About 2022 Chevrolet Camaro

3.6

Overall Rating

Muscle cars and smaller Pony cars were America’s one of the best gifts to the automotive industry and enthusiasts across the globe. Among the iconic brands responsible for that are Chevrolet, Dodge, and Ford.

Muscle cars and smaller Pony cars were America’s one of the best gifts to the automotive industry and enthusiasts across the globe. Among the iconic brands responsible for that are Chevrolet, Dodge, and Ford. The Chevrolet Camaro ranks among the most favorite coupes alongside the legendary Dodge Challenger and the Ford Mustang. Introduced in 1966, the Camaro is in its sixth-generation model since 2016 MY. Design-wise, the car has come a long way and even though the older generation models still hold a special place in every car person’s heart, the new model retains the original muscular appeal and adds the modern, aggressive appeal on top of that.

Since the Camaro is offered in 8 different trims it can get a bit unnerving while choosing the right one. We would recommend going for the 1LT since it gets the option to add the optional V6 which would ensure a more engaging driving experience than the base trim. The 3LT is best suited for those who desire a handsome list of features over performance. For the enthusiasts, we would suggest the 2SS trim since it offers a raw performance from its naturally aspirated V8.

2022 Chevrolet Camaro Review

Pros

  • Impressive agility and handling for a muscular coupe
  • Peppy performance right from the base trim
  • Smooth ride quality for the segment
  • Excellent list of standard features
  • Convenient-to-use infotainment system

Cons

  • Compromised outward visibility owing to the roofline and small windows
  • Cramped trunk space
  • Almost impractical rear seats

Muscle cars and smaller Pony cars were America’s one of the best gifts to the automotive industry and enthusiasts across the globe. Among the iconic brands responsible for that are Chevrolet, Dodge, and Ford.

Overview

Pricing and Features
7.5/10

The 2022 Chevrolet Camaro will be a carryover model with some minor changes to the available color options and the availability of copper-free brakes from Brembo for the top-end models. The coupe is available in a total of 8 trim levels along with three engine choices and two transmission options. The base trims get the inline-4 motor while the 3.6-liter V6 is optional from the second trim onwards. The 6.2-liter V8 is standard on the LT1 trim while the top-end ZL1 gets the top dog supercharged version of the same V8 motor. Starting from the base trim some handsome standard features include a keyless entry and ignition system, power-adjustable driver’s seat, a 7-inch touchscreen display along with Android Auto, and wireless Apple CarPlay. The 1LT trim opens up the option for adding the optional V6 motor along with equipping the car with other optional extras as well. The 3LT trim is a value for money upgrade over the base trim with a solid and extensive list of features which include fully customizable ambient interior lighting, head-up display, forward collision warning, heated steering wheel, and wireless charging pad among others. The LT1 is quite similar to the 1LT but gets the mammoth 6.2-liter V8 as standard along with an upgraded cooling system of the motor, bigger 20-inch wheels, and Brembo brakes for the front wheels among others. The top-dog ZL1 is the ultimate among the entire lineup and gets the supercharged iteration of the naturally aspirated 6.2-liter V8 found on the 1LT along with better performance tires, adaptive dampers, upgraded brakes, adjustable performance exhaust system, Recaro front sport seats, and a faux suede-wrapped steering wheel.

We recommend

Since the Camaro is offered in 8 different trims it can get a bit unnerving while choosing the right one. We would recommend going for the 1LT since it gets the option to add the optional V6 which would ensure a more engaging driving experience than the base trim. The 3LT is best suited for those who desire a handsome list of features over performance. For the enthusiasts, we would suggest the 2SS trim since it offers a raw performance from its naturally aspirated V8.

