Even with the small, entry-level turbocharged 3-cylinder engine, it's a blast to drive- Autotrader
The 2021 Mini Cooper Convertible retains the small, punchy 1.5L turbocharged 3-cylinder engine that churns out 134 hp and 162 lb-ft. of peak torque. New for the 2021 model is the return of the slick 6-speed manual transmission. You can get a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic for $1,250. All this power is sent to the front wheels exclusively. There’s so much torque down low in the rev band that the driver can stick the hatch in one gear and cruise effortlessly.
You will really enjoy driving the 2021 Cooper Convertible. When you throw it around the corners, it's got that eagerness to change direction. It also has lovely agile handling with sharp and direct steering. Although, it does have a tendency to run a little wide off the mark if you're particularly hard into the corner. The ride is quite firm which actually suits the nature of a Mini Convertible. It's a trade-off you get for that fantastic handling.
The 2021 Cooper Convertible certainly won’t pin you back to your seat. With that said, it did well in our flat-out acceleration test. The 2021 Cooper Convertible took just 7.5 seconds to finish the 0-60 MPH run and can reach a top speed of 131 MPH. A quarter of a mile can be done in 15.8 seconds. The 2021 Cooper Convertible takes 134 feet to stop from 60-0 MPH when it comes to braking thanks to its ventilated disc brakes at all four corners.

The Mazda CX-5 Miata Convertible is easily the most powerful car here. However, in a surprise turn of events, the Fial 124 Spider is the one with the fastest performance stats despite making only 160 horsepower. The MX-5 Miata stands behind it in terms of performance. The Cooper Convertible is the slowest contender in this competition as it makes the lowest power.
While not the most fuel-efficient car, the Mini Convertible actually returns pretty decent gas mileage figures- Carbuzz
The 2021 Mini Cooper Convertible brings fun, with a lot of savings. Its engine is not only athletic but also has good fuel efficiency. The 2021 Cooper Convertible delivers an impressive 26 MPG in the city. 37 MPG on a highway and 30 MPG combined. The MPG figures are estimated by the EPA and mostly similar to the rivals.
Part of the reason why the Cooper Convertible returns good MPG numbers is the three-pot turbocharged engine under the hood. It delivers decent power without getting heavy on the pocket. The 2021 Copper Convertible is fitted with the smallest fuel tank in this segment which is 11.6 gallons. It covers a total combined distance of 348 miles in one tank of gas.

The Fiat 124 Spider delivers a class-leading driving range but its highway rating is slightly less than the Cooper Convertible. The Mazda MX-5 Miata's driving range is the least here while its combined mileage is 1 MPG less than the other two rivals. The Cooper Convertible's highway rating leads by 2 MPG.
For the most part, the Mini has excellent interior materials, using less hard plastic than competitors- Edmunds
The interior of the 2021 Mini Cooper Convertible is airy and has a stylish cabin layout. It seats up to four people in its decent and refined cabin. The cabin is flooded with the circular designed panels as a homage to the iconic Mini when carefully observed. The cabin invites the passengers with comfortably bolstered seats instead of regular ones. The seats have synthetic leather wrapping which can be upgraded to genuine leather for the ultimate luxurious experience.
The front row is welcoming for taller adults as passenger space is abundant. Even with the soft top on, it still fits in tall people comfortably. It's the opposite at the back. The rear seats are less comfortable for adults due to the fact of less legroom. It is best suitable for kids or keeping your stuff. The roof opens and folds away easily in just 18 seconds, while it is operable even while on the move with speed up to 18 MPH. The 5.7 cu-ft boot is quite less but big enough to fill for a family weekend trip.

