Pricing and Features
8.0/10

The ZL1 trim is the topmost trim of the Camaro lineup that enjoys the highest power output and a wide range of features. As a result of all this, the ZL1 trim is treated as a separate model in its lineup due to its superior performance characteristics compared to all the other trims. The ZL1 trim is priced around $63,000 for the manual transmission variant whereas for the automatic variant it will be priced around $67,890. Some other standard features of the Camaro ZL1 include Launch Control, Driver selector mode, RECARO performance front bucket seats, remote start, an 8-way power front passenger seat, 8-inch diagonal HD touchscreen, Chevrolet Infotainment 3 Plus system, and many more.

2022 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 Coupe Release date

Chevrolet has already announced the pricing and updates for the 2022 model year of the Camaro ZL1. However, there has been no official word on when exactly this car would reach us, customers. As part of official releases so far, we expect that this date might be around early 2022. There have been no confirmations from the brand but we understand the delay as there have been several issues in the supply chain for most automotive manufacturers. We request you to contact your nearest dealerships to know more concrete information about the exact details regarding the availability of these cars.

Engine and Performance
9.0/10

The Chevy Camaro ZL1 is an iconic coupe and is powered by a 6.2 L Supercharged V8 direct injection engine. This mammoth engine fitted inside the Camaro ZL1 makes around 650 horses and 650 lb-ft of torque. This powertrain is mated to a 6-speed manual transmission as standard but a 10-speed automatic variant is also available for buyers at an additional cost of around $2,000. The abovementioned power figures are enough to tell you how much capability it holds which is directly reflected in its acceleration timings. The 2022 Camaro ZL1 can sprint from a standstill to 60mph in just 3.5 secs which is insanely fast and very few vehicles can achieve it.

Talking about its drivetrain, it comes with RWD as standard which is very typical in high-performance cars. In its segment, the Camaro does an incredible job in terms of performance but it cannot be crowned as the best. Some of its rivals can beast those figures and acceleration timings. The car is extremely enjoyable in terms of the way it drives which perfectly suits the power it holds. The interior seating arrangement supports the driver well. The steering is precise and it also feels in control at high speeds. The transmission system is impeccable, especially the automatic variant which is smooth in shifting either way. The braking potential is good enough and it feels very responsive. When the brake is applied at full force, it comes to a complete stop from 60MPH in just 91 feet which is impressive.

The Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 here is the most expensive compared to others who are almost $7,000 cheaper on average. But, the power figures and on-road performance of the Mustang completely justify its price. The 2022 Mustang GT500 makes around 110 more horses compared to the Camaro ZL1. The Challenger SRT Hellcat Widebody is again quite impressive in terms of power figures but it is still less than the Ford. The Lexus has much lower power figures but surprisingly, its performance is not that far off from anything in this segment.

Fuel Economy
6.0/10

From a high-performance coupe like the Camaro ZL1, you cannot expect much in terms of fuel economy. But, compared to other muscle cars in its segment, the 2022 Camaro ZL1 coupe is the one that would give you the highest MPG ratings. The vehicle can give you around 14 miles in the city on a single gallon of gas, and up to 20 miles on the highway. Its fuel tank capacity is again 19 gallons, which is the largest in the segment and will provide you with the greatest driving range.

The fuel economy of the 2022 Camaro ZL1 remains great in this segment but it does get tough competition from the Challenger SRT Hellcat. The Camaro ZL1 offers a better MPG rating in the city while the Dodge offers better MPG figures on the highway. Also, because of its much larger fuel tank, it gives the highest overall range too. However, if you look outside the muscle cars, you will find that the Lexus RC F absolutely wipes the floor with the Camaro in this department.

Interior
7.5/10

In terms of the interior, the Camaro has some bad sides as is often the case with a performance car. It is very difficult to maneuver it around tight spots and crowded areas due to the low visibility from the front. Cabin layout is very driver-centric, so operating controls from the driver's perspective won't be too difficult. The front seats are Recaro performance seats that have heating and ventilation functions as well. Moreover, they are 8-way power-adjustable. This makes for a rather comfortable setup.

Besides fine leather, there are also Alcantara inserts, giving it a perfect look. Regarding space, it is sufficient for two people in the front row. However, the rear seats are cramped. As a result, adults aren't recommended to sit behind. The Chevy Camaro ZL1 offers only 9.1 cubic feet of space behind the rear seats, which again is the lowest in its class, and only small luggage can be stored there. But then again, these are hardly the parameters cars of this performance calibre should be judged by.

In terms of overall practicality, the 2022 Challenger SRT Hellcat Widebody here beats all the other coupes because of its efficient cabin spacing and big cargo space. This vehicle offers 7 cubic feet more cargo space than the Camaro which is almost double. Also, the rear row seating space of the Challenger SRT Hellcat is way bigger than the Camaro ZL1 and Mustang GT 500. It can seat 5 people as opposed to 4 on the other two rivals. The Lexus has the worst rear leg room in this segment but has the nicest and highest quality interiors otherwise.

