2022 Ford Ranger Review

The 2022 Ford Ranger is a popular midsize truck because of its amazing performance, decent size, and practical off-roading capabilities. Priced at $25,000, the Ranger comes in three trim levels with a turbocharged 2.3L I-4 engine and RWD or AWD. The 2022 Ranger brings back the 90s nostalgia with the Splash package, that adds a hint of orange to the outside and the inside of the car.

With an estimated starting price of $25,000, we expect the Ranger to be powered by the same turbocharged 270 hp 2.3L I-4 engine with RWD as standard, and 4WD being optional. With an excellent towing capacity of 7,500 lbs, the Ranger is one of the best pick-up trucks to get. The 2022 Ford Ranger carries on from last year with minimal changes to its functions and features.

For the 2022 model line-up, the center of attraction is the Splash package that is available on the XLT and Lariat trims. For a premium of $1,495, the Splash package adds some nostalgia with a few orange visual enhancements on the outside and on the inside. A complete all-round package, the Ranger faces competition from some of the best mid-size trucks such as the Chevrolet Colorado, the Toyota Tacoma, and the Jeep Gladiator.

Pricing and Features
9.0/10

The 2022 Ford Ranger will be available in a total of three trims: XL, XLT, and Lariat with a choice between RWD and AWD. Estimated pricing for the trims will range between $25,000 to $36,800, and destination charges will be an extra $1,195. Offered features and functions will not see any changes. A new Splash package ($1,495) is available for the 2022 Ranger. Offered on the XLT and Lariat trims, it adds orange and black body graphics, 18-inch matte black wheels, orange grille trim, and orange contrasting stitching for the seats.

Standard equipment consists of air-conditioning, auto-dimming rearview mirror, steel wheels, a four-speaker sound system, and a Wi-Fi hotspot. There are trim-specific packages on offer that add more creature comforts on the inside and a few advanced safety features as well. The well-known Tremor package comes with AWD and adds underbody protection, recovery hooks, larger 32-inch tires, off-road-oriented Fox shocks, and 0.8-inches of raised ground clearance for a cost of $4,290.

Buying Advice

We recommend the 2022 Ford Ranger XLT trim with AWD as the one to go for. It has significantly better features than the XL trim, and has more practical optional packages as well. The XLT trim can also be equipped with the Tremor or the Splash package as well. Among other packages, the 302A is a must that adds dual-zone climate control, remote ignition, power-folding mirrors, and heated front seats all for a minimum cost of $35,000 without destination charges.

Engine and Performance
7.0/10

The 2022 Ford Ranger will continue with the same 2.3-liter turbocharged inline-4 cylinder gas engine as standard. This engine outputs 270 hp and a torque output of 310 lb-ft coupled to a 10-speed automatic transmission. The transmission provides smooth and quick shifts with a punchy performance which makes the Ranger a confident and quick truck. Torque is always available across the band, which helps with towing heavier loads efficiently.

This perfect engine and gearbox combination propels the Ranger from 0-60 mph in a time of 6.8 seconds. The Ranger comes with a Terrain Management System that offers four driving modes to provide optimum performance on various terrains. Rear-wheel-drive is standard on all trims, whereas four-wheel-drive is an optional extra for a premium of around $4,000.

In terms of steering and handling, the Ranger handles well, with minimal body roll but there's no shying away from its truck roots. The steering is light and not very responsive, whereas the independent suspension is bouncy and can make rides unsettling. There is pronounced nose-diving under hard braking as well.

The Ford Ranger can tow up to 7,500 lbs and carry a payload of 1,770 lbs. This is one of the most capacities among mid-size trucks. The maximum payload capacity, however, can go up to 1,860 lbs. A thorough glance at the above table shows that the Ranger is well-equipped against its rivals. The amazing engine-transmission combination, compact size, and high towing and hauling capacities result in making Ranger an ace of spade.

With AWD, this mileage drops down to 20 MPG city, 24 mpg highway, and 22 mpg combined. With the Tremor package, the economy sees a drop down to 19 MPG combined. The Ranger is the most efficient car among the lot, with its 23 MPG combined mileage. The Colorado and the Tacoma return the same combined mileage of 21 MPG. A combined mileage of 19 MPG makes the Gladiator the least efficient car in the lot. It however, gets the largest tank at 22 gallons. Between the Chevy and the Toyota, the Tacoma is more efficient in the city, whereas the Colorado is better on the highways.

Interior
9.0/10

The interiors of the 2022 Ford Ranger do not have the appeal that the rivals offer. It's simple, plain, and dull. Materials used are inconsistent- cheap plastics adorn the interior but there are other bits like stitched seats and different finish options that give it a better feel. Controls are well placed and well in reach of the driver. Overall standards are satisfying. The Ranger is rich in terms of features offered, with its steering mounted controls, automatic climate control, leather/fabric upholstery, and heated front seats.

