Back in 2019, Ferrari brought in its replacement to the 488 lineup in the form of the F8 Tributo.

Back in 2019, Ferrari brought in its replacement to the 488 lineup in the form of the F8 Tributo. The F8 Tributo wasn’t entirely redone but rather was an evolution of the Ferrari 488. The F8 Tributo got a huge upgrade in power and now makes use of Ferrari’s most powerful engine, ever. As a natural successor to the 488 and a new moniker in the lineup, the F8 Tributo stands against adversaries like the Mclaren 720S, Aston Martin DBS Superleggera, and the Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series in its segment.

Pricing and Features
8.5/10

The 2022 Ferrari F8 Tributo is offered in just one trim level and is priced at $280,000. It gets just one engine and drivetrain option. Being a purists car, the F8 does not get an extensive list of features, but it is focused on performance. Either way, we’ve listed the features offered with the car as standard in the table below. While these are the highlighting features available with the sports car, there are other optional features and packages you can opt for an immersive experience.

There is not much of a decision when it comes to buying the Ferrari F8 Tributo. It is available as a single trim unit and given its powerful performance and engaging dynamics, we’d recommend the prancing horse over its competitors as well.

Engine and Performance
8.5/10

Powering the 2022 Ferrari F8 Tributo is a massive 3.9 liter twin-turbo V8 engine that sits in the middle of the car, right behind the passengers. The engine churns out a bonkers 711 horses and 567 lb-ft of torque which is a huge upgrade compared to its predecessor, the 488 which only made about 640 horses. The engine is mated to a Formula 1 derived 7-speed automatic gearbox and all the 711 horses spin the rear wheels only.

The F8 Tributo is crazy fast on the straight line and the RWD configuration helps boost initial acceleration. This thing smokes the drag strip and cuts the quarter-mile distance in just 10.8 seconds and hits 60 mph in just 2.9 seconds. Its top speed has been electronically limited to 211 mph but otherwise, it can go even faster.

The engine is a gem of a unit. It is extremely responsive to inputs and never hesitates to build up pace and go faster. The slick-shifting gearbox is one of the best you’ll find on a road car. The shifts are lightning quick, faster than a blink of the eye. The F8 Tributo is also offered with a pedal shifter and so in case you want more aggressive shifts, you can take matters into your own hands. The F8 Tributo borrows its dynamics from the 488 lineup and drives smoothly both in the city limits and on the track.

Of all the cars that are priced around the F8 Tributo, the McLaren 720s is the quickest of them all. The McLaren delivers the same power and torque as the Ferrari, but credit to its lightweight and perhaps better aerodynamics, the British supercar is quicker by 0.1 seconds to 60 mph and by about half a second on the quarter-mile run than the Italian supercar. Even the Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series coupe is potent and impresses with its abilities. It churns out 720 hp, which is the highest in the segment, and holds fort against all its rivals. The Aston Martin, on the other hand, is the slowest of the lot in terms of straight-line acceleration, largely because of its normally aspirated powertrain and weight.

Fuel Economy
7.0/10

Supercars are not for the people looking for fuel economy and if you still need a car that chugs less fuel, then you may perhaps get some hybrid supercar. The F8 Tributo is a proper gas guzzler and frankly for the performance that it has to deliver, we’d not mind pumping in more fuel into it. TIt chugs a gallon of gas for every 15 miles it travels in the city, while on the highway it can go for about 19 miles on a single gallon. It has an EPA rating of 16 MPG combined. While it stays at the bottom of the barrel when efficiency is concerned, the Ferrari F8 Tributo manages to cover the highest range in the segment, credits to its voluminous fuel tank that can hold 22.7-gallons.

It’s surprising to see that despite having the smallest engine in the competition, the F8 Tributo has the lowest fuel economy numbers. The McLaren 720s once again pips the Ferrari and delivers 18 MPG combined. The Aston Martin DBS and the Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series are also frugal options and manage to churn out better fuel economy numbers than the Ferrari. But each contemporary features a smaller fuel tank than the Ferrari, and Mclaren’s 19-gallon option is the least voluminous. Thus, they fail to match the range of the F8 Tributo and only the DBS Superleggera comes close managing a combined range of 349 miles.

