About 2021 Mitsubishi Outlander

3.3

Overall Rating

The 2021 Mitsubishi Outlander is the last model of this generation. With the exact same specs, it is available for sale in 6 trims. The prices start from $24,895 and go up to $33,745 for the GT trim which gets a 3.0L V6 engine. The 2.4L I-4 engine is the standard for the other trims. The interior is outdated and has 10.3 cu-ft of cargo space. The Sport and PHEV models of the 2021 Outlander are separate. The 2022 Outlander is the next generation and has been teased already ahead of its release in mid-2021.

The 2021 Mitsubishi Outlander is the farewell model for this generation. It is already available for sale in 6 trims levels- ES, SE, LE, SP, SEL, and GT. The prices have also remained the same as 2020 and start from $24,895 for the ES trim. All of the trims from ES to SEL get a 162 hp producing 2.4L I-4 engine. It is hooked up to the RWD drivetrain as standard and AWD is available as optional. The GT trim with the more powerful 3.0L V6 can churn out 224 hp and comes with AWD as standard. The GT extracts a price of $33,745. All of the trims come with the same lackluster interior that packs 10.3 cu-ft of cargo space.

If you want to lease the 2021 Mitsubishi Outlander, the downpayment is $2,848. Post that, it's $299/month for 48 months to lease the ride. While the Mitsubishi Outlander is a pretty encompassing vehicle, it also has two other siblings. There is the Outlander Sport for a smaller seating capacity which starts at an MSRP of $20,995. If you want a "greener" alternative, there is the Outlander PHEV that demands $36,295. In the current avatar, the 2021 Outlander competes against the Honda CR-V, Subaru Forester, and Mazda CX-5.

Though all the trims of the 2021 Mitsubishi Outlander seem like great value for money options, two trims stand out. For a perfect value for money family car, the SE trim priced at $26,095 strikes the right chord. It offers some of the best safety features, along with a lot of creature comforts in the interior.

The other value for money option is the flagship GT trim which demands $33,745. Though this a 9 grand upgrade in the sticker price, you are also getting an upgrade in the powertrain. The driving character becomes more enthusiastic and the 2021 Outlander feels fun to drive in this avatar.

The prices have also remained the same as 2020 and start from $24,895 for the ES trim. All of the trims from ES to SEL get a 162 hp producing 2.4L I-4 engine. Pricing and Features
6.0/10

The Mitsubishi Outlander is one of just a few mainstream compact SUVs available with seating for up to seven.- MotorTrend

The 2021 Mitsubishi Outlander model is available in six different trims - ES 2.4, SE 2.4, LE 2.4, SP 2.4, SEL 2.4, and GT 3.0 S AWC. The prices start from $24,895 for the ES trim and climb to $33,745 for the GT trim. The ES trim offers the barebones of features and is worth giving a miss. The SE and LE trims are feature-packed and value for money offerings for $26,095 and $27,295 respectively. Though the price of the SP trim is higher than the SEL, the latter trim sits above the former in terms of features and luxury options.

The GT trim is the "flagship" offering with the best features fitted as standard fitment. The "2.4" in front of the name of all the trims from ES to SEL signifies the 162 hp producing 2.4L I-4 powertrain that they have. The GT trim gets the more powerful 3.0L V6 that produces 224 hp while being hooked up to an AWD as standard. Hence the GT trim bears the "3.0 S AWC" designation. For all the other trims, FWD is standard fitment while AWD can be had for $2,000 more.

Buying Advice

Though all the trims of the 2021 Mitsubishi Outlander seem like great value for money options, two trims stand out. For a perfect value for money family car, the SE trim priced at $26,095 strikes the right chord. It offers some of the best safety features, along with a lot of creature comforts in the interior.

The other value for money option is the flagship GT trim which demands $33,745. Though this a 9 grand upgrade in the sticker price, you are also getting an upgrade in the powertrain. The driving character becomes more enthusiastic and the 2021 Outlander feels fun to drive in this avatar.

Engine and Performance
5.0/10

It feels like an old-school 4x4.- Top Gear

All the trims from ES to SEL of the 2021 Mitsubishi Outlander are equipped with a 2.4L I-4 engine. This unit pumps out 166 hp and 162 lb-ft of torque which is clearly underpowered for a car that retails at 25 grand. The GT trim is the "powerful" sibling and gets a 3.0L V6 that churns out 224 hp and 215 lb-ft of torque. Each engine has a different transmission unit as well. While the I-4 gets a CVT, the V6 comes mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission. Furthermore, the standard drivetrain is an RWD while AWD can be picked up for $2,000 extra.

