Overall Rating
The biggest reveal for this year is the release of the first-ever M5 CS model with 627 hp and the capability to go from 0-60 mph in 2.9 seconds. The 2022 BMW M5 CS also gets M carbon seats, Nurburgring highlights, and 20-inch bronze-colored wheels. All this demands an MSRP of $142,000 for the 2022 M5 CS. As for the 2022 BMW M5 sedan, it will be a carryover model from 2021 with the same specs and no changes.
The 2022 BMW M5 is the most potent iteration of the 5-series and gets no major changes for this year, courtesy of its recent generation change that it received. For 2022 MY, however, BMW has added a high performance to its line-up, with the first-ever 627 hp 2022 BMW M5 CS, which has a 0-60 mph acceleration time of 2.9 seconds against the 3.2 seconds time on the standard M5. Prices for the 2022 M5 start from $103,500.
Released in March 2021, the BMW M5 is priced from $103,500 and comes in a single trim level. The M5 is powered by a twin-turbo 4.4L V8 engine and comes with xDrive (All-wheel-drive) as standard. The M5 faces competition against the Mercedes-Benz AMG E63 S, the Audi RS7, and the Cadillac CTS Blackwing.
Since the M5 is a standalone model, we recommend the basic M5 priced at $103,500 with a few other recommendations. We can suggest is the Executive Package that adds a lot of amenities like heater rear seats, ventilated front seats, and soft-close doors. The Driving Assistance Plus package adds upgraded driver-assistance features making the drive comparatively safer.

The 2022 BMW M5 is powered by the bombastic 4.4L Twin-Power Turbocharged V8 engine. This powertrain pumps out 600 hp and 553 lb-ft of torque. It comes hooked up to an 8-speed automatic transmission, giving the driver an option for manual shifting via the paddle shifters. The M5 also gets BMW's xDrive AWD as standard on every model, and there is also the option of converting the drivetrain into RWD for a more fun and enthralling driving experience around corners and on a track. The engine also gets an advanced cooling system along with a unique oil pan design to maintain constant pressure all the time.
The engine and gearbox combination work magic in the M5, and the most precise handling with the feedback-rich steering will sure cause an adrenaline rush. For more feel, paddle shifters are available as well. Throw 8-grand extra to pick up the Competition Package, and the power figures pump up to 617 hp. For 2022, the limited edition 2022 BMW M5 CS will satiate every desire for horsepower with 627 hp to boot. With the available drive modes, buyers will get the full chance to experience the fun of the drive that it is built to offer whilst setting the tracks on fire.
To test what the ride can offer you, turn on the Sport Plus mode and let it rip. The 2022 BMW M5 will thrust you back into the seats as the 600 ponies take over and complete the 0-60 mph sprint in 3.2 seconds. The quarter-mile takes just 10.9 seconds to come up. With the Competition Package, the added power drops the 0-60 mph time to 3.0 seconds. However, the 2022 BMW M5 CS sets the precedent with a 0-60 mph time of 2.9 seconds. It also packs beefy carbon-ceramic 15.6-inch and 15-inch brake rotors that allow it to stop from 60-0 mph in 97 feet.

All of the competitors in this lineup are respectable on their own. The yet-to-be-launched 2022 Cadillac CT5-V Blackwing is the most value-for-money offering with the most power and the lowest price. The Mercedes-AMG E63 S occupies the second spot with its power specs, and is also second in the 0-60 mph sprint. The Bimmer actually manages third place in the power specs but takes the top spot in a 0-60 mph sprint. The Audi RS 7 is the costliest one, and yet the least powerful in this lineup. However, it offers a better 0-60 mph time than the 2022 CT5-V Blackwing.
The 2022 BMW M5 returns one of the worst fuel efficiency figures even among performance sedans. This car returns 15 MPG in the city, 21 MPG on the highway, and 17 MPG combined. This comes coupled with a 20.1-gallon fuel tank which helps in getting a city range of 302 miles, and a highway range of 422 miles.
The EPA has also rated the Competition sedan and the CS at the same fuel efficiency levels, although we believe that the real-life fuel economy will be much lower than EPA's claimed figures. Fuel costs for the M5 sedan for five years with a yearly driving of 15,000 miles come around $3,500 per year.

Compared to the adversaries, the Mercedes-AMG E63 S manages to come out on top with the best MPG figures. The 2022 M5 and the Audi RS 7 tie in terms of combined gas mileage, however, the RS 7 races ahead with better highway MPG figures. The Cadillac CT5-V Blackwing sticks to the way of being a horsepower junkie, which results in a combined mileage of 16 MPG.
Apart from the BMW 7-Series, and the Alpina range, most Bimmers get a simple and minimalistic interior with a touch of luxury. However, that is not the case with the M5's interior. The interior is packed with top-of-the-line tech, loads of performance-centric buttons, and controls, and the quality and finish levels are excellent. The M-specific shifter and drive mode selector in the center console look stunning. The front seats offer ample room for even the tall guys, and occupants are treated with Merino leather upholstery and 3-stage heated seats with memory settings as standard fitment. Talk about spoiling someone.
Pop into the rear seats, and the longer wheelbase helps make space for the rear as well. Even if you are 6'2", you will still have ample space in the back. BMW offers ventilated front seats and heated rear seats, four-zone climate control, and power-operated rear window shades with the Executive package. With the 2022 M5 CS, things are taken up by a notch with the Carbon seats and Nurburgring highlights on the front. Furthermore, the 2022 BMW M5's cargo space of 14.0 cu-ft is quite practical, and is enough space for at least a month of household supplies. Get the irony?