Interior
8.0/10

Inside the 2022 Ferrari F8 Tributo, you do not feel like you’re sitting in a car but you almost feel like you’re in a cockpit. The design of the cabin has evolved from its predecessor, the 488, and it is all very driver-focused and revolves around the driver. You’ll also find extensive use of carbon fiber and other high-quality light-weight materials.

The first unique thing that you notice is the steering wheel and the way all the controls and buttons and switches are mounted on it. The steering column just has the gear shift paddles. The car doesn’t have stalks on the steering column but instead, there are buttons and knobs mounted on the wheel for everything right from the turn indicators and wipers to the ignition switch and drive mode selector. It at times looks confusing but otherwise, it looks like the wheel resembles that on a Formula One car. And yes, the steering wheel is made out of carbon fiber and has shift lights on top to show the rev range that you’re driving in.

The next interesting interior item is the placement of the gear mode selection. There’s a strange carbon fiber stalk that sticks out of the center console and on it there are buttons for reverse, drive, launch control, and hazard lamps. The circular air-con vents also look cool and resemble jet engines. There’s no infotainment screen in the center console because that’s integrated into the instrument cluster that sits in front of the driver and the passenger has no access to the infotainment whatsoever. In the center of the dash, you can only find the buttons and the knobs for climate control and that’s the only thing that the passenger has access to in the entire car. Interestingly, the passenger has an optional small 7-inch horizontally stacked touchscreen display on the dash that displays stuff like speed, engine rpm, current gear position, and the g-forces acting, and in our opinion, that’s a cool feature. While it’s all performance-focused, the infotainment system of the Ferrari is not its strongest suit and it lacks basic features. Yet, it gets Apple CarPlay functionality and has a 6-speaker audio system at its disposal.

You get those skinny bucket seats in the car that are meant to hold you tight in place and prevent you from getting thrown around. These skinny carbon-fiber seats are very low to the ground and you almost sit on the floor with your legs stretched out. Not the most comfortable seating position but if you need comfort, then you perhaps should be looking at something like a Bentley or a Maybach.

In terms of sheer passenger space and creature comfort, it’s the Aston Martin DBS Superleggera that’s better than all the others. The Aston Martin has a GT demeanor to it and that’s why its cabin is luxurious, crafted with plush leather and other high-quality materials. It also gets the best cargo space of 12.7 cubic feet and is closely followed by the Mercedes-AMG. However, it’s in the McLaren where you can find some ultra weight-saving measures like those very skinny bucket seats, and almost every other item in the cabin is built of carbon fiber and Alcantara. The Ferrari takes a rather balanced approach and if you want you can have it specced with leather and finer materials and as well as with lightweight sporty carbon fiber bits.

Key interior features:

  • 4-way manually adjustable bucket seats
  • Carbon fiber steering leather with leather trim
  • Dual-zone automatic climate control
  • Leather seat trim
  • 6-speaker sound system
  • Apple CarPlay

Exterior
8.5/10

The 2022 Ferrari F8 Tributo is gorgeous on the outside. Again, the design is more of an evolution than a revolution from its predecessor, the 488. The best way to tell apart the 488 and the F8 Tributo is at the front. Starting with the design of the headlights, the 488 had long vertically stacked headlights that extended up to the middle of the hood while the F8 Tributo’s headlights have a slung back shape which is very different and distinct from the 488. Plus, there’s an S-tunnel in the hood at the front which allows air at front of the car through the car’s hood, over the car and that just gives the car an extra bit of downforce and enhanced aerodynamics.

