2021 Land Rover Range Rover Review

Pros

  • Impressive performance
  • Unmatched on-road presence
  • Refined and luxurious cabin
  • Highly feature-loaded and customizable interior

Cons

  • Absence of 3rd Row seat
  • Rough ride quality over some surfaces
  • Hefty price tag

The 2021 Land Rover Range Rover carries over unchanged from its predecessor and starts at an MSRP of $92,000. However, three new Special edition models: Fifty Edition, Westminster Edition and Dynamic Black Edition debut for 2021. No mechanical enhancements though but the new special edition models bring in some unique exterior and interior touches, exclusive wheels and some fancy badging.

Overview

Before a thoroughly revised fifth-gen 2022 Range Rover debuts next year, the 2021 Land Rover Range Rover remains unchanged from its predecessor. However, for 2021, Land Rover has introduced three special edition Range Rovers to choose from; Fifty Edition, Westminster Edition and the Dynamic Black Edition. Mechanically unaltered, the three new special edition models are highlighted by some unique exterior and interior tweaks, exclusive wheels and some fancy badging. Apart from the three new models, everything else remains the same as the 2020 Range Rover.

Available in seven different trims, the 2021 Land Rover Range Rover starts at an MSRP of $92,000 excluding the $1,350 destination charges. Based on your budget and driving preferences, you can also get a Range Rover Evoque, Range Rover Velar or the Range Rover Sport and each one of them will make heads turn. However, it's the standard full-fledged Range Rover which best defines British luxury and stands as the epitome of Land Rover’s craftsmanship. With a similar presentation though, the likes of BMW X7, Lexus LX 570 and Cadillac Escalade give it a good competition.

Pricing and Features
8.0/10

Fine leather, real wood trim, plush carpets, and a host of convenient features deck out every one of the Range Rover's many trims.- Car and Driver

The 2021 Range Rover is a luxury SUV that is available in a total of seven different trims. However, since the higher six trims have a different and unique composition and are reviewed separately, the base P360 model is left out as a single trim. That being said, the 2021 Land Rover Range Rover P360 starts at an MSRP of $92,000 and comes with a 3.0-liter inline-6 and standard AWD.

Since the 2021 Range Rover doesn't get any major change over its predecessor, its specs, features and 30 available color options remain the same as 2020. The exterior design and features also remain unchanged and come in the 30 exterior color options. In terms of creature comforts and driver-assistance tech, the P360 comes loaded to the hilt and allows you to also choose from a bunch of available options.

Buying Advice

Since we are just talking about the base P360 trim, there is not much to choose from. However, we would highly recommend opting for the Driver Assist Package, which is available for an additional $4,790. It offers many driver-assistance features like blind spot assist, surround-view camera system, clear exit monitor, driver conditioning monitor, and other advanced systems that add more value to the car.

Engine and Performance
7.9/10

"Quick in any form, the Range Rover is perhaps most impressive for its ability to balance on-road comfort with off-road supremacy". - The Car Connection

The 2021 Range Rover is a full-size luxury SUV that comes with no changes to the mechanicals over the 2020 model. Retaining the same 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-6 motor with the mild-hybrid system, it puts out 355 hp and 365 lb-ft of torque. One can also opt for the 3.0-liter turbocharged V6 diesel engine that produces 254 hp and 443 lb-ft. Both these engines come mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission with the 4WD drivetrain.

Power delivery is smooth, while the mild-hybrid system does well to cover up the turbo lag. The transmission is precise and shifts are smooth as well. The standard air suspension setup delivers an impressive ride quality and bsorbs most of the irregularities on the road with ease. The result is a composed and soft ride quality, but larger bumps tend to make the car feel floaty. The steering is light and offers a decent feel and feedback, but also tends to understeer.

Although the Range Rover's standard engine is not as powerful as the Lincoln Navigator or Cadillac Escalde, its lively inline-6 motor does like to rev. 0-60 MPH comes up in 7.0 seconds which is not the quickest in the lot here, but very acceptable considering its overall character. Spirited buyers would be more interested in something like the 2021 range Rover Westminster Edition which clocks from 0-60 MPh in just 5.9 seconds.

