Volvo offers three trims for 2021 XC40 - Momentum, Inscription, and R-Design. All the trims come with a standard 2.0L Turbocharged Inline-4 engine, although with a dual tune setup, one for each drivetrain - the T4 - FWD and T5 - AWD which is a $2,000 option. Both, the T4 and T5 get the 8-Speed automatic as standard. 

Volvo offers packages that include climate package, advanced package, and premium package, along with many options like a panoramic sunroof, white contrast roof, exterior styling kit, and also there are accessories like mudflaps, load bars, bicycle holder, roof rack, trailer hitch, child booster seat, and a 14-speaker Harman Kardon sound system.

Our expectations from the Volvo XC60

Priced at an MSRP of $40,950, the 2021 Volvo XC40 T5 R-Design trim is the one to get. The T5 comes with a sporty front fascia, sports-tuned chassis, a 6.1 second 0-60 time, gloss black roof, Nappa leather interior, heated front seats. We recommend getting the advance package which adds wireless charging, park assist, 12V power outlet, and also the optional Lava Carpet, for that added interior style.

The 2021 Volvo XC40 is powered by a 2.0L turbocharged Inline-4 making 187 hp and 221 lb-ft of torque and comes with FWD called T4 in its stock configuration. If you select AWD T5 models, the same engine sees a power increase to 248 hp and 258 b-ft of torque. The power goes to the drivetrains with the help of an 8-speed transmission. There is also an all-electric XC40 Recharge makes delivers 402 hp.

The Volvo XC40 does the 0-60 in 8.1 seconds which is faster than the Audi Q3 and the Lexus UX200, however, is 1.5 seconds slower than the BMW X1. If you select the AWD version the 0-60 time improves to 6.1 seconds. It does the quarter-mile in 16.1 seconds in its base configuration and both versions will achieve a top speed of 130 mph. The 2021 Volvo XC40 has a towing capacity of up to 3,500 pounds.

Moreover, the $2000 premium AWD or the T5 model delivers 22 mpg in the city and 30 mpg on the highway, and a combined 25 mpg. The Volvo XC 40 comes with a gas tank that measures 14.2 gallons the this is for both drivetrains.

The 2021 Volvo XC40 offers a relatively spacious cabin and upscale interiors with chic finishing, all for a starting price tag of $33,700. The XC40 can seat up to 5 comfortably. The front row seats are heated with a 10-way power driver with memory function and a power lumbar with a 10-way front passenger seat. The climate package gives a heated steering wheel and extended heating to the front seats (cushions and cushion extensions).

The interior upholstery is leather on the Momentum and Inspiration trims with color options, the R-design interior is Nubuck textile seat inserts with Nappa leather in black. Dual-zone front automatic air conditioning is standard. The Volvo XC40 comes with a cargo capacity of 20.7 cu.ft. which is more than the Lexus UX 200 but lesser than the BMW X1 and Audi Q3.

The 2021 XC40 system is equipped with a 9-inch portrait-oriented touchscreen that runs on the Sensus Connect system and comes with smartphone integration with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Bluetooth connectivity, SiriusXM satellite radio (complimentary trial subscription), 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot (AT&T), smart device remote start, 2 front and 2 rear USB ports, and an 8-speaker sound system.

The R-Design trim (MSRP - $38,950) adds Volvo's own navigation system - Sensus Navigation Pro and also SiriusXM's real-time traffic updates. The Inspiration trim comes with the same system. On all three trims, there is the option to add ambient lighting and wireless charging part of the Advanced package and a 14-speaker Harman Kardon Premium Sound system (stand-alone option).

The 2021 Volvo XC40 offers a classy and stylish look while maintaining its bold nuances. The Momentum has Bright Aluminium roof rails and can be had contrasting white roof as an optional extra. The R-Design trim offers a much sportier look and equips high-gloss black grille with horizontal mesh, double integrated chrome tailpipes, and a black roof. 

The Inscription is reminiscent of luxury. For an MSRP of $40,450, it equips 18-inch 6-spoke black diamond-cut alloy wheels, chrome frame grille with vertical chrome bars, and Matt Silver metallic skid plate. Other standard features across the trim lineup include power-folding exterior mirrors, and adaptive LED headlamps, and the same set of paint options as the 2020 model and still includes denim blue.

In comparison to its rivals, the Volvo XC40 is also one of the shorter cars and is 1-2 inches shorter than Audi Q3 and BMW X1 however, had the longest wheelbase. However, the Volvo XC40 has the highest ground clearance of 8.3 inches, 0.3 more than the BMW X1.

The NHTSA has tested the 2021 Volvo XC40 and has given it a 5-star overall safety rating, out of a possible 5-stars. The IIHS has also tested the 2021 Volvo XC40 and has given it an overall "Good" rating having scored an acceptable in Latch. However, the IIHS has also given the SUV a Top Safety Pick+ award. 

The 2021 Volvo XC40 comes equipped with many active safety and driver assistance features, apart from offering a Pilot Assist System and numerous optional safety features. A few of the standard safety features include - forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, lane keep assist, automatic high-beam headlights, a rearview camera, traffic sign recognition, road departure mitigation, and oncoming collision mitigation.

The Audi Q3 comes with similar power and is slightly slower in performance, however, does offer AWD as standard and better trunk space while offering similar interior space. However, the Volvo does offer a more upscale interior and lots of safety features. This makes Volvo the winner of this battle.

2021 Volvo XC40 Vs 2021 BMW X1 

The BMW X1 is equipped with a more powerful engine and offers better performance, better mpg, as well as more legroom in the rear and cargo space. However, when it comes to finishings, the Volvo XC40 does offer a much better interior. That said, the BMW X1 still is better than the Volvo XC40. 

2021 Volvo XC40 Vs 2021 Lexus UX 200

The Lexus UX 200 offers an enjoyable ride, with very good mpg figures with upscale interiors and numerous standard features. However, it lags behind the XC40 in terms of performance and acceleration and also offers a small-scale trunk space in the segment in comparison to other rivals. Which makes the Volvo XC40 the better option of the two.

The 2021 Volvo XC40 comes with a good amount of power and performance once upgraded to the T5 (AWD) versions. The selling point of this car is the interior and safety which is much better than others. That said, if you are looking for more performance the BMW X1 is a good option to consider.
