About 2022 Ford Expedition

3.7

Overall Rating

The 2022 Ford Expedition gets a facelifted exterior, and a redesigned interior inspired by the Mustang Mach-E. Powered by a 375 hp 3.5L turbocharged V6, a hybrid model based on the F-150 Hybrid has also been spotted testing. Furthermore, Ford is bringing the off-road-centric 2022 Expedition Timberline and a sportier Stealth Edition this year. All set for release in Late 2021 with a starting price of $52,775, there have been a lot of spy shots of all the models, including the Expedition Max.

The 2022 Ford Expedition gets a mid-cycle refresh with a redesigned exterior and interior, along with changes to the offered features and options. The 2022 Expedition lineup is available for sale and the price starts from $52,775 and goes up to $81,510 for the top Platinum 4WD trim. The Expedition still retains the 380 hp 3.5L turbocharged EcoBoost V6 with a ten-speed automatic gearbox and a choice between RWD and 4WD. In terms of trims, a new Timberline model also makes its way into the lineup and so does Ford's BlueCruise hands-free driving package as well.

The Ford Expedition is the largest car among the Ford family that works excellent as a very versatile family and luggage hauler, while there is also the Expedition Max on sale if you need even more space. There are no changes to the SUV's dimensions, and it still offers the immense 9,300 lbs towing capacity. Ford has also introduced a Stealth Edition performance package that can be had with the Limited trim and gets more power, sport-tuned suspension setup, and sportier appearance package.

Combined with its composed drive quality and spacious seating, the Ford Expedition goes up against the GMC Yukon, the Chevrolet Tahoe, Nissan Armada, and the Toyota Sequoia.

The 2022 Ford Expedition Limited 4WD is the one we recommend as it offers the most value for money for most buyers.

Priced at $69,040, it's right in the middle of the trim lineup and builds on the XLT trim features with heated second-row seats, available captain chairs, 12-speaker Bang & Olufsen speakers, Ford Co-Pilot 360 Assist, and other creature comforts. The new Stealth Performance package is also suggested for those who want more power with the 440 hp engine, and a sportier appeal for their Expedition.

2022 Ford Expedition Review

Pros

  • Refined ride and decent performance
  • Enticing design
  • Noteworthy towing capabilities
  • Spacious cabin and luggage space

Cons

  • Isn't as agile as some other full-size SUVs
  • Top trims are expensive as the more premium Lincoln Navigator

Pricing and Features
7.0/10

"Perhaps the most significant upgrades to the Expedition are its technology offerings." -Edmunds

The 2022 Ford Expedition is now available in six trim levels, adding the Timberline trim to the lineup. Pricing for the trims ranges from $52,775 to $81,510, which includes a destination charge of $1,695. Standard features across all trims include LED lights, foglights, tri-zone climate control, power-adjustable driver's seat, Ford's Sync4 infotainment system, a new 12-inch central infotainment unit, and a WiFi system.

The top Platinum trim now gets BlueCruise highway driving technology as standard, which is optional on the other higher trims. The all-new TImberline trim adds off-road mechanicals such as an off-road suspension, 22-inch wheels with all-terrain tires, skidplate protection, electronic limited-slip rear differential, and a high-output 440hp 3.5L twin-turbocharged V6 engine with 4WD.

Engine and Performance
7.5/10

"Big Power for a big body, the Expedition is impressive." - The Car Connection

The 2022 Ford Expedition gets the same 3.5L turbocharged V6 engine that churns out 380 hp and 470 lb-ft of torque. This unit comes mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission that puts the power to the rear wheels with a 2-range transfer case. Also, 4WD is optional for a premium of $3,000. For 2022, Ford adds a high-output version of the same 3.5L EcoBoost engine that is rated at 440 hp and 510 lb-ft of torque.

This engine is standard on the Timberline and Platinum trim along with Stealth package models. The standard engine-gearbox combination works wonders with a 4WD setup. Power delivery is linear and punchy at the same time, and gear shifts are accurate with no lag. The Expedition can up to 6,000 lbs, which increases to 9,300 lbs with the Heavy-Duty Trailer Tow Package.

The steering on the Expedition is light, making it easy to maneuver this over 5,400 lbs SUV in the city. The car uses an independent rear suspension that helps with better ride quality and more control over high speeds. The 2022 Expedition sprints from 0-60 MPH in 5.9 seconds, with a top speed of 115 MPH.

