Overall Rating
The 2022 BMW 2-Series Coupe gets a complete redesign this year and is now available for sale after its release at a starting price of $37,345. Both the interior and exterior get a thorough update and even the engine gets more power and should be quicker in the 0-60 sprint. The 2 series gran coupe, the sedan version with longer dimensions is yet to be launched but is expected to share the same specs.
The 2022 BMW 2-Series Coupe was recently shot being test-driven on the track as we inched closer to the release. BMW has finally taken the covers off the second-generation 2 series after it being in production since 2014. It sees a complete overhaul inside out but luckily or not, does not get the massive front grille. Though the 2L turbo-4 engine is carried forward, it now gets higher output for even quicker 0-60 timings.
The interior of the 2022 2 series has also become more spacious, thanks to its larger dimensions, but does not get the latest infotainment interface. The larger BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe shares the same specs as the 2 series coupe which shall also get similar updates later this year.
The 2 series coupe is available for sale at price starting at $37,345 and although there are no direct premium coupe rivals at this price, it faces competition from the likes of Audi A5, Lexus RC 300, and Mercedes-Benz C-Class Coupe.Â
The base BMW 2-series is available in the 230i guise is the one that offers great value with a low $37,345 starting price.
It not only has plenty of grunt under its hood, but it also features a host of safety features and driver aids as standard and comes loaded with all the creature comforts one would need on a daily basis. That said, opting for the Premium 2 Package and the Parking Assistance package would be a smart choice as it adds value to the car with the added creature comforts and convenience.

"The second generation 2022 BMW 2 Series is punchy and full of promise but ultimately disappoints with its disconnected driving experience." - CarGurus
The 2022 BMW 2-Series will be powered by two engine options. The 230i variant gets a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-4 engine that produces close to 255 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque which is up 7 hp and 37 lb-ft. The M240i variant gets a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-6 engine that puts out 382 hp and 369 lb-ft, a bump of 34 hp than the outgoing model which is also more than the first-ever M2.
Both the engines are mated to an 8-speed ZF automatic transmission which also features the manual shift mode. The previously available 6-speed manual is gone for now and there's no news on its availability in the future. The transmission is smooth and quick and hence BMW decided to do away with the dual-clutch automatic previously found in the 'M' line of cars.
The base 2-series is pretty quick in itself as it manages to do the 0-60 mph in 5.5 seconds and has a top speed of 130 MPH. The M240i on the other hand can reach 60 MPH from a standstill in 4.1 seconds but has a higher top speed of 155 MPH. The 230i can also be upgraded for a higher 155 MPH top speed. Until the next-generation BMW M2 makes its way, the M240i is the fastest 2 series on sale.

The rivals also get similar engine configurations albeit producing different power and torque figures. The A5 though has lower engine output it is equally quick as the 2-series. The Mercedes-Benz C-Class slots in between the BMW and Lexus in terms of power and torque. The BMW 2-Series is the fastest among all with the A5 matching up with it even with the standard Quattro AWD.
The 2022 BMW 2-Series employs the same engine with a slight bump in power figures. But it gets better in the EPA ratings this year as it returns 26 MPG in the city, 35 MPG on the highways, and 29 MPG combined, which is a marginal yet noticeable hike as compared to last year.
That said, the more powerful M240i with standard AWD is rated for 23/32/26 MPG in city/highway/combined respectively, by the EPA. The 13.7-gallon fuel tank offers a pretty decent range of around 400 miles combined.

Not only is the new 2022 2-series coupe quick, but it is also rather efficient as well. While both Audi and Mercedes get similar MPG ratings, the standard AWD drivetrain reduces the highway efficiency for Audi. Also, with the larger gas tanks on offer, both the RC 300 and C 300 coupe offer a much longer range than the BMW.
"The compact luxury car has a distinguished facade and a modern interior that's roomier than the coupe that its replacing." - Car and Driver
The interior of the 2022 BMW 2-Series gets an evolution as well with the cabin continuing the driver-centric layout as everything is angled towards the driver for easy access. The overall look is reminiscent of a 3-series or 4-series model of recent years apart from minor differences. The center console is neatly laid out as well which features the transmission shifter, traction control, and drive modes.
As standard, there is a decent level of equipment on offer in the new 2 series and while the Live Cockpit Pro gauge cluster with navigation system is only offered on the M240i model, the 230i gets through both the options packages or as a standalone option. The interior SensaTec leatherette upholstery is available in 3 different colors as standard along with a choice of 4 leather color options for an additional price of $1,450.Â
The cabin is pretty spacious upfront to accommodate an average American and while the rear seat isn't the most spacious, adults can manage to squeeze in for short rides. The 10 cu-ft of trunk space is also pretty sizable for a car its size.Â

