About 2021 Volkswagen Arteon

3.8

Overall Rating

The 2021 Arteon is offered in three trim levels: SE, SEL R-Line, and SEL Premium R-Line. Stick with the base SE model if you’re looking for value. It offers a lot of standard features for its $36,995 starting price.

Combining the best of both worlds like a boss, the upgraded 2021 Volkswagen Arteon is a hatchback, giving you the benefits and feels of a full-sized sedan while resembling a coupe. The Volkswagen Arteon has been a stylish sight on American roads since its arrival last year – and for the 2021 model year, the Arteon will get a host of technology and style updates, inside and out, to keep its edge. Mechanically, the peppy 2.0-liter turbo-four continues but the 5-seat VW's flagship sedan can't match the sportiness of the German Rivals including BMW and Audi. The Arteon's new Shooting Brake version is based on the same platform but is fundamentally different, though it's not coming to the US this year.

Being one of the best-selling cars on sale today, the 2021 Arteon SE's starting price is $1000 more than the 2020 model's MSRP. The next-in-line SEL R-Line starts at a similar price and the SEL Premium R-Line price takes a $700 bump. For the price, Volkswagen offers Arteon with incredible utility, revised styling, improved interior materials, and updated technology. Added Safety technology brings a Level 2 driving assistance system with adaptive cruise control as standard. The top trim level's available goodies include 30-color LED ambient cabin lighting and a 12-speaker Harman Kardon audio system. On sale right now, the 2021 VW Arteon's release date is November 2020.

As far as the buying advice is concerned, we suggest the mid-level trim that is the R-line trim. It looks stronger than the base trim with those big air intakes, new exterior color options, and better bumpers. It also has more exciting features inside and stands neither too high nor too low in your budget. So it ticks off all relevant checkboxes very smoothly.

On the other hand, you’ll want to upgrade to the SEL Premium if you’re looking for luxuries like ventilated seats and hands-free parking assist.

The 2021 Arteon is offered in three trim levels: SE, SEL R-Line, and SEL Premium R-Line. Stick with the base SE model if you’re looking for value. It offers a lot of standard features for its $36,995 starting price.

Pricing and Features
7.5/10

Volkswagen has simplified the 2021 Arteon trim levels, which offers three distinct configurations: SE, SEL-R Line, and SEL Premium R-Line. Though we miss the Arteon R and Shooting brake versions which are on sale in other markets. The power comes from a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine, making 268 horsepower. The power is taken to the front wheels via a standard eight-speed automatic transmission with Tiptronic shifting while VW's 4Motion all-wheel drive is available on SEL R-Line models and standard on SEL Premium R-Line models.

For the 2021 model year, the Arteon will get a host of technology and style updates, inside and out. Accordingly, the Arteon SE's starting price is $1,000 more than the 2020 model's price, the SEL R-Line costs about the same, and interestingly, the top-spec SEL Premium R-Line gets a discount of $700. VW has dropped the SEL trim level from the 2021 model lineup. VW offers all models of the 2021 Arteon in three new colors: Kings Red metallic paint while the R-Line adds Oryx White and Lapiz Blue.

The 2021 Volkswagen Arteon will have a starting MSRP of $36,995 for the SE trim and will go up to about $46,995 for the SEL Premium R-LINE. All prices exclude a $1,195 destination charge. As standard, the Arteon gets some of the best features like heated front seats, a panoramic sunroof, and adaptive cruise control, LED headlights, rain-sensing windshield wipers, an XDS differential-lock, heated side mirrors, and cruise control. For added safety, this VW Arteon also features automatic emergency braking, rear cross-traffic alert, and blind-spot monitoring.

Maintenance, Reliability and Warranty

It looks thoroughly contemporary from the outside, but there’s plenty of shared engineering under the skin of the Arteon, all of which suggests it shouldn’t provide too many headaches on the reliability front. The long list of driver-assistance technologies on offer ensures the Arteon is a very safe car, too, with excellent results in independent crash-testing.

The price per gallon is expected to be $2.57. For a year, that can mean approximately $1400-$1500. Not bad! Buyers often tend to ignore this aspect of the car while buying but it is extremely essential to know and understand how much money you’ll be spending for every mile that you’ll be driving.

Buying Advice

As far as the buying advice is concerned, we suggest the mid-level trim that is the R-line trim. It looks stronger than the base trim with those big air intakes, new exterior color options, and better bumpers. It also has more exciting features inside and stands neither too high nor too low in your budget. So it ticks off all relevant checkboxes very smoothly.

On the other hand, you’ll want to upgrade to the SEL Premium if you’re looking for luxuries like ventilated seats and hands-free parking assist. The VW Arteon is definitely worth the money as there are a lot of car options for the price range. Though it's not the only value choice in the segment the rivals including Kia Stinger offers a good package as well. If you want to spend more, the Audi A4, BMW 3-series, and Mercedes C-Class fall into the territory.

Is buying a used Arteon a good idea?

No wonders, VW Arteon is your everyday family car, and we won’t tell you to say no to a good deal, but before you buy a used one, check for its warranty and see that it does not require much service and maintenance. Otherwise, it will eat up all your finances with a frequent maintenance schedule.

The only significant difference between the 2019 and 2020 Arteon is the warranty. Volkswagen covers the 2019 model with a six-year/72,000-mile warranty, whereas 2020 models come with a four-year/50,000-mile warranty. We recommend starting your search with a 2019 model, which will likely cost less than a new Arteon. Check out the Volkswagen deal page for the best discounts and deals.

