2021 Mclaren 720s Review

Pros

  • Mind-numbing acceleration
  • Comfortable ride for everyday use
  • Excellent handling

Cons

  • Firm brake pedal
  • Lack of interior cargo space
  • High running costs

The McLaren 720s is not only a jaw-dropping supercar when it comes to its looks but also when it comes to performance. As it improves over the 650s it uses carbon monocoque very prudently to offer space-age technology and blistering fast acceleration. As the car is relatively new, McLaren has decided to carry over the 2020 720s model for the 2021 model year as well.

Overview

The 2021 McLaren 720S is now on sale in the US with prices starting at an MSRP of $301,500. It continues to come with the same setup from the 2020 model year with no changes, as the specs are impressive when it comes to performance. The McLaren 720S is powered by a 4.0L twin-turbocharged V8 engine which makes 710 hp, does 0-60 in 2.8 seconds, and will achieve a top speed of 212 mph.

If you seek a 720S with more wind through your hair and comes with similar performance, available is the McLaren 720S Spider priced at an MSRP 317,500. That said the McLaren 720S comes into competition with the Lamborghini Aventador SVJ, Ferrari 812 Superfast, and the Aston Martin DBS Superleggera.

Buying Advice

At an MSRP of $313,630, we recommend getting the McLaren 720S in the Luxury trim. It comes with comfort features like power-adjustable heated seats and quality finishes like Nappa leather. We also recommend getting the interior carbon fiber packs for those unique carbon elements and also the exterior carbon packs. We say the Luxury trim because the engine and performance are the same in all three trims, its best to make it comfortable in case you take it out for a leisure drive. Along, with this we recommend getting its extended warranty as well, for that extra peace of mind.

The 2021 McLaren 720S looks like a spaceship with its aerodynamically optimized body shape features McLaren's signature dihedral doors, 19-inch wheels, which can be changed in designs to your liking. There is also an active rear spoiler that integrates seamlessly into the body and the engine area on the Premium and Luxury trim comes with its own ambient lighting.

There are many paint options to pick from and fall in categories of elite, special and MSO defined. The brake caliper too can be customized. Additionally, there are exterior packs - 3 carbon fiber packs, MSO defined packs, track packs (includes all lightweight materials), and many more, but it will cost a lot too.

Safety
6.0/10

The IIHS and the NHTSA, have not yet crash-tested the 2021 McLaren 720S and probably will not as well, mainly due to its low production numbers and its $301,500 MSRP. That said, McLaren has given it safety features fitted standard which are focused to keep the occupants safe.

The safety features include front head restraints, dual front impact airbags, and knee Airbags, break-resistant glass, electronic stability control, anti-roll stability control, traction control, tire pressure monitoring system, safety belts with pretensioners, and more. There is also the option to include front and rear park sensors, front lift system, and 360° park assist

2021 McLaren 720s vs 2021 Ferrari 812 Superfast

Ferrari 812 Superfast is said to have one of the world's most powerful naturally aspirated engines and it produces more output than the 720s. Both are almost equally racy and have similar timings, missing each other by an inch or so. However, the 812 Superfast is a bit more practical as well with trunk space than the McLaren 720S.

2021 McLaren 720s vs 2021 Aston Martin DBS Superleggera

The Aston Martin DBS Superleggera is the closest price and is closest in engine output and fuel economy as well. However, note that while 720s is more on the sporty side, Aston is less stiff and has smoother ride quality if you expect your dream car to also be your daily car. But we like the 720s more. It has that unstoppable attitude which is darn attractive!

2021 McLaren 720s vs 2021 Lamborghini Aventador SVJ

The McLaren 720s offers slightly lesser than the Lamborghini Aventador SVJ with a smaller engine, offer nearly twice the fuel economy and perform the same as the SVJ, and also comes with more space. Moreover, the price gap is huge! Lamborghini’s sticker price is nearly $150,000 more than the McLaren 720S.

Final Verdict

While it's eye-catchy on the outside, it is classy on the inside too but in case more luxury is what you are seeking opt for Luxury trim. The 2021 McLaren 720S does perform slightly better than the competition and also cost a lot less than it too, making it one of the best options for its $301,500 price tag.
