Overall Rating

The 2022 Genesis GV70 has been recently made available to the media for an in-person look. This means that the 2022 Genesis GV70 is expected to hit the showrooms in a few months.

The 2022 Genesis GV70 has been recently made available to the media for an in-person look. This means that the 2022 Genesis GV70 is expected to hit the showrooms in a few months. In the meantime, you can pre-book the 2022 Genesis GV70 from Genesis’ official website. The 2022 Genesis GV70 is based on the Genesis G70 sedan and both share a lot in common. The 2022 Genesis GV70 will be getting two engine options a 300 hp turbo-four and a 375 hp twin-turbo V6 borrowed from the bigger Genesis GV80 SUV. The power and torque figures are similar to the Genesis GV80’s figures so we expect an under six seconds 0-60 mph timing for the 2022 Genesis GV70.

The 2022 Genesis GV70 even when powered by the turbo-four will be faster than rivals brands like Audi, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz compact SUVs. The interior of the 2022 Genesis GV70 has got the maximum attention and it is not only luxurious but also tastefully designed with lots of premium touches all-around. The dimensions of the 2022 Genesis GV70 are better than the rivals and that translates into better cabin space and cargo space. The 2022 Genesis GV70 prices will start from $41,000 for the base trim. That said, the 2022 Genesis GV70 will lock its horn with the likes of Audi Q5, BMW X3, and Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class.

The 2022 Genesis GV70 is available in two engine options both of which power the bigger and heavier Genesis GV80, so performance won’t be an issue in either of the powertrain choices. The 3.5T commands a hefty premium of $11,600 over the 2.5T. So, until and unless you are sure that you need a big twin-turbo in your GV70 we recommend going for the 2.5T. With the money saved you can get few optional goodies added like a panoramic sunroof, Nappa leather seats, and the 15-speaker Lexicon sound system.

2022 Genesis GV70 Buying Advice

The 2022 Genesis GV70 is available in two engine options both of which power the bigger and heavier Genesis GV80, so performance won’t be an issue in either of the powertrain choices. The 3.5T commands a hefty premium of $11,600 over the 2.5T. So, until and unless you are sure that you need a big twin-turbo in your GV70 we recommend going for the 2.5T. With the money saved you can get few optional goodies added like a panoramic sunroof, Nappa leather seats, and the 15-speaker Lexicon sound system.

Engine and Performance
8.0/10

The 2022 Genesis GV70 offers two engine choices. The standard one is a 2.5-liter turbocharged inline-4 that puts out 300 hp and 311 lb-ft of torque. The other one available is a 3.5-liter twin-turbocharged V6 that churns out 375 hp and 391 lb-ft of torque. Both the engines come mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission. For the US market, the 2022 Genesis GV70 will be AWD while globally it will be offered in RWD and AWD options.

Both the engine options are also available in the bigger Genesis GV80 that does 0-60 mph in 6.2 seconds and the quarter-mile comes at 13.9 seconds. Now since the 2022 Genesis GV70 gets the same engine with the same power but is lighter than the Genesis GV80 by around 700 pounds we expect the 2022 Genesis GV70 to do 0-60 mph under six seconds.

Coming to the rivals, all the SUVs in this comparison are powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-4 engine. The Audi Q5 puts out the highest 261 hp and 273 lb-ft of torque while the BMW X3 produces the least 248 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque. That said, the Mercedes-Benz GLC does 0-60 mph in 5.6 seconds which is the fastest for now as we don’t have the official 0-60 mph figures of the 2022 Genesis GV70. But we are sure that the more powerful 2022 Genesis GV70 will smash that record without breaking a sweat.

The Audi Q5 returns a gas mileage similar to that of BMW X3 but gets a bigger 18.5-gallon fuel tank compared to BMW X3’s 17.2-gallon fuel tank. So, the Audi Q5 returns the highest 462 miles of combined range from a tankful of gas.

Interior
8.5/10

The 2022 Genesis GV70 interior is well-crafted and luxurious, making use of fine material and high-quality leather for the seats. The dash is covered in soft-touch material to give it a single-piece look. The dash nicely contours over the driver’s display to reduce the glare on the 12-inch driver’s display. The dash was done in a two-tone color scheme in our display car but a single color tone dash is also available. The main attraction of the cabin is the 14.5-inch touchscreen mounted high up on the dash which is easy to read without taking your eyes off the road. The display is the best that we have experienced so far in the price range.

Moving to the section below the screen there is an oval-shaped console that houses the control for HVAC. The touchscreen is controlled via a rotary knob placed at the center console. The 2022 Genesis GV70 gets a dial-type Shift By Wire (SBW) gear selector. The oval console stretches to the other side of the driver and has few more buttons on that side. There are two steering wheel options for the 2022 Genesis GV70. The standard one is a two-spoke unit while the other one is a sporty-looking three-spoke steering wheel.

Coming to the seats, you get a nice and comfortable set at the front and a bench-type seat at the rear. The seats are finished in synthetic leather which does look premium and feel good to sit in. The front seats are heated and ventilated while the rear seats only get a heating function. The driver’s seat offers a 12-way power adjustment with active seat bolstering and memory function. The passenger seat is 8-way power-adjustable. The rear seats can be folded into 60/40-split to increase the cargo space.