Compared to its adversaries, the Cadillac CT5-V Blackwing seems to be the most spacious option but has the least cargo space at 11.9 cu-ft. The Audi RS 7 comes in next with the biggest cargo space and a comparably spacious interior. The M5 is actually in third place with the space it provides. The Mercedes-AMG E63 S has the least spacious cabin and one of the smaller cargo compartments. In terms of infotainment, the 2022 BMW M5 offers a 12.3-inch touchscreen system that is hooked up to a 16-speaker Harman Kardon Surround Sound System as standard.Â
It is seamlessly linked to the 12.3-inch digital driver display which runs the latest iteration of BMW iDrive 7.0. The UI of both screens is quite intuitive and easy to get used to. Responses to touch inputs are immediate, and the system is free from lag. All of the latest connectivity techs like Apple CarPlay, Amazon Alexa, and Android Auto come as standard along with Bluetooth and 4G LTE WiFi. Furthermore, in the Sport Plus mode, the system can also display the real-time performance stats on the driver's screen as well. Some of the most notable interior and infotainment features of the BMW M5 are:
Built on the same chrysalis of the 5-Series, the 2022 BMW M5 is all about stretching the boundaries, be it in terms of style or performance. The ride gets blacked-out wheels, grille, and a blacked-out roof as well. The LED headlamps were redesigned in 2021, and look a lot more aggressive than the standard 5-Series, and the programmable DRLs add to that premise. Furthermore, it also gets functional blacked-out vents in the front and side as well. Riding on 19-inch wheels, it also packs a decent ground clearance of 5.2-inches, which is enough to pass over most paved surfaces.
Quite like the front, the side silhouette seems reminiscent of the 5-Series while the rear houses the LED taillamps with a smoked-out look to them. There is M5 badging all around the exterior that easily makes it stand out. That being said, the biggest change will be the 2022 BMW M5 CS. The CS gets gold accents around the kidney grille, gold-colored rims, and matching gold colors in the DRLs. Though there are 12 colors available with the standard 2022 M5, the M5 CS takes it further by adding 3 more exclusive Brands Hatch colors. The M5 is 196 inches long, and has a long wheelbase of 117 inches.

The M5 is probably the most mean-looking car in the lot. It is also the lightest, though it may not look like it. On the other hand, the Audi RS 7 is the heaviest and also the longest one, with its definitive Sportback roofline. The Cadillac CT5-V Blackwing has the most compact built out of the competition and yet, has the most ground clearance of 5.3 inches. The AMG E63 S matches the BMW M5 in almost all aspects of dimensions but has about 2-inches smaller wheelbase, which aids its slightly more athletic driving prowess. Some of the exterior features seen on the 2022 BMW M5 are:
The BMW M5 has not yet been safety rated from either the NHTSA or the IIHS, and the 2022 M5 has not yet been safety rated as well. That being said, the M5 shares it's platform with the 5-series, which has scored an overall "Good" rating from the IIHS. As a result, a similar safety standard can be expected from the M5 as well.
BMW is also the pioneer in automotive safety tech, and it is only fitting that the 2022 M5 comes with the best features as standard. The sixth-gen M5 comes with the latest iteration of the BMW iDrive, and the Active Driving Assitance safety suite. Some of the most notable safety features of the BMW M5 are:
2022 BMW M5 vs 2022 Audi RS7
The Audi RS7 as well as the BMW M5 are both excellent-looking cars and have got stunning interiors as well, but we love the more practical design on the RS7. These two cars fare well in the technology and features as well, but the M5 is more equipped and loaded, and the infotainment is better on the M5. In terms of performance, these two cars are sufficiently quick, but the M5 is a tad bit faster than the RS7. Also, the M5 is a better car in terms of safety equipment. Overall, the M5 is a better car.
2022 BMW M5 vs 2021 Mercedes-Benz AMG E63 S
The Merc is probably the closest competitor to the M5. In terms of performance, the cars come might close, and they both come with a V8 and AWD that can be converted into RWD. The Merc E63 is more brutal and raw than the M5, but there's an excitement to that which does not feel uncharacteristic. The interiors offered are very similar, but the Merc is more spacious overall. Also, the Merc E63 is available in a wagon-style. Giving the advantage to the Merc for its comfortable interior, that is the one we recommend.
The BMW M5 certainly does not mince words as it goes all out in pursuit of glory. The M5 does everything the top 5-series does, but only better. A powerful motor, extremely engaging and pleasurable handling, superior looks, and a luxury interior make the M5 a very attractive option in the category of sport sedans. At $103,500, we believe the M5 is a special car that is worth all the money it asks.
