The 2022 Cadillac XT5 is one of the long-standing offerings from the brand and the crossover SUV space. It has circulated in the same model year as it was introduced in 2017.
The 2022 Cadillac XT5 is one of the long-standing offerings from the brand and the crossover SUV space. It has circulated in the same model year as it was introduced in 2017. However, it is still a modern SUV with lots of features and technology. It is a package that is designed to give you the luxury you expect from the Cadillac Escalade in a much smaller and modern-looking package. In this Cadillac XT5 review, we attempt to give you as comprehensive a review of the vehicle as possible.
We find the base engine and trim to be too simple and plain Jane to justify the investment that comes on it. The mid-level Premium Luxury trim aims to provide very good value and is a much more luxurious car overall than the base trim. It offers you features such as automatic wipers, panoramic sunroof, hands-free liftgate, power-adjustable heated steering wheel, leather upholstery, interior ambient lighting and so on which make the experience a lot more plush. The Sport trim gets a few updates this year and becomes desirable but however, the car is not very sporty overall. Hence the promises fall short and it is likely that people will be disappointed with this.

There are three trim levels offered with the latest generation of Cadillac’s crossover SUV and these are called Luxury, Premium Luxury, and Sport. These are in fact similar in most Cadillac models today. Price starts at MSRP $46,190 for the lowest trim and goes all the way up until $57,290 for the Sport trim with the 3.6 L engine and all-wheel drive. It is hardly the cheapest Cadillac available now but does have a lot going for it. Between the two engines, the 2 L definitely feels underpowered, and not many owners are happy with it. However, one of the biggest plus points is that the 3.6 is not offered at a very high price and hence most people can afford to upgrade to it.

Which trim should you buy?
We find the base engine and trim to be too simple and plain Jane to justify the investment that comes on it. It offers you features such as automatic wipers, panoramic sunroof, hands-free liftgate, power-adjustable heated steering wheel, leather upholstery, interior ambient lighting and so on which make the experience a lot more plush. Cadillac has already announced the pricing and updates for the 2022 model year of the XT5 SUV. However, there has been no official word on when exactly this car would reach customers in the US. As part of official releases so far, we expect that this date might be around early 2022. There have been no confirmations from the brand but we understand the delay as there have been several issues in the supply chain for most automotive manufacturers. We request you to contact your nearest dealerships to know more concrete information about the exact details regarding the availability of these cars.
With the Cadillac XT 5, you are given the option of two engines. The base engine is a 2 L in-line turbocharged four-cylinder engine that is adequately powerful. This engine is good for 235 hp and 258 lb.-ft. of torque but they don’t make the car feel very involved. The transmission offered is a nine-speed automatic transmission while front-wheel-drive is the powertrain option as standard. If you want all-wheel drive, you can get it for an additional $2000. Apart from this, there is a single 3.6 L V6 engine offered that produces 310 hp. The Cadillac does not promise a lot in terms of handling but what makes it worse is that the car does not have excellent ride quality either.
If you equip the car with the optional 20-inch wheels, the ride quality is very bad. The cabin is decently insulated but vibrations are harsh. When it comes to acceleration figures the Cadillac performs adequately well with the 7.6 seconds 0 to 60 mph time as well as a 16-second quarter-mile time. However, the car is no good when you run out of the road and most of its rivals are better off-roaders than this. The acceleration figures are decent but that is not mean the car is any fun to drive. It is not very engaging and the steering feel is bad. Also, its rivals are simply that much more effective as performance machines not just in terms of acceleration but also braking. This leaves owners of the Cadillac XT 5 with a lot to be desired in terms of performance.

Although all four cars in this category are evenly matched in terms of price, the Cadillac is still one of the most expensive ones in this category. The Infiniti might not have the brand image of some of the competitors but it does a good job of pricing the car very reasonably and hence staying relevant to the competition. The BMW gives you the best acceleration and also a value for money package for the price. On paper, the Cadillac is competitive and next to its rivals but when it comes to real-world figures, it is the lowest both in terms of top speed and acceleration. In short, if you’re looking for performance you have to look at elsewhere.
Since we find that the Cadillac EXT 5 is not exactly to the performance we would expect that it has class-leading fuel efficiency numbers to compensate. However, that is not the case and its fuel economy is also subpar when compared. The 2 L engine from Cadillac returns 22 MPG in the city, 29 MPG on the highway, and 24 MPG in the combined cycle which is acceptable although not too impressive. However, one thing the brand has done right is that it has provided a sufficiently large fuel tank of 19.4 gallons. As a result of this, the car has a range of 562 miles on the highway and 426 miles inside the city. Things don’t exactly improve with a 3.6 L V6 as MPG ratings drop by 3 MPG across the board.