The 2022 Genesis GV70 offers the best 41.3 inches of front legroom among all the rivals but the 37.2 inches of rear legroom and a sloping roofline make it tight at the rear for six-footers and above. What further accentuates this issue is that both the doors opening are small so ingress and egress require you to duck and slide in or slide out. That said, for medium-size adults, rear seats offer a good amount of legroom and headroom. The rear seats can also be reclined for added convenience and comfort.

Speaking about cargo space the 2022 Genesis GV70 offers 28.9 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seats and with the rear seats folded, you can increase that to 56.9 cubic feet. For the rivals, only the BMW X3 that has 28.7 cubic feet of cargo space comes close to the cargo capacity of the Genesis GV70. The Mercedes-Benz GLC offers 19.4 cubic feet of cargo space which is the least among all.

The main highlight of the cabin of the 2022 Genesis GV70 is its 14.5-inch touchscreen infotainment system. The system comes standard with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto but doesn’t offer wireless connectivity for the same. Higher trims come with the bonkers 15-speaker Lexicon sound system while the standard ones are expected to be a 12-speaker unit.

Highlights of the interior include:

  • Heated and ventilated front seats
  • Heated rear seats
  • Fingerprint touch ID
  • Wireless phone charging
  • Powered front seats
  • Synthetic leather upholstery
  • Dual-zone automatic climate control
  • Tri-zone automatic climate control (optional)
  • Nappa leather-trimmed seats (optional)
  • Ambient mood lighting (optional)

Exterior
7.5/10

The exterior looks and design of the 2022 Genesis GV70 are the most unconventional yet handsome and fresh looking in the entire segment. The 2022 Genesis GV70 is based on the Genesis G70 sedan and there are a lot of design cues similar between the two especially at the front. Speaking of the front, the GV70 gets a G-matrix grille with twin bar LED headlights at the sides. The long bonnet gets two sets of bold lines, the first pair starts at the Genesis logo and ends at the windshield. The other pair starts from the grille edge and continues through the rear profile to finally merge into the rear quarter panel.

At the side, you get flared wheel arches with 18-inch alloy wheels while 19- and 21-inch wheels are also available. What we liked most about the looks was the use of dark chrome and fiber inserts all around which uplifts the luxurious appeal of the GV70 without looking gawky. The rear portion of the side profile gets a floating glass between the C-pillar and D-pillar which completes the wagon-like look of the Genesis GV70. Moving to the rear you get twin bar LED taillights with dual-exhaust tip. The 3.5T Sports variant of the Genesis GV70 gets a blacked-out rear bumper with two circular exhaust tips at each end.

Safety
9.9/10

The 2022 Genesis GV70 hasn’t been crash-tested yet by either the NHTSA and IIHS. But since the 2022 Genesis GV70 is based on the Genesis G70 sedan we expect the Genesis GV70 to score the best possible ratings. As the 2021 Genesis G70 on which it is based got ‘Good’ in all six parameters of IIHS and was awarded the ‘Top Safety Pick+’ award. Still, if you have your doubts then let’s have a look at the standard safety features offered in the 2022 Genesis GV70. Competition
8.0/10

2022 Genesis GV70 2.5T Vs 2021 Audi Q5 Premium

The 2022 Genesis GV70 is cheaper than the Audi Q5 and puts out much more power than the Audi. Although the Audi Q5 offers better fuel efficiency while the Genesis GV70 has better interior and cargo space. The exterior dimensions of the Genesis GV70 are bigger than the Audi Q5 thus giving it a better road presence. Likewise, the looks of the Audi Q5 now feel nothing special or different but the Genesis GV70 offers a better and refreshing look which is not common in the segment.

2022 Genesis GV70 2.5T Vs 2021 BMW X3 xDrive30i

The BMW X3 is pricier than the Genesis GV70 and offers much lower performance than the GV70. But the BMW X3 has better gas mileage and almost similar interior and cargo space compared to the Genesis GV70. The cabin of both the cars are luxurious but you get more tech and features in the cheaper Genesis GV70. The exterior looks of both the SUVs are intimidating but the BMW X3 is taller than the Genesis GV70.

2022 Genesis GV70 2.5T Vs 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLC 300 4Matic

The Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class lacks in all departments compared to the Genesis GV70 be it the price, performance, mileage, interior, or cargo space. The Mercedes-Benz GLC except for the badge value has little to offer over and above the Genesis GV70. Overall the Genesis GV70 is a much better option than the Mercedes-Benz GLC in all respect.

Final Verdict

The 2022 Genesis GV70 packs in two powerful engines under its hood and has pricing that undercuts most of its competitors especially the German rivals. The interior and the tech offered in the Genesis GV70 can put to shame cars priced higher than it. The exterior design is also fresh for the market and looks great on the Genesis GV70. That said, the 2022 Genesis GV70 appears to be that luxury compact SUV that is worth the wait.