Amongst all the cars present here, the Range Rover is the most capable one if you want to venture into the unknown. The Lexus LX 570 and BMW X7 are more focused on being luxurious SUVs while the Lincoln and Cadillac SUVs offer more grunt under their hood. This also converts into quicker performance times on the Navigator and Escalade, whereas the Lexus is the slowest. Interestingly, the Ranger Rover also has the best towing capacity among the pack here.

Fuel Economy
9.0/10

"Of the Range Rover's three gasoline powertrains, only one approaches genuine efficiency, and that's the diesel." - Car and Driver

The 2021 Range Rover has an unchanged powertrain and the mild-hybrid powertrain does a commendable job in terms of EPA ratings. It returns handsome efficiency figures of 23 MPG on the highways and 18 MPG for the city and 20 MPG combined fuel economy. Add to that the inclusion of a massive 27.5-gallon fuel tank and the 2021 Range Rover offers a very impressive 600 plus miles of range on a single tank of gas while cruising on the highways.

The Lexus LX 570 buyers will clearly have to pay the gas guzzler tax as it consumes fuel like a thirsty camel out in the desert. Even with a large gas tank capacity, the LX 570 struggles to offer a decent driving range. While both the Escalade and Navigator have similar fuel efficiency, the BMW X7 manages to even surpass the Range Rover by a tiny margin. That said, it employs a smaller gas tank which does compromise the range offered.

Interior
6.9/10

"The 2021 Range Rover is a fine luxury SUV, which welcomes you with its library-quiet interiors, top-notch cabin materials and generous seating space for five." - cars.usnews.com

Step into the cabin of the 2021 Range Rover and you would not see any major changes to the design front. Coming with the same 3 interior colors options of the outgoing 2020 model, namely ebony, espresso, or almond, the 2021 Range Rover turns out to be quite opulent. There is plenty of leather everywhere along with chrome, wood, and aluminum accents. Many other customization options for headlining, finisher, steering wheel, etc can also be done to personalize your ride.

Despite being a 5-seater, it isn't the most spacious, but luxuries are plentiful. This premium SUV also comes with all the bells and whistles as standard and one can opt for a gazillion other optional features like massaging seats and quad-zone climate control. There are also 10 different leather color combinations, all specced to your tastes. The 31.8 cu-ft of trunk space that can be extended to 68.6 cu-ft by the press of a button, might seem enough, but is the smallest for the segment.

There is no compromise in terms of cabin and trunk space in the Lincoln Navigator and the Cadillac Escalade. Both offer much more legroom and headroom for both the front and rear row of seats and also have a pretty spacious third row as well. The X7 too has the third row of seats but it does not feel as spacious as the Range Rover. All offer a much larger cargo area as well but the 10" InControl Touch Pro Duo infotainment system on offer in the 2021 Range Rover is where things get interesting.

While the dual-screen setup of the infotainment screen and HVAC controls lower down look rather appealing and modern, it isn't the most intuitive interface out there. The menus aren't logically designed and the small icons make it difficult to navigate while on the move. The standard Meridian audio system sound absolutely great and the system comes loaded with navigation, satellite & HD radio, and an optional rear-seat entertainment package.

Key Interior Features

  • Heated and powered seats w/Leather upholstery

  • 10-inch InControl Touch Pro Duo infotainment system w/13-speaker 380W Meridian audio system

Exterior
9.0/10

"It's not the newest high-end luxury SUV, but the Range Rover's attractive styling and appeal have mostly withstood the test of time." - Motortrend

The Range Rover has always been a handsome-looking full-size luxury SUV, mainly due to the boxy design language and the quintessential British styling, adding to the character of this SUV. The front view of the 2021 Range Rover stands out due to the automatic LED headlights with LED DRLs, chrome wrapped grille, massive Range Rover embossing on the hood, and the decently sized air dam and skid plate.

