Overall Rating
The 2022 GMC Acadia has two major changes, the SL trim and the base 2.5L engine are being dropped from the lineup. The new base trim is the SLE trim and the base engine is a 2.0L turbocharged inline-4 and comes with a new base towing capacity of 3,500 pounds. The interior features on both the available trims from the previous year will be carried forward as is. The GMC Acadia has already been released and should be available in dealerships late summer at an MSRP of $35,995.
Following a refreshed styling and minor exterior tweaks in its 2020 and 2021 models respectively, the 2022 GMC Acadia gets some significant changes again. The 2022 Acadia sees a restructuring of its trim levels, eliminating the previously base "SL" trim. GMC also plants a new 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-4 base engine in the 2022 Acadia which replaces the earlier 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine. The Acadia also gets a revised features list, new wheel designs as well as a new "Light Stone Metallic" optional color scheme.
The interior gets more standard features this year but the overall design materials remain the same as the previous model year. This means you would still find the hard plastics all around the cabin. The prices have climbed by $900 across the lineup, and the 2022 GMC Acadia is available for sale at a $35,995 price. It competes against the likes of Kia Telluride, Ford Explorer, Dodge Durango, and Toyota Highlander.Â
The base SLE trim of the 2022 GMC Acadia offers plenty of gizmos at an affordable price tag. Therefore opting for the base SLE trim with the AWD drivetrain offers the most value to buyers. It gets the GMC Pro safety suite, plenty of technology, a dual-pane sunroof, and even three-zone climate control, all as standard. That said, opting for the Driver Convenience Package would also make sense to add the powered seats and remote engine start.

"This year's Acadia offers fewer trims, but more active safety features and exterior design choices." - Motortrend
The 2022 GMC Acadia has not received any many changes this year, but excluding the SL trim means that there are more standard features on offer with the SLE trim. The MSRP has increased by $900 for both the SLE and SLT trims. The SLE trim is now the new base offering and comes with a starting price of $35,995. The SLT carries a price tag of $40,295 while the 2022 Acadia AT4 is available only as an AWD option at an MSRP of $42,595.
The base SLE trim can only be had with the 2L turbo-4 engine while the SLT can additionally be opted with the more powerful 3.5L 310 hp V6 for just $495. Though both the trims are available as FWD as standard, AWD can be added to the SLE and SLT for $2,300 and $2,000 extra respectively.
There are also options and accessories available for the buyers to choose from to get an Acadia specific to their needs. The $1,495 Elevation Edition gets 20-inch machined aluminum wheels with all-season tires and gloss-black roof rails, while the Driver Convenience Package adds power driver seat functionality with lumbar support and remote engine start for $1,795.

"The Acadia has enough power to get you around town in a timely fashion, but it never handles particularly well and it definitely isn't fun to drive." - Carbuzz
Under the hood of the 2022 GMC Acadia, you get two engine options, a 2L turbo-4 or a 3.6L V6.
depending on the trim, you will get one of two engine options. As the 2.5L liter engine has been dropped, the SLE trim now gets the same 2.0 turbocharged inline-4 as the SLT trim as its base engine offering. The 2.0L turbocharged inline-4 cylinder engine produces 228 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque. This engine has enough power for quick acceleration and overtakes on the highway, and it should suffice the needs of most buyers.
If you crave more power and grunt under the hood of your SUV, the 3.6L naturally aspirated V6 engine generates 310 hp and 271 lb-ft of torque. This engine is available only with the SLT trim along with the AT4 and Denali models. A 9-speed automatic transmission is mated with either of the two engines and the FWD drivetrain is standard, with AWD available optionally across the lineup.
With the 2.0L turbocharged engine, the minimum towing capacity is 1,500 lbs. Upgrade to the big brute 3.6L V6, and the performance improves with a 0-60 mph sprint in 6.5 seconds while the quarter-mile drops to 14.9 seconds with the top speed also being increased to 130 MPH. Furthermore, the towing capacity climbs to 3,300 lbs as standard and can be further increased to 4,000 lbs with the Trailering Package fitted.
The standard engine can do the 0-60 run in 7.7 seconds and has a top speed of 115 MPH.

The Ford Explorer has the smallest engine in this lineup, and yet stays ahead of the pack with the fastest in the 0-60 mph run. The Explorer also offers the best towing capacity here which is marginally greater than the Highlander and Telluride. The Toyota Highlander stands third on the podium with its power specs and acceleration time.
The GMC Acadia is priced on the higher end of the spectrum with rivals being offered as low as $2,000 below its price tag.
The 2022 GMC Acadia is rated to return a maximum of 29 MPG on the highways and 25 MPG combined. Opting for the AWD brings down the fuel economy ratings to 22/27/24 MPG for city/highway/combined as per the EPA.
The bigger 3.6L V6 engine is rated by the EPA for 19 MPG in the city, 26 MPG on the highways, and 21 MPG combined. The base trim gets a 19-gallon gas tank while higher trims are bumped to a 22-gallon capacity. Therefore, the combined range of 475 miles is increased to 528 miles for the SLT trim.

