About 2022 GMC Yukon

3.9

Overall Rating

The 2022 GMC Yukon SUV is the flagship of GMC and is now on sale with prices starting at $51,600. A total of 4 trims- SLE, SLT, AT4, and Denali are on offer in the lineup. The SUV will also get the 5.3-liter found in the 2021 model as standard in the SLE and SLT trims and will take on the likes of the Ford Expedition, Nissan Armada, Chevy Tahoe, and even the Toyota Sequoia.

Coming off fresh from a redesign from last year, the 2022 GMC Yukon is now on sale with prices starting at $51,600 for the base SLE trim with 2WD. Not many changes have been made by GMC for the 2022 Yukon apart from the addition of a 12.0-inch digital display as standard and an all-new interface for the infotainment system that GM developed in conjunction with tech giant Google. The Yukon will be offered with SLT and SLE trims as standard.

The 2022 Yukon is also available in the AT4 and Denali versions as well, with the AT4 getting the 6.2L V8 from the Denali model as an option for this year. With no mechanical changes, the 2022 GMC Yukon will continue to offer a good fuel economy. On the inside as well, the 2022 GMC Yukon doesn't get many changes, but the Denali model now gets a power-sliding center console as standard. The rivals for the 2022 GMC Yukon includes the likes of the Chevrolet Tahoe, the Ford Expedition, and the Nissan Armada.

The SLT makes the most sense in this scenario since it gets all the required features and also gets various option packages that add further to make the trim most suitable to the buyer. Of the available options, the SLT Luxury Package is the best due to all the features it adds to make the SUV comfortable.

Pricing and Features
7.5/10

"It’s blessed with excellent powertrains, copious interior room for people and their baggage, a long roster of standard safety and luxury." - The Car Connection

The GMC Yukon is available in four trims - SLE, SLT, AT4, and Denali - of which we’ve covered the latter two separately. The SLE and the SLT are pretty well-equipped trims on which the AT4 adds off-road friendly features while the Denali adds more comfort and poshness. The price of the SLE and the SLT starts at $51,600 and $58,400 respectively for the RWD drivetrain.

In terms of feature enhancements and changes for the 2022 model year, the Denali trim gets a power-sliding center console as standard. The AT4 model, on the other hand, now can now be equipped with a dual exhaust system. A new infotainment system that uses an interface that GM co-developed with Google can be now found in the 2022 Yukon, as is a standard digital 12.0-inch instrument cluster.

Engine and Performance
7.5/10

"Redesigned from the ground up for 2021, the new Yukon borrows mechanicals from the Chevy Tahoe and Suburban, but goes its own way with unique looks and a few novel features" - Car and Driver

The 2022 GMC Yukon remains mechanically unchanged from last year and which is why coming in as the standard powertrain is a familiar 5.3-liter turbocharged V8 generating 355 bhp and 383 lb-ft of torque. A bigger 6.2-liter turbocharged V8 producing 420 bhp and 460 lb-ft mated to the reliable 10-speed shiftable automatic transmission can be found on the AT4 and the Denali models.

The ginormous V8 engines do produce a significant amount of horsepower on paper but fail to deliver the level of performance expected from it. It gets 2 drivetrain options in the Rear Wheel Drive (RWD) and 4 Wheel Drive (4WD) in addition to the latest offroading technologies like hill roll and hill start assist, locking center differentials, and more.

The stats are definitely not in favor of the GMC Yukon in the performance department, where competitors like the smaller Nissan Armada and the segment best-selling Ford expedition take the crown away from the Yukon. The Nissan and the Ford in spite of their smaller powertrains have managed to beat the Yukon and that has definitely posed some serious questions in front of GMC.

Fuel Economy
7.0/10

"Official EPA ratings for the diesel are still forthcoming, but GMC expects it to be the thriftiest option among the three available engines." - Carsdirect

Though gas mileage is definitely not the 1st priority in the segment where the Yukon’s competing, still GMC has employed a few clever technologies in an attempt to improve the Yukon’ mileage by virtue of the cylinder deactivation method where 2-4 cylinders are deactivated at low speeds around the town. However, the real-world MPG figure turned out to be 15 MPG in the city, 20 MPG on the highway. These figures are not exemplary by any means but you do get a decent range with the massive fuel tank on offer.

The GMC Yukon is definitely not the best prospect when it comes to gas mileage when compared to its direct rivals like the Chevrolet Tahoe and Ford Expedition. The competitors get a consistent 1-2 MPG more than the Yukon in both city and Highway, even if these figures don't seem to be significantly higher but make a real difference when taken for long road trips.

Interior
7.5/10

" The new Yukon's interior is a significant step up from the fourth-gen model, but that's not to say there isn't room for improvement" - Motor Trend

The 2022 Yukon's interiors come loaded with features, across all the variants. The SLE model is available with a front bench seat, which ups its capacity to nine passengers. The mid-level SLT trim adds leather touches to the dashboard and gear knob, front bucket seats, and powered-folding second and third rows on offer.