Both the Mazda MX-5 Miata Convertible and the Fiat 124 Spider seats only two people. Both of them offer less headroom but legroom is the best. When it comes to cargo space, the MX-5 Miata offers a slightly better-designed boot with 4.9 cu-ft while the 124 Spider offers only 4.6 cu-ft. The 2021 Cooper Convertible retains the center circular infotainment panel which features a 6.5-inch display on the Classic and Signature trim and an 8.8-inch display on the Iconic trim. The 2021 model brings a digital instrument cluster as a standard fitment in the top-end Iconic trim and optional in the Signature trim.
The entertainment department is handled by a standard six-speaker audio system that works well for such a compact car. The Iconic trim upgrades it to a 12-speaker Harman Kardon premium audio system. The bigger infotainment display comes with a touchpad interface, which supports navigation technology and Apple CarPlay. Android Auto is not available in the 2021 Cooper Convertible. The system is certainly the best of the bunch as it is backed up by BMW’s slick iDrive system. Some other cool cabin features of the 2021 Cooper Convertible are:
Short overhangs and a low-to-the-ground stance make the 2021 Mini look as if it’s ready to rally even when parked- Kelly Blue Book
The 2021 Mini Cooper Convertible hits nostalgia hard with the iconic look that has remained one of the most recognizable designs in the world. The front fascia still includes the traditional oval-shaped headlamps with associated LED DRLs while the rear fits Union Jack-inspired LED taillights. The Mini Cooper Convertible gets a handsome and sporty stance with a shorter length but a taller height. It has definitely grown in size but it still feels relatively small when compared to other hatchbacks of the same segment. It stays true to its iconic image of a go-kart for the road.
The 2021 Cooper Convertible sits 4.5 inches above the ground, which gives it better stability with a bulbous body. Also, its wheelbase is the widest in its class, and therefore, the passengers will enjoy more in-cabin space. The 2021 Cooper Convertible gets 15-inch wheels as standard while 17-inch wheels are optional. The power soft-top takes 18 seconds for it to open or close at speeds up to 18 MPH. The additional racing stripes on the hood and center dual-exhaust pipes in the rear give it an attractive look that makes the Mini Cooper more than just a compact car.

The Mazda MX-5 Miata Convertible has the highest ground clearance here. It sits 0.4 inches higher than the Cooper Convertible. A high ground clearance helps to prevent the scraping of the underbelly caused by the high bumps on the road. At 159.6 inches, the Fiat 124 Spider is the longest car in this class. But both competitors share an equal wheelbase which is 7.3 inches less than the Cooper Convertible. Some other exterior features are:
Automatic emergency braking comes standard on the 2021 Mini Cooper- The Car Connection
Only IIHS has paid attention to the 2021 Mini Cooper Convertible and that too not completely. Only the headlights and front crash prevention parameters were rated by IIHS. The headlights received the lowest 'Poor' rating while the front crash prevention of the Cooper is 'Advanced' which is the second-highest rating. On the other hand, NHTSA completely neglected to crash-test the 2021 Cooper Convertible for its crashworthiness.
But Mini didn't leave anything behind to keep the Cooper away from safety. For added protection, a set of six airbags are installed in the 2021 Cooper Convertible's cabin. The driver-assist features available in this car are very less but they are enough to keep the passengers safe and away from accidents. Below are all the safety features available in the 2021 Cooper Convertible:
The Fiat 124 Spider's starting price is much less than the Cooper Convertible. Its four-pot engine makes 26 hp more than the Cooper and hence, its acceleration is better. Both the cars have similar MPG figures but the 124 Spider's range is the best in this competition. The area where it lacks is in the interior. It is a two-seater car and is short on cargo space. When it comes to safety, the 124 Spider lacks safety ratings and also comes with very few safety features.
The Mazda MX-5 Miata Convertible is slightly less expensive than the Cooper Convertible but houses the most powerful engine in this class. Therefore, it performs much better in both performance tests. Despite making more power, its MPG figures are almost the same as the Cooper Convertible. The MX-5 Miata also seats only two people and lacks headroom if the soft-top is closed. Moreover, its cargo space is the least here. It lacks safety ratings but offers more driver aids than the Cooper.
The 2021 Mini Cooper Convertible is a sporty-looking subcompact car that offers premium packaging at an affordable price tag. While the aesthetic appeal is very compelling, the agility and enhanced driving capabilities are achieved along with impressive fuel efficiency. Its premium interior also attracts many buyers for its unique design. Overall, the Mini Cooper Convertible is one of the best hot hatches you could add to your garage.
