About 2021 Mercedes-Benz G-Class

3.5

Overall Rating

The Mercedes Benz G-Class has stood in the vanguard of mighty and majestic SUVs with a flair for luxury for a long time now. It carries a 4.0L Bi-Turbo V8 in conjunction with a 9-speed automatic transmission under its long and wide hood which is capable of putting 416 hp and 450 lb-ft of torque on all the wheels.

The iconic G-Class was redesigned in 2019, and the 2021 model year is only taking that legacy forward in its subtle way. Retaining all the cues from the previous year with minor revisions, the G-Class now adds cosmetic upgrades for better designing and a standardized 12.3-inch infotainment screen. Apart from that, it remains a luxurious off-roader that with its cogent engine option can leave you grinning from ear to ear when you sprint through the streets.

The Mercedes-Benz G-Class is an apt family hauler and vaunts a capacious cabin that can seat five passengers without the slightest of difficulties. At $131,750, the G-Class is available as a single trim offering only and is packed with abundant features one would need for a practical and unparalleled driving and riding experience. However, if you long for an athletic experience from an SUV, the AMG G63 could be your choice of vehicle. The 2017 Mercedes-Benz G550 competes with the likes of the BMW X7, Land Rover Defender, and Toyota Land Cruiser.

Though the Mercedes Benz G-Class offers a lot as standard, there is still room open for more. We recommend you pick up the G550 with the AMG Line and the G manufaktur Interior Package Plus which makes sure that your G-Wagon will stand out from the crowd and also be immensely comfortable like your living room at just $14,300 extra. Further, if you want to offset some costs of ownership, you can also pick up the maintenance plan for 4-years and the extended warranty.

"The G-Class is a surprising on- and off-road performer." - Thecarconnection.com

The 2021 G-wagon comes with a very potent and powerful 4.0L Bi-turbo V8 engine that is paired to an obedient and smooth 9G-TRONIC 9-speed Automatic transmission. This transmission delivers 416 hp and 450 lb-ft of torque to all the wheels as standard. The powertrain of the 2021 G-Class is exquisite in its built and performance and reflects the bespoke engineering one tends to find in Mercedes-Benz vehicles.

In comparison with the segment, the Toyota Land Cruiser is the only other vehicle that makes use of a V8 engine setup, while the BMW X7 and Land Rover Defender P110 X-Dynamic SE are equipped with an inline-6 unit. All three SUVs in the segment are channeled to an 8-speed automatic transmission and are all-wheel-drive variants. While the 2021 Mercedes-Benz G550 is the most powerful SUV in the lot, all other SUVs manage comparable outputs, however, the BMW X7 does feel a tad bit underwhelming.

2017 Mercedes-Benz G-Class Acceleration

Getting a 4x4 is not particularly a very agile experience, but it sure is a fulfilling one when you want to juice the hell out of it. The 2021 Mercedes-Benz G-Class despite its size can sprint from 0-60 mph in a mere 5.1 seconds. The quarter-mile also comes up pretty quickly in 12.6 seconds. If there is something that Mercedes can teach many others, it's how to use a small powertrain to produce insane performance.

Despite the lowest outputs in the segment, the BMW X7 performs rather surprisingly and can sprint from 0-60mph in just 5.8 seconds, while the bulky and muscular Land Cruiser is an entire second slower. In the quarter-mile run, it's a similar state of affairs with the BMW and Toyota managing 14.4 and 15.1 seconds respectively. Unfortunately, the Land Rover Defender's performance data is not yet known, but with its smaller proportions and a balanced powertrain setup, the SUV is expected to perform impressively.

2021 Mercedes-Benz G-Class Ride and Handling

The 2021 Mercedes-Benz G-Class is an absolutely versatile vehicle; one that fits perfectly into both on- and off-road adventures. The shifts are buttery smooth and you will not feel like you are driving a giant SUV since it possesses driving dynamics similar to a nimble sedan or hot hatch. The steering wheel is perfectly weighted and allows great maneuvering in all conditions as well. Whether you want to get handsy with it or sit in the rear seat, the ride packs the punch to excite you in both cases. The only visible drawback we see in its ride and handling is that the steering system does have a detached feel to it sometimes.

2021 Mercedes-Benz G-Class Braking

The 2021 Mercedes-Benz G-Class makes use of 4-wheel ABS and a 4-wheel disc brake system. It comes equipped with a 13.9-inch brake for the front wheels and 13.6-inch for the rear wheels. The G550 covers a considerable ground before coming to a halt after it starts decelerating from the 60mph mark. Its braking distance is measured at 175ft, which is shorter than its rivals yet long enough.

Fuel Economy
6.0/10

For those buying the G-Class, worries about fuel economy are probably the last thought on their mind. They are after the feel that this ride affords. However, if you are still curious, it can offer 17 MPG in the city, 19 MPG on the highway, and 18 MPG combined. Add to that the largest fuel tank amongst its competition at 26.4 gallons, and you get a mileage of 449 and 502 miles in the city and on the highway.

