Overall Rating
The 2022 Buick Encore now has a starting price of $24,600. The base trim has been dropped from the lineup and only Preferred trim is on sale. The power has been bumped up by 17 hp totaling 155 hp. Buyers looking for more peppy performance and interior space can take a look at the Encore GX.
The Encore is Buick's best-selling vehicle and to keep it competitive in the market, Buick has made some changes for 2022. The base trim has been dropped from the lineup and only Preferred trim is on sale. The power has been bumped up by 17 hp totaling 155 hp. In addition, front-seatback pockets are also added. Apart from the aforementioned changes, the Encore remains all too familiar.
The 2022 Encore now has a starting price of $24,600. Apart from cushioned ride quality, the Encore also offers an intuitive infotainment system but fails to offer enough rear-seat space, cargo capacity, and standard driver aids. Buyers looking for more peppy performance and interior space can take a look at the Encore GX. Some main rivals in its segment include the Mazda CX-30, Hyundai Kona, and Honda HR-V.
Since the 2022 Encore gets only one trim, it is the one we recommend because there’s no alternative available in the line-up. The trim is very well-equipped and ticks almost all the boxes for a comfortable crossover in the price segment. It is advised to equip the Safety Package and Safety Package II as the SUV lacks driver assistance features.

For 2022, the Encore is now only available in a single trim level, and some features have been removed or added to equipment packages- Edmunds
The Buick Encore has been seeing some slashing since the last few years and for 2022, gone is its base model. Only one trim exists for the 2022 model year which is Preferred. The FWD model is priced at $24,600 while the AWD configuration is available for just $620 extra. A destination charge of $1,195 will be applied separately.
Despite a lone trim offering though, the Preferred trim is very well endowed with the latest comfort features and facilities. Furthermore, it can also be enhanced by two packages - Safety Package and Safety Package II - that add various driver-assistance features to the equation. There are some other packages available that add a few accessories like cargo mats, floor mats, etc.

For shorter commutes, city jaunts and as an errand runner, the Encore succeeds- Kelly Blue Book
The 2022 Buick Encore carries forward its familiar 1.4L turbo inline-4 engine but with a twist. It now makes 17 hp and 29 lb-ft. of torque more than the outgoing model. As earlier, a 6-speed automatic transmission sends power either to the front or all four wheels. Power comes in smooth and quick and the 6-speed transmission feels refined and compliant in its duties.
The Encore isn't an engaging car to drive. The steering is accurate but it feels bland as it lacks proper feedback. Thanks to the soft suspension setup, the ride is plush and compliant. Its compact proportions make it a breeze to drive around the city and you can dip through gaps in traffic with no problem at all. The Encore does not feel agile at corners but body motions are controlled nicely.
With added power, the engine does feel more energetic and responsive, especially at city driving speeds. It completes the 0-60 MPH sprinting 8.4 seconds while the quarter-mile mark is covered in 16.6 seconds. In terms of braking, GM has tuned the brakes to react immediately once the pedal is pushed, which is a good thing. The SUV takes 126 feet to come to a smooth rest.

Among the competition, the Mazda CX-30 has the best power outputs for a lesser price. Obviously, its acceleration timings stand out in the table. The least powerful Honda HR-V has the slowest acceleration here but boasts great driving dynamics. Interestingly, the Hyundai Kona gives a good challenge to the Encore in terms of performance.
It fails to achieve the economy figures of several rivals- Carbuzz
Despite housing a small engine, the Buick Encore's fueled economy is one of the lowest in the class. It is rated at 24 MPG in the city, 32 MPG on a highway, and 27 MPG combined. Choose the AWD drivetrain and the fuel economy drops by 1 MPG in the city and 2 MPG on the highway, equating to 26 MPG combined.
Its rivals use a CVT transmission instead of a traditional automatic and hence, their MPG figures are much better. The Encore offers a fuel tank capacity of 14 gallons, which is the biggest fuel tank in its class and hence, lends this SUV decent range. It delivers a maximum combined range of 378 miles at its full capacity.

