2022 BMW X3 Review

The 2022 BMW X3 receives a mid-cycle refresh with a redesigned exterior and interior, and new features. Released on 9 June 2021, it is available for sale in a standalone trim for a starting MSRP of $43,700 onwards with the same power specs owing to the 248-hp 2.0L turbo-4 engine. For the power lovers, the 382-hp X3 M40i, and the 473-hp X3 M also get the life cycle impulse. BMW has discontinued the X3 PHEV.

The 2022 BMW X3 gets a mid-cycle refresh this year as this SUV now gets a redesigned exterior, a reworked interior, and an updated optional features list. These features include a new 12.3-inch infotainment screen and digital gauge cluster and an M Sport package. More importantly, the X3 M40i gains a 48-volt hybrid system but it still makes 382 horses. Also, the plug-in hybrid xDrive30e has been discontinued.

The 2022 X3 now carries a starting price of $43,700. Available for sale in a standalone trim, the prices climb by just $700 from last year whilst retaining the 248-hp 2.0L turbo-4 unit from last year. The cabin remains a pleasant place with roomy seats and modern technologies. With these changes, it competes with other top sellers like the Audi Q5, the Volvo XC60, and the Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class.

Pricing and Features
8.0/10

Despite its upgrades, the 2022 BMW X3's $44,695 starting sum is a mere $700 more than last year's entry-level X3.- MotorTrend

The trim levels for the 2022 BMW X3 remain the same with one standalone trim available for sale. The sDrive30i is priced at $43,700 while the xDrive30i has an MSRP of $45,700. On top of that figure, $925 is levied as a destination fee. In case you are wondering, the 382-hp BMW X3 M40i and the 473-hp X3 M have price tags of $57,800 and $69,900 respectively.

BMW has stocked the X3 with plenty of features and yet, it offers a list of optional packages for an even plushier experience. The X3 is now available with an M Sport package with includes Shadowline exterior trim and 19-inch black alloy wheels. For $3,450, the Premium package adds a heated steering wheel, proximity keyless entry, head-up display, a panoramic sunroof, heated front seats, and gesture controls.

Buying Advice
7.0/10

Though the X3 is a classic ride with tons of features, we would recommend opting for the xDrive30i as it offers better handling characteristics thanks to the AWD. Despite having a slightly higher price, it offers the fun of a daily driver and the comfort of a highway cruiser in one cohesive package. We also advise opting for the Driving Assistance Professional and Parking Assistance packages.

Engine and Performance
7.5/10

Around town, the eight-speed transmission smartly keeps the four-cylinder engine right in the heart of its power delivery- Edmunds

The BMW X3 still gets the 2.0L turbo inline-4 engine that churns out 248 hp and 258 lb-ft. of torque, which is tamed by an 8-speed automatic transmission. The goodness from the engine is put on the wheels via the RWD drivetrain as standard. For the lovers of the xDrive AWD, you will have to shell out $2,000 extra. At its full capacity, the X3 can tow up to 4,400 pounds, which is good enough for towing trailers, ATVs, or boats.

The X3 has never disappointed when it comes to riding and handling characteristics and the LCI does not change that either. It feels stable and planted around sharp turns while the body movements are controlled nicely. Its steering feels precise at high speeds, however, the feedback could have been better. The standard suspension does a great job in delivering a smooth ride quality thanks to the multi-link rear suspension.

While the X3 is made to be a family car, gearheads cannot help revving it out every chance they get. It can zip to 60 MPH from a standstill in 6 seconds while the quarter-mile takes 14.9 seconds. The more powerful X3 M40i sprints to 60 MPH in an astounding 4.8 seconds. Pegged at a top speed of 130 MPH, the X3 also has beefed-up brake rotors. These brakes help the ride slow down from 60-0 MPH at a stopping distance of 114 feet.

In this lineup, the Volvo XC60 is the cheapest alternative with a decent performance streak but does seem like the slowpoke in terms of performance. The Audi Q5 is the costliest with the most power and backs itself up with the best acceleration times. The Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class is the second most powerful ride in the lineup and one of the top performers in acceleration.

Fuel Economy
8.5/10

It smooths the fuel-saving stop/restart function, allows the engine to coast under light loads- Kelly Blue Book

The fuel-efficient virtue of being a Bimmer is also very much still there. Thanks to the way the powertrain is engineered, the 2022 BMW X3 strikes a perfect balance between power and fuel economy. The X3 RWD returns 23 MPG in the city, 29 MPG on a highway, and 25 MPG combined. The AWD X3 losses out a few miles in the city, giving a combined 24 MPG.

So, even if you have a heavy foot, the X3 will return more than a decent fuel economy. Packed with a 17.2-gallon fuel tank, you can get an overall combined range of 430 miles at full capacity, which is decent for its class. The much efficient plug-in hybrid xDrive30e has been discontinued while the X3 M40i features a new 48-volt hybrid system for 2022 with no change in fuel economy.

In this lineup, the X3 finds no problems in cruising to victory lane as it offers the best MPG figures. The Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class's fuel efficiency is very close to the X3 but the Volvo XC60 is slightly less efficient. The same is the case for the Audi Q5 which offers 25 MPG combined but delivers the best range here.

Interior
8.0/10

The X3 now cribs its center console from the 4 Series, while reworked dashboard decor zhoosh up the insides of the SUV.- MotorTrend

Enter the interior of the 2022 BMW X3 and you will be greeted by the dual-tone color palette on the dashboard and the steering wheel. The steering wheel has been redesigned with more contours. The center console houses the wireless charging pad, haptic responsive controls for the drive modes, and the rotary dial for the infotainment system. Leatherette perforated seats are standard but genuine leather is available.