The Ford Expedition is the most powerful option and with the Toyota Sequoia coming in close. The GMC Yukon and Chevy Tahoe share their powertrains, however, the Tahoe is cheaper by a couple of thousand bucks and yet both offer similar performance. In terms of towing capacity, the Expedition has the most followed by the Chevy Tahoe, while the Sequoia is the least impressive in this regard.

Fuel Economy
6.0/10

The 2022 Ford Expedition is not the most fuel-efficient SUV in the family haulers segment. But the 2022 model returned 17 MPG in the city, 23 MPG on the highway, and 19 MPG combined with the 380 hp engine and RWD. With the 440 3.5L engine, the Expedition returns 16 MPG city and 22 MPG highway in RWD guise as per the EPA.

Opting for the 4WD drivetrain sees a drop in the MPG ratings marginally. The Expedition gets a tank capacity of 23.3 gallons, which results in a range of over 500 miles on the highways. Fuel costs for the Expedition over a period of 5-years come around $2,400 with an annual mileage of 15,000 miles.

The Expedition is the most fuel-efficient car among the rivals. The GMC twins are next in line and return 18 MPG combined, while the Toyota has the highest fuel consumption here. In terms of range, the Sequoia employs the largest gas tank and yet offers the least impressive range.

Interior
8.0/10

"The Expedition's interior is as vast as you'd expect of a vehicle this large." - Edmunds

The 2022 Ford Expedition also features changes to its interior, the most significant change being to the dashboard that is similar to the one seen on the redesigned Ford F-150 truck. Also, materials used in the interior have improved, with more premium and high-quality materials making way for soft-touch plastic surfaces and trims. The interior quality keeps on increasing as one climbs up the trim level, getting the Platinum trim close to some luxury offerings in the $80,000 price bracket.

The Expedition seats up to 8 passengers. Seating comfort in the front is superb, with very plush cushioning and excellent lumbar support. In the second row, the seats are soft but slightly on the firmer side. A bench seat is standard, whereas captain chairs come as optional. The third row has enough space to seat two adults comfortably. Getting in the Expedition is not the easiest, thanks to its tall ground clearance and heavy doors. That said, large windows and a flat windshield help with excellent visibility all-around.

Access to the third row is easier than on the rivals. Front seats come with massage and ventilation. Higher trims get power-folding captain chairs and power-folding third-row seats. The 20.9 cu-ft of trunk space can be extended to 63.6 cu-ft with the third row folded and maximum cargo space of 104.6 cu-ft by folding down the rear seats.

Against the rivals, the Expedition is not better, but its excellent space management makes it feel roomier than them. In the front, the Yukon and Tahoe offer the most headroom and the most legroom. At the rear, the Expedition has better headroom while the GM twins offer marginally better knee room. The third row is the roomiest in the 2022 Expedition but the GMC and Chevy SUVs offer more trunk space. The Sequoia feels the least impressive in all aspects in this interior comparison.

With a new 12-inch standard and a portrait-oriented 15.5-inch optional infotainment screens on offer, the Expedition looks the most modern in the segment.

Staying true to the leaks, all trims now come standard with a massive 12-inch centrally mounted touchscreen infotainment unit, with Ford's Sync 4 and Ford Co-Pilot 360. Ford's infotainment software has improved with every upgrade, and the Sync 4A software is even more intuitive on the optional system. The layout is simple, with an easy menu that makes accessing features a piece of cake. Touch input responses are quick, and the navigation is smooth and responsive. The car comes standard with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Some of the interior features are:

  • Power heated/ventilated and massaging front seats w/premium leather upholstery
  • Heated rear seats and heated leather steering wheel w/power-folding third-row seats
  • Three-zone automatic climate control
  • 12-inch SYNC 4 touchscreen infotainment system and optional 15.5-inch SYNC 4A portrait-oriented infotainment screen
  • 12-speaker Bang & Olufsen audio system and optional rear-seat entertainment system
  • Satellite radio, 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot, and Navigation system

"Very little had changed with the look of the Ford Expedition for 2022." - KBB

The 2022 Ford Expedition gets small changes to its exterior. At the front, the car sports a new set of LED headlights, fancied with a few different straight lines on the bumper area. Apart from that, it remains the same. The wide grille, with chrome and platinum accents, suit the bulky look that the front imparts. Along the side, the Expedition's profile has been tweaked with a slightly different silhouette and for 2022, the car gets new wheel designs as well.

The thick and wide doors are in proportion with the large windows, and a thick shoulder line runs from the front fender to the rear taillights. At the rear, the car gets a redesigned rear end with a rectangular taillight design that looks simple and does not seem out of place on this otherwise large SUV. The highlight of the 2022 Expedition is the Timberline trim. Specific to this trim, the car is raised higher off the ground, and there are also changes to the overall exterior styling.

