2022 BMW 8 Series Review

Glorious, sporty, and agile are the three ideal words to best describe the reincarnated BMW G15 8 Series.

Glorious, sporty, and agile are the three ideal words to best describe the reincarnated BMW G15 8 Series. Not a lot of people do remember the original 8 Series from the late ‘90s but the new version of the iconic vehicle is equally appealing even to those who know. Much like the previous model, the G15 8 Series succeeded the F13 6 Series and is built on BMW’s latest CLAR platform

Pricing and Features
8.0/10

The BMW 8 Series Coupe is offered in two body styles i.e coupe and convertible and then there are the M badged models which are reviewed separately. The regular 840i Coupe comes with a standard I-6 motor along with an RWD or an AWD layout. On the inside, the car offers a plethora of tasteful features that include soft-close doors, premium leather upholstery, heated and power-operated front sport seats, heated leather-wrapped steering wheel along with heated armrests, multicolor ambient interior lighting, a premium 16-speaker Harman Kardon surround-sound system, fully digital instrument cluster, and head-up display among other features. The optional Driving Assistance Package brings a slew of advanced safety techs including a surround-view camera system, a blind-spot monitoring system with rear cross-traffic alert, and an automated parking system.

Engine and Performance
8.9/10

The 8 Series might catch your attention with its mighty 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8s but the regular 840i Coupe is no slouch either. The 2022 BMW 840i coupe engine is a 3.0-liter B58 turbocharged I-6 unit and it delivers a maximum of 335 horsepower and 338 lb-ft of maximum torque. Like other I-6 units from BMW, the B58 offers excellent refinement levels and is quite responsive too. At city speeds, the motor remains unstressed and relaxed cruising speeds also don’t agitate the motor too much. Flooring the gas pedal results in a strong surge of power that feels more than adequate for most of the driving needs as well to fulfill those sudden urges of adrenaline. The motor is mated to a standard 8-speed automatic transmission that is smooth and precise. Moreover, it uses GPS data to predict and optimize shifts according to the car’s location. It does an excellent job of keeping the motor relaxed while extracting all the power efficiently. The car accelerates to 60mph in 5 seconds which is a decent time considering the power figures and the engine configuration of the vehicle.

The Jaguar F-Type might take a buyer by surprise with its price to performance ratio and the brand has made the entire F-Type lineup completely V8-powered. The supercharged V8 dishes out an impressive 444 horsepower and 428 lb-ft of torque, posting a 0-60mph time of 4.4 seconds and a quarter-mile time of 13 seconds. The active exhaust system of the F-Type makes the vehicle more appealing than the base 8 Series with those classic pops and crackles you’d find on a V8-powered sports car. The Porsche 911 Carrera gets a 3.0-liter twin-turbo flat-6 motor and despite being less powerful than both the F-Type and the LC 500, it posts the quickest 0-60mph and standing-quarter-mile timings. Moreover, it has the sportiest handling and the highest top speed among the rivals here. The Lexus LC 500 gets a massive naturally aspirated 5.0-liter V8 under its hood and is as quicks as the F-Type. It offers the most laid-back driving experience here but doesn’t disappoint around tight bends either.

Fuel Economy
7.0/10

High-performance sports cars were never truly meant for returning impressive fuel economy figures yet the base 8 Series coupe stands out in the segment with its rather impressive EPA ratings. The city mileage of the 2022 BMW 8 Series is rated at 23mpg while out on the highways the car returns 30mpg. The combined mileage is rated at 25mpg. With a big gas tank of 18 gallons, it goes on to deliver some impressive driving range figures too such as 414 miles of city driving range and 540 miles of highway driving range.

The Jaguar F-Type with its supercharged V8 isn’t quite fuel-efficient but it doesn’t disappoint given its impressive performance and power figures. The most disappointing part about the car is its sub-300 miles of city driving range. The Porsche 911 Carrera manages to impress here with some decent driving range figures as well as mpg figures considering the fact that it is the quickest and the sportiest one here. The Lexis LC 500 has almost similar fuel economy ratings to the F-Type but it stands out from the rest with its huge 21.7-gallon gasoline tank with which it manages to deliver a 347-mile of city driving range and 543-mile of highway driving range respectively.

Interior
7.2/10

BMW has focused equally on the interior design and comfort of the 840i like its performance. The 2022 BMW 840i interior offers a healthy list of standard features along with exceptional comfort levels and build. The front seats are sport units and get heating and power-adjustability as standard. The headroom and legroom are adequate for both the driver and the front passenger while the rear seats are mostly impractical apart from storing those extra luggage bags. Some of the standout interior features include ambient mood lighting with various color presets, a heated steering wheel, and a head-up display. The infotainment system is the latest iDrive 7 interface that runs on a 10.25-inch touchscreen display along with an integrated navigation system as well. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are also offered as standard along with Bluetooth connectivity and voice commands. The audio system is a premium 16-speaker Harman Kardon unit that offers an excellent surround sound output. The cargo capacity is quite generous at 14.8 cu-ft.