Standout interior features:

  • Dual-Zone Automatic Climate Control
  • 8-way power driver and 6-way power passenger seats
  • Heated and ventilated front seats
  • Leather-trimmed with suede inserts
  • Front bucket RECARO performance seats
  • Remote Keyless Entry

All the Camaro trims come with an 8” touchscreen display which can also be found on the ZL1 trim. This vehicle comes equipped with Chevrolet's Infotainment System 3, which is good and does not experience any lag. But, the screen is placed at a very weird angle in the dashboard. While it does look visually appealing, it may not be liked by many. Chevy included Apple Carplay and Android Auto for the 2021 model year, so this will be a standard feature for this year as well.

In terms of audio, the cabin is fitted with a 9-speaker premium Bose system which is enough to amp up the small cabin of this car. Some other features include voice recognition, in-vehicle apps, cloud-connected personalization for select infotainment, and vehicle settings. Also, in the ZL1 trim, you can choose to upgrade to the premium Chevy Infotainment System which adds navigation enhanced voice recognition, SiriusXM Satellite radio, Bluetooth audio streaming for 2 active devices to the list of tech features.

Standout infotainment features:

  • 8” Central touchscreen display
  • Apple Carplay & Android Auto
  • 4G LTE Wifi Hotspot
  • 9-speaker Bose premium sound system
  • Navigation (Optional)
  • Sirius XM Radio (Optional)
  • Voice Recognition system

Exterior
8.0/10

The 2022 Chevy Camaro ZL1 is a good-looking American muscle car that appeals to many in terms of its design and overall road presence. The ZL1 trim looks much better than the regular trims because it comes with some distinctive design elements which make it look more sporty and aggressive. The front fascia features a unique hood design along with a front spoiler and ZL1 trim badging that are placed in the right corner of the grille. Also, the Camaro ZL1 rides on forged 20” alloy wheels which can further be upgraded with the 1LE package. The ZL 1LE package also adds Goodyear performance tires, canards and a carbon fiber rear wing making it look more sporty.

The 2022 Chevy Camaro ZL1 is the lightest in terms of bodyweight in this segment but that doesn’t mean it holds any significant advantage over other rivals. The Camaro has the lowest ground clearance here whereas the Challenger SRT Hellcat Widebody offers the highest measuring 4.5 inches. The wheelbase of the Dodge is the highest in its segment that helps it to give more space inside its cabin which is a plus for the said coupe. The Dodge is much heavier than most of the competition and it seriously needs to go on a diet to remain sporty.

Standout exterior features:

  • ZL1 trim specific badging
  • LED Headlamps and DRLs
  • Heated power-adjustable and driver-side auto-dimming mirrors
  • 20" alloy wheels
  • Aerodynamic rear wing
  • Front splitter and canards

Safety
8.0/10

The NHTSA has given the base Camaro an overall 5 out of 5 stars for its safety. Also, it is equipped with some of the industry-leading advanced safety gear that ensures a safe ride. Also, by spending a bit more, you can further equip your Camaro with some more safety features to further raise the overall safety quotient.

Standout safety features:

  • Tire Pressure Monitoring System
  • Forward Collision Alert
  • Lane Change Alert
  • Side Blind Zone Alert
  • Rear Cross-Traffic Alert
  • Rear Park Assist and HD Rear Vision Camera
  • Teen Driver mode
  • Automatic Braking Assist

2022 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 vs 2022 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500

The Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 is a big name in this segment and it is the toughest competitor to the Camaro ZL1. The Mustang GT500 is almost $6500 more expensive than the Camaro ZL1 but buyers are ready to pay for that extra 110 hp and quicker acceleration. The Camaro on the other hand offers better fuel economy but lacks the practicality offered by the Mustang. Although the Chevy here looks like a much better choice considering its price, the Mustang is great too. It is still loved by many and it justifies its price with extra performance figures and overall characteristics which still feel superior.

2022 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 vs 2022 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat Widebody

In terms of price, the Challenger SRT Hellcat Widebody is very competitive with the Camaro ZL1, where the former is a bit less expensive. This Dodge easily beats the Chevy when it comes to practicality and cabin space but those are the only areas where it leads. Also, the power figures of the Challenger SRT Hellcat Widebody are ahead of that of the Camaro ZL1 by almost 70 horses which is a positive. On paper. But both of their acceleration timing is almost similar. The Camaro has much better driving dynamics, nicer interiors and is a better car overall.

2022 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 vs 2022 Lexus RC F Coupe

The Lexus RC F is an excellent deal at the price it is offered at. It is not only cheaper but also has an incredibly characterful V-8 engine that is a marvel of engineering. But even though the Lexus is absolutely stunning, the Camaro offers more performance without a doubt. The Lexus also offers much better fuel efficiency and luxury in its interiors and hence is much more desirable as a car for everyday use. Overall, one can definitely have a lot of confusion over the two but they appeal to two very different kinds of buyers.

Final Verdict

It is undeniably true that the 2022 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 is a terrific muscle car for most buyers in its segment. Apart from its incredible power figures, its exterior styling is captivating and can't be overlooked. Furthermore, it is one of the most economical in its category, a factor that gives it an advantage over the competitors. It is a fairly modern supercar beater that you can easily live with without burning a hole in your pocket. For those who can increase their budgets a bit, we would recommend opting for the Ford Mustang GT500.