At the side, you get to see those large 20-inch silver painted alloy wheels and those look cool. And there are also large air vents behind the doors and those are real and allow air to pass to the engine compartment. At the back, there’s a large glass panel that allows you to gaze at the engine and that’s a fantastic perk of the F8 Tributo’s design. You can even pop the glass panel up and touch and feel the machine that makes over 700 horsepower.

At the back, there’s a large splitter along with 4 circular taillights which again differentiate the F8 Tributo from the 488. Then there’s a large wing and the sculpted bumper is accompanied by grilles at the back which is quite uncommon but given that this is a mid-engined car, those grilles are there for better airflow to the engine bay.

Well, all the cars in the competition look fantastic and have a charm of their own. You cannot declare the best looker here and it completely depends on your taste on what you call the best looking in the competition. What cars look the best is up to you to decide. Our only complaint with the Ferrari’s design is that it gets regular doors that open sideways and Ferrari hasn’t made an effort to make those gimmicky supercar doors that most other supercars have like the ones on the Mclaren

Key exterior features:

  • Silver painted 20-inch alloy wheels
  • LED brake lights
  • Wing spoiler
  • Auto on/off projector-beam headlights with LED daytime running lights
  • Exhaust tips

Safety
8.0/10

The F8 Tributo hasn’t yet been tested and rated by the NHTSA and IIHS and there’s nothing to talk about ratings. However, Ferrari knows for a fact that the rich and the important will be driving around in their cars and so they won’t build a car that’s low on safety. It doesn’t get all that many safety and driver assistance features but it will certainly keep you protected while you’re driving in it. The resilient body of the F8 Tributo promises structural integrity and you would not have to worry about the supercar being reliable.

Key safety features:

  • F-1 Trac ABS and traction control
  • Side impact beams
  • Rear parking sensors
  • Backup camera
  • Dual-stage airbags
  • Side impact beams

2022 Ferrari F8 Tributo vs. 2021 McLaren 720s Coupe

The Ferrari F8 Tributo costs about $20,000 less than the McLaren but then the performance numbers of the McLaren are slightly better than the Ferrari. The British supercar pips the Italian in terms of power, straight-line acceleration, and even fuel economy. However, the differences in performance are diminutive and even with the Ferrari, you would enjoy it to the fullest. So, if you ask us we’d put our money on the McLaren 720S because for one it is quicker on paper and for two it has more supercar elements like the dihedral doors that go up instead of the ones on the Ferrari that go sideways.

2022 Ferrari F8 Tributo vs. 2021 Aston Martin DBS Superleggera

The Aston Martin DBS Superleggera is a supercar with the flair of a grand tourer and the luxury of a sedan. It isn’t a crazy fast car with mad performance numbers rather it contains its power with aplomb and can also double up as a practical daily driver. So, if you’re looking for a car that has supercar performance but doesn’t compromise on luxury and equipment, then Aston Martin is the one you should go for. Otherwise, if you want a sporty performance machine, then the Ferrari can prove to be a better buy.

2022 Ferrari F8 Tributo vs. 2021 Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series

The Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series is the most extreme version of the Mercedes-AMG GT and Mercedes has literally pushed all the limits to build this one. The GT Black Series might not be the fastest one around, it resonates with performance both on the inside and on the outside. It is an ultimate track machine and Mercedes has specced this up with everything best they had. However, it is pricey and it pretty much resembles other cars in the AMG GT line up and it kind of lacks the exclusivity that the Ferrari offers. So, our pick in this comparison would be the Ferrari F8 Tributo.

Final Verdict

The Ferrari F8 Tributo might not be the fanciest Ferrari on offer but it carries the qualities to be charming and can be an ideal choice for the traditional buyer in the segment. The F8 Tributo could perhaps be the last true V8 combustion engine-powered Ferrari and the next in line could be a hybrid or even an electric. So, for all you purists and Ferrari fans out there, this might be your only chance. Moreover, it drives brilliantly, has a tantalizing design, is well-crafted on the inside, and all-in-all is an exciting machine to drive. The 2022 Ferrari F8 Tributo is totally worth money and never will disappoint you.
