2021 Porsche 911 Turbo Review

Pros

  • Reworked chassis
  • Potent turbocharged engine
  • Can be used as a daily

Cons

  • Engine sounds muted even with a sports exhaust
  • The infotainment system is not the best

The 911 was introduced to the world in the year 1963 as a replacement for the company’s first model the 356 and the following years, it was crowned as the fastest production car in Germany. It was a very fast car and was equally demanding to drive, due to its short wheelbase and engine hanging at the back.

Overview

The 2021 Porsche 911 Turbo is an all-new model, based on the 992-generation 911 platform. Slotted under the top-spec Turbo S, the 2021 911 Turbo is the second most powerful vehicle from the lineup. With a starting MSRP of $170,800 for the coupe, Porsche has not only raised the bar of performance, as technical innovation and improving everyday usability were also the company’s primary engineering goals. It shares its twin-turbo, 3.7-liter flat-six engine with the Turbo S, but the output is down from 641 to 572 horsepower. Likewise, torque decreases from 590 to 553 pound-feet torque. But the new 911 Turbo coupe is significantly more powerful than the 911 Carrera S, and it charges from 0 to 60 mph in less than three seconds.

Completely redesigned Turbo and Turbo S come with ample interior and safety technology in addition to its tremendous power and standard performance upgrades including 18-way adjustable sport seats, a 10.9-inch touchscreen infotainment system, Bose surround-sound stereo, carbon-fiber interior trim, and Porsche's Sport Chrono package. However, the German automaker’s flagship GT sports car promises to be the quickest, fastest, and most powerful 911 Turbo in 46 years of lifetime. Available in two body styles a coupe and a cabriolet, the 911 Turbo competes with top-notch sports cars like the Lamborghini Huracan Evo, McLaren 570S, and the Audi R8.

Pricing and Features
7.0/10

The 2021 Porsche 911 turbo comes in two body styles and two trims. A convertible and a hard-top of the coupe version of the 911 Turbo is offered in the base trim and a tad bit sportier version which is named as the 911 Turbo S. Both trims have an identical drivetrain and gearbox, but the engine in the non-S version is clocked at 572 horsepower whereas the Turbo S produces a whopping 640 horsepower which is a 70 horsepower bump over the last-gen Turbo S.

14-way power-adjustable front seats

All-wheel drive with Porsche Traction Management

Standard BOSE Surround Sound System with 12 speakers including 100W Shell-subwoofer

Adaptive Sport Seats Plus (18-way) with memory package

Tachometer with Turbo specific dial and “turbo S” logo

The major difference between the two trims is the engine and the optional sports Chrono package. Turbo trim comes with adaptive LED matrix headlights and the drivetrain on both the vehicles is almost identical, which means that the base model also has the unique rear-axle steering which is present on the Turbo S model. Another difference is with the brakes, the Turbo has cast iron brakes.

Buying Advice

The 911 Turbo is offered in 2 body styles: a hardtop coupe or a convertible soft top, and you can buy the one which suits your taste better in terms of body style. The major difference between the two trims however is the more powerful engine, beefier brakes, and sportier exterior and reduced weight. However, the best choice is to go for the base trim as it is well equipped and comes with the same features as the S. The engine is a bit down on power, which helps the car to become more of a daily driver but it packs enough grunt to smoke any supercar in a straight line.

Is buying a used Porsche 911 turbo a good idea?

If you want to buy a used Porsche 911 there are a ton of sweet deals for various 911 where you can navigate through the different variations and the six generations of Porsche 911 and choose the best one that suits your taste. From being a collectible, a vintage car to a daily driver the 911 over the generation has been able to fit in every category. If you want something that you might want to take out of the garage every other day for a spin, then the air-cooled engines are the way to go and perhaps any model that was built after 1998, or mainly the cars build in the late 1990s-2000s because that is the era where machine build car started to come in play rather the old hand builds a car, which helped in improving the overall build quality of the car.