The GT trim comes with AWD as standard which seems like a good choice for the $33,745 it demands. The Mitsubishi Outlander Sport and PHEV share a 2.0L I-4 powertrain. The Outlander PHEV adds a hybrid unit and comes with a single-speed direct-drive transmission. The Sport comes with a CVT transmission as standard. Irrespective of whichever model of the 2021 Outlander you pick, the driving dynamics remain pretty much similar. The engine feels like it's overwhelmed and the steering wheel feels lifeless and muted at all times.

With the standard 2.4L I-4 unit, the 2021 Mitsubishi Outlander can complete the 0-60 mph in 9.2 seconds. The quarter-mile comes up in 16.3 seconds. While the ride prances forward in a jiffy, the engine starts grunting a lot after it hits the mid-revs. Add to that the fact that there is a CVT unit in place, and the experience is definitely going to be dulled down. To handle the athleticism of the ride, Mitsubishi has strapped on disc brakes as standard. These brakes can stop the ride from 60-0 mph in a braking distance of 121 feet.

Compared to the others, the standard unit of the Mitsubishi Outlander is underpowered. However, it does enough to help it procure the last spot on the podium in the 0-60 mph and second place in the quarter-mile. The Honda CR-V with the smallest engine is actually the most powerful, and the fastest in the quarter-mile. The Mazda CX-5 packs the fun-to-drive dynamics and takes the top spot in the 0-60 mph. The off-roader Subaru Forester takes the third place in engine specs that is upgraded to second in the 0-60 mph run.

Fuel Economy
7.9/10

With its base engine, The MPG figures are solid, if unspectacular, for the compact SUV class.- Cars.USNews

Despite being Japanese, the MPG figures of the 2021 Mitsubishi Outlander seem to be lower than the competition. The ride offers 25 MPG in the city, 30 MPG on the highway, and 27 MPG combined. The fuel tank capacity has been fixed at 16.6 gallons with the 2.4L I-4 engine. So, you get an overall combined range of 448 miles after a full refuel.

If you splurge and get the Outlander GT with the 3.0L V6, then the MPG figures drop. With this arrangement, you will now get 20 MPG in the city, 27 MPG on the highway, and 22 MPG combined. That is a straight 5 MPG drop across all parameters. If this was not enough, even the fuel tank capacity drops to 15.8 gallons. Now, you will get an overall combined range of 348 miles.

The Honda CR-V offers the best MPG figures and hence takes the top spot in this lineup. The Subaru Forester comes in next with a big fuel tank and great MPG figures. The Mazda CX-5 edges out the Mitsubishi Outlander with slightly better highway and combined MPG figures and procures the last place on the podium for itself.

Interior
5.2/10

The 2020 Mitsubishi Outlander is practical and comfortable but lacks the fit and finish of rivals.- The Car Connection

The current Mitsubishi has a simple interior with average material quality. Once you step inside the cabin, you find it doesn’t feel as well-structured as its rivals. Hence, this section requires the most noticeable changes which could upgrade the level of the car altogether. We expected that the 2021 Mitsubishi Outlander might come with a redesigned dashboard and upholstery, but in vain. The 2021 Mitsubishi Outlander offers a seating capacity for 7 passengers.

But the Plug-in hybrid model provides seating options for just 5 passengers due to the addition of a battery pack. The Outlander offers decent space at the front, and the second row is comfy, but the third row and cargo space of 10.3 cu-ft don’t fit the bill. It should be much more spacious. The leather-fitted tilt-steering wheel has a digital panel, including voice control. Inside the cabin, carbon fabric is present on the dashboard along with doors to give a sleek look.

Among the competition, the Mitsubishi Outlander offers the maximum seating capacity which causes the cargo-space to be the least. The Honda CR-V takes the cake with the most interior space and the biggest trunk in the back. The Mazda CX-5 is the most compactly built while the Forester is actually spacious. In terms of keeping you entertained, the brand offers two different systems. The first is a 7-inch screen that is in place in the base ES trim. From the SE trim itself, this is upgraded to an 8-inch touchscreen with navigation.

This system is responsive and fairly well balanced but feels dated for today's use. You get features like AM/FM stereo, Bluetooth, and SiriusXM from the SE trim onwards. Navigation, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto are all features that are reserved for the top tier SEL and GT trims. The sound system is a 6-speaker sound system that is decent at best. With the Outlander GT, this is upgraded to a Rockford Fosgate Sound System that does a great job. The following are the notable features of the interior and infotainment system of the 2021 Mitsubishi Outlander:

  • 7-inch/8-inch touchscreen infotainment system
  • Digital driver display
  • Bluetooth
  • Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
  • Satellite Radio
  • USB Connection
  • AM/FM Stereo
  • 6 Total Speakers

Exterior
5.7/10

The Mitsubishi Outlander looks more modern than it is underneath but is busier to look at than it is pretty.- The Car Connection

The 2021 Mitsubishi Outlander’s exterior is stylish but still feels dated. It will get a redesigned exterior based on the Mitsubishi's Engelberg Tourer Concept that was revealed at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show. Currently, the Mitsubishi Outlander is a compact SUV, but it will move up to become a mid-size segment with the 2022 remodel. The considerable size of the new Outlander makes it a preferable buy option to enjoy more space on the inside. The brand has already teased the next-gen ahead of its mid-2021 launch.

