Overall Rating
Ever since Fiat took over the RAM, they have been doing great by taking out their adversaries one by one. It was 2019 when the RAM was at its zenith by over 600,000+ sales and surpassing its rival Chevrolet.
Ever since Fiat took over the RAM, they have been doing great by taking out their adversaries one by one. It was 2019 when the RAM was at its zenith by over 600,000+ sales and surpassing its rival Chevrolet. At first RAM trucks were very tepid and were sold as the more affordable versions of the Ford and GM. But by implementing strategic coherent decisions over time, they have diametrically changed the game and now considered as the epitome of pick-up trucks.
The regular cab variant of the RAM 3500 has only two trim levels on offer and each of those two trims comes with an optional All wheel drive configuration. The base variant Tradesman is a completely bare bone and doesn’t even get some of the most basic essential features like power mirrors and power door lock. Lack of such basic features totally contradicts the truck's lavish interiors.
Big Horn variant is the one which we would recommend you to buy. Considering both price and features at the same time, Big Horn gives a lot more at a reasonably fair amount of increase in the price.

The 2021 RAM 3500 has 5 trim levels on offer; Tradesman, Big Horn, Laramie, Longhorn, and the Limited however, the regular cab variant is only offered in two trims; Tradesman and Big Horn. Each of these trim levels come with an optional all-wheel-drive configuration.

Both the regular cab variants have almost similar amounts of tech on offer, however, the Big Horn variant has much more appealing upgrades than the base variant. But no matter what trim level you choose, you do get the best in class interior quality as expected from a RAM.
Predicated on the most recent sets of data, RAM 3500 is the least expensive truck to maintain and run. The annual maintenance cost of a RAM comes close to $1079 which is very much laudable, whereas its rivals on the other hand like the Ford F350 costs an average of $1295 and the GMC Sierra 3500 at around $1121 annually. Also according to many sources, the RAM trucks are also the least expensive truck to repair.
Although RAM trucks are solidly built, reliability is not one of its strong points. Generally, Dodge is considered to make some of the worst cars, but only after the split between Dodge and RAM happened, RAM got to completely focus on their trucks and go from one of the worst to a good reliable machine on the market and this is when their decision appealed logically coherent to others.
However, every other pick-up truck is made to last long, reliability and pick-ups are a match made in heaven. At present RAM trucks are considered as the go-to option for buyers who want the most luxurious but not for buyers who want the most reliable truck. Compared to its rivals Ford and GMC, the RAM is the least reliable truck in its segment.
Standard warranty of RAM trucks is on par with its rivals, however, when it comes to powertrain limited warranty, RAM leads the game with segment-leading 5 years/100,000 miles warranty (whichever is earlier) for their diesel engines.
Criteria |
Period |
---|---|
Limited warranty |
3 years/ 36,000 miles; whichever is earlier |
Powertrain warranty |
5 years/ 60,000 miles for gasoline and 5 years/100,000 for diesel; whichever is earlier |
24-hour roadside assistance |
3 years/ 36,000 miles; whichever is earlier |
All the manufacturers provide the same amount of warranty in the segment, there is nothing outstanding here, however, it's rival the Nissan Titan provides a massive 5year/100,000 mile standard warranty (whichever is earlier) which is the best in the segment, not even the powertrain warranty of other manufacturers come close to the standard warranty of what Nissan has to offer.
Trucks are often more on the expensive side to maintain than a regular car, you can expect anywhere around a cost 130 cents per mile to maintain your RAM 3500.

Although there is no official confirmation yet, RAM is rumored to come with the new 8 speed ZF or the 9-Speed Allison transmission for the 2021 model year, and this rumor is most likely to come true for the 2021 model.
Power and torque figures are absolutely formidable but RAM has been parodied for many years for its puny 6-Speed transmission which completely feels out of place for a truck with such capabilities. It is high time RAM changes their transmission and that should hopefully happen in 2021.
In terms of the engine, there are no changes to be expected. The 2021 RAM 3500 holds one of the best diesel engines, the Hemi. The standard engine of the RAM 3500 hosts a Hemi 6.4L V8 with 410hp and 429lb-ft of torque, this is very much adequate, however, if you choose the optional engine then you get arguably the best diesel engine on Earth, the Cummins which is a 6.7L Cummins Diesel In-line 6 engine which gets up to 370 horsepower and 850 lb-ft of torque and the third engine is the 6.7-liter High Output Cummins Turbo Diesel In-line 6 engine which delivers up to 400 horsepower and a massive 1,000 lb-ft of torque.

The RAM 3500 comes with one of the best power in the segment however the transmission is what holds back the torque of the truck, the new 2021 with updated transmission will surely improve its torque figures and make it on-par with its rivals. RAM with so much power also has the most towing capacity (35,100 lbs) in the segment.
Big tasks need a big truck and big trucks need big power to get them going and also for stopping them when they need to. The RAM takes 8.4 sec to go from 0-60MPH, this might not be the fastest but it does come to a halt the quickest with a 60-0MPH braking distance of 140ft, thanks to its lightweight the truck stops the quickest in the segment.