Engine and Performance
9.0/10

The 2022 Chevrolet Camaro engine is a 2.0-liter turbocharged I-4 motor and it’s the base powertrain on offer in the Camaro lineup. There is also an optional 3.6-liter V6 that offers 335 horsepower but a similar torque to the base motor. The SS models get a standard naturally aspirated 6.2-liter LS V8 engine that offers a healthy 455 horsepower and 455 lb-ft of torque. The ZL1 gets the supercharged version of the same motor and produces a massive 650 horsepower and 650 lb-ft of torque. Coming to the base motor, it is good for a decent 275 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque. Within the city limits, the motor feels adequate if driven in a relaxed manner while out on the highways the motor would allow for decent and stress-free triple-digit cruising speeds as well. The motor is mated to a standard 6-speed manual transmission that also gets a rev-matching feature for smoother gearshifts especially within the city limits. The 0-60mph time of the car is rated at 5.5 seconds that is quite decent for a four-cylinder engine-powered pony car.

The 2022 Dodge Challenger might carry a slightly higher base price yet it also offers a bigger and more powerful 3.6-liter naturally aspirated V6 motor. It produces about 303 horsepower however, its 268 lb-ft of torque output is the lowest among the rivals here. The driving dynamics of the Challenger are also not as good as the Camaro or the Mustang, making it a tail-happy muscle car. The Ford Mustang is the real star of the segment by whipping out a jaw-dropping 310 horsepower and 350 lb-ft of torque from a compact turbocharged I-4 motor. Apart from showcasing the next-level EcoBoost tech, the engine also offers excellent driveability by offering excellent fuel economy numbers too both within the coyote and out on the highways.

Fuel Economy
7.0/10

Muscle cars and pony cars were known to be some tail-happy and heavy vehicles on the roads with terrible mpg figures. However, the scenario has changed to a large extent with the advancement of engine techs. The 2022 Chevrolet Camaro with its base turbocharged motor delivers about 19mpg of city mileage, 29mpg of highway mileage, and 22mpg of combined mileage as per the EPA. It also houses a massive 19-gallon gas tank and offers some exceptionally long driving range numbers, making it the perfect highway cruiser.

The Dodge Challenger with its 3.6-liter V6 impresses the most. It is as fuel-efficient as the smaller engine-powered Camaro here and delivers an identical 19mpg of city mileage, slightly better 30mpg of highway mileage, and an equally better 23mpg of combined mileage as well. It gets a slightly smaller 18.5-gallon gas tank yet manages to stay at par with the Camaro in terms of driving range numbers. The Ford Mustang is the best one here to drive within the cities owing to its impressive power and equally inspiring mpg figures as well.

Interior
6.5/10

The 2022 Chevrolet Camaro interior is quite well-equipped starting from the base trim itself. Even though there are some exposed plastic bits that might bog down the experience to a small extent, the robust build and the above-average quality of materials ensure that everything will remain in place even after extensive usage. The front seats are comfortable and supportive while in the base trim only the driver’s seat gets electronic adjustments. Stepping up to the 1LT gets electronic adjustments for both seats. There are some chrome inserts and silver accents inside the cabin while the dashboard design is best described as simple at the most.

The steering wheel gets a flat-bottom design along with controls mounted on it for convenience. The higher trims offer a faux suede wrapping for the steering wheel along with a heating function as well. The rear seats are extremely impractical with puny headroom, making them only useful for keeping some luggage items. The trunk space is also below average at a mere 9.1 cu-ft only. The standard infotainment system comes with a 7-inch touchscreen display and offers a majority of the practical features such as 4G LTE WiFi, Android Auto, wireless Apple CarPlay, and Bluetooth among others.

The Dodge Challenger has a decent cabin with several design bits and features combined with a few retro bits such as the analog speedo and tachometers. It also offers decent comfort levels along with a generous list of standard features as well. Most importantly, the Challenger offers more cabin space than the Camaro including fully usable rear seats too. As a cherry on the top, it provides the biggest trunk capacity here at 16.2 cu-ft. The Ford Mustang gets the most retro-modern cabin among the rivals here with the steering wheel carrying the iconic Mustang logo. Feature-wise, it is as handsomely equipped as both the Challenger and the Camaro while it’s also at a similar level to the rivals in terms of comfort and sportiness as well. It also houses fairly usable rear seats with a split-folding mechanism for added practicality.