The seats are extremely comfortable and offer good under-thigh support. The excellent seating position also aids for good outward visibility. The front seats are 10-way power-adjustable and also include adjustable side bolsters. The rear seats have recline function and are very comfortable. The X3 is one of the most spacious compact SUVs in its class so you won't find a shortage of space in any row.

To cater to the utilitarian and practical side of things, the ride also offers a big cargo space in the lineup at 28.7 cu-ft, which is enough for almost 3 months of household supplies. You get a maximum space of 62.7 cu-ft. with the rear seats folded flat, which is one of the largest in its class. In terms of in-vehicular entertainment, the X3 also offers a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system with a 12-speaker Hi-Fi sound system.

BMW now offers a 12.3-inch infotainment screen and digital gauge display as optional upgrades. For those who take their music seriously, a Harman Kardon premium sound system with 16 speakers is also available as an add-on. The iDrive 7.0 UI is quite intuitive and easy to understand and use. There is a slight learning curve to it but is fairly straightforward overall. The system offers all the latest connectivity techs like Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Some other features include:

  • Tri-zone automatic climate control
  • Leather multi-function steering wheel
  • 10-way power front leatherette seats
  • Dark oak wood trim

Exterior
8.0/10

BMW has made a few changes to the X3 and X4 for 2022, including, for some reason, making the kidney grille bigger than before- CarAndDriver

With the mid-cycle refresh, the exterior of the 2022 BMW X3 pays homage to its predecessors. Looking closely, the exterior design has been subdued from the aggressive body language it had before. The grille is slightly bigger than the previous model. The LED headlamps bear a stark resemblance to the recently launched BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe with the way the LED DRLs are designed. Overall, the front end looks more aggressive and beautiful than ever.

Step onto the side, and the 19-inch alloy wheels have also been redesigned with a brand new design. Despite the bigger wheels, the ground clearance of the X3 remains the same at 8 inches. However, it certainly has packed more girth, almost 140 lbs to be precise. The overall dimensions remain the same, but the silhouette is more dominating and pronounced than before. At the back, the show remains equally spectacular with the LED Taillamps that help give off a remarkable road presence.

The Volvo XC60 offers the best ground clearance so riding on high bumps wouldn't be an issue while the Audi Q5 is the most compactly built vehicle overall. The Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class does not look like it but is actually the lightest ride of the lineup. This translates to an agile acceleration. Some other cool exterior highlights of the X3 are:

  • LED auto high-beam headlights
  • LED adaptive taillights
  • LED DRLs
  • Power-folding, heated exterior mirrors
  • Aluminum roof rails
  • Chrome grille
  • Black fender lip moldings
  • Dual exhaust chrome tips
  • Rear roofline spoiler
  • 18/19-inch alloy wheels

Safety
9.8/10

Driver aids are similarly impressive in scope- Edmunds

BMW sits as the epitome of safety and driver tech and the 2022 X3 certainly does not leave any stone unturned to keep its passengers safe. It carries a perfect 5-star safety rating from the NHTSA. It also received the highest rating of 'Good' for its crashworthiness. Altogether, the X3 scored respectable ratings and it is a safe vehicle.

BMW offers the X3 a host of active safety features that are offered as standard to keep its passengers safe. Some of the safety features are available by opting for the Driving Assistance Professional and Parking Assistance packages. The six airbags included also assist in the safety of the passengers. Some other features include:

  • Rear-view Camera with Front and Rear Park Distance Control
  • Active Protection System with Impact sensor
  • BMW Assist eCall with Emergency Request (SOS button)
  • Enhanced Automatic Collision Notification with Frontal Collision Warning

Competition
8.0/10

2022 BMW X3 vs 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class

The Mercedes Benz GLC-Class is the most luxurious ride in the lineup. Offering 255 horses on tap, it pursues performance whilst keeping its passengers comfortable in the interior. While its towing capacity is less than the Bimmer, the exhilarating driving experience is very much present. Owing to its smaller dimensions, the GLC-Class offers a smaller cargo bay as well. So, it boils down to a preference between luxury with performance or luxury with practicality here.

2022 BMW X3 vs 2022 Volvo XC60

The Volvo XC60 does not mince words either when it comes to offering interior luxury with practicality and comfort. Powered by a similarly sized engine, the XC60 offers more power and a bigger fuel tank capacity than the X3. However, its infotainment system lacks Apple CarPlay and it is not agile as the X3. In other aspects, it beats the Bavarian with more interior space, better safety tech, and more cargo space. The XC60 is definitely a good choice but speed lovers will prefer the X3.

2022 BMW X3 vs 2022 Audi Q5

The Audi Q5 is the most powerful ride in the lineup and also the most aggressive to look at. The performance will surely excite the senses. Furthermore, it offers a bigger fuel tank capacity with adequately respectable MPG figures when compared to the X3. Additionally, the interior also manages to match the Bavarian in terms of luxury whilst offering an equally technologically rich experience to the occupants but the cargo space is really less. It is equally competitive as the X3.

Final Verdict
8.5/10

The 2022 BMW X3 ticks all the boxes in terms of features, practicality, driver experience, and luxury with its comfortable interior. Furthermore, post the LCI, the exterior looks elegant yet modern which further enhances the ownership experience. Available for sale at a competitive price tag, the X3 is certainly worth buying if you are on the block for your next family car.