Engine and Performance
9.5/10

Porsche has still gone with the rear engine layout housing the boxer motor. This time, however, they have ditched the Overboost function of the previous generation engine, and have also managed to refined the already perfect eight-speed dual-clutch PDK gearbox, which combined with the 3.8-liter twin-turbo boxer six which is bolted over the rear axle produces 572-hp and an identical 553 lb-ft of torque in the standard 911 Turbo.

Porsche has managed to perfect the art of turbocharging, and getting rid of the overboost feature has reduced the turbo lag to nil. The car feels powerful all the time, power is at the touch of your foot whenever you want it, so overtaking at the highways now feels quite effortless for the refined engine. The motor feels responsive throughout the rev range and is accompanied by pops and bangs which can be heard when you lift off the throttle.

The 911 Turbo S has the most power among the rivals, and even the standard model is still not shy enough than the other. The peak torque is available at very low RPM in the Porsche and it also has the most amount of torque at its disposal. Audi R8 is 10HP down on the Porsche Turbo but it features an astonishing nat-asp V10 engine that sounds unlike any other engine on the market. The power is not immediate, unlike any turbocharged engine, the V10 motor has to be revved to get a move on.

2021 Porsche 911 Turbo Coupe Acceleration and Braking Performance

Even though the boxer-6 is smaller than what is offered in the other cars, it churns out the most amount of torque and also is equally powerful when compared to other bigger engines. The 3.8L flat-six engine manages to propel the car from a standstill to 60 MPH in just 2.8 seconds, which is 0.1 of a second faster than the standard Huracan. The S model had a top speed of 205 MPH whereas the standard model has a top speed of 198 MPH which is not at all slow.

The braking performance is equal to the acceleration, the pedal does not have much play in it and when you touch the brakes the bite feels precise and effective. The 911 turbo gets cast iron brakes as standard. They are ventilated well for heat dissipation and are extremely consistent. The standard model matches the timing of the powerful Huracan EVO and the top speed of the Turbo S is the highest. Even the brakes on the standard Turbo are the best in terms of stopping distance and the 911 cover the least distance to come to a halt from 60 MPH.

Fuel Economy
6.6/10

These speed machines are made to set lap times on the famous race tracks, and they are one of the masterpieces that precise engineering has to offer, so the fuel economy does take a back seat when it comes to these cars.

EPA has not yet officially tested the Porsche for the MPG figures, but the 2019 911 Turbo returned figures of 19/24/21 on EPA’s city/highway/combined cycles. It has a 17.8 gallons fuel tank and how much it would take the car remains to be till the official figures turn out.

The McLaren 570S with its twin-turbocharged V8 engine and a lighter curb-weight comes ahead as the most fuel-efficient sports car of the lot closely followed by the Audi R8.

Interior
5.0/10

911 has never been known as a people carrier, however, it still has the 2+2 configuration for the 2021 mode. Inside you will find two very comfortable and supportive front bucket seats that are heated and are power-adjustable. The rear seats are a different story, they are not at all designed keeping adults in mind, and can even give anxiety and claustrophobia to the toddlers that might sit at the back.

The front seats prove to be very comfortable and are well suited for spirited driving and long cruises alike. A little bit of stooping down is required while getting in and out of the vehicle but the relatively larger doors help make this simple. The seats are well suited for the average height person but larger fellows should opt for the regular seats.

Talking about the cargo space, Porsche Turbo has a relatively practical 4.5 cubic feet storage compartment in front of the car, that helps you to do the weekly essential shopping easily. Apart from this storage compartment the rear seats of the Porsche also fold down and double up as a storage compartment giving you an extra 9.3 cubic feet when you choose to travel for a long trip.

.Porsche has a unique 2+2 configuration that the rivals do not offer. In terms of interior space, the figures for the new model for Porsche or the rivals are not yet known, but it is quite right to say that the 911 might outperform its rivals or still give them a tough competition because it can at least on paper accommodate more people than the others.