The RAM 3500 is a lot more capable, it is one of the most powerful trucks in the segment and can reach even more speeds but the transmission is what holds it back. The Ford F350 is the quickest to go from 0-60MPH in just 7.3 sec however quarter-mile time for all trucks is almost similar with RAM being the slowest.
There is no EPA rating for mileage as every truck in this segment weighs over 8000 lb. However, the estimated mileage of the RAM 3500 and its other rivals are mentioned in the below table:

Although the mileage figure only estimates the RAM 3500 seems to be the most thirsty in the segment, however, the RAM gets the biggest fuel tank in the segment which is miles ahead from its competition, while Ford and GM offer only 36 and 34-gallon fuel tank, RAM offers a massive 50-gallon fuel tank which can take you to places with very less frequent fuel stop when compared to its rivals.
The RAM 3500 gets almost the same interiors as its previous 5th gen model years although few minor updates are expected to be introduced. However, not everything is great, there are few flaws like the ergonomics. When equipped with the adaptive cruise control option, the rearview mirror housing gets bulky and obstructs your windshields right half visibility big time. This happens only when you are over 6ft tall. If you’re over 6ft tall and don’t want this issue to happen to you, then you should omit the adaptive cruise control which is totally ridiculous. However, if you're under 6ft then this problem should not bother you very much.
RAM interiors need no introduction, they are the benchmark, epitome, paradigm of pick-up trucks. RAMs are known for their interiors and these lavish interiors are what made RAM rise above from the cheapest and banal looking truck to the most luxurious and admired pick-up truck in the market.

RAM although being the most comfortable, doesn’t come as the roomiest in the segment, however, if you want the roomiest pick-up then the Ford F350 would be the best buy as it offers the most shoulder room in the segment followed by GMC Sierra 3500.
The 2021 RAM doesn’t get any changes for its interiors. The standard 8.4-inch infotainment touch screen is clear and visible, the graphics are great and there is almost no lag. The optional 12.4-inch touch screen takes it to the next level, it is the most gorgeous looking screen in the whole segment and gives it a more modern look.
However, the 12.4-inch touch screen is ostensible, it feels like it has a lot more to offer than the standard 8.4-inch screen but in reality, it doesn’t. Both gets the same amount of features and on top of that the air conditioning vents have been moved to the screen which make it more cumbersome, the 8.4inch screen gets physical dials which make it easy to use even while driving. It is always good to have physical dials for certain things and the optional screen just takes away all of that.
Also for a truck that is the most expensive in the segment doesn’t get Apple Carplay and Android Auto as standard, they only come as standard for the higher variants.
The 2021 model year is expected to come with reworked styling for the front and rear portions. RAM already looks mean with huge amounts of chrome at the front grille and bold body lines, the new upcoming minor updates should make it look more aesthetically pleasing.
The RAM recently got an update for the 2020 model year and looks much more pronounced than earlier, the 5th gen exterior updates look gorgeous, both the interiors and exteriors complement each other very well.
Some of the exterior features are

The lightest truck in the segment take the most advantage of its powerful torque and mileage, also RAM has the most ground clearance of offer so you can go through tough terrains while being comfortable at the same time. The Ford, on the other hand, is the heaviest in the segment and also gets the least amount of ground clearance on offer and GMC lies in between both of them
None of the RAM 3500 model years have been crash-tested by either NHTSA or IIHS which makes it tough to comment on its overall safety quotient. However, its younger sibling, the 2020 RAM 1500 received a massive 5/5 starts from NHTSA in terms of overall safety and the 2019 RAM 1500 is the only truck to receive the top safety pick + award by IIHS. Since the RAM 3500 is based on the same platform as the RAM 1500, the same laudable scores can be expected fro the 3500 as well.
Although the RAM 3500 might not have safety scores, the fact that it is a truck itself proves its safety as trucks are made to be more rigid and solid which makes them even more reassuring.
Ford trucks are more diverse, they have 5 engine options to choose for one truck which makes it perfect and you can choose what best fits your needs a lower base price and better ride quality when a trailer is attached is what makes Ford superior whereas RAM has laudable ride quality but becomes worst upon attaching a trailer to it.
However, RAM has a better ride quality, top-notch interiors, laudable mileage, and most towing capabilities. So If you want the most luxury along with great towing capabilities then RAM is the go-to option for pick-up truck buyers.
As impressive GMC trucks can be, the RAM 3500 is the better one. The introduction of better interior quality and high tech features is what diametrically changed what the buyer could even expect from a pick-up truck. Currently, RAM surpasses GMC with better interiors and superior towing capacity.
In-fact RAM is the benchmark for a pick-up truck and has no match for it, being the most expensive it also offers the most luxury and power at the same time.
Once RAM ostracizes using its old transmission and accouters its truck with the new expected Allison 9- Speed or the ZF 8-Speed transmission, then they might just gain the winning formula in their hands. RAM claims that more than 50% of their trucks sold are used as family trucks which is great. The interiors are perfect in-fact far better than many daily drivers so they can easily be used as a family truck and also for those unexpected circumstances where you need to move heavy things, or more than that. Overall, RAM 3500 offers the best of both worlds, luxury, and ruggedness at the same time and this is what makes them so irresistible.
