About 2022 Ford Bronco

3.9

Overall Rating

The 2022 Ford Bronco is out in the market now and it starts at an MSRP of $29,300 and carries over unchanged over its 2021 model. Available in two body styles, six trims and two engine options, the 2022 Ford Bronco is a true rugged yet versatile SUV that is one of the most sought-after cars in the world right now.

The 2022 Ford Bronco starts at a base price of $29,300 including destination and is available in 2 body styles and 2 powertrain options. As standard, every 2022 Bronco comes with a 275 hp turbocharged 2.3-liter EcoBoost unit with a 7-speed transmission and 4WD. There are no major changes for the 2022 model, but Ford has teased the new high-performance Raptor version of the 2022 Bronco.

There's barely any ambiguity around the stature of the Ford Bronco and its off-road DNA. However, for those looking for a blend of capability, practicality with some disciplined dynamics, there is also a Bronco Sport that comes with a smaller engine and is cheaper as well. Despite its unique proposition, iconic heritage, and twin variants, the Ford Bronco does face heated competition from the likes of the Jeep Wrangler and the Toyota 4Runner.

For the 2022 Ford Bronco, there are no changes in the trim level and the Big Bend trim wins our pick. At $33,785, it gets some modest interior enhancements that aren't included in the standard model, besides the multi-mode terrain management system. It's also eligible for the optional Mid and Sasquatch packages, which add to the allure.

Pricing and Features
7.0/10

The 2022 Ford Bronco comes in a total of six trim levels, with pricing ranging from $29,300 for the BASE trim to over $49,475 for the top-of-the-line WILDTRAK trim. Buying Advice

Engine and Performance
7.5/10

"The new Bronco looks to be not only the most capable and high-tech Bronco ever, but one that raises the bar for every off-road oriented SUV on the market." - Motor Trend

The base engine offered in the 2022 Ford Bronco is a turbocharged 2.3-liter inline-four that makes 300 hp and 325 lb-ft of torque. This engine comes paired with a 7-speed manual transmission (six gears plus a crawl ratio). There's also the twin-turbocharged 2.7-liter V6 derived from the Ford Edge that produces 330 hp and 415 lb-ft of torque. This engine however uses a 10-speed transmission that is optional on the 2.3-liter unit.

With a 94.75:1 crawler ratio, the Ford Bronco is an immensely off-road machine. The standard drivetrain layout is four-wheel-drive but you also get the option of all-wheel drive. The seven-speed gearbox is nothing too fancy, but it's not bad at all. The short shifts actually help with better off-road control and quick access to power in tight situations. On the other hand, the 10-speed transmission shifts quickly with precision and comes with 7 drive modes called G.O.A.T.

In terms of handling and steering, despite the more off-roader characteristics and traits, the Bronco is decent on the streets. The handling is well-controlled, and the chassis and suspension work well to provide a comfortable ride quality. The steering however inspires confidence and there's immense feedback from the car. Just don't expect a lot around turns and corners. Highway runs are fine though with quick fires from the engine which also allows the Bronco to clock from 0-60 MPH in just 6.9 seconds.

For a very reasonable price, the Bronco offers excellent performance. It is much more capable than its rivals but remains competitive in terms of pricing. The power figures are excellent in the top figures make it the undisputed King on the Road and off it. The 0-60 sprint is done in a mere 6.9 seconds and the quarter-mile run is done at just 15.4 seconds. Thanks to the Bronco's lighter body than the rivals here and a more responsive powertrain.

Fuel Economy
6.5/10

Fuel estimates on the 2022 Bronco will remain the same as seen on the 2021 model. The 2.3-liter turbo inline-4 engine with either of the gearboxes returns 20 MPG city, 22 MPG highway, and 21 MPG combined. With the V6 and the 10-speed transmission, fuel economy sees a drop of 2 MPG across all sections. With the available Sasquatch package, the 2.3-liter motor's economy hits 18 MPG and 17 MPG on the 2.7-liter pot across all sections. The Bronco's useful 21-gallon fuel tank though turns out to be a great help with a healthy 441 miles of combined driving range.

When you pitch the Bronco against its competitors, the Toyota 4Runner is much less fuel-efficient returning 4 MPG lesser than the Ford Bronco combined. The Jeep Wrangler is a tad bit more fuel-efficient with a combined fuel efficiency of 24 MPG. The loss in economy on the Bronco comes due to its better performance. The fuel capacity on the 4Runner is the most at 23 gallons, whereas the Bronco gets the smallest at 21 gallons.