Currently, the ride looks remarkable and domineering, but in an agreeable way. Riding high on 18-inch alloy wheels, it offers 8.5-inches of ground clearance as well. The front gets halogen headlamps flanked by LED DRLs as you move up the upper trims. The car’s side view is the finest with its large windows, chiseled lower C-section, sharp curves, and a floating roof effect. The higher trims get additional features, including a sunroof and rain-sensing window wiper. There is no shortage of color options either as the ride offers 9 colors to choose from.

Compared to its rivals, Mitsubishi Outlander has a straightforward and no-frills exterior design. Its competitors come with more modern and stylish exterior features. The Mazda CX-5 has the maximum wheelbase. The Mitsubishi Outlander and Subaru Forester have somewhat identical dimensions. In terms of ground clearance, Subaru Forester exceeds all with its ample 8.7-inch ground clearance. The following are the notable exterior features of the 2021 Mitsubishi Outlander:

  • 18-inch alloy wheels
  • Halogen/LED headlamps and Taillamps
  • LED DRLs
  • Rain-sensing dual intermittent windshield wiper
  • Heated side mirrors with LED Turn signals

Safety
8.1/10

The 2021 Outlander marks the last outing of the ride in this generation. The NHTSA has granted the ride a perfect 5-star safety rating in the crash tests conducted. The IIHS is also not far behind and granted the Outlander an overall rating of "Good". It was also the 2019 Top Safety Pick by the IIHS, which is a further testament to its safety standards.

For 2021, Mitsubishi has not made any changes to the safety suite of the Outlander which gets amped up with the increase in trim levels. The one drawback you might find is that most of the features are reserved for trims above SP. That being said, the following are the safety features that the 2021 Mitsubishi Outlander comes with:

  • Engine Immobilizer
  • Stability Control
  • Passenger Airbag Occupant Sensing Deactivation
  • Remote Anti-Theft Alarm System
  • Auto Delay Off Headlamps
  • Tire Pressure Monitoring
  • Traction Control
  • Pre-Collision Safety System
  • Post-Collision Safety System
  • 4-Wheel ABS
  • Emergency Braking Assist
  • Dusk Sensing Headlamps
  • LED Headlamp
  • Blind Spot And Lane Departure Warnings Accident Avoidance System
  • Ventilated Front Disc / Solid Rear Disc Brakes
  • Lane Departure Warning Accident Avoidance System

Competition
8.0/10

2021 Mitsubishi Outlander vs. 2021 Honda CR-V

The 2021 Honda CR-V offers an upscale interior and delivers more power than Outlander. The Honda CR-V also provides better fuel efficiency though it lacks acceleration. The Honda CR-V is spacious and offers more cargo space than the Mitsubishi. That being said, the Outlander, provides seating up to 7 passengers. And it's better in terms of exterior design than CR-V. When viewed in terms of long-term reliability as well, the Honda CR-V is a better compact SUV than the Outlander in a holistic point of view.

2021 Mitsubishi Outlander vs. 2021 Mazda CX-5

The 2021 Mazda CX-5 has a more powerful engine and offers better performance than Outlander. The CX-5 delivers fun to drive ride experience and has a more upscale interior. In terms of fuel efficiency, both CX-5 and Outlander offer somewhat identical MPG figures and cost nearly the same. Though the Outlander has more cargo space and a third-row seat, those are the only points that work in the Outlander's case. The Mazda CX-5 offers much more bang for buck features overall and hence is a better option.

2021 Mitsubishi Outlander vs. 2021 Subaru Forester

The 2021 Subaru Forester is the practical and family off-roader in this lineup. It is feature-loaded, extracts a lower price, and has a spacious interior as well. Starting at just 24 grand, the Forester also offers a more powerful engine that has great MPG figures as well. Furthermore, the acceleration prowess and the fun of taking it on an adventure ride is just a new dimension to the driving experience. The dearth of features and the age of the Mitsubishi Outlander severely undercut its case.

Final Verdict

Though the 2021 Mitsubishi Outlander is the best outfit of the ride in this generation, it fails to hit the mark. The competitors are clearly much better equipped and the Outlander feels like an aged veteran in today's time. The 2022 Outlander will probably help its case by a huge margin with all of the latest gizmos and build methodology. And hence, we recommend you hold off from buying the 2021 Outlander and pick up the next generation Outlander when it is released in mid-2021.