The turbo-4 engine under the hood of the Acadia is the most frugal of the lot while the Toyota Highlander with its V6 and the Ford Explorer with its powerful EcoBoost engine are next in line. The Kia Telluride has the lowest fuel efficiency but it features a larger fuel tank that brings its range on par with Ford and Toyota. The 2022 Acadia has the best range even with the smaller gas tank capacity.
"While the Acadia has comfortable seats and a smooth ride, it isn't as upscale or athletic as some competitors." - cars.usnews.com
The interior of the 2022 GMC Acadia remains unchanged from last year. And since there is no change in the length this year, the same kind of space is expected in all the rows. You get three rows of seating, with a lot of practical storage and cubby spaces throughout the cabin. That said, the interior has started to look dated and though there are some good quality materials, a lot of hard plastics also make their presence felt.Â
Power adjustable seats are available only with the SLT trim and SLE buyers will have to invest more to get the Driver Convenience Package to enjoy 8-way power seats with lumbar support. Heated seats and leather upholstery also make their way on the SLT trim and are not available with SLE even as an option.Â
The perforated leather-appointed seats on the SLT are available for the front two rows and that's the place to be in. The seats are comfortable enough for long rides and have decent space on offer as well. Getting into the third row requires you to squeeze in a bit and there is just not enough space for an adult to be seated.Â
To cater to practicality, you also get a 12.8 cu-ft cargo space which is just about enough to carry two medium suitcases and a few duffle bags. The sloping roofline at the rear eats up some of the luggage space and even with all seats folded you get a maximum of 79 cu-ft of cargo space.Â

Compared to the rest, the GMC Acadia isn't the most spacious of the lot. The Ford Explorer offers the most legroom in its front and third-row by compromising some space in the second row. Both the Highlander Telluride also offers more space than the Acadia.
The 2022 Acadia is also tight in terms of cargo space. The Kia Telluride offers the largest cargo area and doesn't compromise much in the passenger section as well, making it feel the most appropriately spaced in this comparison.Â
In terms of infotainment, the 2022 Acadia comes with an 8-inch touchscreen system with a 6-speaker sound system as standard.
Upgrade to the SLT trim and up, and you get Navigation and an 8-speaker Bose Surround Sound System as standard. All the trims come with Apple CarPlay, Amazon Alexa, and Android Auto along with other connectivity options like Bluetooth, 4G Wi-Fi hotspot, and SiriusXM satellite radio.
The system is pretty straightforward to understand and quite user-friendly and adaptive in everyday usability. There is an available option of a 6-inch heads-up display. Additionally, one can also get a rear-seat entertainment setup with two 8-inch screens and two Bluetooth headphones. Â
"The exterior design of GMC Acadia is conservative yet distinctive. It looks classy without being flashy, and the look can change depending on the choice of trim." - KBB
The 2022 Acadia stands tall and bold and with a powerful attitude confronting its prominent rivals in the market. There have been no changes made in this regard as compared to last year apart from the inclusion of the new Light Stone Metallic color.
A set of 18-inch wheels is standard across the lineup but the 2022 model year Acadia gets an option to choose between two sets of 20-inch wheels. A set of Sterling Silver-painted aluminum wheels or High Gloss-Black painted aluminum wheels are available for an additional sum of $2,295.
Rest of the specs remain the same with the traditional GMC block grille, C-shaped signature LED daytime running lights, and LED foglights. There are various accent packages also available for either a blacked-out appeal or a chrome-finished look. There is also a hands-free powered tailgate available for the SLT trim onwards, while the AT4 trim gets additional body cladding for that distinctive look. The 2022 Acadia is offered in Summit White color as standard along with 5 other premium colors that cost $495 or $645, depending on the color.

Dimensionally, the Ford Explorer is the biggest and heaviest of the lot followed by the Kia Telluride. That said, the Telluride is the lightest of them all. The long wheelbase of Ford and Kia helps it open up plenty of space inside its cabin.
The GMC Acadia offers a truck-like front fascia that looks the most aggressive on the road, while the Toyota Highlander has a soft and modern and appeal to its exterior style.
Being a carryover from last year, the 2022 GMC Acadia retains the safety standards that its predecessor set. The 20212Acadia procured a perfect 5-star safety rating from the NHTSA and an overall good rating from the IIHS for the 2021 model year.
To prove its mettle in the crash tests conducted, the 2022 GMC Acadia comes with a plethora of safety features as standard right from the base trim. With the GMC Pro Safety Plus suite now standard, the 2022 Acadia AT4 gets additional off-road-specific safety features like the Torque Control AWD. Some of the other notable safety features are:
While both these SUVs are priced very close to one another, the Highlander offers a more powerful engine under its hood as standard. This makes it quicker off the mark and also benefits in the towing capacity department. Both have similar MPG ratings and are similar in terms of external dimensions as well. The interior of the Highlander makes the biggest impact with superior materials quality, better space in the front two rows and a larger trunk. Thus making it the preferred choice here.
The Kia Telluride is far more affordable than the Acadia and has a more grunt under its hood as well. It looks bold and impressive and has a much higher towing capabilities. The cabin has a modern appeal to it with a lot more technology on offer than the Acadia. It is far more spacious as well with a huge cargo area on offer. Therefore, it beats the 2022 Acadia in almost all accounts except for the fuel economy ratings.
The EcoBoost engine powering the Explorer makes it a gem to drive. It is blistering quick off the line and has tremendous towing prowess to showcase. It has a more modern interior and the most usabel third row of seat in the business. There is plenty of space for luggage and the exterior design has a solid road presence as well. Add to that the fact that it is cheaper than the Acadia by $1,500, it makes for an obvious choice between the two.
The 2022 GMC Acadia has already been released for the 2022 model year and is available for sale across the country. The redesign and the probable arrival of the next generation are pegged for the 2023 MY. Backed with a feature-packed build and a lucrative price tag starting from $35,995 onwards, the 2022 Acadia will be available for sale now in just 2 trims, with the AT4 and the Denali model sold separately.
Though the competition is fierce, more cost-effective, and backed by a more powerful engine now from its base model, the 2022 GMC Acadia does just about enough to hold its own. The aggressive exterior is what attracts more buyers along with its composed and comfortable ride. But if you don't want to spend the big bucks for a new Acadia, you can always check out some great deals on the 2021 Acadia here at CarIndigo.