The side view of the 2021 Range Rover stands out due to the massive 19-inch 5 split-spoke alloy wheels, silver accents of the doors, and the masculine character line that starts from the fender and goes all the way to the rear quarter joining the taillight. Available in more than 30 exterior colors, the 2021 Range Rover offers immense customization options. Buyers can completely revamp everything from wheels and roof options to even the brake caliper color.

The lack of cabin and trunk space inside the 2021 Range Rover is due to its smaller exterior dimensions. Therefore it is the lightest one in this comparison, however, all the rivals are larger in dimensions and hence weigh considerably more. The ground clearance was also better for both the BMW X7 and the Navigator. The Cadillac Escalade rides lowest to the ground but is massive in dimensions and yet keeps its weight in check.

Safety
8.0/10

"As standard, the Range Rover gets park sensors, a rearview camera, low-speed forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking and lane-departure warning." - Carbuzz

The 2021 Range Rover comes with no changes to the safety front and hence carries forward all the safety features. The build quality also sees no changes. The Range Rover uses an all-aluminum monocoque body that makes it rigid and strong while being light at the same time. In terms of safety tests, both the NHTSA and IIHS haven't crash-tested the 2021 Range Rover yet.

The 2021 Range Rover comes with a long list of standard and optional safety and driver-assistance features like Terrain Response Electronic Stability Control, side-impact beams, and many more. There are also many optional packages, which further adds many more features too. Some of these features are mentioned below:

Key Safety Features:

  • Automated Emergency Braking and Forward Collision Warning
  • Lane Departure Warning

2021 Land Rover Range Rover vs 2021 BMW X7

The BMW X7 is the more affordable one of the two and while it is the quicker one here, the Range Rover offers impressive off-road capabilities and towing capacity that is far better than the BMW. Both SUVs are pretty efficient and are also almost equally spacious. The third row of seats in the X7 does eat into the second-row legroom, and the cargo space is also better in the Land Rover. Unless you wish to tow a large boat or go adventure driving, the BMW X7 offers more value for money.

2021 Land Rover Range Rover vs 2021 Lexus LX 570

The 2021 Lexus LX 570 is a full-size luxury SUV that is available at a similar price and comes with better reliability, a slightly more spacious interior, and a third-row seat. The performance and the acceleration on offer from the 2021 LX 570 are also on par with that of the 2021 Range Rover. However, the 2021 Range Rover is more opulent, offers more bells and whistles, and comes with many customization options too. As a result, the Range Range is the preferred choice between the two.

2021 Land Rover Range Rover vs 2021 Lincoln Navigator

The 2021 Lincoln Navigator offers an equilibrium of performance and comfort even in its base form. This luxury SUV also offers all the relevant interior features as standard, many of which are optional on the 2021 Range Rover. The performance and acceleration from the twin-turbo V6 motor are also better than the Range Rover. Though the 2021 Range Rover offers more customization options and is also slightly better put-together than the 2021 Navigator, the latter offers more value for money.

Land Rover Range Rover Vs 2021 Cadillac Escalade

The 2021 Cadillac Escalade is a typical American luxury SUV that is more powerful, has better performance, and offers a more spacious interior. Available for a lower price, the features on offer seem to be as impressive as the Range Rover. However, the interior quality and customization options are nowhere close to what is offered by the 2021 Range Rover. Therefore, if you don't mind missing out on the exuberance of the Range Rover, the Escalade might be a big-time money saver for you.

Final Verdict
9.0/10

Like the outgoing 2020 model, the 2021 Range Rover turned out to be one of the most opulent luxury full-size SUVs of the segment. Offered for sale at a base MSRP of $92,000, this SUV comes with a luxurious and feature-packed interior, impeccable customization options, and a punchy powertrain. The gas mileage is amongst the best of the lot too and with the amount of attention it grabs on the road, it feels worth the high asking price.