In terms of range, the Mercedes-Benz G-Class gains categorized dominance, however, the Land Rover and BMW remain eerily close, while the Toyota Land Cruiser lacks considerably behind.

Interior
6.5/10

"Luxurious materials such as soft leathers or wooden accents fill this SUV’s cabin. Everything looks and feels high-quality." -

The 2021 Mercedes-Benz G-Class carries the boxy vibe of the yester-era from the outside, but the interiors are far from it. The interiors of the ride are as luxurious as they can be at this price. The vehicle remains true to its German origins and is highly refined and depends very much on its practicality and utility than on its looks and attractiveness. The widescreen cockpit comes standard across trim levels with materials around the cabin being of top quality.

The seats of the SUV are comfortable and offer a lot of support but are a little high set. There is enough headspace for both the front and the rear seats and while driving you feel closer to the road which increases your confidence by leaps and bounds as you control a proper beast on the road and otherwise. Some drawbacks in the cabin of the G-class come in the form of the shorter door openings, and some ergonomic drawbacks due to the conventional box-like design.

There is a digital driver display as well that can change its outlook depending on the drive mode you are in; Classic, Sports, and Progressive. Additionally, you can add InTune Radio, Rear seat entertainment, and In-car wifi for some extra bucks if you find the existing system to be lacking in any way. Some of the highlights of the infotainment system are as follows:

"This character-filled off-roader finally justifies its price and is decent to drive on the road." - Motortrend.com

If you look at any Mercedes Benz G-Class, whether it is part of this generation or the previous one, you might find it very reminiscent of the old days when the SUVs looked like they were big enough to trample anything in their path. And for 2021, the vibe has been retained. It comes with intelligent round LED headlamps with LED DRLs and a massive chrome grille in the center. As you walk over to the back, the Stepney with the Mercedes-Benz star branded cover is present in full glory. The taillamps which used to be square are now rounded off slightly while the rear bumper is beefier.  Add to that the fact that it is the tallest, has the most ground clearance, and yet is the most compact in comparison to the rest, you will actually be left in awe by what the brand has managed to achieve

Also, the grille protector in the front has been redesigned for the second generation and is much sleeker and stylish. To carry over the vibe over all other aspects, the door hinges are big and exposed in the profile view to add more ruggedness. The door handles are manual and boring but for a purist, it just adds to the brashness and unapologetic rusty class of the G-Wagon. It may not be the largest vehicle by its dimensions and proportions, but the boxy SUV's height and ground clearance do give it an edge over its competitors when off-roading.

Competition
7.0/10

2021 Mercedes-Benz G-Class vs 2021 BMW X7

The BMW X7 is the newest kid on the block. It is huge yet calm and composed and has a spacious cabin. It is also backed by the best driver assistance tech on the planet. Luxurious, practical, and packing more seating capacity, the BMW X7 comes close to the G-wagon on account of its opulence and practicality. Technology and fuel efficiency along with a more powerful powertrain at a price lower than the G-Class tips the scales in favor of the Bimmer.

2021 Mercedes Benz G-Class vs 2021 Land Rover Defender P110 X-Dynamic SE

The 2021 Land Rover Defender P110 X-Dynamic SE does not even fall in the similar ballpark as the Mercedes-Benz G-Class when the price is concerned, however, it is a stiff competitor when performance, space, and practicality is concerned. Both SUVs, the Land Rover, and Mercedes-Benz are eerily similar to one other when efficiency and interior space are concerned and in the absence of the performance figures of the Defender, they rank rather similarly in our list. However, the G-Class has a rich history of performance, reliability, and dependability to support its abilities, which does give it an added advantage over its competitor.

2021 Mercedes-Benz G-Class vs 2021 Toyota Land Cruiser

The 2021 Toyota Land Cruiser has a similar amount of ruggedness in its built as the Mercedes-Benz G-Class, yet its muscularity does not convert into brute performance. While the Land Cruiser also uses a V8 engine, it is slower than the Mercedes-Benz in all aspects. Even its braking capabilities feel underwhelming in comparison and its fuel efficiency is outright disappointing. However, it does have comparable space on the inside and can make for a great off-roader without compromising on luxury. Though its price tag is lower than the G-Class, the Toyota Land Cruiser has a lot of areas to work on to stand head-on with the Mercedes-Benz.

Final Verdict

The Mercedes-Benz G-Class gets a new definition that sets the hopes soaring sky high. The rugged SUV is prepared for all challenges and is more than ready to rise to the occasion. The G-Wagon might be high priced, but it justifies every penny of it with unparalleled performance. It sports a capacious cabin that is heavily equipped and reflects the contemporary built of the vehicle. In addition, its safety and infotainment systems stand to impress and make the muscular SUV, a rather alluring proposition. The G-Class can handle itself very well both on the road and off it. A well-balanced package of powerful performance, spacious interior, and characteristic styling, it is ready for you if you are ready to dominate the roads.