Interior
8.0/10

"While far from a luxury vehicle, the Bronco is more comfortable on the road than an equivalent Jeep Wrangler."- Edmunds

The interiors of the Bronco are where you will notice the most change. Though it looks fairly modern, it still retains design cues from Broncos of yore. Most materials used are waterproof, to help with all types of off-road adventures that the Bronco will go on. Ford has exercised very thoughtful design in the interiors that would sit well with almost every age group, with things like a rack on top of its dashboard where you can mount cameras or smartphones that can record your adventures.

The seats on the Bronco provide excellent support and offer a ton of adjustments which allows for all types of drivers to fit in. There's excellent headroom and legroom in the front and the back, which helps with relaxed long drives in the saddle. The removable roof however does translate into considerable road noise at highway speeds. You can also have options of rubberized flooring and a wide range of upholstery materials that include user-functional marine-grade vinyl as well as leather.

The 4Runner offers a less legroom of 32.9 inches. Even though all the SUVs are incredibly practical and offer a good amount of interior space, the Bronco takes the cake in terms of cargo space.

You also get wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. There is also a subscription-based Wi-Fi hotspot. Navigation is also offered as an option. Other interior features include:

"The new Bronco has only been out for a year and is already winning awards." - KBB

The 2022 Ford Bronco's design is still pretty new, despite its profile being in line with its earlier models. What's more characteristic is the fact that the Bronco's boxy straight-line profile feels very much modern and classy. The Bronco exterior is more dictated towards function, as is seen with its far-mounted wheels and tall bumpers that help with better approach and departure angles. The front of the Bronco sports round LED headlamps sit on the stylized grille with the 'BRONCO' lettering stamped in the middle. The hood is flat and short but maintains a profile ratio from the side view.

Along the side, the corner-placed wheels with the all-season tires and 17-inch alloy wheels give the Bronco a rugged look. The Bronco's side doors are made of aluminum, which makes these removable doors a piece of cake to remove. The roof and the fender flares are also removable. The mirrors are mounted on the A-pillars so that they remain functional even when you remove the doors. The looks are a fine compromise between aggression and beauty. You can also get the SUV in both soft top and hardtop versions.

Safety
9.0/10

The NHTSA or the IIHS have not crash-tested the Ford Bronco. The Bronco uses a body-on-frame construction with aluminum and high-strength steel. This is complemented with an array of safety features that include some driver-assistance features as well, as standard. Higher trims enjoy better safety tech that includes active lane control, evasive steering assist, adaptive cruise control, and blindspot monitors. On the 2022 Bronco, the safety features include but are not restricted to:-

Safety Features:

  • Personal Safety System
  • Airbags
  • AdvanceTrac with RSC (Roll Stability Control) -
  • Lower Anchors and Tether Anchors for Children

2022 Ford Bronco vs 2022 Jeep Wrangler

Both the Bronco and the Wrangler have a similar tow rating of 3,500 lbs, are priced similarly, and also have a very similar interior layout. Both the cars come with powerful engine options, an array of trim levels, and tons of customization to suit as per needs. The 2022 Jeep Wrangler however has more to offer for the same money than the Bronco, has a better economy, and carries the rugged Jeep DNA throughout. The Bronco, on the other hand, has better performance numbers, a more premium and technology-rich interior, and has more safety features on offer as well. Due to these advantages, we pick the Bronco over the Wrangler.

2022 Ford Bronco vs 2022 Toyota 4Runner

The 2022 Toyota 4Runner does not have much going for it against the Bronco. It makes much less power, is slower than the Bronco, and is also less fuel-efficient. However, the 4Runner has a higher tow rating of 5,000 lbs, it looks good, has a very capable off-roading setup, and has decent power for daily commuting as well. The Bronco on the other hand is more modern, has better customizations, top safety ratings and features, and offers desirable driving dynamics. The 4Runner offers a similar appeal to the Bronco, but it is beaten in terms of interior and off-road technology.

Final Verdict

At $29,300, the 2022 Ford Bronco ticks off most boxes as a daily SUV to live with. The Bronco offers capable off-roading character combined with advanced off-road equipment but at the same time doubles up as an excellent daily driver thanks to its driving modes, suspension setup, comfortable interiors and easy handling. All this combined with Ford's safety net on the Bronco make this SUV the top car to pick among its competitors.
