Overall Rating
The 2022 Hyundai Santa Cruz is Hyundai’s first-ever pick-up truck and it starts at an MSRP of $23,990. Based on the Hyundai Tucson, the Santa Cruz gets a unibody architecture, appealing presence, and car-like cabin. Its extensive suite of features with agile handling and comfort ride make it stand out in a crowded space.
The much anticipated 2022 Hyundai Santa Cruz is finally available now and it starts at an MSRP of $23,990, excluding the $1,185 destination charge. What Hyundai calls a "Sports Adventure Vehicle" is the Korean major's first-ever pick-up truck that tries to stand out with its unibody platform and youthful styling. It is more like a crossover with a truck-bed for added practicality.
What's essentially based on a stretched-out Hyundai Tucson, the 2022 Hyundai Santa Cruz's main highlight is its car-like unibody structure. The formula is similar to the Honda Pilot-based Honda Ridgeline. However, since it's dimensionally smaller, it is more of a rival to the similarly packed Ford Maverick. With its distinct character and packaging, the Santa Cruz seems promising but how it fares in the crowded lifestyle pickup segment is something we'll have to look out for.
We would suggest picking up the 2022 Hyundai Santa Cruz "SEL" trim and the available AWD. At an MSRP of $ $28,690, the SEL packs in some helpful amenities like heated front seats, power driver's seat, remote start, and some other key safety features. With the AWD drivetrain, the Santa Cruz SEL gains that additional composure and all-weather proofing.

"Overall, we like how the 2022 Hyundai Santa Cruz combines the comfort of a small SUV with most of the utility of a pickup".- Edmunds
The 2022 Hyundai Santa Cruz offers buyers four trims to choose from SE, SEL, SEL Premium, and Limited. For those who are aware of the trims offered by Hyundai, these are commonly known trims and are available on many models like the Tucson, Santa Fe, Elantra, Sonata, and others. The SE and SEL models get a 2.5 Liter inline-4 engine and come with FWD as standard equipment. There is the option of an AWD drivetrain that costs $1,500 more. "Given the Santa Cruz’s Tucson underpinnings, the ride quality is exactly what you’d expect. It’s comfortable and compliant. There is no truck-like jingle-jangle underneath you. On the road, you don’t even remember there’s a truck bed back there".- Kelley Blue Book
The 2022 Hyundai Santa Cruz comes equipped with a 2.5-liter inline-4 cylinder engine with the SE and SEL models. The engine which also powers the Tucson produces 191 hp @ 6000 rpm and 181 lb-ft @ 4000 rpm of torque. An 8-speed automatic transmission channels all that power either to the front wheels or all four wheels. The higher SEL Premium and Limited trims though get a bigger 2.5-liter turbocharged motor borrowed from the Santa Fe that cranks out 281 hp and 311 lb-ft of torque.
Borrowed from the larger Santa Fe, the turbocharged engine comes mated to a DCT transmission sending power to all four wheels as standard. Also, with the base engine, a 2022 Hyundai Santa Cruz can tow up to 3,500 lbs. The more powerful turbocharged motor enhances the towing capacity to up to 5,000 lbs. Thankfully, with either of the two engines, the Santa Cruz doesn't seem hunting for more power at all, given its proportions and character.
The standard 191 hp block with the base models feels adequate and happy with most of the tasks you throw at it. Although the base engine is quite clean and linear with its power delivery, it is more suited for humble everyday duties. Enthusiasts are more likely to opt for the turbocharged motor which feels more robust and confident, even at quick highway passing. Disappointingly though, 0-60 MPH figures are not out yet but the turbocharged Santa Cruz should be as fast and quick as the Honda Ridgeline.

Out on the move, the 2022 Santa Cruz is not your conventional pickup. The unibody frame provides unmatched grip and composure for a truck and the nicely-calibrated suspension soaks up road undulations really well. The steering is very talkative but has good feedback and connectedness into it. Thanks to its lower and smaller body, the Santa Cruz feels agile and light on its feet with quick maneuverability. Though you will find some tail movement, the Santa Cruz negotiates turns surprisingly either.
The 2022 Hyundai Santa Cruz has received its EPA estimated fuel economy ratings. and it's fairly efficient for its class. When equipped with the base engine and front-wheel drive, the 2022 Santa Cruz offers 21 mpg in the city, 26 mpg on the highway, and a 23 mpg combined fuel economy. However, these numbers are not as good as Tucson, with which it shares a lot of mechanical parts. With AWD the numbers actually improve by 1 mpg on the highway and offer the same mpg numbers in the city and combined.

