Overall Rating
The 2022 Ford Maverick hybrid pickup truck marks the return of the Maverick nameplate with a 2.5L 191 hp hybrid powertrain and SuperCrew body style as standard. Specs differ with AWD which is only available along with a more powerful 2L turbo-4 engine. Standard towing capacity is rated for 2,000 lbs and fuel economy for 27 MPG combined. Keeping in time with the release date, it is available for sale at an MSRP of $21,490 for the base trim.
Ford has reintroduced the Maverick nameplate this year with the 2022 Ford Maverick hybrid, but not as a compact car, but as a revolutionary new compact pickup truck based on the same platform and chassis upon which the Escape and Bronco Sport are built. The new 2022 Maverick comes powered by a hybrid 191 horsepower powertrain as standard with an option for a turbo-4 engine.
The Maverick hybrid is rated for a maximum of 30 MPG on the highways and also has a standard towing capacity of 2,000 lbs. The 2022 Ford Maverick Hybrid Supercrew price starts at $20,995 and competes against Chevrolet Colorado, Hyundai Santa Cruz, and Toyota Tacoma. For a detailed review of the 2022 Maverick, check out the video below by "TheStraightPipes" and find out if this compact truck is the one for you.
The 2022 Ford Maverick is available only with a SuperCrew body style in three configurations. While the FWD drivetrain is standard the AWD is available only with the turbocharged inline-4 engine. The interior is pretty spacious even in this smaller footprint and also offers plenty of storage and hauling options for better practicality.
The Hyundai Santa Cruz is the only direct non-hybrid competitor of the Maverick but with the price ranging between $21,490 and $30,660, it also competes against the Chevrolet Colorado and the Toyota Tacoma.
The XLT trim of the Ford Maverick Hybrid offers the best package. It comes adequately equipped with features and offers much more than the base trim. You could opt for the XLT Luxury Package to make the truck more luxurious, but the not would be better to spend a slight more and opt for the top-end trim.

"The 2022 Ford Maverick recasts the pickup as a small , high-efficiency Swiss Army knife." - The Car Connection
The 2022 Ford Maverick SuperCrew Hybrid is available in three trim options that are the base XL, mid-level XLE, and the top-of-the-line Lariat. All models are powered by the same hybrid powertrain and come mated to an eCVT transmission transferring the power to the front wheels as AWD is not available, even as an option. That said, the AWD drivetrain is available with the turbo-4 engine starting at a cost of $24,795.
There are multiple packages on offer with the Maverick which include the Ford Co-Pilot360 Package that is available with all three trims at a cost of $540 and adds BLISS with Cross-Traffic Alert and Lane-Keeping System (Lane-Keeping Ald, Lane-Keeping Alert, and Driver Alert System) to the truck. Ford also offers an XLT Luxury Package worth $2,345 with the mid-level XLT trim that offers a superior set of features including heating and more functionality for the front seats, a premium leather-wrapped heated steering wheel, and more.

The top-end Lariat trim is offered with two exclusive packages that are the Lariat Luxury Package and the First Edition Package. The Lariat Luxury Package makes the already premium top-end trim, much more luxurious by adding exclusive features including Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop & Go, B&0 Premium Audio system with 8-speakers, Lane Centering, SiriusXM and SYNC 3-Enhanced Voice Recognition Communications and Entertainment System along with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and many other features.
Equipping the First Edition Package ($1,495) requires Lariat Luxury Package and this package features 18-inch Black Painted wheels, a black painted roof, a power tilt/slide moonroof a soft-folding tonneau cover, and a unique First Edition hood and side graphics decals.
The XLT trim of the Ford Maverick Hybrid offers the best package. It comes adequately equipped with features and offers much more than the base trim. You could opt for the XLT Luxury Package to make the truck more luxurious, but the not would be better to spend a slight more and opt for the top-end trim.
"The lower price and nimble size makes the Maverick a solid choice if you want the versatility of a pickup but don't need all the capability of offered by a midsize truck." Edmunds
The 2022 Ford Maverick Hybrid is powered by a 2.5L Atkinson-cycle Inline 4 engine paired with a 94kW electric motor. The ICE engine puts out 162 hp and 155 lb-ft while the combined output from the powertrain is a total of 191 horsepower which is impressive at this price point. The Maverick Hybrid is only available in an FWD drivetrain configuration which is a limitation. The powertrain setup comes mated to an Electronically controlled Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) aimed at maximum efficiency.
The Maverick Hybrid is light and the adequately powerful truck feels punchy and has enough power on offer although not as peppy as the optional turbocharged gasoline powertrain. The Maverick Hybrid takes 7.8 seconds to achieve 0-60 MPH and crosses the quarter-mile mark in a bit over 16 seconds. However, the handling and driving dynamics of the Maverick are properly truck-like and even though it is a lighter truck, it doesn’t feel nimble or agile enough for a small pickup.

The Chevy Colorado is the most powerful truck here but the Colorado and Tacoma are larger and heavier than the other duo which makes them slower than them when equipped with their base engines. The Santa Cruz is also a new product from Hyundai but it's more capable in terms of hauling and towing. The Chevy Colorado is the most capable of the lot.
The 2022 Ford Maverick is the absolute best in terms of fuel efficiency and comes with astonishing fuel economy numbers. The hybrid pickup delivers an impressive fuel economy of 42mpg in the city, 33 on the highway, and a combined fuel economy of around 37 MPGe. That said, the EPA rates the 2022 Maverick for 23/3027 MPG in city/highway/combined situations, and even with a rather small 13.8-gallon fuel tank, it still manages to offer 400 miles of range on the highways.

