Overall Rating
Electric vehicles have been getting ubiquitous and manufacturers have been rushing with their latest products. The 2022 Chevrolet Bolt EUV marks the first electric SUV from the brand and is a fun twist on the ever practical Chevrolet Bolt EV.
Electric vehicles have been getting ubiquitous and manufacturers have been rushing with their latest products. The 2022 Chevrolet Bolt EUV marks the first electric SUV from the brand and is a fun twist on the ever practical Chevrolet Bolt EV. It is offered as a crossover SUV that is based on the board hatchback itself. It gets a lot more space and technology enhancements as well as convenience features that the smaller sibling does not get. It offers effortlessly quick acceleration and impressive range that has left aspiring buyers as well as buyers very much impressed.
We find the base trim level itself well equipped as well as mechanically capable. However, like combustion engined cars you cannot get the higher trim level with higher performance. All the cars are powered by a same battery and motor. We feel that the Launch Edition is definitely the pick of the lot even at the higher price. Although it is $10,000 more expensive than the base trim, it definitely has the choicest features out of the lot. It also has a sunroof and unique wheel design that makes it stand out aesthetically from the rest of the Chevrolet Bolt EUV line-up as well. If you get this trim, you do not have to bother checking any of the optional equipment boxes.

In terms of the release date, nothing has been confirmed by Chevrolet as of yet. The 2022 version of the car has had its production delayed by almost 3 months now. This is happened due to the semiconductor chip shortage as we all know. This puts a lot of buyers in a position of unrest as they have been eagerly waiting for the car. Deliveries will be delayed even further as it will take furthermore for the car to reach dealerships. However, we still expect to the Chevrolet Bolt EUV will follow the same model year rollover sequence as the rest of the GM portfolio. We are expecting that the 2022 model of the Chevrolet Bolt EUV will reach showrooms by the end of this year. Deliveries are also expected to start soon after that. The car is not expected to carry forward with any changes.
We do not discuss and electric cars as enthusiastically in terms of the powertrain department as we do IC engines. Buyers are yet to familiarize with the technology that goes behind electric cars to actually know differences between the types of motors or battery management systems. The Chevrolet Bolt EUV is a front-wheel-drive powertrain layout and has a one speed direct drive gearbox that supplies power to its front wheels only at all times. The motor is a permanent magnet synchronous AC motor, and the transmission is the one-speed direct drive system like we have mentioned. One can observe that this is the exact same transmission that you can find in all the competitors of this car as well. The battery is the 65 kWh lithium-ion battery that is placed under the floor of the vehicle.
Acceleration figures are impressive with 6.7 second 0 to 60 mph time as well as a 15.2 second quarter mile drag time. This means that the car is a rather fast as is the case with most electric vehicles being able to deploy large amounts of torque at lower rpms. Combine this with decent handling, and the car is in fact very pleasant to drive. The tires can be much better, but the handling is not exactly the reason why people buy cars like these. The ride quality is quite nice and absorbs bumps and potholes rather well. It does not have much steering feel or chassis balance but one should definitely imagine that these are not areas that buyers of this category prioritize much. There is good amount of straight-line stability and the regenerative braking works very well.

The Tesla is the fastest car in its class, both on paper as well as in real life. This manufacturer has been in the business of making electric vehicles for so long that they managed to undercut the price as well making it the best car for the job. In terms of performance, the Nissan Leaf is the most uninspiring one and has the worst performance of this lot. The Hyundai Kona electric is surprisingly a good performer and is exactly on par with the Chevrolet Bolt EUV. The acceleration of the Bolt is on the slower side when compared to other vehicles in the class.
One of the good things about the new set of electric vehicles is that they come with excellent fuel economy. One can say the same about the Chevrolet Bolt EUV as it returns 127 MPGe in the city, 108 MPGe on the highway, and 118 MPGe combined. We have mentioned how it has a battery capacity of 65 kWh and this is sufficiently large for its use case. In terms of the range, it is quite impressive with an estimated range of about 250 miles which is exactly what the rest of its competition gives you. Chevrolet has employed sufficiently good technology for charging and the Chevrolet Bolt EUV can do a full charge in just seven hours.

