2022 BMW ALPINA XB7 Review

The 2022 BMW Alpina XB7 carries over unchanged from 2021. Priced at $141,300, the car comes with an ALPINA tuned 612 hp 4.4L BI-turbo V8 engine with AWD and ALPINA suspension. The car is an epitome of luxury, and packs in leather upholstery-covered captain chairs, ALPINA designed instrument cluster, and a Harman Kardon Surround sound system with 16 speakers and a 464-watt amplifier.

The 2022 BMW Alpina XB7 Sports Activity Vehicle carries forward unchanged for the year 2022. The Alpina XB7 builds on the standard BMW X7 in terms of upgraded performance and a super-luxurious interior. The XB7 is offered in a single trim level and is powered by a 4.4L Alpina tuned Bi-Turbo V8 engine that outputs 612 hp. The car is available in a total of 10 color options as seen on the standard X7, with Alpina exterior accents.

The Alpina XB7 is priced at $141,300 and comes with ALPINA calibrated xDrive system along with an eight-speed transmission. The Alpina packs in a slightly different exterior complimented with the Alpina exhaust system on the outside, and Nappa leather seats with Anthracite Alcantara headliner on the inside. With this right mixture of performance and luxury, the XB7 goes up against similar cars such as the Lamborghini Urus, the Rolls-Royce Cullinan, and the Mercedes-Maybach GLS.

At $141,300, the 2022 BMW Alpina XB7 comes in a single trim. The car is already well-equipped in terms of creature comforts and other features and comes with optional packages. The packages that we recommend consist of the Panoramic Sky Lounge LED Roof, the Second-row captain chairs, and the Rear-seat entertainment package. We also recommend the Alpina Classic wheels and the BMW Ultimate Care bundle for the Ultimate Bavarian luxury.

Engine and Performance
8.5/10

"With no prospect of an X7M being built, BMW's Alpina tuning house goes big with its 612-hp  XB7 three-row luxury performance SUV." -Car and Driver

The 2022 BMW XB7 retains the same 4.4L Bi-turbo V8 engine that was seen on the 2021 model. Specially tuned by Alpina for better performance, this monstrosity of an engine makes 612 hp with a torque output of 590 lb-ft. That's 89 hp more than what the 2022 BMW X7 M50i makes. This V8 engine is mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission, and power is transferred to the wheels through BMW's xDrive system specially adapted for the XB7 by Alpina.

The V8 engine along with the automatic transmission is the closest thing to attain performance similar to BMW's X7 M50i. Power delivery is linear, and the gearbox is one most precise and quick ones seen to date. The car comes with Comfort, Sport, and Sport+ modes, and engine, gearbox, steering, and suspension responses vary accordingly. The system also gets ALPINA SWITCH-TRONIC software that suits any driving style no matter which mode.

The 2022 BMW Alpina XB7 hits 0-60 mph in 4 seconds flat and completes the quarter-mile run in 12.6 seconds with the top-speed rated being at 180 mph. On the handling front, the 2022 BMW XB7 incorporates an ALPINA sports suspension that offers dynamic ride quality and agility combined with great comfort in any terrain. With large brakes on board, it could deliver braking performance that is on par with some modern-day sports sedans. Moreover, the integral active steering system is quite responsive, especially in the sportier setup.

The Urus stays true to its sporty Italian DNA with its 614 hp power output that gives it the quickest 0-60 MPH time of 3.6 seconds. The XB7 comes next, with its 612 hp engine propelling it ahead of the Merc by 0.1 seconds at 4.0 seconds. The Maybach takes 4.1 seconds to cover the 0-60 MPH sprint. The 563 hp V12 Cullinan takes the slowest 4.8 seconds for the 0-60 MPH run. Also, the Cullinan's peak torque kicks in the earliest at just 1,700 rpm. All in all, the XB7 is the car to consider with its sheer ride quality and performance.

Interior
8.0/10

"Meet the Alpina XB7, a big, three-row SUV that adds a certain layer of excess to BMW's somwehat understated machine." -Road Show.

Inside the 2022 BMW XB7 Alpina, there are no major changes. The interior might not be as luxurious as some rivals but has its styling cues with plush and upscale materials used throughout the cabin. To start with, the Alpina adds some details to the existing X7 interior with the Alpina logo on the steering wheel, gear shifter knob, seats, and an Alpina badge below the center console. These minute details enrich the quality of the cabin and remind you that you are sitting inside something rather special.

The 2022 BMW Alpina XB7 seats up to 7 passengers. The seats are bolstered with premium leather upholstery which offers oodles of luxury once you step inside the cabin. The front seats, on the other hand, comes with the heated and ventilated option along with a massage function. On top of that, you also get a panoramic sunroof and spectacular-looking interior ambient lighting. The XB7 also features a hand-finished LAVALINA Leather steering wheel and the second row comes with optional captain seats as well.