The Maverick being a hybrid is the absolute best and no others are a match for the Ford. The Maverick despite being a superbly efficient machine comes with a lower range compared to the others thanks to its smaller tank. The 2022 Tacoma has the highest fuel consumption while Santa Cruz does better than Colorado in terms of fuel economy ratings. Colorado on the other hand offers the most impressive driving range here.
"The Maverick's helpful storage cubbies and stylish cabin with mixtures and geometric patterns is eye-catchy, but the seats are uncomfortable." - Motortrend
The 2022 Ford Maverick features a simple design language inside the cabin while the interior quality is not as polished as in some of the rivals. This does get better if you opt for the top-end trim or the expensive package options. The cabin is aery and has great visibility outwards while the seats are comfortable and supportive. There is enough space on the inside and this mini truck actually offers better legroom than some of the larger competitors.Â
The base trim of the Maverick features cloth seats while the top-end trim gets ActiveX seats and a leather-wrapped steering wheel. The second row has a rear bench seat with a flip-up rear-seat cushion and the option to equip under-seat storage. There is also enough space behind the Maverick and it would be able to carry enough load. Dual-zone climate control is only available in the top-end trim while the lower trims are limited with a single-zone climate control system.Â

None of these machines offer an ultra-spacious rear row, however, the Hyundai offers the most legroom at the back followed by the Maverick. While Tacoma and Colorado despite being much larger than the others offer lesser space. These larger trucks, however, offer more space to carry cargo with larger beds that can haul a lot more cargo.
The 2022 Maverick comes equipped with an 8-inch infotainment unit with its easy-to-use user interface is a gem to have.Â
The base models feature a 4.2-Inch Instrument cluster while the higher-end trims come equipped with a larger 6.5-inch unit. As for audio, the lower-end trims are equipped with a 6-speaker audio system as standard while the top-end trims could be equipped with a premium, 8-speaker audio system from Bang and Olufsen. The following are the main infotainment features in the 2022 Ford Maverick.Â
"The 2022 Ford Maverick is unlike any new truck we have seen since Subaru discontinued the Baja." - Carbuzz
The 2022 Ford Maverick doesn’t actually look as updated or futuristic as its powertrain. The Maverick is a modern-looking truck but it doesn’t look as modern as it should be which would be a good thing for the crowd looking for a traditional truck but might disappoint people looking for a modern little truck. The Maverick, however, is a good-looking machine with sleek and curvy aesthetics. The front-end features a large grille with LED headlights integrated into it on both sides providing an overall modern and muscular look.
The wheels are 17-Inch steel wheels In Sparkle Silver in the base trim while the XLT gets 17-Inch painted aluminum wheels and the top-end trim features 18-Inch bright aluminum wheels. You could further customize the looks of the Maverick by option for the First Edition Package in the top-end trim on top of the Lariat Luxury Package and add 18-inch Black Painted wheels, a black painted roof, a power tilt/slide moonroof a soft-folding tonneau cover, and a unique First Edition hood and side graphics decals.

The 2022 Hyundai Santa Cruz takes the cake in terms of exterior beauty as it is the most beautiful and updated-looking machine here with a distinct design language. The overall aesthetics of the Santa Cruz is miles ahead of all the other competitors which look much like traditional pickup trucks. The Chevy and Toyota are the larger and heavier ones here while the Ford is the lightest. The Toyota Tacoma offers the most ground clearance and that makes it the most offroad capable unless you opt for the ZR2 trim of the Colorado which is much more expensive.
The 2022 Ford Maverick Hybrid comes equipped with the Ford Co-Pilot360 Technology as standard which is a set of safety features bundled into the truck as standard. The base trim comes with plenty of standard safety features and driver aids while the higher-end trims are offered with more safety and driver-assistance features. The 2022 Ford Maverick has not been crash-tested by any of the safety agencies while the following safety standard and optional features ensure a safe ride for the occupants-
The 2022 Hyundai Santa Cruz is a more futuristic and sleeker-looking truck compared to the Ford Maverick while in terms of straight-line performance and speed, the Ford has an edge over the Hyundai. The Santa Crux, however, is the more athletic one with better handling and driving dynamics. The Maverick with the hybrid powertrain offers superior fuel efficiency and range. Combined with the capable performance and impressive price tag, these characteristics make the Maverick the better choice if you’re looking for a fuel-efficient truck. If you’re ready to compromise fuel economy and are satisfied with the gasoline powertrain, the Santa Cruz would be the better option for you.
The 2022 Toyota Tacoma offers better towing and payload capabilities while being barebones on the inside as it is the base trim of the Tacoma we have taken against the Maverick. The top-end trim of the Maverick is faster, offers a much more spacious, superior quality cabin along with an amazing feature set. The Maverick also offers much-improved fuel economy numbers compared to the Tacoma. So unless you require 4WD and more hauling and carrying capacity, the Ford would be the better choice.
The 2022 Chevrolet Colorado offers a spacious and comfortable cabin and comes with a powertrain under the hood that is adequately powerful and also has 4WD on offer. However, the Maverick is still the better deal as it offers much more value for money and has a better set of features inside the cabin. Not to mention the impeccable fuel economy provided by the Maverick and the superior performance it offers. Overall it would be better to stick with the Maverick unless 4WD is a must-have for you.
The 2022 Ford Maverick Hybrid is a one-of-a-kind machine offering astonishing fuel economy numbers for a pick-up truck along with a capable and strong powertrain. The cabin is pretty well-built and the higher and optional packages offer a superior set of features and luxury. Overall, for the price it is offered, this Ford is the best option not only because of its hybrid powertrain and impressive fuel economy but also because it is the best-equipped truck compared to the non-hybrid competitors in the segment.