Roof rails, a different front and rear fender for better approach and departure angles, skidplate, and 33-inch all-terrain tires with a unique 18-inch alloy wheel design set the Timberline apart from the other trims. The new Stealth Edition Package adds a gloss-black grille with a black Ford logo, gloss-black roof rails and mirrors, black 22-inch alloy wheels with red brake calipers, and a black-ou sport exhaust system. Dimensionally, the car sees no changes with its 5,443 lbs curb weight and 9.8-inch standard ground clearance.

Since the dimensions are retained, the 2022 Expedition sits highest above the ground and has the longest wheelbase as well. The Yukon is the lightest in this lot while the Toyota Sequoia is the heaviest. Dimensionally, the Yukon and the Chevrolet Tahoe have nearly similar profiles, however, the Tahoe is the longer of the two just by a minute margin.

On the streets, it is the Expedition and Yukon that will get the most attention and offers a dominant road presence. Some of the exterior features on the Expedition are:

  • Automatic LED headlights, LED foglights and LED brake lights
  • Handsfree liftgate and Power-deployable running boards
  • Panoramic sunroof and roof-rack rails
  • Chrome grille
  • Lip spoiler
  • 22-inch 12-spoke polished aluminum alloy wheels

Safety
8.0/10

Serving as the flagship SUV for the automaker, the 2022 Ford Expedition is built with the best and sturdiest materials. Though the 2022 MY is a minor refresh, the underlying platform is still the same and hence similar ratings as last year are expected. The 2021 Ford Expedition procured a perfect 5-star safety rating from the NHTSA. The IIHS is yet to test it, and we expect the ride to perform equally admirably.

Demanding north of 50 grand, the 2022 Ford Expedition comes with the full force of the Co-Pilot360 safety suite. In a lot of cases, the sheer number of features in the Co-Pilot360 suite becomes the deciding factor in the buying decision. Ford now offers its cutting-edge Blue-Cruise hands-free highway driving technology as standard on the top-end Platinum trim.

Some of the notable safety features of the 2022 Ford Expedition are:

  • Front and rear collision mitigation system
  • Ford Co-Pilot360 w/Intersection Assist
  • Blind-spot monitor and driver monitor alert
  • Lane departure warning and lane-keeping assist
  • Assisted Parking and MyKey system
  • Front & rear parking sensors
  • 360-degree view camera w/aerial view

2022 Ford Expedition vs 2022 GMC Yukon

The naturally aspirated engine under the hood of the Yukon isn't as capable or quick as the turbocharged unit powering the Expedition. It also isn't that frugal as well and the Yukon is pricier as well. While Ford is the better handling SUV, the Yukon is a bit more comfortable. The 2022 Expedition also offers more legroom back in the third row but the Yukon offers a larger trunk capacity. Both are equally dominating to look at on the streets and have also have abundant tech to offer, ending this comparison in a tie.

2022 Ford Expedition vs 2022 Chevrolet Tahoe

The 2022 Chevrolet Tahoe and the Expedition are quite on par when it comes to what the cars offer as a complete package, and the differences only depend on what you need. The Tahoe offers a stronger engine lineup with a diesel engine, has more standard and optional features, comes with the famous magnetic ride control suspension, and is also very off-road capable with its Z71 model. The Expedition on the other hand has a more modern and updated design, has a higher tow rating, comes with a more functional and spacious interior, and offers smooth and refined engines. The all-new Timberline model also promises excellent off-roading capacity. As a result, despite its higher price, the Expedition is the better of the two.

2022 Ford Expedition vs 2022 Toyota Sequoia

The 2022 Sequoia is not only more affordable, but it is only marginally slower than the Expedition. That said, the Toyota is a big-time gas guzzler while Ford is more caring about mother nature. The interior of the 2022 Expedition is where things change though. It is more spacious and far more upmarket. There are more technology and safety features on offer in the Ford as well. Therefore, it makes the Expedition worth the additional investment and should be the preferred choice between the two.

Final Verdict

All set to release for sale in early 2022, the 2022 Ford Expedition marks a significant refresh in the lifecycle of the moniker. With a redesigned exterior, a new off-road-centric Timberline model, and the eco-friendly 2022 Expedition Hybrid, things are certainly set to get quite exciting for the moniker. Priced from $52,775 onwards, the 2022 Ford Expedition is definitely worth looking out for with everything it is set to offer. Retaining its feature-rich cues from before, the interior also gets a major remodel which allows it to become more relevant for the modern-day SUV.