Infotainment system

Porsche has loaded the new 911 turbo with all the features that they could, including keyless entry and ignition, dual-zone climate control, heated front seats with 14-way power adjustment, LED matrix headlights, and the most unique feature of all is the rear-axle steering. Inside, the driver’s console gets an analog tachometer which is supported by two seven-inch configurable TFT screens, and conventional buttons are used on the touchpoints rather than touch-sensitive buttons that the cars use these days, these buttons help you feel more connected to the car.

With a 10.9-inch touchscreen Porsche has given the Turbo their latest infotainment system. The system has Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration with navigation, SiriusXM satellite radio, and voice control also available is a 4G Wi-Fi hotspot and an SD card. Two USB ports are also available and a standard 12 speaker Bose sound system comes with the car and if you are willing to spend a little extra a 13 speaker Burmester surround sound system will be installed in the car for you.

Exterior
6.0/10

911 can be easily recognized with the iconic and classic Porsche design features even for the 2021 model. Those round LED headlights, with the rear LED strip, with a profile that shows off the air intake vents in the rear fenders, 911 Turbo can be recognized from miles away. The car is put upon a set of 20s in the front and 21-inch wheels at the back. Behind these huge wheels lay the six-piston calipers in the front and four-piston calipers in the back.

A new front spoiler and a new front grille distinguish the front and as the grille are dynamic they offer more airflow, or less drag depending upon the requirements of the vehicle. The rear of the Porsche has an active spoiler which also doubles ups as an air brake when necessary and dual-exit exhaust tips on either end of the car are finished in gloss black for the Turbo standard variant.

Porsche is the heaviest in comparison to the others and is also the longest, this does not compromise with the performance in any way while also making the car a more practical daily driver than the rest, as the longer length means it has more seating and cargo space inside the car.

Safety
9.0/10

Porsche has loaded the car with every bit of safety tech to keep it safe on the road as well as on the tracks. Although it has not yet been tested by either the NHTSA or the IIHS it has a long list of standard safety features that would help the occupants have a sense of safety while driving the car. The few standard safety features that are installed in the car are:

  • Front and Rear Parking Sensors
  • LED matrix headlights
  • Wet Mode, for safe driving in slippery conditions
  • Rain sensing wipers
  • Front,side-impact and curtain airbags
  • ABS

Optionally available feature include

  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Lane Keep Assist
  • Night vision camera
  • Surround-view camera
  • Traffic sign recognition system.

Competition
7.0/10

2021 Porsche 911 Turbo Coupe Vs Lamborghini Huracan EVO

The Huracan proves to be more fun to drive with the combination of the DCT gearbox which is coupled with the naturally aspirated V10 which creates a soulful symphony.

On the other hand, Porsche 911 Turbo is more of an engineering masterpiece that is equally powerful with quite a small Boxer-6 motor in the rear which is turbocharged, and is also more practical than the Lamborghini when used as a daily driver and is more economical.

2021 Porsche 911 Turbo Coupe Vs Mclaren 570 S

In comparison, both the cars go neck and neck on the track, and also stand equal in terms of performance figure, thanks to the lightweight of the Mclaren.

But the practicality of the Porsche makes it more of a car that can be used daily whereas the 570 S proves to be much of a weekender.

2021 Porsche 911 Turbo Coupe Vs Audi R8 Plus

The Audi and the Lamborghini being cousins share the same chassis and engine. Both have the same 7-speed gearbox and come in AWD and RWD configuration.

The Porsche offers a more advanced and complex driving system with the rear-axle steering and is also quicker on tracks and makes the car more agile.

Final Verdict

A Fun-to-drive car that handles well and is powerful yet economical at the same time, an engineering masterpiece if you say, is what the Porsche 911 Turbo is. A true value for money car which is loved for the iconic designs, blistering performance and amazing practical use even while competing with the racehorses on the track, the Porshe can easily help you win races as well as do the daily runs across the city when you need to, this helps the car to become quite a good choice if you want to have fun, love power and yet something that can store the weekly shopping stuff.