When equipped with the turbocharged 2.5L engine the fuel economy is 19 mpg in the city, 27 mpg on the highway, and a combined 22 mpg. Hyundai is yet to announce the fuel capacity but we expect it to be a bigger fuel tank than the Santa Fe (18.8-gallon), mostly due to its utilitarian nature. Among its competition though, while the Ridgeline with its larger V6 engine stands behind the Hyundai, the Ford Maverick shines bright with its 37 mpg combined economy. "Inside, the Santa Cruz has one of the nicest cabins among mid-size pickups".- Car and Driver
Get inside the 2022 Hyundai Santa Cruz, and you will forget the fact that it's actually a pickup truck. It seems like Hyundai pulled the interior of the Tucson to double back as their pickup truck's interior as well. The only difference between the two is the transmission selector where the Santa Cruz has a lever while the Tucson has buttons. Similar to its crossover sibling, the 2022 Santa Cruz welcomes buyers with a spacious and upscale cabin and one which seems much more loaded and inviting compared to other trucks.
The Santa Cruz can seat 5 adults in its cabin which feels solidly built and has a good mix and texture of materials all-around. As standard, you get manual front seats but climbing the trial ladder can greet with you a power driver's seat with power lumbar support, alongside heating and ventilation for the front row. The Limited model also unlocks supple leather upholstery. The cabin feels roomy enough and has ample legroom and headroom at both the rows for a pickup truck in this segment.

"Don't let this truck's diminutive size fool you. The new Hyundai Santa Cruz has plenty of utility".- CNET
Prior to its launch, Hyundai had revealed that the 2022 Santa Cruz will be one of the smallest pickup trucks in its segment. When released, it was pretty small compared to many other trucks out there. However, its compact dimensions and overall stance do make it look bigger than it seems. The compact dimensions will also mean that the 2022 Santa Cruz should be easier to maneuver around. The simplest way to describe its design - it looks like the 2022 Hyundai Tucson with a pickup bed after the rear seats.
Up at the front, you get the Hyundai Parametric Design-inspired fascia that is also featured on the 2022 Hyundai Tucson. With LED Headlamps and DRLs, it also gets LED Taillamps that have "Designed in California" embossed on them. Completing the look is a set of 18-inch wheels (20-inch on limited). Furthermore, there are 6 colors on offer - Ice White, Phantom Black, Hampton Grey, Sage Gray, Blue Stone, and Mojave Sand.

The Hyundai Santa Cruz is also shorter in height by 4-inches when compared to the competition. With its differences in dimensions, we expect the 2022 Santa Cruz is also on the lighter side weighing in almost similar to the Maverick.
Exterior Features:
Since the 2022 Hyundai Santa Cruz has just broken cover, it has not undergone crash testing from the IIHS and NHTSA. Hence, it does not have a safety rating yet. However, it shares its platform with the Hyundai Tucson and the Hyundai Santa Fe, both of which have an overall safety rating of 5-stars out of a possible 5-stars, from the NHTSA. Both, Tucson and Santa Fe have also been awarded the Top Safety Pick from the IIHS.
In order to make good on its promise of safety and reliability, the 2022 Hyundai Santa Cruz packs the SmartSense Safety and Convenience suite as standard. Ranging from active safety aids to secondary features, Hyundai has gone all out to make sure that the 2022 Santa Cruz goes down as the perfect example of a safe debutant pickup truck. Some of the notable safety features that the 2022 Hyundai Santa Cruz comes with are:
Safety Features:
Hyundai Santa Cruz vs Ford Maverick
Almost similar in size to the Santa Cruz, the Ford Maverick's core USP is its hybrid powertrain and segment-leading fuel economy and driving range. The Ford also has a lower MSRP than the Hyundai here. however, the Hyundai Santa Cruz is a more value proposition with its premium looks and cabin, more features, better passenger room, and a larger towing capacity than the Maverick. The Santa Cruz is also more comfortable and agile among the duo here.
Hyundai Santa Cruz vs Honda Ridgeline
The Honda Ridgeline is more expensive than the Santa Cruz but is also bigger, more powerful, and more practical among the duo. Courtesy to the Ridgeline's larger bed. Owing to its comparatively lighter and smaller footprint, the Santa Cruz is more efficient and fun to drive than the Ridgeline. The former is also more feature-rich and feels more premium and inviting than the Ridgeline.
For those out in the market looking for a balance between the ride and comfort of a crossover alongside the practicality of a lifestyle pickup truck, the 2022 Hyundai Santa Cruz is a great pick. It's stylish and more appealing than any other truck, on the inside as well as outside, and also comes loaded with heaps of available features. Most importantly, its nimble handling and supple ride make it feel more like a crossover. While it may seem to have a smaller bed, but one which scores very high on practicality and usability.