The Jaguar F-Type gets a no-nonsense cabin but comes with a 2-seater configuration only. Interior space is slightly on the lower side and tall passengers and drivers might brush their heads against the headliner often. The overall fit and finish levels are excellent but the dashboard design and interior theme feel a bit dull in front of the rivals here. The Porsche 911 Carrera has the same interior as its last year’s model and it’s tasteful as per Porsche’s standards. The interior dimensions are not disclosed by the brand but it is quite spacious and can seat 4 people on paper. The cargo space is as generous as the 8 Series too at 14.4 cu-ft. The Lexus LC 500 has the plushest and luxurious cabin here and justifies Lexus’s luxury image almost perfectly. The cabin of the LC 500 is covered with premium leather and metallic trims while the dashboard design is quite unique and stands out among the rest in the segment. Headroom and legroom are adequate at the front seats while the rear seats are quite impractical, much like the 8 Series’s rear seats.

Some interior features are:

  • Heated and power-adjustable front sport seats
  • 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment display running iDrive 7 along with integrated navigation system
  • Sirius XM radio
  • Bluetooth
  • Voice commands
  • Multicolor ambient interior lighting
  • Premium leather upholstery
  • Heated sport steering wheel with heated armrests

Exterior
8.0/10

The exterior design of the 2022BMW 840i is quite different from other vehicles of the brand and thankfully, it doesn’t get the latest kidney grille design as well. The front grille is sleek and the LED adaptive headlights along with the LED running lights complement the front fascia gracefully. Apart from being elegant, the front end has a distinct aggressive appeal too, to justify the impressive performance lurking under the long hood of the car. The side profile gets a sporty treatment too and the 19-inch wheels look spectacular as well. The rear-end of the car deserves all the attention owing to the stretched yet sleek LED taillight units. The ground clearance of the car is decent too at 4.8 inches.

The Jaguar F-Type gets the sportiest exterior design here that gives it a supercar-like stance from the front. The wide front grille of the previous-gen model is now sleeker in the latest iteration and the lower 3.9-inch ground clearance means more stability at high speeds. Yet, it makes this car quite impractical during day-to-day driving scenarios. The Porsche 911 Carrera gets the traditional design from the brand and has negligible aggressive design appeal. Yet, the four-point LED DRLs do manage to gain a fair share of attention out on the roads. The rear-end design of the Carrera is the main highlight of the vehicle owing to the continuous LED taillight design that dominates the tail. The Lexus LC 500 gets Lexus’s latest spindle grille design and wears the most head-turning and radical design among the rivals in the segment. Moreover, the unique chrome design of the wheels looks like nothing else offered in the segment.

Some exterior features are:

  • Power-operated trunk
  • Adaptive LED headlamps
  • 19-inch wheels
  • Dual exhausts with chrome tips
  • Frameless doors

Safety
9.0/10

The almost exotic price tag of the vehicle combined with the low sales number compels both the NHTSA and the IIHS to skip the vehicle in terms of crash testing it. Nevertheless, the car gets all the basic safety techs along with a good amount of standard driver-assist techs such as Lane departure warning and Forward Collision Mitigation system. The CLAR platform of the car provides exceptional structural rigidity while keeping the weight in check.

Some standout safety features include:

  • Remote activated perimeter/approach lights
  • Lane Departure Warning
  • Automatic Emergency Braking
  • Automatic Parking Assist(optional)
  • Lane Keep Assist
  • Adaptive Cruise Control
  • Front & Rear Parking Sensors
  • Blind Spot Monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert(Optional)
  • 360-degree Surround-View Camera(optional)
  • Rearview Camera

BMW 8 Series Coupe vs Jaguar F-Type R-Dynamic Coupe

The Jaguar F-Type is all about pure power, grabbing attention owing to the supercar-like design, and an enthusiastic driving session whenever you see an open stretch of road or out on the tracks. On the practicality aspect, the F-Type surprises too with a generous trunk capacity while it comes only in a 2-seater configuration. It is quicker and faster than the 840i and carries a wary lower price tag too. Overall, it is best suited for those looking for a two-seater coupe with an abundance of thrill.

BMW 8 Series Coupe vs Lexus LC 500

The Lexus LC 500 is more comfort-oriented as compared to the 8 Series and blends sportiness with luxury in a perfect manner. Surely, the LC 500 is not that track-friendly like the 8 Series, yet when it comes to offering comfort and a head-turning design, it is mesmerizing. On the practical aspect too, the LC 500 offers some overwhelming driving range courtesy of its huge gas tank despite housing a massive naturally aspirated 5.0-liter V8 under its hood.

BMW 8 Series Coupe vs Porsche 911 Carrera

The Porsche 911 Carrera triumphs over the 8 Series Coupe by virtue of its perfectly-tuned mechanics for excellent handling and scintillating performance out on the roads. It is also the quickest one among the rivals mentioned above despite having some mediocre power and torque figures. On the inside too, it is better than the 8 Series but also carries a higher price tag than the latter as well.

Final Verdict

The BMW 8 Series in its all-new avatar is as enticing as it gets and ranks among the best in its segment as well. Performance-wise, the base I-6 powered coupe is decent and manage to hold its ground while the interior and the comfort aspects are even better than some of its rivals. The base model is also quite practical owing to its commendable fuel economy and qualifies as a daily driver too if one can drive it carefully enough to not scrape its belly over speed breakers.