Exterior
8.0/10

The Camaro received a facelift along with a generation change not so long ago and the new design is even more enticing and sporty than ever before. The 2022 Chevrolet Camaro doesn’t get any visual changes and the existing design looks modern enough. The front fascia of the car looks mean and angry with the sleek grille, while the headlamp units, combined with the extended LED DRLs, make for a dramatic show every time. The lower part of the front bumper gets blacked-out treatment and houses the air intake for the cooling systems. The side profile of the car remains simple with smooth and curvy edges while the windows are sampler than average, making exterior visibility quite tricky within city limits. The rear end gets a quad taillight design along with chrome exhaust tips.

The Dodge Challenger looks as muscular as ever with its strong character lines, a functional hood scoop(on higher models), and iconic round headlamp units. The rear end of the vehicle will remind you of the old models with a similar design theme but with modern LED taillight units. Moreover, the Challenger has a higher ground clearance than the Camaro as well. The Ford Mustang, with its new design, has started losing its old-school charm and has become more of a modern pony car. The LED headlamp units along with the black grille give the car a distinct aggressive appeal while the Camaro carries the best road presence in terms of design among the rivals here.

Some exterior features are:

  • 18-inch wheels
  • LED headlamps
  • Chrome exhaust tips
  • Rear lip spoiler
  • Black exhaust tips(optional)

Safety
8.8/10

Chevrolet has never joked around when it came to the safety of its vehicles and the same trait has followed into the Camaro as well. The 2022 Camaro is yet to go through the crash tests but the 2021 Camaro performed decently in the tests carried out by both the NHTSA and the IIHS. The federal agency gave the car a perfect 5-star rating while the IIHS gave a “Good” rating on most of the test parameters. Apart from that, the car comes with a host of standard features while the advanced driver assistance features start coming from the 3LT trim level. The driver assistance features include a Forward collision warning system, Rear parking sensors, a Head-up display, and a Blind-spot monitor with a rear cross-traffic alert.

Some standout safety features include:

  • Lane Keeping Assist
  • Blind-spot Monitor
  • Rear Cross-Traffic Alert
  • Front Collision Warning
  • Tire Pressure Monitoring System
  • OnStar and Chevrolet Emergency Connect

Competition
8.0/10

Chevrolet Camaro vs Dodge Challenger

The Dodge Challenger is a strong rival of the Camaro and it manages to surpass the latter in almost every aspect. On the inside, the Challenger has better space along with usable rear seats and a generous cargo capacity. It also offers a more comfortable ride than the Camaro however, in terms of agility and handling, it stays miles behind the Chevy. Performance-wise, it beats the Camaro with its bigger V6 motor.

Chevrolet Camaro vs Ford Mustang

The Ford Mustang is the only one in the segment to come with a turbo four-pot motor that whips out a never-seen-before 310 horsepower along with 350 lb-ft of torque. On the handling aspect too, the Mustang is competent to the Camaro as well. Coming to the inside, the Mustang also suffers from a cramped rear seat but it offers a better cargo capacity than the Camaro. Moreover, it delivers more fuel economy than the Camaro, making it the most ideal city car as well as a dependable highway cruiser too.

Final Verdict

The Chevrolet Camaro has been the favorite for a lot of petrolheads for a long time now and with its impressive lineup of powertrains coupled with the handsome list of standard features, it emerges as an unstoppable option on the segment. The strongest bits of the car is its feature-packed cabin and its agile handling. It lacks big time in practicality with puny cargo space and an equally disappointing rear seat. Overall, if you’re looking for a modern pony car with adequate agility and an enjoyable driving experience, the Camaro is the one to go for.