The BMW 2-series offers the best legroom in the segment for both the front and rear seat occupants despite its compact dimensions. That said, the A5 has marginally better legroom and headroom than the BMW and also offers a slightly larger trunk. The Lexus on the other hand is more a 2+2 seater as the rear seat is only suited for young kids while the C-Class offers cabin and luggage space on par with the Bimmer.Â
As standard, the new 2022 BMW 2-series gets the older 8.8-inch infotainment system with the older iDrive 7 interface.Â
The infotainment system does not feature the latest iDrive 8 interface with curved displays to keep the costs in check. Optionally, one can also upgrade to a 10.25-inch touchscreen unit and a head-up display for an added price. There is satellite radio, real-time traffic, Apple CarPlay & Android Auto compatibility also offered as standard.
The 10-speaker Hi-Fi audio system can be upgraded to a punchier 14-speaker 464W Harman/Kardon surround sound system.Â
"And in a win for people with eyes everywhere, the enogrged kidney grille of the 4 Series and other newer BMWs is absent here." - Edmunds
The exterior looks of the 2022 BMW 2-Series have been heavily camouflaged up till now but it's out in the open now. While the older one was rather simple to look at, but the new 2022 model year 2 Series looks rather sharp. The sharp body lines and curves look well with the proportionately sized front kidney grilles instead of the polarizing large vertical grilles seen on other BMW. With the increase in the wheelbase by 2-inches the side profile now looks better proportioned.
On the sides, you get larger 18-inch alloy wheels as standard with an all-new double-spoke alloy design. At the rear, the 2-Series gets a trunk-mounted spoiler with the M240i and larger 19-inch wheels. LED headlights and tail lights are offered as standard while the M240i gets wider front bumpers as compared to the 230i. The 2-Series can be had with 2 colors as standard along with 6 other premium metallic colors for another $550 which includes the swanky new Brooklyn Grey Metallic and the Thundernight metallic purple shade showcased here.

The dimensions of the 2022 BMW 2-Series Coupe have been increased by a bit making it feel more proportionate. Still, the BMW 2-Series is the smallest in terms of dimensions as compared to the Mercedes C-Class Coupe, Lexus RC, and Audi A5. The BMW has the highest ground clearance to offer while the Mercedes has a low hunkered down stance.
That said, the BMW looks really stylish and does not compromise in terms of cabin space in spite of its smaller dimensions. The RC 300 on the other hand is the one that will attract most eyeballs out on the streets.

The 2022 BMW 2-Series Coupe hasn’t been crash-tested yet. But the new 2-Series is based on the CLAR platform that is shared by Toyota Supra twin and BMW Z4. So we expect the crash-test scores and safety of the BMW 2-Series to be good. That said, the 2021 BMW 2-Series was crash-tested by IIHS and it got a rating of ‘Good’ in all six parameters. Standard safety features expected on the 2022 BMW 2-Series include:
While the A5 is a much pricier offering from Audi as compared to the 2-Series since the A3 is only available in a 4-door model, it is larger, has Quattro AWD, and even gets a mild-hybrid system as standard. Both are equally quick and have similar space on the inside but the BMW returns better MPG figures. The BMW is also the more attractive one here and has better driving dynamics and hence is the preferred option between the two.
The Lexus RC is one of the older models here but it still looks particularly stylish even today. It is neither as quick nor as frugal as the 2-Series, while the BMW also has a more spacious and premium cabin to offer. Both are equally good in terms of safety but the much lower asking price makes it a landslide victory for the 2022 BMW 2-Series.
The Mercedes also received a facelift this year with coupe coming in soon but it is still the most expensive of the lot. It's also a bit slower off the mark and isn't quite as efficient as the BMW, but both offer a premium and spacious interior which is loaded with technology and creature comforts. Therefore, the lower asking price of the 2-Series tilts the evenly balanced scale towards its side.
The 2022 BMW 2-Series Coupe will be built in BMW’s San Luis Potosi Plant, Mexico, and has been released across the country at a price starting at $37,345. The larger dimensions and more spacious cabin with the premium material & build quality have helped it evolve multiple folds. It is also faster than and more frugal than before and yet maintains its affordability factor. Add to that the complementary 3 years of maintenance and it is all set to dominate the compact premium coupe segment.
