi Q7 are the only offerings of the segment which come with the 3rd row as standard. The 2021 GLE can opt with the third row as well. However, the 2021 BMW X5 misses it completely. Even though the first two rows of the Discovery to be quite comfortable, the third row was pretty terrible. All the rivals of the segment also gave out similar interior space. When it comes to the cargo space, the 2021 X5 leads the chart, which is followed by the 2021 GLE and the 2021 Q7. The entertainment duties of the 2021 Discovery are managed by the 11.4" PIVI Pro infotainment system and an 8-speaker audio system.
This infotainment system replaces the aging InControl Touch Pro infotainment system and hence it irons out most of the issues with the old unit. However, this system was still below the ones offered with the competitors like the 2021 X5 and the 2021 GLE, as it does offer lags and stutters, bogging down the experience. Nevertheless, it offers all the connectivity features like Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, Wi-Fi hotspot, Bluetooth, USB, AUX, and many more as standard. The audio experience through the 8-speaker Land Rover audio system is quite impressive too. Some of the interior and infotainment features on offer with the 2021 discovery are:
It provides a much more upscaled exterior vibe to accompany its impressive off-road capability. - Caranddriver
The 2021 Land Rover Discovery, which is available for a base MSRP of $53,900, sees only minor updates to the exterior in comparison to the outgoing 2020 model. Offered in 12 exterior colors, this 2021 iteration sees an updated front fascia due to the tweaked bumper on offer. The front view is also highlighted by the automatic LED headlights with LED DRLs, macho-looking bumpers with silver skid plate and blacked-out cladding, and the mesh grille. The curb weight of 4,751 lbs is in line with the rest of the rivals too, which helps in punching out decent acceleration numbers.
The side view of the 2021 Land Rover Discovery is highlighted by the subtle fender flares which get the 20" alloy wheels wrapped in P255/55WR20 tires, blacked-out pillars, sweeping taillights, and the massive window area. The rear section of the 2021 Discovery comes with the new LED taillight, integrated roof spoiler, shark fin antenna, and the powered tailgate with the side-aligned plate slot. The massive height of 73" and the width of 81.6" also add to the character of the SUV. This helps in providing excellent interior space as well.

The 2021 Land Rover Discovery looks and feels like a proper butch full-size SUV. The exterior dimensions make it one of the biggest of the segment too. However, the 2021 BMW X5 offered the best in class length and height. The ground clearance of 8.7" makes it more versatile as well. In comparison, the 2021 Mercedes Benz GLE gave out the worst ground clearance of the lot, which is about 1.7" lesser than the 2021 Discovery. The 2021 Audi Q7 offered a superior length and wheelbase. Some of the exterior features on offer with the 2021 Discovery:
As with most luxury vehicles, advanced safety features are almost all optional, but all the latest and greatest aids are available here. - Edmunds
The 2021 Land Rover Discovery hasn’t been crash-tested by the NHTSA or IIHS yet. Even the outgoing 2020 model has also not been crash-tested by the coveted testing organizations. However, with the tough build quality coupled with decent features list on offer, we expect it to perform quite well in the crash test.
Along with the excellent build quality on offer, the 2021 Land Rover Discovery, which is offered for sale at a base MSRP of $53,900, also comes with a long list of standard safety and driver assistance features. Many optional features are offered as well, all of which make it a safe daily driver SUV. Some of these features are:
The 2021 BMW X5, which is available for a base MSRP of $59,400, turned out to be the most powerful and fun-to-drive offering of the mid-size luxury SUV segment. The 2021 X5 also comes with a more refined and luxurious interior, has slightly better interior features, and the cargo capacity turned out to be one of the best of the lot too. However, the 2021 Discovery offers a more plaint ride quality, has better customization options, and turned out to be much cheaper than the 2021 X5.
The 2021 Audi Q7 also trumps the 2021 Discovery in many areas. Even though it is not as comfortable and off-road worthy as the Discovery, it turned out to be quite comfortable, spacious, and much more luxurious than the 2021 Discovery. The cargo capacity is better too. However, the performance and acceleration on offer from the Q7 are quite mediocre. The base price of $57,200 makes it more expensive than the 2021 Discovery as well.
The 2021 Mercedes Benz GLE is now available for sale at a base MSRP of $57,250 and this mid-size luxury SUV ticks most of the boxes for a comfortable daily driver. It offers a spacious cabin, the best in class cargo capacity, all the safety and driver-assistance features as standard, and looks modern too. Even though it is more expensive than Discovery, it is also filled with more features and equipment as well. However, the 2021 Discovery turned out to be superior in towing capacity, off-road performance, and ride quality on offer.
Available for sale at a base MSRP of $53,900, the 2021 Land Rover Discovery turned out to be an impressive proposition of the mid-size luxury SUV segment, due to the punchy powertrain, decent acceleration, and adequately spacious cabin. The interior quality and refinement are up there with the Germans as well. Hence, if you are alright with the mediocre gas mileage, lack of many standard driver-assistance features, and mediocre cargo space and third-row space on offer, the 2021 Discovery should not be missed out.