What about the 2021 Volkswagen Arteon's 0-60 MPH Acceleration and Braking Performance?

The 2021 Arteon equipped with all-wheel-drive goes from 0-60 mph in 6 seconds, while the FWD drivetrain manages a 6.5 sec 0-60 mph sprint. Most of Arteon's competitors in the price range are still quicker. The 268 hp 2.0T engine with 8-speed automatic is tuned for efficiency, so Arteon's accelerations feel light initially while pulling from a stop. Once the turbo kicks in, you will have more than enough passing power on the highways.

Depending on the trim level, the Arteon comes standard with 18-, 19-, or 20-inch wheels. The standard 8-speed automatic, made by Aisin, shifts smoothly and reacts quickly to the shift paddles. For the enthusiasts, the Arteon Shooting Brake and 315 hp Arteon R performance version isn't coming to the US.

What about the Ride and Handling of the 2021 Volkswagen Arteon?

The Arteon's driving impression offers a comfortable ride irrespective of the suspension tuning while the handling remains competent as well. Outfitted with an adaptive suspension as standard, you can adjust quickly as per the driving style to Comfort, Normal, or Sport modes. Going around the rough pavements or bumps, this big VW remains comfortable, composed, and stable.

VW offers the XDS Cross Differential system with Arteon which works as a limited-slip differential, using the ABS and traction control systems to apply light brake pressure to the inside wheel when cornering aggressively. The unibody chassis of the Arteon feels tight and the turbocharged 2.0-liter engine does not feel underpowered considering the Arteon’s approximately 3,500-pound curb weight.

For those who like to keep things under control, the shift paddles of the SEL Premium R-Line model comes in handy. They also allow the driver to downshift for a turn and then powering out of the corner. In Sport mode, the suspension is tight, the steering gets a little more weighted, and the active LED headlights sweep a little more quickly into corners.

So that’s the trade-off you see.

Exterior
7.0/10

Volkswagen has introduced subtle styling updates to the 2021 Arteon that evokes the sportiness of a coupe with the space and flexibility of a midsize sedan. In front, the Arteon comes with a new light bar in its grille, spanning the width of the car along with new front bumpers with separate air intakes. At the back, you will find VW’s new logo prominently on the trunk. It looks gorgeous and artful. The outsides of the 2021 VW Arteon sedan will be arrested as you watch that long spun body carrying those sharp lines.

The two R-Line models, SEL and SEL Premium get the new light bar that surrounds the new Volkswagen logo and create a light signature in day and night driving that’s instantly recognizable.  You will love the addition of three new chrome bars instead of four in the 2020 model. Their color pallet is also generous this year.

You can now opt for Kings  Red metallic paint for the base model while the Oryx White and Lapiz Blue for the R-line trim. VW offers the entry-level Arteon SE with 18-inch alloy wheels, the SEL R-Line has 19s, and the SEL-Premium comes equipped with the 20s. Beyond the grille, other design features have been updated, from the front apron to the rear badging.

Apart from this, some significant distinctions have been kept for trims. For example, two additional air intakes for SE trim and a larger intake opening for the R-line trim. Very thoughtful, VW!

Competition
7.0/10

Volkswagen Arteon Vs. Infiniti Q50

While Infiniti has better output and acceleration, Arteon is good with fuel efficiency and cargo space. Infiniti Q50 has some extra things like Wifi-hotspot and driver-adjustable lumbar. But then, Arteon has a passenger adjustable lumbar! We are not here to baffle you. What we mean to say is, you should have a test drive and decide in this case!

The 2021 Infiniti QX50 is part of the generation launched for 2014, because of which the interior and the infotainment looks dated. The stong turbocharged engine delivers good motivation but for the price, you have a better package in form of VW Arteon.

Volkswagen Arteon Vs BMW 3 series

We love the bimmer. And this is not just because of that luxury badge, but because it's an all-rounder. It gives smooth and athletic rides like a pro and is versatile. While the horsepower figures shout louder for the Arteon, everything else is better in the case of the BMW 3 series, be it acceleration, space, or fuel-efficiency. The price for BMW is no doubt higher than the Arteon, but BMW justifies it inside and out!

BMW holds a clear upper hand for its sporty driving dynamics and precision performance. The German sedan offers superior interiors as well as compared to the Volkswagen Arteon. Though the technology features in the updated Arteon is no less. It's a pick between practicality and performance.

Volkswagen Arteon Vs Nissan Maxima

While Maxima has a more powerful engine, it has sub-par acceleration and fuel efficiency. The rear seats for Maxima are cramped too. Arteon is a large car (and can actually be addressed as a full-sized sedan) with more practicality. Perfunctory nods for Arteon here!

The Nissan Maxima offers V6 under the hood which has a different footprint as compared to the turbocharged Arteon. Moreover, the reliability of Nissan is higher as compared to Volkswagen.

Final Verdict
6.2/10

Volkswagen has always been loved for its space and practicality, and that is something you can be relieved of. the 2021 Arteon is a car that you can count on given its sub $36,000 price tag. It wins your confidence and handles your dependability exceptionally well. Who doesn't like upgrades! It is offering you so much and so generously this year. Be it looks, be it feels, or be it technology; it is covering every segment well. The new, better, and improved Arteon is on its way, and we think it will be worth the wait.