As a 5-seater, the Ranger is spacious and comfortable. The front seats are best suited for long journeys, with excellent support and cushioning from the seats. In the rear, legroom is immense and there's good lateral support with decent side bolstering as well. The tall bedside limits rear visibility, which is otherwise quite good with the large windows all around. Wide opening doors allow for easy getting in and out of the truck, despite its taller height.

Front seats are adjustable for height, and that is the most adjustability on offer. Seating space is not the best on the Ranger, but it never feels tight. In the front, a long wheelbase gives the Colorado an edge over the others in terms of available legroom. The Ranger offers the next best legroom. At the rear, the Gladiator offers the most legroom and headroom. The Tacoma's rear headroom is the shortest of all.

The 2022 Ranger comes with the new Ford SYNC-4 infotainment system with a large infotainment display. The base trim is not very well-equipped, and standard features include a 4-speaker system, AM/FM stereo, Wi-Fi hotspot, and a single USB port. Higher trims are better equipped with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, an 8-inch touchscreen, and other features. Interior features on the Ranger include:

  • Power-adjustable and heated front seats
  • Leather upholstery
  • Leather-wrapped steering wheel
  • Keyless entry
  • 8-inch touchscreen
  • SiriusXM Satellite radio
  • Navigation system
  • 10-speaker Bang and Olufsen sound system

Exterior
8.0/10

The 2022 Ford Ranger might be a smaller F-150, but it lacks the road presence. The Ranger has a tall and muscular posture, complimented with smooth curves and creases and a proportional geometric shape. At the front, this truck gets slanted LED headlights, a hexagonal grille, and a tall front bumper. Along the side, rectangular doors and huge mirrors go well with the deep wheel arches and alloy wheels. At the rear, it's simple with a pair of vertical headlights and a huge 'RANGER' moniker.

Dimensionally, the Ranger weighs 4,232 lbs and has a wheelbase of 126.8 inches. It is 210.8 inches long, and has a bed length of 5 feet or 60 inches. These are quite compact dimensions against the competition, but the Ranger has managed space very well. The Splash package adds a black and orange hint to the exterior, and the Tremor package improves upon the Ranger's looks with a few off-road accessories such as side steps, underbody protection, larger 32-inch all-season tires, and recovery hooks.

The Tacoma is the lightest of the four, and there are noticeable differences between these trucks. The Colorado is at least 6 inches more in length and has a wheelbase that is no less than 3 inches longer than the other three trucks. The Tacoma is 1.1 inches wider than the Ranger, and the Gladiator is around 4 inches taller than the Ranger. In terms of ground clearance, the Gladiator has the most at 10 inches. Some exterior features on the Ranger are:

  • Steel/Alloy wheels
  • Manually locking tailgate
  • Power-folding mirrors
  • LED headlights
  • Automatic wipers
  • Underbody plate
  • Foglights
  • Body-colored door handles

Safety
7.0/10

The 2022 Ranger has not been crash-tested yet. However, the NHTSA rated the Ranger with an overall rating of 4-stars, and the IIHS rated it with 'Good' scores in most tests. We expect the same ratings to be carried forward on the 2022 Ford Ranger. The Ranger is based on the Ford T6 platform and uses a high-steel steel frame with frame-mounted bumpers. Safety features offered on the Ranger include:

  • Lane-keeping assists with lane departure warning system
  • Rearview camera
  • Tire Pressure Monitoring system
  • Adaptive Cruise control
  • Forward collision warning
  • Blind Spot Information System (BLIS) with Trailer Coverage
  • Pre-collision assist with automatic emergency braking

2022 Ford Ranger Crew Cab vs. 2021 Toyota Tacoma Double Cab

Both the trucks offer AWD and a optional off-road package. The Toyota Tacoma is a popular choice thanks to its excellent reliability, high resale value, and low maintenance. It also gets a V6 engine and manual transmission. The Ranger packs in fresh looks, better tech and a highly capable Tremor package. The Tacoma is slightly more expensive than the Ranger, but it offers a better value overall.

2022 Ford Ranger Crew Cab vs. 2021 Chevrolet Colorado Crew Cab

Both the Chevrolet Colorado and the Ranger offer a strong body-on-frame construction with a good choice of cab types. The Ranger has a better payload capacity, more modern features, better economy, and a capable off-road package. The Colorado has three engine options, higher towing capacity, better off-road capability, and a long list of available customization. Between these two, the Chevy is the better option overall with its powerful engine options and class leading towing capacity.

Final Verdict

With all the features it packs in, the 2022 Ford Ranger makes a bold statement in the mid-size pickup trucks category. A powerful engine, good interior space, top safety features are some of the hits of the Ranger. However, it has a few misses as well. The interior is still not up to par, and the ride quality is can use some more smoothness. It's a simple truck with affordable pricing but in this age, it's hard to not look at the misses. We might suggest taking a look at the Toyota Tacoma instead.