The Hyundai Kona leads the table with the best fuel estimates and driving range. The Honda HR-V is right behind it with slightly less fuel economy than the Kona. The Mazda CX-30 is much more efficient than the Encore despite making more power. The Encore sits in the last place with the lowest fuel efficiency.
You should be impressed by the Encore's handsome cabin, which features high-quality materials- Autotrader
The Buick Encore's cabin mostly feels similar to the Chevy Trac but there are some elements that make this car feel more premium. The soft touch points on the dashboard and leather steering wheel are among them. The placements of controls on the center console are also similar to the Trax. Now that the trims are cut off from the lineup, only leatherette upholstery is available.
The seats offer plenty of support upfront. There's a lot of adjustability to the driver's seat to attain a comfortable driving position. However, the narrow footprint of the Encore results in a lack of shoulder room. As you'd expect for a tall vehicle like this, headroom is superb. As for the back seats, they are a bit tight on legroom though headroom is fine. Still, the second row isn't great for adults.

The Encore might be a crossover but it's a really small crossover. So its trunk is also really small. With the back seats raised, you get just 18.8 cu-ft. and the space available is narrow. You can fold the rear seats to expose 48.4 cu-ft. of space, which is less than the competition. An 8-inch touchscreen is fitted at the center of the dashboard for entertainment duties. Both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are standard fitments.
Its plain and simple graphics are the prettiest you can find in a modern car. The only gripe we have with Buick infotainment is the fact that they are almost indistinguishable from the cheaper Chevy cars, which isn’t exactly what one would expect from a “luxury” brand. The system is paired with a 6-speaker audio system, whose sound quality is decent. The physical knobs for volume and climate controls are available. Some other cabin highlights are:
At 14 feet long, the Buick Encore takes up less space than most of its rivals- Kelly Blue Book
The Buick Encore is a cute little crossover at best that resembles its Chevy cousins more than the bigger Buicks that it shares its badge with. It looks sharper and bolder from almost every angle. It still gets the waterfall grille with chrome accents running through it. Halogen headlights are standard but you do get LED DRLs for a sleeker look.
You would rarely see an SUV on the road that was last facelifted in 2017 and still looks remarkably stylish. The Encore's narrow upright proportions are a little dorky but the tidy nose and grille, stylish 18-inch wheels, and understated use of chrome landed a premium look without going overboard. The rear end looks much more mature than its rivals.

The Mazda CX-30 has a really high ground clearance for a subcompact SUV. That's good enough to prevent the underbelly from being scraped. The short proportions of the Hyundai Kona will aid in easy maneuverability. The Honda HR-V weighs the lowest here and yet, its acceleration is slower than the Encore. Some other exterior features include:
Mixed reviews from the two U.S. crash-test agencies and a dearth of driver-assistance tech make the Encore a disappointing choice for safety- CarAndDriver
According to NHTSA, the 2022 Buick Encore scored a perfect 5-star rating. On the other hand, IIHS gave 'average ratings. It scored a 'Good' rating in five crash tests and an 'Acceptable' rating in two crash tests. However. for crash avoidance, the Encore scored the lowest 'Basic' rating while the headlights were rated 'Marginal', which is disappointing.
The main reason for average safety ratings by IIHS is due to the lack of standard driver-assist features. The Safety Package and Safety Package II add some safety technologies but there's one catch. You need to equip the Safety Package first in order to spec the Safety Package II. Some other safety features include:
The Mazda CX-30 overtakes the Encore in many areas. It is much quicker on the road thanks to its punchy engine and livelier handling. Moreover, its optional engine has loads of power for a subcompact SUV. The CX-30's cabin feels upscale and spacious but on the cargo department, the Encore takes the lead. Safety-conscious buyers will definitely pick the CX-30 as plenty of standard driver aids.
The Honda HR-V comes with limited standard features and an underpowered base engine. On the bright side, it is more engaging to drive and more fuel-efficient than the Encore. Both the SUVs are similarly roomy but the HR-V's cargo space is greater and another highlight is its rear Magic Seat. The safety ratings and features are better in the HR-V so clearly it is the better pick among the two.
There are plenty of reasons to choose the Hyundai Kona over the Encore. It costs nearly $3,500 cheaper than the Encore. All three engines available are peppier and it also boasts superb gas mileage. The Kona has a nice interior with better quality materials. It also benefits from a longer warranty and more standard safety technologies. The only advantage of the Encore is more cargo space
GM took a great step by increasing the horsepower of the 2022 Encore but still, it's not a value-for-money car. It does offer a cushioned ride quality and a spacious interior but its rivals counter it with better quality interiors, fuel economy, and more standard safety technologies. Moreover, its initial price is a bit high for a subcompact SUV. All these factors lead the Encore to rank at the bottom.