The Urus and the Cullinan seat 5 passengers whereas the GLS seats only 4. Space-wise, the GLS offers the most legroom and headroom, but the ergonomics on the XB7 are way better than most of its competitors. Also, the third row isn't all that cramped up. The XB7's captain seats come with ample cushioning and excellent support. However, there's no beating around the GLS's immensely comfortable rear seats with under-thigh support, leg support, and the unique massage functions seen typically on massage chairs.

When it comes to the infotainment system, the 2022 Alpina XB7 comes with a 12.3-inch touchscreen display with crisp graphics and gets connected to a 16 speaker sound system as standard. BMW also offers a Bowers & Wilkins audio system to enhance the in-cabin music experience. The user interface is smooth, and responses to touch inputs are quick. You also get some top-level features like Gesture control that controls the infotainment system by simple hand gestures. Some interior features include:

  • Heated front and rear seats
  • Four-zone climate control
  • Power-adjustable steering column
  • Soft-close automatic door operation
  • Rear seat entertainment system
  • Real-time traffic display
  • Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
  • Steering wheel mounted controls

Exterior
9.0/10

The exterior of the 2022 BMW XB7 Alpina follows in line with the standard X7 but with some ALPINA treatment to the exterior. The front apron, rear diffuser, and rear spoiler are all specially designed by ALPINA for this car. Overall, the car comes with satin aluminum exterior trim, and there's a lot of chrome all around as well. The 2022 BMW XB7 has a strong road presence and turns a lot of heads on the road.

Upfront, the single most appealing design feature is the Laser LED headlamps that neatly line the chrome-finished signature kidney grille. Unlike some BMW cars, this grille is not too large and goes well with the overall proportions of the XB7. The large sculpted bumper houses the LED foglamps. A thin chrome line runs along the entire length of this bumper. The hood is long and seamlessly blends in with the roof of the XB7.

On the side, it boasts ALPINA-designed 21-inch alloy wheels as standard, and these can be upgraded to 23-inch alloy wheels as an option. Apart from that, the 2022 BMW Alpina XB7 gets soft close doors that shut gently no matter how hard you close it. At the rear, the slim LED taillights, the beefy bumper, and the ALPINA exhaust system with quad pipe exhausts give the XB7 a very sporty character.

The GLS is the heaviest car of the lot, weighing in at a hefty 6,085 lbs. The Urus is the lightest of the lot. Dimensionally, apart from the Rolls, the other three cars are quite similar. The Cullinan has the most length and width that is 7 inches more than the XB7. In terms of height, the GLS is the tallest. The Cullinan has the longest wheelbase of 130 inches, which is 7.8 inches longer than the Alpina's. The Urus gets the tightest wheelbase at 118.2 inches. Some standout exterior features include:

Safety
9.0/10

The 2022 BMW Alpina XB7 has not been tested for crashworthiness by NHTSA and the IIHS. However, BMW is well known for its safety systems, and the XB7 is packed with a host of advanced safety systems. The XB7 is based on BMW's CLAR platform, a modular platform that is made of steel, aluminum, and carbon fiber. This is the same platform that is used on the 2022 BMW X7. Some other primary safety features are listed below:

  • Active Blind-spot monitoring
  • BMW Assist eCall
  • Lane change and lane-keeping assist
  • Adaptive brake lights
  • Front collision warning with front collision mitigation
  • Parking plus assistant with surround-view cameras with a 3D view and active park distance control
  • Parking sensors
  • Automatic locking retractors on all seat belts

Competition
9.0/10

2022 BMW Alpina XB7 vs 2022 Mercedes-Maybach GLS

The 2022 Maybach GLS is a strong competitor for the XB7. Performance-wise, the Maybach version is nearly as fast as the XB7. Both the cars come with adjustable air suspension and have engaging driving dynamics. In terms of luxury, both cars are well-equipped with leather upholstery, captain chairs, heated seats, and soft-close doors. The XB7 gets an additional third row, whereas the Maybach GLS has more standard features overall. Both these SUVs are six-figures ballers, and the Maybach GLS is the better one of the two with the custom-built feel that the Alpina lacks.

2022 BMW Alpina XB7 vs 2022 Lamborghini Urus

The 2022 Lamborghini Urus is another rival for the luxury-rich XB7. The Urus is far ahead in terms of performance, with a 0-60 MPH time of 3.6 seconds against the XB7's 4.0 seconds. It handles sharper, and there's a constant sports car appeal in this SUV. The XB7 takes things with serene, due to its driving dynamics being on the softer side. On the inside, even though the Lambo is an Italian luxury icon, it is not as good as the Alpina in terms of standard features and levels of creature comforts offered. At $141,300, the Alpina XB7's complete deliverance as a luxury performance car makes it a better bargain over the Lamborghini Urus any day.

Final Verdict

At $141,300, the BMW XB7 Alpina packs in the right blend of performance, luxury, and comfort in this segment of full-size SUVs. That said, it also surprises you with its respectable fuel economy and exclusive details in the interior. On the whole, it is the perfect package and offers the excellent value-for-money for people who are looking for a three-row premium SUV with truckloads of performance on offer.