It comes with an optional 2nd-row captain’s chair. The overall fit and finish and design aesthetics are decent enough. However, it's the Nissan that feels the most sturdy and well-built, compared to the GMC. However, this new Google-GM infotainment setup is one of the easiest units to get used to in the industry and has a fluid interface and bright readouts for those super-sunny days.

The interior materials and build quality don't live up to GMC's luxury aspirations or the high price on the window sticker, and the third row is tight for all but children. When compared to its rival the Chevrolet Tahoe, the interior feels slightly inferior but definitely fairs better than the Ford Expedition and the Nissan Armada.

In terms of the features on the inside, GMC has bundled quite a lot of features on the 2022 Yukon, some of which have been listed below:

  • Leather-wrapped seats, steering wheel, and dashboard along with sporty red accent stitching.
  • First and second-row perforated Ventilated and powered front seats.
  • Dual rear 12.6” rear entertainment system.
  • Tri-zone automatic climate control
  • 9-speaker premium BOSE audio system.
  • Full-length panoramic sunroof
  • Heated leather-wrapped steering wheel.
  • Wireless induction charging available with up to 8 USB 2.1 charging ports

Exterior
9.0/10

"Coming to an upper-middle-class neighborhood near you: The GMC Yukon is richer and bigger, with details and a price tag to match" - The Car Connection

The GMC Yukon stands as the quintessentially strong American build, tough rugged full-size SUV. There is no holding back from the fact that the Yukon surely manages to impress one and all with impressive muscular design language aid with some generous usage of bling chrome elements to spice up things.

The tall boy aggressive stunts usually go really well with the American buyers and GMC is certainly hoping it is the same case with the brand new Yukon. The GMC Yukon definitely stands head and shoulders above its competition as shown in the data above and the sporty extended full LED front and rear lights of the vehicle definitely add to the menacing look.

Safety
8.0/10

"The Yukon offers up to nine cameras for better outward vision and towing assistance and the Yukon can be fitted with adaptive cruise control and active lane control, as well as a rear camera mirror." - Thecarconnetion

The Yukon stands as a strong custodian when it comes to the safety of its passengers. With the integration of the latest active and passive safety features, the Yukon promises to be a safe ride. The GMC Yukon hasn’t yet been tested by the Insurance Institute For Highway Safety (IIHS) owing to obvious reasons but we feel that the GMC would ace the same, courtesy of its massive suite of features.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Exam (NHTSA) has rated the Yukon an impressive 5 out of 5 stars and hence stands a testament to the build quality offered by General Motors in the Yukon. The expected set of safety features that could come in the 2022 Yukon could include the following set:

  • Blind-spot monitoring and warning system
  • Active Lane Keep Assist with Lane Departure Warning
  • Available forward-collision warning and low-speed automated emergency braking
  • Rear Park Assist with 9 cameras to give a bird’s eye projection of the vehicle
  • Intelligent auto high-intensity adjusting beams
  • Ultrasonic motion sensors
  • Anti Lock Braking system with 4 wheel channeling
  • Electronic brake distribution (EBD)
  • Traction control
  • Electronic Stability Control (ESC)
  • Staged frontal impact airbags

Competition
8.0/10

2022 GMC Yukon vs. 2022 Chevrolet Tahoe

The siblings from GM's lineup, the GMC Yukon and the Chevrolet Tahoe have a lot of things in common. Starting with the similar powertrain options to performance to interiors and even dimensions, there's not much differentiating these GM twins. However, the GMC Yukon is presented as a luxury offering by GM, while the Tahoe is a relatively "Budget-Friendly" option with a slightly less exuberant styling.

2022 GMC Yukon vs. 2021 Ford Expedition

The Expedition is Ford's answer to General Motors' full-size SUV lineup. The Ford Expedition is a pretty good SUV that can haul you and all your pals around in the utmost comfort. Moreover, the Ford Expedition is being carried forward to the model year 2021 without any changes, whereas the Yukon comes adorning an all-new bodysuit. So while the Yukon will garner you more attention, the Expedition will help you save some bucks in the long term.

2022 GMC Yukon vs. 2022 Nissan Armada

The Nissan Armada has become an irresistible proposition ever since it got its facelift. The 2022 Nissan Armada now comes with best-in-class power figures that match its 0-60 time of 5.9 seconds, the Armada surely gets the job done. The Armada feels a lot better built on the inside as well and will fetch a far better resale value than the GMC. However, like the Armada, the Yukon too got a recent facelift and it now gets an all-new look inside-out, a ton of features and amenities, and an amazing road presence. It sure may not be as well built as the Nissan but it sure got enough to turn heads around.

Final Verdict

“YES” in case you are looking to buy an intimidating full-size SUV with tremendous road presence and hardcore offroad feel, the 2022 GMC Yukon might just be the right vehicle for you. But, having said that, there are more practical SUVs with better rear-end sitting and lesser-priced options in the form of the Ford Expedition and Chevrolet Tahoe. However, considering the loaded set of features and the amazing road presence on offer, the GMC Yukon is still one of those vehicles that you can't go wrong with.