When it comes to fuel efficiency, we can see that the Infiniti has built the lead for itself. The BMW is right behind it. However, the competitors with the larger fuel tanks managed to score better in terms of fuel efficiency. The Volvo XC 60 has the least efficiency figures but has made up places with its large 18.8 gallons fuel tank. As a result of this, this car has the second-highest range in this category. The Cadillac has the highest range despite having low fuel efficiency. Therefore, in our eyes, the clear winner here is the BMW.
The interiors of the XT5 are decent but not according to the standards of the class. It has several good materials but overall, the design seems to lack in some areas and feels uninspired in general. Although it does have soft-touch materials here and there, there are plastic bits that stick out like a sore thumb and bring down the overall quality of the interiors. However, most controls are easily accessible and ergonomics are fairly decent inside. There is an adequate amount of cubbyholes and other storage spaces inside.
One of its strengths is that it performs well in terms of cargo capacity with 30.2 ft.³ of storage. In terms of interior space, the car feels very roomy and that is definitely a plus point. The Cadillac had a major design update in the year 2020 and this has brought things out to be more competitive. In terms of overall fit and finish, it does not live up to the name of the brand. Even though the company aims to provide you a scaled-down version of the Escalade, we feel that pursuit has mostly been less than successful. One of its most practical bits is the easy folding rear seat which can free up a lot of cargo space.

The Cadillac, just like every other competitor offers seating for five people with ease. The interior space of all the cars is very much evenly matched but the final laugh is from the Cadillac because of its superior rear legroom. However, the Infiniti has excellent cargo space that totally blows the competition out of the water. We would say that the XT5 is the only car that remains competitive with the Infiniti. The Volvo has the lowest cargo space but even this is not deprived by a lot. Its 25.1 ft.³ of storage is enough for most applications. Some standard features include:
There is less definitely a lot of tech inside the Cadillac XT5 and the infotainment system is definitely one of its strengths. Even though all trims come with a small 8-inch touchscreen system, it looks nice and well-integrated in the dashboard. Interaction with the system is also quite easy and the control is very intuitive and includes even a rotary button. The 2022 Cadillac CUE software also allows wireless integration of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto which makes your job very easy. There is also an excellent 14 speaker Bose audio system which delivers excellent quality audio. Other features include built-in navigation, wireless charging, satellite radio, a Wi-Fi hotspot, and so on. There are plenty of infotainment features that include charging for mobile devices, digital drivers display and so on. Some features of the infotainment system include:
USB Ports (4+2 Auxiliary Power Outlets), Universal Home Remote
Cadillac Connected Access with 4G LTE Wi-Fi Hotspot and OnStar services
The looks of the Cadillac XT 5 can be termed as attractive and definitely do not look like they belong to a car that was released in 2017. It looks much more modern and sharp, retaining very distinct lights from Cadillac. The grill and other parts of the car are very iconic. There is heavy use of LED lighting all around and that makes the car feel quite premium. Also, these SUVs not feel as big or bulky as the Escalade which is a good thing. The company has also managed to keep weight on the lower side.

The Cadillac is in fact a lot bigger than its competitors in terms of all dimensions. In fact, the only place the rivals have an advantage is in terms of ground clearance where they have approximately half an inch more which is not a lot either. But what is truly impressive is that it is the lightest car in the segment at 3915 pounds whereas the Volvo is the heaviest at 4105 pounds it is also quite ironic then that the Volvo is also the smallest car if you look at the dimensions. Some standout features include:
The Cadillac XT5 scored an excellent five stars overall safety rating from the NHTSA which is the highest honor from the organization. It has also performed very well in that test conducted by the IIHS. It does not just pack passive safety features but also several active safety features like forward collision warning, automated emergency braking, and so on as standard. There is a ton of safety features and the structural engineering behind this car is also amazing. Some of the standout safety features include:
The BMW X3 is one of the established competitors in the segment. The car is cheaper, faster, the interiors are better, and outperforms the Cadillac in literally every segment. It is also fuel-efficient and hence cheaper to run. In terms of overall fit and finish, the German is much better put together as well. We feel there is no reason to not pick this German as it is a much better car.
The Infiniti QX50 is a very compelling option because of how much cheaper it is. And yet, it performs better, has better-looking interiors as well as excellent fuel efficiency. In terms of convenience features and infotainment, the Cadillac is on par with the Infiniti. However, if you look at it financially, it does not offer you anything more. For the price of the Cadillac, you could properly equip your Infiniti with all the niceties you need.
The Volvo XC60 is undoubtedly the safest option in this segment as the company is known for its innovations in the field of safety. The XC60 is aging a bit and is also a bit lackluster to drive and while we cannot write home about the driving dynamics of the Cadillac, it is still a better pick than the Volvo if you enjoy driving. And since the costs are nearly the same in the Volvo offers you lower fuel efficiency, we would pick the Cadillac.
The 2022 Cadillac XT5 is a good car if you look at it individually but it does not live up to the promises its brand makes. It is not the most powerful or the most exciting car in the segment and fails to deliver in terms of luxury as well. It is definitely not a toned-down version of the Cadillac Escalade either. And considering that the model has been around for a while, it definitely has not managed to price the vehicle in a competitive manner this competition. Overall, this is not a very attractive car to us and we would rather skip it in favor of one of its competitors.