We can see that the Tesla Model 3 again takes the cake when it comes to fuel efficiency. One can clearly see that Tesla is far ahead of most manufacturers in terms of battery technology right here. The Nissan Leaf has a lot of ground to catch up in terms of this aspect as well. And like before, the Hyundai and the Chevrolet are very evenly matched again. We feel that although the Chevrolet does not have the fuel efficiency to match the Tesla, it is still a very much usable car and will return you more than adequate figures for daily driving.
Chevrolet has not fallen into the trap of keeping their EV’s interiors as minimalistic as possible. The brand has given the cabin a very good identity while not falling prey to the extremely minimalistic design philosophy that manufacturers like Tesla employ. The material quality is also quite nice and the ergonomics of this cabin are better than most of its rivals. It also seats five people with ease and that is a lot of space in every single row in this car. The rear legroom is especially roomy and people with a larger frame scan fit very easily. It performs a bit shabbily in terms of cargo capacity with just 16.9 ft.³ of storage.
In terms of interior space, however, the car feels like one of the largest ones in its class. There are enough storage spaces inside for most stuff, and the cargo capacity can be adjusted by folding the seats and making room for more. The interior material quality is not the best we’ve seen but it is definitely very much acceptable for something that comes for this price. Overall, we feel the Chevrolet Bolt EUV’s interiors are nice.

We find that the Chevrolet has a really spacious interior when compared to any other car in this category. The Nissan offers the best cargo capacity, while the Tesla is only on par with the Chevrolet, both having the lowest space. The Tesla has a lot of compromises in terms of the fit and finish inside but in terms of features, the Tesla impresses a lot. If you want a practical pick among these, we would definitely go with the Chevrolet. Some standard features include:
Being completely brand-new for the model year 2022, this car has excellent infotainment features. It comes with both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto that can be wirelessly integrated. The touchscreen is very large and the car also comes with a large digital gauge display for the driver. Sound system is only decent and definitely can have some improvement. The car is smart enough to communicate with the driver using a smart phone app. Some features of the infotainment system include:
In terms of looks, the Chevrolet Bolt EUV is one of the brand's best designs according to us. Not only does it look significantly better than the Chevrolet Bolt EV that it is based on, it looks good enough to grab attention no matter what crowd it is in. It not only gives the impression that it is a much larger car, but it also provides most of that sophisticated nature of the brand at a very competitive price tag. The design details are modern while also remaining adequately conservative to not throw people off with quirky details. Will attract buyers because it looks stunning both inside and outside.

It is not very hard to find that Tesla is much larger than any of its competitors. It has the longest wheelbase as well as the largest dimensions in every single aspect. On the other hand, the Chevrolet Bolt EUV is on the smaller side of this category. And yet, the Tesla manages to be not much heavier than the competitors, which is an impressive feat. The Hyundai is on the heavier side of this category but not by much. The Chevrolet has a long wheelbase which has helped it free up a lot of interior space. Some standout features include:
In terms of safety, Chevrolet has constantly innovated and brought new technology to the fore. Being a 2022 model the Chevrolet Bolt EUV has not yet published its crash test results from either agency. However, we know that it is based on the Chevrolet Bolt EV platform which has managed a five star safety rating under the NHTSA tests. It has not only passive safety features but even has active safety features as standard such as automated emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, and so on available. Hence we can assume that it is a safe car despite the unavailability of test results. Some of the standout safety features include:
The Nissan Leaf is a dated design that has begun to feel its age. It also performs much worse compared to the rest of its category in all aspects. The car fails to impress when you compare it with the Chevrolet Bolt EUV in every single way. It fails to have the performance, features, or technology despite being priced at a premium. It also has worse fuel efficiency figures as one can observe. All in all, it would be a no brainer to choose Chevrolet Bolt EUV over the much more inferior Nissan Leaf.
The Tesla Model 3 is now a ubiquitous small electric vehicle. As we have observed, it is much larger than any of its competition but does not have this advantage in terms of interior space. The Chevrolet has arguably better design as well as the convenience of being very tiny and yet offering excellent interior space. But in terms of performance and efficiency, it is the Tesla that has the upper hand over the Chevrolet.
The Hyundai Kona electric is one of the best offerings from the brand in recent times. We find that buyers who were not previously interested have also started flooding Hyundai showrooms with their money because the car is actually pretty nice. It is evenly matched when it comes to performance but has far less interior space when you compare it to the Chevrolet. Our money would be on the Chevrolet Bolt EUV itself.
The 2022 Chevrolet Bolt EUV is an excellent buy because it provides an entry into the electric SUV segment without having to spend much. It is based on a known platform, the Chevrolet Bolt EV. It promises the best of electronic technology in the automotive world and manages to pack a lot of value for its price point as well. It is not the highest performing car in its category are anything close to fast is a good family car. The only disadvantage would be that it is subject to very huge waiting periods, and if Chevrolet manages to speed up that process, the car would find more buyers.
